Retro looks from Light and Shadow’s first test shoot
by javabeans
Why, hello there, ’70s. You are making quite a comeback this season, aren’t you?
First we had Jang Geun-seok and Yoon-ah’s Love Rain, which is set partly in the ’70s and partly in the present. Now Light and Shadow, an upcoming MBC drama, joins them in the retro department; here are stills featuring the drama’s four main characters, all dolled up and stylin’ in their old-school fashions (although I think technically these may be closer to the ’60s).
The two main leads are Ahn Jae-wook (I Love You) and Nam Sang-mi (Life Is Beautiful), pictured together above, who will be joined by second leads Lee Pil-mo (Believe in Love) and Sohn Dam-bi (Dream). The series follows the life and career of Ahn Jae-wook’s character — a showbiz entertainer — from 1960 through the present day. Sort of like epic biopic, except it’s all fictional.
I can’t say that I’m terribly captivated by this drama’s premise, but I do like most of the cast. And I did enjoy the earnestness of Rock Rock Rock, which covered much of the same time periods, though with a stronger emphasis on the ’80s. The thing about that, though, was that knowing it was a true biopic made me a lot more willing to overlook “plot,” per se, since I knew we were picking out the highlights of a musician’s real life. When it’s all invented, I think the story carries much, much more of the burden.
It’ll be hard to judge until we actually see the drama, which premieres mid-November, taking up the Monday-Tuesday slot from sageuk drama Kye Baek.

Seriously, this remind me so much of Fashion 70s.
They all look good though.
I love Nam Sang-mi.
Off topic...I'm so happy to finally see a City Hunter header for DB. Still miss the show so much.

Aah, Fashion 70's... my head just hurts thinking about that drama. I thought the only good thing about it was how good Chun Jung Myung's butt looked in those pants. AHAHA

Programmer ahjumma,
And you say: It's not a choice, but a way of life. Get over it. I'm going to be first commenter many times to come, honey. Tee-hee.
I'm not sure about this premise either. Everytime I think of these span the decades things, its usually about a downward spiral into the pits of doom. But hopefully it will have some pleasant surprises for us.
And the City hUnter header. I haven't seen it up top! I went to look in the 'my rotating headers' section in order to see it!

Yeah, don't like the span-several-decades thing either.
And can I say I hate the clothes? Especially that pink-black stripe disaster?

AJW is back in full force!!!!!!!!! I love Nam sang mi but they should have done a better job with her hair. Should get rid of the bangs.
I like Son Dambi the singer but not as an actress. I rather she goes back to singing, she's better at it. I found her so bland.

omg! My friends and I were at Nami Island two weeks ago when these photos were taken. We spotted a filming crew setting up and a truck with the MBC logo. My friend asked one of the camera crew and she was told they were filming an MBC Drama. We only stayed to watch Son Dambi and Nam Sangmi have their photos taken and left when they started filming the two girls walking. If I knew Ahn Jae-wook and Lee Pil-mo would be there I would've insisted on staying a bit longer.

I think it's pretty exciting to stumble upon random filmings in Korea :) The crew arrived at around 3 or 4pm and 20mins later they started the photo shoot. If we didn't have other plans back in Seoul and I was aware of the male actors, I would've stayed. To be honest, when we were there and were told abt Son Dambi I couldn't remember the male leads of the drama! I just remembered she was cast in a new drama >.<

I can't but help think of Giant, which I tried re-watching the entire series the last few days. PHEW. I gave up after ep 30 and only skipped scenes for the Miju/Minwoo storyline and then skipped again to the last ep.
I might need a break from another long drama that spans over a few decades and watch this show once it ends.

Someone needs to take Fashion History 101 again. The skirt on the second female lead didn't appear in either the 60s or the 70s. It didn't really come into being (in terms of popular appeal) until the 90s. I can understand getting the decade off by one decade (hence, Nam Sang Mi in Twiggiesque baby doll mod dress), but mixing such distant decades? Meh.

I totally agree. The second female lead can belong in this century or in the 50s with her hair. Her outfit looks more like the 90s. The lead female's outfit definitely is the 60s, not the 70s. But it's not a mod outfit that I would wear. What happened to the bell bottoms?

woah i can't wait for AJW's comeback drama, missing him so much since last drama I Love You! He's one of those ageless guys in their late 30s in Kor entertainment -- i'll surely support you Jaewook ssi! I'm one of your biggest fans! I agree his hairstyle here is far more better than last drama Sarang hae or I Love You! He's got the cutest smile! Oh I like Phil Mo also since Sons of sol pharmacy! :)

If it weren't for Secret Investigation Record, Giant would have been the best korean drama from last year.
I have high hopes for this one. Can't wait :D

I'm starting to think the '70s in S. Korea is the equivlant of the '60s in the US as that's the current time love affair there.
