Princess’s Man ends on a ratings high
by javabeans
No surprise with this news: KBS’s sageuk melodrama Princess’s Man has been standing solidly in first place in the ratings for most of its 24-episode run, and it bowed out on October 6 with a series high, a 24.9% viewership rating.
[MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD! You are warned!] The drama has been promoted as a Romeo & Juliet romance set in sageuk times, but despite that tragic association, things ended rather happily for the lovers (Moon Chae-won and Park Shi-hoo), as they had a daughter together and lived on with “simple but happy lives.” Hmm, when you tell me a drama’s a tragic romance, I’m generally expecting that romance to end sadly — but I suppose there was plenty of strife along the the way to the Happily Ever After to fulfill the tragedy quotient. [/SPOILERS]
The strength of Princess kept SBS’s big buzz drama Tree With Deep Roots in single digits: Its first two episodes drew 9.5% and 9.8%, respectively. It’s a disappointing start, but I wouldn’t worry; I’ll bet those numbers jump next week with Princess over. That means the two new Wednesday-Thursday dramas will virtually be starting off on the same ground, with Man of Honor kicking off next week.
MBC’s underwatched Can’t Lose stayed in third place with a 6.4%, and will likely stay there while Man of Honor and Tree With Deep Roots duke it out for the ratings crown. Too bad, since it’s just about the only light rom-com on these days and is a pretty cute watch. (There are some lighter offerings on the weekends, in the dailies, and on Fridays with The Musical, but as far as prime-time miniseries go it’s a rom-com dry spell right now, with sageuks galore.) But them’s the breaks — the ratings world is one tough nut to crack.

Such a beautiful, poignant and romantic drama . Sizzling chemistry between PSH and MCW and glad that it had a happy ending. Really want to recommend this drama to those who avoid watching it earlier for fear of tragic ending.
Once you start, you can't stop and you can't help but be drawn to the main characters. You will laugh, cry and finally laugh again when you watch the drama!
Any chance of DB recapping this drama later maybe as a series review? Look forward to read your views on this drama.

Yeah, that was a MAJOR spoiler. That's why I avoided coming here, Soompi or even Viki until after I watched the last 4 episodes that I marathoned last night. I'm not completely against spoilers. But towards the ending of a drama I'm too deep into, like TPM, I don't even watch the previews.
TPM is officially my new favorite drama of all times. Don't get fooled by the happy ending, it is a tragic story. You will cry your eyes out, and then some more. But is sooo GOOD!
I've been praying and praying for a happy ending, so thank you writernim!

Agreed, in order to get to the "happy ending" the characters lost a lot and struggled. Seung-Yoo had to struggle between the love for his family, doing the right thing and for his love for Se-Ryeong. Se-Ryeong had to struggle between choosing her love for her father and Seung-Yoo. I mean everyone (not just the main characters, but also Jeong, Princess Gyeong He, the Queen Mother) all struggled with making really tough choices under terrible circumstances. The ending is not the main thing here, it's about the journey everyone had to make to get there. In my opinion, everyone lost something. Su Yang did get the throne but at a huge price. He loved his children and I am sure as a parent losing his children is a worse punishment than death.

Now that I sorta know how it will end, it's kinda silly for a 'tragic romance' to end that way. Only in K-dramas would that work? It was well acted, well written, I guess. till the end. LOL I have yet to watch the last episode, but knowing the spoiler now, I'm actually a wee bit disappointed. Nevertheless,it was worth the many moments of crying throughout! I will miss PSH and his long hair!

I'd say it's still a tragic romance considering everything they've lost along the way. Their former lives were completely destroyed, they can never go back to that innocence again. The last episode is still very sad. Just because it ends happily, with them living out the rest of their lives together, doesn't make the journey to get there any less tragic. I thought that last scene was beautifully poignant, and bittersweet when you imagine the innocence in how it all began.

Great job with the spoiler, JB. I love your site, but am definitely not enjoying the fact that the brunt of the climactic final ten minutes of this drama were essentially spoiled for those of us who thought that by "minor" you meant minor, not major plot defining spoiler.
Also, even though I did take note of the spoiler notice, it's rather hard not to see what it actually is when the spoiler sentence is in black text and immediately follows the label on both the summary page and the paragraph itself. For those of us who tend to read quickly, this was definitely almost impossible to miss.
Please at least try to respect that fact that not all of us are Korean native speakers and must wait the two days for subs. Much appreciated.

I think KBS billed it as Romeo & Juliet because of the feuding families similarity. Other than that, not much likeness if you ask me.
It was a marketing strategy
Thanks to the person who posted that R&J excerpt, it brought me back to school days and the memories of having to memorise important lines for literature tests

I'm the suckerish kind who thinks as long as the male and female lead DONT die, it's all good. Simplistic, I know. But I also appreciate the heartache and hardships the all characters endured to get there
The journey was a painful/tragic one. So the reunion and " happy ever after " compensated it somewhat

The ending was such a letdown. It had so much going for it; I was so hooked throughout, prepared for the worst fate for the protagonists, which would've been just the right way to wrap up the whole tragic story. Then that ending. Lame. Ugh.

I guess I can understand where some people are coming from wanting the really tragic ending. You guys are brave though. For a moment there, when it looked like that's where the story was heading, I already felt like I was going to have a heartattack. If things had really ended (more) tragically I can't imagine how much of a messed I'd be afterwards.
You should read the history behind the Princess' Man. The ending has been praised because the writers combined both official and unofficial history from that period.

Agreed with Luna. Amazed at the writer's ability to deliver an ending that did not change history but accommodate most of viewers' wish of letting the protagonists lived happily!

I love this drama. The story, the cast, the acting, all are just toooo perfect. But I am bit disappointed with the ending. It's like anti-climax. It doesn't match with the all movie's story from the beginning. Why, suddenly the King became so nice and they can escape. I was hoping that the Little King will get his title back through rebellion lead by Kim Seung Yoo .
But yeah, I am not the scriptwriter hahahahaha..And who the hell am I to judge...
Anyway, over all, this is the best korean drama I've ever watched.

"The garden is lost, but I have found him and am content."
--This refers to Adam and Eve, when they were banished from the garden of Eden.
don't know if it makes sense to anyone else. I read this in a book and it reminded me of the Princess' Man ending when he said he lost his chance to take revenge but he found her so he's happy, or something like that.
This comment may be too random. result of my insomnia. anyways just wanted to share that :)

I finally was able to finish this series after long moments of homework and completing applications. This drama at first seemed like it was going to disappoint me at first but as I continue to stick through crying through the sad scences, laughing at the funny scenes, and smiling at the adorable and happy scenes. I throughly enjoyed this show, not disappointed for one moment and really happy that i decided to give it a chance. This is one show I did not follow the summary or previews and winged it due to my obsession with historical dramas. I loved Park Shi Hoo and Moon Chae Won chemistry and their acting carried this drama to another level I have not seen in another drama. I really hope they get a chance to collaborate in another drama with the hands of the great directors, producers, and writers who designed such a beautiful drama.

The little things that were awesome too:
Shin Myun's red feather hat!!! And when he tossed it to the ground, he was all - it's on, like Donkey Kong.
Kim Seung Yu's rebellion hair. It was like he was an anime character, lol.
The beautiful clothes and scenery.
The cutest little girl ever playing Park Shi Hoo's niece.
And here's the bloodthirsty part of me - the times when some character who really needed to die actually got killed. When Kim Seung Yu was in his assassin phase, I really wanted him to go after the strategy man in Su Yang's circle. It makes me mad that he lived, especially since he killed Shin Myun in the end.

I couldn't stop crying when Se Ryeong got hit by Myun's arrow, and Seong Yu's eyes stared at her in disbelief. The way she reached out her hand to touch his face was really unbeareable.
This drama was daebak. The actors could easily pictured the love, hatred, and sadness pecfectly. I guess, if anyone watch it and not tear, then something wrong with their heart.
