Flower Boy Ramyun Shop posters
by javabeans
Now those are five words that seem randomly thrown together. Flower. Boy. Ramyun. Shop. Posters. What next, a drama about Pink Ice Horse Train Monsters?
Silliness aside, this drama looks adorable. Bubblegum-poppy, cotton-candy, pink-hearts-and-ponies cute. I know I know, don’t judge a book a cover lest ye be judged, or something like that, but I can’t help really, really wanting Flower Boy Ramyun Shop to be a winner. And not just because I’m thinking three years is a long time to see Jung Il-woo shine as a lead again.
The drama premieres on October 31 on tvN. Just in time to share in the sweetness with all your Halloween candy. Assuming it lasts that long.

This looks SO SUPER CUTE. (You have to say the bolded letters in the accent of the white girls of Miami...a combination between the valley girl accent and...the Miami accent. Okay, let's just stick with the valley girl accent.)
After all these heavy dramas, it'll be nice for some fluff - especially some well-written, prettily directed, nice sound track fluff. Fluff that doesn't make my brain atrophy. (Wait...am I describing Hong Sisters' writing...oops...)

She looks prettier but almost borderline-cookie-cutter pretty. Definitely a far cry from her Temptation of Wolf days.

it's just my personal opinion, but i think she looks cuter and prettier when i saw her in accidental couple and everybody cha cha/jolly widows. now she looks, like u said, cookie cutter pretty. too standard korean entertainment pretty. i prefer looking at the previous her. she seems unique and bubbly, and i like her.

Hmmm...it looks like a battle between 2 'Woos' - Jung Il WOO and Lee Ki WOO...
both good-looking in their own unique way...
how to root for either????
I have never noticed Lee Ki Woo before and now that I have, I am more than ever looking forward to watching this drama...Jung Il Woo being the FIRST reason I wanted to watch it...hehehe... ;)
Hmmm,,,,next to TWO PRETTY BOYS, Lee Chung Ah looks...I don't know how to say it...overshadowed?
Not to say that she is NOT pretty, because she is, in her own unique way, but I suppose having 2 UTTERLY GORGEOUS guys vying for your attention, the girl should look...I don't know...MORE gorgeous and also glamorous? Someone like Son Ye Jin or Kim Tae Hee...
Well...I am going to wait and see how she will fare next to the 2 boys acting-wise...as we can't help but accept the casting...

@Raine ;)
Personally I like her - looks-wise and acting-wise - because I've seen her in various dramas before. And I am ALL for the less gorgeous/glamorous gals getting the good-looking guys, absolutely! ;)
However, IN THIS DRAMA, IMO it would be a lot easier for the main actress if she is on par (looks-wise) with, or be MORE gorgeous than, the male leads, because she would then have traction, or pull factor, for the viewers to FEEL that the guys' falling for her would be MORE believable?
For instance, in 'Protect the Boss', I simply could not BELIEVE that the female lead (whose name I cannot even remember, that is how unconcerned I am about her character) could REALLY be such an attraction to the 2 male leads simply because the actress IMO is simply too plain...just my humble opinion though...
IMO, in the dramaworld, EYE CANDY is no joking matter...it could make or break a drama...

O god, I agree. That lead actress in Protect the Boss was SO PLAIN. I couldn't stand it. I didn't like the male lead either. I think he's dam ugly. The second leads though, both were very very good looking.

@VV ;)
Hahaha...I can't agree with you more about the male lead (whose name I cannot remember either...hehehe) not being as smoulderingly-hot-looking as the second male lead, Jae Joong of JYJ (see...I can REMEMBER his name because his looks alone prompted me to find out his name and REMEMBER IT...hehehe)...
But as I have not been following the drama for the reasons that are only obvious, I can't say anything about the acting of any of the characters...
I believe the casting for 'Protect the Boss' could have been intentional - choose relatively PLAIN male and female leads, with gorgeous second male and female leads and hope the ACTING and STORYLINE could somehow convince us viewers into vouching for the plain Joes and Janes of this world to have their happily-ever-after...
OR...could it be that the powers-that-be over a casting-central for this drama were woefully off-colour or simply nonchalant about who they cast as the main and secondary actors, as long as they GOT the actors to agree to be in the drama?
Call me superficial or even biased, but when I turn on the TV to watch a drama/movie, I would much prefer to be ENTHRALLED by the eye candy AND great acting such that the time I spent watching the drama/movie would have felt like time well-spent because I am ENTERTAINED and my senses stimulated accordingly...
If I want to watch the plain Joes and Janes of this world, then I just do the opposite - switch OFF the TV and just watch MOST of the people around me...hehehe...

October 18, 2011 at 9:23 PM
Kay and VV- I understand where you are coming from in terms of dramaworld. You're right. Beauty is a huuuuge draw. The show would've probably benefited from beauty in terms of initial ratings.
For me, I don't really care unless the ugliness is distracting. But I don't think I've seen any actors like that. Have you?
VV - does your name have anything to do with the FF9 character? Or is that me just dorking out?

@Raine ;)
Hmmm...as far as I can recall, there have a few occasions when I was too distracted by the plainness (looks-wise) of certain actors/actresses such that I could not continue watching the drama/movie, no matter how great the storyline was or how good their acting was...but as I would rather not criticise anyone for what God has given them looks-wise, then I would not mention any names here...and so my answer to your question is most definitely a YES...
I can't help it, I guess...as I mentioned in my reply to VV above, I would really prefer to feast my eyes on gorgeous-looking people who can act rather than plain-looking ones who can act...there is just no competition...

VV, I can't help but agree with you about the premise that seems to be too light, simplistic and juvenile for my liking, the gorgeous eye-candy notwithstanding... ;)
BUT after almost 4 years of following Korean dramas and movies, I have found that almost every single drama that I have watched that MAY appear to me in the beginning to have a concept or premise that is rather juvenile or even silly/hair-brained, have turned out to be much more than I expected...and some dramas have even made me fall in love with them such that I find them to be some of the BEST dramas I have EVER watched... ;)
A good example is MY GIRLFRIEND IS A GUMIHO (MGIAG). I have never been a fan of fantasy-like or even myth-based stories/dramas/movies and thus was rather reluctant to watch MGIAG. But after reading Girlfriday's and Javabeans' recaps of the drama and then I started watching the drama itself (and re-watched it for like a MILLION times), I have virtually become a die-hard fan of the drama, and agree with Girlfriday that MGIAG could very well be the BEST drama of ALL TIME for me.
I have to hand it to the Korean writers/PDs of the memorable dramas/movies. The outstanding ones can really write and produce great dramas/movies, and I honestly believe South Korea has some of the world's FINEST drama/movie writers/PDs...and the fact that so many of the South Korean dramas/movies and now ever more, South Korean singers/songwriters/record producers/songs/boy bands/girl groups are so popular the world over, it is testament to how much TALENT South Korea has to offer in the entertainment industry...
And so, if I may make a suggestion...do watch the first few episodes of this drama so that you can see for yourself if it is worth your while to keep watching right till the end... ;)

I'm excited to see this drama. It looks good and light and since I'm watching Autumn in my Heart right now, I'd like to have some good [non-cancer-related] romantic comedy. Just sayin'.
As for the people who are talking about the plain jane and joe thing...I don't get it. I think they're all really cute! I am actually digging the second guy more than Jung Il Woo, which is secondary lead syndrome waaaaiiiting to happen. And the main girl is a cutie! I also found her adorable in Temptation of Wolves; but she's matured now and you can see it.
I also thought the leads in Protect the Boss were cute and actually found that actress to be really pretty;I liked her eyes and her little smirk. The lead too, I was totally crushing. I guess it's just opinion. Why couldn't you guys believe that they fell for her? She DID have a personality...or does that not matter, ever?
Also, is Kim Tae Hee the standard now? Man...I really don't see it. Her acting, to me, is meh and while she is lovely she isn't... SNOW WHITE (fairest of them all) or something. I dunno, I always felt like (some, not all) korean dramas did a good job of showing a relationship with people who fell in love after finding out more about a person and then finding them more and more attractive.
Just seems a little shallow to me when you guys say she needs to be on par with the males. I think she definitely is.

Like I said VERY CLEARLY, it is just my OPINION that LOOKS-WISE Lee Chung-ah is PRETTY TOO and I have NEVER said that Lee Chung-ah is a plain Jane...
but I wouldn't say she is gorgeous...
AND I did say I am going to wait and see how she will fare ACTING-WISE because what I care about is whether the actors/actresses CAN ACT...
As for the female lead in Protect the Boss, I stand by my opinion that she does not attract me and I believe that we have the right to our own opinion about what is attractive or not to us...
And I NEVER said that Kim Tae Hee is THE yardstick for beauty and acting-chops. I just happen to THINK of her because she is TO ME one of the few NATURALLY gorgeous actresses (Son Ye Jin being another one) among so many UNNATURAL beauties in the Korean entertainment industry.
It is interesting that you omitted mentioning Son Ye Jin because TO ME she has the whole package - beauty and true acting talent. Which is why I mentioned HER first, not Kim Tae Hee.
Perhaps you should try re-reading others' comments before easily labelling us as 'shallow' based only on such brief comments. There is a saying : It takes one to know one. If you label us as shallow, perhaps it is because you are too?

Yep, I totally agree with you! I love that looks are never the initial or primary reason the characters fall in love. It's much more endearing to watch when it's not "love at first sight" (which is a pretty shallow concept btw)

I'm tentatively excited, but I can't help but feel that a show who's entire premise is literally based on pretty men, straight up, may be doomed to fail. Oh, it might look pretty, but be unburdened by that cumbersome thing called emotional substance.
Now, some of us, might not care, but I like a little bit of weight in my pretty.

I never said YOU were shallow, just that the comment seemed to be so. I also pointed out that it was just opinion ("I guess it's just opinion"). In no way was I trying to bring your opinion or YOU down so you don't have to come at me in such a combative manner. But, since I've clearly struck a nerve I apologize for possibly misinterpreting your comments.
However, I never called you out on finding Protect the Boss' female lead unattractive (or never meant to) I asked why couldn't you believe that the two male leads fell for her? Because, I found it believable that they would, she seemed great.
I also only mentioned Kim Tae Hee in the way I did because I've been reading about her a LOT. The question I posed there was more a general question out of straight curiosity. IS she the standard cuz she's all people seem to mention nowadays...? I read about her on another website in which I reacted the same way. I have no problem with Son Ye Jin, so why mention her?
As, I said, I never called you shallow, just expressing my opinion that things said were shallow. I thought there was a difference. And I don't think myself a shallow person, but if you'd like to think so, you may.

When you label people's actions as such and such, you are also labelling the PERSON as such and such, even without specifically saying it...and you said that I was the one being combative? Are you really so clueless or were you born yesterday?
I suggest you refrain from commenting in such a manner in the future in order to avoid causing people to misunderstand you, alright?

People say mean things, sometimes. Does that make them a mean person? To me, no. You said something I felt was shallow, but does that mean I think you're shallow? No. That's just me.
And yes, I felt you were being combative. Just the same way that you feel I'm trying to label you when that's really not at all what I was doing. If you weren't being combative, fine, perfectly cool, but, maybe you should take your own advice and refrain from commenting in such a manner that will cause people to misunderstand you as well.
All in all, I think we just both had misunderstandings about each other, so I'd like to call a truce and stop here since back and forths do nothing for anyone.

Personally I have always believed that actions are a reflection of the person and so yes, I do believe that when people say and do mean things, it is because they are mean on the inside as well...I am saying this from a professional perspective because I deal with scumbags and criminals on a daily basis and my professional skills look into a person's psychological impulses...and mean actions are 99.9% from mean internal workings of a person...
BUT that is NOT to say that people can't change...
I don't expect you to accept my opinion, but I am just stating it anyway...
I did not use a word such as 'shallow' in my comment to talk about someone else/their actions and so HOW in the world exactly did my comment make you misunderstand me? If you think that you were NOT combative when you used such a harsh word, then to use your own words, fine, cool.
But at least we agree on one thing - I loathe this back and forth because it really does not lead to anything good because you don't know me and I don't know you and so you should not be so QUICK to judge people by saying we do shallow things by just a few words of comments.
