Busy Jang Hyuk already looking at next drama role
by javabeans
Yeesh, talk about busy: Jang Hyuk‘s new drama just started airing last week — SBS’s anticipated sageuk Tree With Deep Roots — and already rumors are swirling about him being cast in another drama project. Does this man intend to sleep anytime soon?
The new project is a KBS drama titled Gaksital (meaning Bride Mask), and Jang would play the lead role. Producers had courted Jang early on and some reports say that he plans to join the production, but soon after those initial reports came out, Jang Hyuk’s management came out to counter them, saying he’s is merely considering the project, and that it’s not a done deal. You know the familiar song and dance.
The plot: Hero Lee Kang-to appears to be outwardly dim, but he’s actually active in the independence movement against the Japanese imperialist regime. Gaksital is yet another adaptation of a famous manhwa, written by Heo Young-man in 1974; he’s the manhwa-ka who also gave us Gourmet / Le Grand Chef, Tazza, and I Love You, which all had drama adaptations (the first two were preceded by movies as well).
With the casting announcement have come some complaints that Jang Hyuk is playing too many similar roles, having made quite an impression as a hard-bodied “beast man” of a slave hunter in Chuno, followed by a warrior with revenge on his mind in Tree with Deep Roots. Yeah, but he’s also played a financial dude in Midas, a high-rolling gambler in Tazza, and a doctor in Thank You. Ah, selective memories. How you like to argue things…selectively.
The drama will be written by Yoo Hyun-mi, who was behind legal thriller Scales of Providence and the Desperate Housewives-esque MBC miniseries Home Sweet Home (aka Our Happy Home). It will be directed by PD Yoon Sung-shik, who did the awesome Story of a Man. Ooh, my interest just shot up about 200% — Story of a Man was well-written and -acted, definitely, but it was just as well-directed. Moody, stylish, and fun. Okay, now I don’t even care who’s in it — I just want to SEE it!
Gaksital is aiming for a broadcast next summer on KBS.

Just watch the film "Windstruck" which also stars JJH.
Albeit - the 1st half is a romcom; the 2nd half is melo.
Back in the day, JH was a lot "softer"; he didn't get all cut 'til later on.

it'd definitely been quite some time since he's been in a rom-com. He was hilarious in Windstruck before it got all melo - like asthma-inducing funny! Even though, he didn't play a very funny role in the rom-com, Successful Story of a Bright Girl, his combination of childishness, arrogance, and angst won me over. I didn't even realize he was the funnyman from Windstruck until a few years after I watched the drama (I had watched Windstruck first and then, Successful Story) Man, i wish Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk would do another drama together. They had such chemistry!

The manhwa's cover reminds me of V for Vendetta. I wonder if this manhwa inspired V for Vendetta haha.. because iirc the British comic was first published in the 80s.
Ah, and I love beastly Jang Hyuk!

Nah, Alan Moore began formulating ideas for V since the 1970s, although they were rejected for publishing, until V became what it is and was published later.

Sorry, I was half-asleep when I replied this morning. The image for V (the mask and all), was based on the Guy Fawkes mask.

This role sounds perfect for him. He can totally pull off the silly dope who's secretly deadly and sharp and out for the blood of the unrighteous. I can't wait!

There aren't many interesting roles out there. This one sound great. Therefore smart of him to agree to it early. He will have a few months break after Tree with Deep Roots, which by the way is getting interesting.

idk...it seems like he's been stereotyped to play the same roles?! i would want to see him doing something else.
is it just me or does he have the same facial expression everytime?

or maybe it's because the only roles he plays that are memorable are the "beastly" ones?
I haven't seen him in many things but I kind of want to see him more in sageuk-like things more than say.. Midas-like dramas..

Funny, I want to see him in roles more like the doctor in Thank You. He showed potential for romcom there, and I think he'd be awesome in a romcom.

I can never look at Jang Hyuk the same way again after coming across his rapping videos *shudders*
But, how can people possibly say that he's played the same character? I think he plays his character with the same "flavor" though, and that's probably what's gotten people confused.
I'd like to see him in this new project. It's awesome how he's able to balance everything and make it seem effortless...

Story of a Man was a drama I watched that I enjoyed so much and would watch over and over again...
If this drama would be the same as that then I would definitely watch this!

Is Korea just being blinded because there are a lot of actors/actresses that act in similar roles. NOT JUST JANG HYUK if at all. ex) Choi Ji Woo (recently did something differently but she was a melo queen)

I think it would be nice to see him in a different genre. Or maybe that's just becoming his thing nowadays - become an actor known for playing gruff and rough roles in sageuks.
Even in Midas, his character wasn't a softie and the drama couldn't end without giving Jang Hyuk a (few) fighting scene.
Actually, wait, all his dramas are like that. Yup, that's just his thing.

N..n..next summer? :(
Have been excited about this drama for yonks, particularly its Japanese colonial era backdrop, even if narrated manhwa-style.
Plus Jang Hyuk! Great news!

I believe this is because of his nomination in 2011 International Emmy awards for his Chuno which I hope he wins that is why he gets dramas so fast lately...
