A Gathering of Writers to Say Thank You
by samsooki
Introduction
Unbeknownst to Javabeans or Girlfriday, many of the magical creatures in k-dramaland gathered together in a secluded glen within the kingdom of Dramabeans, long after the fey mistresses of the kingdom had gone to bed. They had known for some time that Dramabeans was nearing its 5,000th post (!!), and they racked their brains to come up with a suitable way to say thank you to celebrate the occasion.
For certain, were it not for Javabeans and Girlfriday, many of these creatures would be hanging out on tough street corners, or getting into dramas that no self-respecting elf or gnome should watch. How to thank the lifegivers of Dramabeans for providing so much entertainment, knowledge, heart, community and love? With that in mind, may I present the well-wishes and appreciation from the new and the old: a panoply of heartfelt congratulations for Post no. 5,000!

My Beautiful Love Story With Dramabeans – by gummimochi
My story began back in 2007 when I was watching Coffee Prince. I was searching the internet to hunt down the Coffee Prince soundtrack and ‘lo and behold – I found it: a hidden cave of wonders . Without intending to stay, I started to read the drama recaps and instantly became hooked! Here was a place where someone would give her frank two cents, sharing in my obsession with Korean entertainment in a smart, witty, and hilarious manner. Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s opinions became the gold standard of my K-drama future: which drama I would watch next and the ones I would recommend to friends. I break into a wide smile and my heart races whenever a new post goes up.
Dramabeans is so much more than a simple recap & entertainment site to me – it inspired me to start writing about what I love. It’s been only a few months so far, but I am so honored to be a part of a team of such talented writers. Congratulations Dramabeans on reaching 5,000 posts and counting!
An Excuse to Fawn Over Dramabeans – by kaedejun
I stumbled upon the site way back when it was under a different URL (javabeans.wordpress.com) and had to be ported over to dramabeans.com. I found the site right when I was at the peak of my obsession. (Have I peaked already? Am I still peaking?) But I wasn’t hooked to this site… until the recaps for Coffee Prince.
After the fanaticism of You’re Beautiful, I begged, pleaded, wailed on scuffed knees (ok, I emailed – but that’s not dramatic) to write the recaps for the drama IRIS. Wow Javabeans must have been crazy to entrust me with that. Sometimes I still wonder what she was thinking to even let me continue writing on her site!
So to the reasons why I love Dramabeans: it provides a 24/7 forum for interesting discussion on actors and dramas both on and off the set, inspiring venomous hatred and passionate ardor from fans around the world to fuel the long debates. It’s a mover-and-a-shaker; and without a doubt, Javabeans and Girlfriday are profoundly influential in the drama-watching world.
Every day, Javabeans and Girlfriday churn out well-written content one after another with frankness, insight, and well-founded opinions that you are free to agree or disagree with – but you can’t deny it’s made you curious about dramas or issues you never knew about before. The most important reason why I love Dramabeans? It’s because it wouldn’t be ‘dramabeans’ without Javabeans and Girlfriday. I toast to you gals a hefty cup of makgulli! One shot!
You’ve Only Just Begun – by sassychef
You know those “Ah-ha!” moments you have once in awhile? Well, discovering Dramabeans was one of those moments for me. My impatient nature (which I’m trying to work on, by the way) couldn’t wait for the next episode of Secret Garden, so I searched and searched online to see if anyone could feed my addiction on what to be expected. That’s when I came upon this little goldmine, and thus began my love affair with Dramabeans.
Not only was I able to find a place where I can find cache of goodies to put in my queue for further drama pleasure, but the posts were written in a sharp, witty and at times snarky ways that I loved! (I mean, come on! Girlfriday naming Ha Ji-won (playing Hyun Bin’s role) Joo-wanda. Joo-wanda!! LOL! How could I not come back for more??) Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s love of drama and writing has led to creating a dynamic site that so many of us has come to love and cherish. Having had the honor and pleasure to become a part of this incredible team has been a fantastic journey so far, and can’t wait to be a part of the next 5,000 posts. Congratulations Dramabeans, and we love you!! xoxo
Congratulations To Dramabeans! – by Thunderbolt
Wow, 5,000? I still remember the first Dramabeans post like it was yesterday. (That one resonated with me because I’ve always been keenly interested in any discussion on fansubs. Incidentally, I love Javabeans for the many times she has stood up for fansubbers.) And in three short months the blog will celebrate its 5th anniversary!
I came to Dramabeans via the Dal-Ja’s Spring recaps that Javabeans first posted on Soompi. The recaps were so witty and well written I was floored. Over the years, I have grown to love many things about the site. The breadth and depth of the writing. The humor. The goodies that you share (all those songs!) and the surprises that you spring (girlfriday! podcasts! Santa!).
I love that the posts can be serious but also silly, and that there’s no such thing as too much squee-ing. I love the occasional catfights, too. (Bora must die! Why I like Jang Nara!) You taught me that not everything is newsworthy, but that which is worth writing about should be written with heart and commitment. You make me proud to be a kdrama addict. Happy 5,000 posts, Javabeans and Girlfriday!
Onward Ho! – by Dahee Fanel
If my goldfish memory serves me correctly, I first encountered Javabeans on the Dal-Ja’s Spring thread over at Soompi in 2007. She was smart and witty and apparently a coffee addict, so of course I liked her and her insightful contributions to the thread right away. Before long, she was posting recaps of the show in the thread. I read them even though I don’t, and didn’t, need summaries of a show to understand what was going on, thanks to my (sometimes) useful fluency in Korean. I read them and loved them. And then when I found out that she had a blog, I went there and read every single post. That was the beginning.
Dramabeans has gone through a lot over the years. As a cheering bystander, I’ve watched it wax and grow from a little blog that housed JB’s drama addictions, to the K-drama powerhouse it is today. There was a time when there weren’t many (or any, rather) English-language blogs on Korean dramas, just like there was a time when we had to rent tapes from Korean video rental stores to watch the dramas that we love, and had no one to discuss them with online. (Oh the loneliness of those days!) The times have changed, and now all us K-drama fans can gather and debate, growl and squee to our hearts’ contents. Dramabeans has become one of the most precious of these gathering places.
What I love about Dramabeans is its passion. The passion for Korean dramas, movies, actors/actresses, variety shows, and Korean culture in general. That passion, that love and commitment, seeps through every single word in every single blog post, and it has since the very beginning. This is how dramas should be watched. This is how they should be written about. With love, respect, humour, and intelligence. Dramabeans, through the magic fingers of Javabeans and Girlfriday, has done this for 5,000 posts. Here’s to 5 gazillion more. Congratulations!!
Two Truths – by samsooki
I’ll let you in on two truths to k-dramaland. The first seems axiomatic but really isn’t: whether one is a prince or a pauper, on the inside we are all the same. This is the basis of the magic that keeps us so enthralled: that all of us are equal, only differentiated by the extent of our pluckiness! Yet stepping back, this truth helps only a little in understanding the universe. For true exploration, a trustworthy guide is a must, as k-dramaland is a very big place. And dramabeans has been that wonderful guide, an orphic counselor that weaves analysis and deconstruction with passion and wit. And more! With its open commentary style, dramabeans has also developed a tight-knit community whose warmth and tolerance for newbies has seen its numbers multiply by a magnitude – and isn’t it true that samsooki himself was forged in the crucible of an open thread?
The other truth is that we tend to live entire lifetimes through each drama series, gaining cherished memories of our favorite characters along the way. As each series ends and others begin, even now, how many lifetimes has the dramabeans community all shared together, and how many memories have become so cherished? All thanks to Javabeans and Girlfriday, I can’t imagine a better place to be, lifetime after lifetime, learning and sharing, and laughing and crying with everyone here.
*******
And with those parting thoughts, the magical creatures bade each other a good night. With a nod and a cheery wave, each creature sent a heart-felt thanks toward Castle Dramabeans and then disappeared back into the mists of k-dramaland – to rest, work, sleep or play. It would not do at all to dawdle; after all, there are always more things to do in k-dramaland.

Javabeans, Girlfriday, Samsooki, and all the other writers, thank you for the recaps. Without the recaps, the k-drama experience would never be complete. Sometimes it's more fun reading the recap than watching the dramashow :D

5000 posts! That is...astounding. And fantastic! I mean 5 years of dedication? There are marriages and jobs and friendships that don't last that long. But, as I'm sure many people have said, including you, JB, when you're doing what you love it just kinda creeps up on you. WE'RE SO HAPPY FOR THE CREEP FACTOR! (In a good way of course.)
JB, GF, you and this site have become such a mainstay of so many people's lives. You haven't just changed the way we watch TV, although you totally have, you've changed the way we interact with each other and to some extent the world. Maybe we're all a little crazier for it. I hope we're all a little better---or at least in better control of our crazy ;) . Whatever it is, JB and GF you guys are fantastic. Dramabeans is fantastic. The Dramabeans commenter family is fantastic. And we thank you.

I'm a fairly recent reader of your site. But, now, this is one of my important stops in my morning of "newsgathering". First Facebook to check up on my peeps, then Dramabeans to see what's going on in the world of Kdrama, THEN CNN to see if the world blew up while I was marathoning City Hall (or whatever).
I love your humor, your insights into Korean culture that help us non-Koreans understand it all a bit better, and the recaps so that we don't always have to wait for the subtitles, lol. I use old recaps when I marathon an old show, and your lists of favorites are very helpful in choosing new old shows to watch.
I also enjoy the community that has grown up around your blog, people are so nice and fun to "chat" with and provide me with someone to share the addiction that no one else in my life (at the moment) really "gets".
I raise my glass of Martinelli's (sorry, I don't drink) and salute you. Cheers and congrats and here's to many more years of drama addiction assistance. :0)

JB & GF- Girls, I have no idea how it happened but I became totally addicted to this site. More than 3 years ago I wrote a personal email to JB thanking her for a wonderful site. I knew I enjoyed it then, but I couldn't imagine that being on the other side of the globe, having no connection to Korea, not even having TV at home (for ideological reasons)- opening dramabeans site became one of the 3 first things I do as I wake up in the morning. Thank you for your insight, witty comments, great writing and all the things that make this site so unique.

Hello!!! This is my first ever Dramabeans post!! (Which is crazy considering that I have Dramabeans open all day on my computer the way everyone else in the office has facebook open!!!)
I am new (about 5 months, Dream High you changed my life!!) to the very exciting world of K-Drama and wanted to say a massive Thank You to Javabeans and Girlfriday and everyone else who spends so much time writing these freakin awesome recaps and posts!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!
Just to illustrate my point I will tell you about a totally uncool even that happened to me recently:
So, I am watching the amazingly exciting City Hunter on DVD (my connection is too slow at home so I have to buy DVDs off the net) and I get to the second last episode where Lee Min Ho is holding a gun in the Prosecuters face, and he opens his mouth and he says "Kim Strains!....Kim Strains is using my plants!"
I AM NOT KIDDING!!!
So my subtitles went absolutely mental(it took me twenty more minutes to figure out that Kim strains was what we were calling the prosecuter now) and after much prolonged screaming and horror I (slowly) pulled up the City Hunter Dramabeans recap and started watching the last two epsiodes, pausing it every two seconds to go find out what the hell everyone was actually saying.....DRAMABEANS YOU SAVED MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you guys!!! You are the best!!!!!!!
From,
a happy Australian K-Drama Addict.

And we know you make it all possible because you love what you do and you do what you love.
So, may DB continue to inspire us with new, fresh and in-depth ways of watching kdrama for the next 5,000 or 5,000,000 posts.

I've never commented on this site, but I have read it diligently for almost two years now, which is saying a lot because this is the only blog I follow. I love Dramabeans! Not only because it is fun and interesting but it also saved me from watching shows that weren't worth my time by introducing me to shows that were. So after silently enjoying this site for so many months and posts, I guess now is a good time to say thank you. Thank you very much for all the hard work and for all the fun times!

Wow Congrats on the website and its humongous growth!! Been following Dramabeans since your review of Coffee Prince. Your reviews made me crazy about that drama and even more so because of the backend stories and explanations that us non-Koreans probably won't understand about the culture.
Love reading everyone's thoughts about Kdramas that's oh totally one of my greatest addictions since watching Asian dramas. Awesome awesome job and I know there will be more recaps, more laughs, visitor bickers and info filling up my time . Thanks.

I was lucky enough to find you in late 2009 when my drama addiction first started. It didn't occur to me straight away, but I realise one of the main reasons why I keep hitting this site is... I feel part of a community. My sister and I dissect dramas and nearly always find we are also quoting 'Javabeans' and 'girlfriday' thoughts. Dramabeans (the recaps, the news, the podcasts) has become an intrinsic part in our drama consumption. *coughs*…I have to confess that since I started to video edit dramas, I have been using your recaps to help me find clips for video editing! One of these days I have to dedicate a video to you girls. :)

WOW! Why am I getting all sentimental over this post!? Congratulations on your 5,000th post and your upcoming 5th anniversary!
I've been watching K-dramas since 2003 (back when KBS still had a local channel in Chicago), but to tell you the truth I didn't become addicted until I stumbled upon the Coffee Prince recaps on here.
I just want to thank everyone for doing such a great job and working so hard on the site. I know it must be a difficult task, but there hasn't been one moment where I haven't been entertained, inspired, or educated by the posts here on dramabeans. Thank you for making this site what it is today, a growing community where people can talk about and share their love for Korean pop-culture. You have my sincerest gratitude and admiration. In this huge amalgamation of thanks, let me add my own. To be able to indulge in my tv crack and read intelligent commentary/analysis/babble/fangirling has been my delight for the past year since I first discovered this lovely blog. Not only do I enjoy reading all the posts written by JB and GF, but I love how you bring in guest bloggers, showcase music, have OT and generally share your addiction so that no K-Drama AA equivalent would ever be possible. You can't cure this kind of addiction. And I don't want you to.
Another reason I'm grateful for this site is this: I've never given more than a surface level analysis to any television show or movie I've ever watched. It's never interested me before. I could see chemistry between actors, but I didn't look farther. TV and movies were to take my mind off life, not to analyze and understand. However, when I read the in depth character analysis, PD commentary, music compatibility, camera work, and everything else that DB explores, I started watching K-dramas (and American, European, etc films and shows) with a more discerning eye and I've learned to enjoy being a couch potato all over again. Its not work, contrary to what I thought, but pleasure. I know you guys run yourself ragged writing and posting, but you wouldn't do it if you didn't love it. We appreciate it. I appreciate it.
Third reason I love this site. I started a blog just recently. Nothing spectacular. But as I am a full-time musician, I've neglected my writing for about 10 years. I haven't written anything outside of e-mails and text messages. But a couple weeks ago, I sat down and started to blather. I pick mundane topics that give me freedom to drivel. It's been glorious and I thank the high quality writing on this site that inspired me to find my dusty journals and jump back into the game, even if its only one blog post every week.
So thank you DB, JB, GF. You have made this girl very happy. You've taught me a lot about k-drama, Korean language, and Korean culture; you've brought me back into writing and using my brain. How lovely it is that you use your intelligence to pick apart a pop culture phenomenon. I love it and so does every other avid commenter, lurker and k-drama/k-pop addict who has visited this site.
Thank you.
Lisa

When I think of all of the trouble I have gotten into in the past three years, over an addiction aided and abetted right here in post after delectable post...well, you guys have got a lot to answer for! The dishes left unwashed in the sink! The dust bunnies that grew up and had multiple children! The questions and conversations ignored, because my head was buried in the computer screen! The pain, the anguish, of a family neglected!
(and here's to 5,000 more, right?) ;-)
