A Gathering of Writers to Say Thank You

Introduction

Unbeknownst to Javabeans or Girlfriday, many of the magical creatures in k-dramaland gathered together in a secluded glen within the kingdom of Dramabeans, long after the fey mistresses of the kingdom had gone to bed. They had known for some time that Dramabeans was nearing its 5,000th post (!!), and they racked their brains to come up with a suitable way to say thank you to celebrate the occasion.

For certain, were it not for Javabeans and Girlfriday, many of these creatures would be hanging out on tough street corners, or getting into dramas that no self-respecting elf or gnome should watch. How to thank the lifegivers of Dramabeans for providing so much entertainment, knowledge, heart, community and love? With that in mind, may I present the well-wishes and appreciation from the new and the old: a panoply of heartfelt congratulations for Post no. 5,000!

My Beautiful Love Story With Dramabeans – by gummimochi

My story began back in 2007 when I was watching Coffee Prince. I was searching the internet to hunt down the Coffee Prince soundtrack and ‘lo and behold – I found it: a hidden cave of wonders . Without intending to stay, I started to read the drama recaps and instantly became hooked! Here was a place where someone would give her frank two cents, sharing in my obsession with Korean entertainment in a smart, witty, and hilarious manner. Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s opinions became the gold standard of my K-drama future: which drama I would watch next and the ones I would recommend to friends. I break into a wide smile and my heart races whenever a new post goes up.

Dramabeans is so much more than a simple recap & entertainment site to me – it inspired me to start writing about what I love. It’s been only a few months so far, but I am so honored to be a part of a team of such talented writers. Congratulations Dramabeans on reaching 5,000 posts and counting!

An Excuse to Fawn Over Dramabeans – by kaedejun

I stumbled upon the site way back when it was under a different URL (javabeans.wordpress.com) and had to be ported over to dramabeans.com. I found the site right when I was at the peak of my obsession. (Have I peaked already? Am I still peaking?) But I wasn’t hooked to this site… until the recaps for Coffee Prince.

After the fanaticism of You’re Beautiful, I begged, pleaded, wailed on scuffed knees (ok, I emailed – but that’s not dramatic) to write the recaps for the drama IRIS. Wow Javabeans must have been crazy to entrust me with that. Sometimes I still wonder what she was thinking to even let me continue writing on her site!

So to the reasons why I love Dramabeans: it provides a 24/7 forum for interesting discussion on actors and dramas both on and off the set, inspiring venomous hatred and passionate ardor from fans around the world to fuel the long debates. It’s a mover-and-a-shaker; and without a doubt, Javabeans and Girlfriday are profoundly influential in the drama-watching world.

Every day, Javabeans and Girlfriday churn out well-written content one after another with frankness, insight, and well-founded opinions that you are free to agree or disagree with – but you can’t deny it’s made you curious about dramas or issues you never knew about before. The most important reason why I love Dramabeans? It’s because it wouldn’t be ‘dramabeans’ without Javabeans and Girlfriday. I toast to you gals a hefty cup of makgulli! One shot!

You’ve Only Just Begun – by sassychef

You know those “Ah-ha!” moments you have once in awhile? Well, discovering Dramabeans was one of those moments for me. My impatient nature (which I’m trying to work on, by the way) couldn’t wait for the next episode of Secret Garden, so I searched and searched online to see if anyone could feed my addiction on what to be expected. That’s when I came upon this little goldmine, and thus began my love affair with Dramabeans.

Not only was I able to find a place where I can find cache of goodies to put in my queue for further drama pleasure, but the posts were written in a sharp, witty and at times snarky ways that I loved! (I mean, come on! Girlfriday naming Ha Ji-won (playing Hyun Bin’s role) Joo-wanda. Joo-wanda!! LOL! How could I not come back for more??) Javabeans’ and Girlfriday’s love of drama and writing has led to creating a dynamic site that so many of us has come to love and cherish. Having had the honor and pleasure to become a part of this incredible team has been a fantastic journey so far, and can’t wait to be a part of the next 5,000 posts. Congratulations Dramabeans, and we love you!! xoxo

Congratulations To Dramabeans! – by Thunderbolt

Wow, 5,000? I still remember the first Dramabeans post like it was yesterday. (That one resonated with me because I’ve always been keenly interested in any discussion on fansubs. Incidentally, I love Javabeans for the many times she has stood up for fansubbers.) And in three short months the blog will celebrate its 5th anniversary!

I came to Dramabeans via the Dal-Ja’s Spring recaps that Javabeans first posted on Soompi. The recaps were so witty and well written I was floored. Over the years, I have grown to love many things about the site. The breadth and depth of the writing. The humor. The goodies that you share (all those songs!) and the surprises that you spring (girlfriday! podcasts! Santa!).

I love that the posts can be serious but also silly, and that there’s no such thing as too much squee-ing. I love the occasional catfights, too. (Bora must die! Why I like Jang Nara!) You taught me that not everything is newsworthy, but that which is worth writing about should be written with heart and commitment. You make me proud to be a kdrama addict. Happy 5,000 posts, Javabeans and Girlfriday!

Onward Ho! – by Dahee Fanel

If my goldfish memory serves me correctly, I first encountered Javabeans on the Dal-Ja’s Spring thread over at Soompi in 2007. She was smart and witty and apparently a coffee addict, so of course I liked her and her insightful contributions to the thread right away. Before long, she was posting recaps of the show in the thread. I read them even though I don’t, and didn’t, need summaries of a show to understand what was going on, thanks to my (sometimes) useful fluency in Korean. I read them and loved them. And then when I found out that she had a blog, I went there and read every single post. That was the beginning.

Dramabeans has gone through a lot over the years. As a cheering bystander, I’ve watched it wax and grow from a little blog that housed JB’s drama addictions, to the K-drama powerhouse it is today. There was a time when there weren’t many (or any, rather) English-language blogs on Korean dramas, just like there was a time when we had to rent tapes from Korean video rental stores to watch the dramas that we love, and had no one to discuss them with online. (Oh the loneliness of those days!) The times have changed, and now all us K-drama fans can gather and debate, growl and squee to our hearts’ contents. Dramabeans has become one of the most precious of these gathering places.

What I love about Dramabeans is its passion. The passion for Korean dramas, movies, actors/actresses, variety shows, and Korean culture in general. That passion, that love and commitment, seeps through every single word in every single blog post, and it has since the very beginning. This is how dramas should be watched. This is how they should be written about. With love, respect, humour, and intelligence. Dramabeans, through the magic fingers of Javabeans and Girlfriday, has done this for 5,000 posts. Here’s to 5 gazillion more. Congratulations!!

Two Truths – by samsooki

I’ll let you in on two truths to k-dramaland. The first seems axiomatic but really isn’t: whether one is a prince or a pauper, on the inside we are all the same. This is the basis of the magic that keeps us so enthralled: that all of us are equal, only differentiated by the extent of our pluckiness! Yet stepping back, this truth helps only a little in understanding the universe. For true exploration, a trustworthy guide is a must, as k-dramaland is a very big place. And dramabeans has been that wonderful guide, an orphic counselor that weaves analysis and deconstruction with passion and wit. And more! With its open commentary style, dramabeans has also developed a tight-knit community whose warmth and tolerance for newbies has seen its numbers multiply by a magnitude – and isn’t it true that samsooki himself was forged in the crucible of an open thread?

The other truth is that we tend to live entire lifetimes through each drama series, gaining cherished memories of our favorite characters along the way. As each series ends and others begin, even now, how many lifetimes has the dramabeans community all shared together, and how many memories have become so cherished? All thanks to Javabeans and Girlfriday, I can’t imagine a better place to be, lifetime after lifetime, learning and sharing, and laughing and crying with everyone here.

*******

And with those parting thoughts, the magical creatures bade each other a good night. With a nod and a cheery wave, each creature sent a heart-felt thanks toward Castle Dramabeans and then disappeared back into the mists of k-dramaland – to rest, work, sleep or play. It would not do at all to dawdle; after all, there are always more things to do in k-dramaland.

Congratulations to Javabeans, Girlfriday, and all the collaborators and 'stalkers' of this blog.
I discovered this site roughly 11 months ago, when I was unable to find episode 7 of Hong Gil Dong and started reading the reaps.
Since then your site has opened to me a whole new world of kdramas and new people to share my obsession with.

BIG THANKS! and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Congratulations you guys!!! I can't believe I've been visiting this site for almost 5 years how cool is that?! Although i could ill afford to have an internet installed due to my jobless state I convinced my brother to foot the bill until I could get another job. Well i am job hunting but I could not for the life of me live without Dramabeans, that was one of the perks of my former job unlimited DB access he he he.
I have a confession to make reading your recaps sometimes makes me too lazy to watch the actual drama but that all change with 1N2D it made me realize that recaps enhances the joy of watching. You get to be in on the joke which sometimes passes you by, blame cultural differences. So now that i have the time i'm going back and watching all the dramas that i passed up. I'm all giddy and excited it's like being on a high.
My addiction might wax and wane with the moon but Dramabeans is my constant sun.

Congrats on your 5000 post! I remember I first got hooked after reading the Coffee Prince recaps. The recaps were putting into words what I loved and felt about the series and adding even more insight and humor. And since then, I've fallen in love with kdramas and (since 1N2D recaps with Girlfriday) have fallen in love with Korea and its people (specifically Lee Seung-Gi).
Thank you so much for your hard work in delivering amazing reading material that is sometimes better than the drama itself!

thank you so much to all of you. this wouldn't be the site it is without the hours and hours of work you put in - sure, because you love these kdramas (more often than not, at least to laugh at? ;D) but there have been times you've no doubt been frustrated by comments and raging fans turned antis etcetc.

this is like my third stop on the internet and hope it will be for a long time to come

Oh my, congratulations!!!
Wow I've only been around for a year (mostly just a lurker), but to think this is dramabeans' 5000th post! I wish I had been around for that long and not missed any single post of this magical kdrama site, that's how much I love dramabeans!

Every time I saw a new post, I would always feel the excitement of reading yet, another writing, from dramabeans, girlfriday, samsooki, and the rest of the team. I love their humour (without being too squeely or fangirly) and insights (whether I agree or disagree but I only disagree sometimes). I've always been amazed of the fact that they can keep watching a drama they don't even like, just for the sake of sharing their criticisms to dramabeans and the readers. I don't think i'll be able to do that. It just shows their passion for kdramas.

Cheers for the 5000th post, and many many more to come! :D

Heartiest CONGRATULATIONS, Javabeans, Girlfriday and all the other writers in Dramabeans!! ;)

Such a milestone and yet not a surprising one because of the sheer AWESOMENESS of the originators of Dramabeans - the incomparably-talented and sassy Javabeans and Girlfriday - along with the other wonderful writers, as well as, the commentators who visit this blog and make this THE place to be for Kdrama lovers the world over.

What can I say? Javabeans and Girlfriday - both of you COMPLETE my Kdrama viewing with your highly intelligent, insightful, incisive, spot-on insights, analysis, thoughts, feelings and everything and anything on Kdramas.

I have never laughed as much as I have over drama recaps the way that I have over your exceptionally-hilarious recaps and I have never learnt so much from dramas the way that I have learnt from your cerebral inputs and criticisms of dramas.

May you both continue to grace our lives with your wit and humour for time infinite... ;)

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your hard work (and sleepless nights, I am sure) to bring to us never-ending entertaining and thought-provoking gems for all of us to ponder, reflect upon and learn from, for so long.

Take care and may God bless you both always! ;)

Lots of HUUUUGS and KISSESS!!! ;)

congratulations to the 5000th posts!

and what a nicely written fantasy article here!

dramabeans has become such an essential part of my daily life that I cannot recall how I stumbled upon the site in 2009 and got hooked.

dramabeans is one of a kind, the recaps are so good that for some shows, I even just read the recap without watching the actual drama!!

Also the entertainment coverage is credible, I come to trust that JB will not put up any unsubstantiated or yet to be confirm news. So what comes up here has credibility.

Besides urging JB, GF and the whole of dramabeans contributors to keep up the good work. I also want to suggest again that you use your dramabeans clout to lobby for things in k dramaland. first up -- the live shooting system!

Yab brought to this site, and i have been happy ever since. I visit this page everyday. i love the recaps and the insights , witty ones, to korean culture.

Congratulations, it must be great to have all these readers, it means you're doing a hell of a great job!!!

I don't adore coffe prince, to me it was utterly boring :S , maybe someday i will watch it again, i might have missed sth, same with Sam Soon.

I must admit that i have watched dramas that here are desregarded :( ...On air, Bethoven Virus, and they are on my favorite list. So not all the time, we think as you do, but that diversity makes this site even better. When i have followed your tastes, i have been surprised and touched, for example Floweres for my life. Omg!!! A thousand promises has caught my interest too....

Summing up, thank you girls. Long life to the site....

Drunken postcast to celebrate??? It was fun!!!

Thank you so much for all your work, you sassy creatures! :D

Congratulations on 5,000 posts! Any Kdrama I watch is an infinitely more special experience when you're recapping it.

All the extra insight you all add in regarding cultural practices or norms and play on words, etc. that you add in to your recaps that us non-Korean/ Korean speaking fans wouldn't have known or understood otherwise by just watching with subs always makes the drama experience that much more profound.

Love your witty, funny, and all around great recaps. I especially love when Javabeans and Girl Friday go one-on-one and get all down and snarky in their drama square-offs.

Here's to many, many more great recaps!

And if not for this site, I'd perhaps not watched MGIAG, and never discovered Lee Seung Gi *the horrors*..For that, I'm eternally indebted to GF :D

Thanks for it all and here's a toast to the many other 5,000 posts to come! *gulps the soju*

Thank you, Javabeans and Girlfriday, for growing a site that attracted and nurtured honesty and kindness. As thunderbolt said, we don’t always agree, but we never make the opposition feel stupid for their (wrong) opinions. (Ha!)

I am a former high-speed internet reader - guzzling content, rarely pausing long enough to pay attention to who was writing what was consumed. Maybe once in a while I found a site where I could put up my feet and set a while, but restlessness pushed me on. Picking through blogs, rummaging around, gathering more, what? Truths? Jokes? Insights? to fill my rag cart of information. What was I going to do with all those odds and ends of ideas I had collected?

Finding K-dramas was the first step in slowing that pace. Finding DB upended my cart of rags completely. All that time, thinking it was words I sought, I never imagined I would discover People. Community. Friends.

Every day, the writing is great. Every day, I feel fortunate to touch and be touched by words and ♥♥♥s here.

Felicitations on your 5,000! I know there will be a wonderful future of 1,000,000,000’s more!

Sometimes your recaps are more enjoyable than the show itself, or parts there of. Many Recaps have saved me time in screening out what I wouldn't enjoy. But I love your posts on Other Categories even more. Yours is a one-stop powerhouse on anything related to K-drama: Celebrity, Casting News, GQ and other photo spreads, Variety Shows, OSTs, etc. Then you take the trouble to change your banners all the time to give us a most enjoyable visit. On top of all that, your fans who comment here are a bunch of witty and hilarious folks. I laugh till I bend over!
Thank you for so much fun over the years!
Congratulations and All the Best!

Dramabeans changed my life. That's not an exaggeration, but a simple, true fact.

Because of this site, I've met and become friends with wonderful people all over the world (THE WORLD! Think about that for a minute. I'm from Mississippi!). People I would never have known existed if not for Dramabeans. I wouldn't have become interested in fansubbing, I wouldn't have gone to Korea... who knows what would have become of me? I shudder to think.

My heartiest congratulations on the success of this incredible blog, and my unending gratitude for information, the beautiful pics of beautiful people, the snark, the fangirling, the hilarity, and most of all, the joy you've brought me and countless others over the last few years. The words don't exist that would adequately convey how I feel, so I'll just say thank you, thank you, thank you.

5000 more posts? No problem. Y'all got this.

Anyways, Congratulations and Thank you so much Java beans and the gangs for providing a place where we can read your wonderful recaps, down load OST,share our thoughts about Korean dramas, cultures, pops and everything else, even recipes.

I can attest that by coming here on daily(sometime hourly during crack dramas are airing) bases, my life has been enriched so much in so many different ways.

5000 more to go? I'm sure I'll be around.

Big hugs for you all.

I only found this site during 2009 when the Boys Before Flowers craze started and I needed recaps to satiate my craving for a new episode, but I only became a dramabeans addict when You're Beautiful aired. I always check this site and am eternally grateful to javabeans and girlfriday as well as the other writers that have shared their thoughts on dramas here. You guys have really made drama watching more enjoyable for me. I love this little haven that you have built and don't know what I'd do without it.

This silent lurker has finally found the guts to give the warmest shoutout to the wonderful writers who have been generously feeding my k-drama addiction for years now.

Congratulations on your 5000th post, JB and GF!

Here's to more posts full of wit, fun and fangirling! :)

Cheers ♥
