Yoon-ah cast as Jang Geun-seok’s leading lady

Looks like it won’t be Han Hyo-joo after all; “Season drama” director Yoon Suk-ho has cast pop idol and SNSD member Yoon-ah as the female lead in Love Rain (still a working title, apparently), opposite Jang Geun-seok.

The plot: Love Rain is “a melodrama that transcends generations and paints a pure love story with emotion.” It spans from the “pure love of the 1970s analog age, to the trendy ways of today’s digital age.” Yoon-ah plays Kim Yoon-hee, a young woman with a pure appearance, in the 1970s portion of the drama, and then also plays her daughter, named Yuri.

Jang Geun-seok plays a man named Seo In-ha, and while we only get one name for him, according to initial reports it seems he’s also playing a father-son pairing. (GROAN. I get why Korean melodramas love this whole “sins and loves of the father carry on to the sins and loves of the child” theme, but this just seems like overkill.)

PD Yoon explained picking Yoon-ah for the role because of her “pure and healthy energy, and her natural beauty,” which seems like just the kind of thing you’d want in a character of Yoon-hee’s description.

That said: AW, man. I would really have rather he stuck with Han Hyo-joo. I can see how Yoon-ah and Han Hyo-joo both have that pure, fresh appeal going on that would make them both likely candidates, but I think Han is, as an actress, a much better match for a melo romance with Jang Geun-seok. I’ve seen Yoon-ah in Cinderella Man and little teeny bits of her daily drama You’re My Destiny…and I think she should stick to singing. As a part of k-poppy, upbeat-dancey, cutey-honey SNSD, she’s got her appeal, but in an acting capacity, she just doesn’t pop. Bland city.

Love Rain will begin filming at the end of the month, but won’t air until early 2012.

AW, man. Guess I won't be watching this one. Seriously, either I need to get over my aversion to non-Taecyeonite idols-turned-"actors", or they just need to stop casting idols as actors! (Some are okay I'll admit. But I'm honestly tired of seeing the same faces in every venue of entertainment just because THEY CAN. Stick with what you can actually do!)

yaikss!jang keun suk deserved a better leading lady that could be at least be at par with his talent. Yoona can't act, period! *sigh* there are so many good actresses in Korea, why cast an idol?because of SM Ent power, totally sucks!! these idols should stick with singing!so unfair for those real actresses being set aside because idols are being cast based merely on their popularity

How do you define "loved by Korea so much"? Moon Guen Young is loved by Korea so much too - but MMM did not do well; and MGY is in fact a much better actress.

Well, probably Korean dramas definition of "upskilling" their craft means "downskilling" overseas.

And the best way to upskill is to cast kpop dancing-singing-mini-skirt - swirling swirling - robotic ladies in colourful ribboned-headbands, knee socks....

hahahahaha...i'm disappointed too...better watch hongkong and chinese movies and dramas.

Better still, follow JKS in twitter - much more entertaining. If you want to read his hilarious twitts - his twitter name is "AsiaPrince_JKS". You will be entertained because he is now the King of Twitter.

Hold on.i even can't compare MGY to YoonA ;) i don't get it but if you notice every Korean guy's ideal woman is YoonA :/ there is something that i can not understand, which makes her their dream. While JGS is really really great actor. No Doubt. So i really wanted to see him with an actress not with an idol.
and to sum up;
i've already followed him,the day when he create an account :D and stuck with google translate to understand what Park Shin Hye,Lee HongKi and JGS talk about :D

@September

I agree with you, Yoona should stick to her singing and dancing with SNSD. Swirling, wriggling in miniskirts with colorful headbands and knee socks which appeal more to the youngsters and for those who like cheap entertainment.

She has no talent in acting, and with heavy subject like melodrama, will make it worse for her and a huge pain to the drama fans. What more as a leading lady beside heavyweights like JGS who has many years of experience in acting can turn the shooting of drama into a nightmare with many NG scenes.

I can see many drama fans are disappointed with this announcement. I am also one of them who is looking forward for a good drama with good actor like JGS and good PD but with a non compatible actress like Yoona, it has become a downturn.

Various positive and negative comments here.

I'll join the negatives:
*Reality is, her acting is "very flat" - a lot of positives commented that she had acting awards, had been through training in acting, etc = so why is it that her acting is still obviously "flat", "bland", "robotic"?

Her fans (the positives who commented here) are awestruck with her acting skills. Well, they have a much lower standard. they can argue until their faces will turn blue, indigo, red, lavender, purple etc - the truth is "her acting is still flat".

OMG, Yoon-Ah is the worst actress; I do have to give “THANKS” too her for helping me realize that I can stop watching K-drama in the middle of production. See, a self absorbs addict like me thought if I didn’t watch a K-drama till the end, it will stop production of all K-drama. If Yoon-Ah never did “You Are My Destiny” I would have still be in denial tell the drama “Mary Mary air. To be fair “You Are My Destiny, didn’t just have awful acting the storyline was terrible and the character developed, was non-existence. I’m a second chance kind of girl so I watch her in Cinderella Man and again awful. She was awful where there was no potential to think she be better; it was the kind of awful that left you embarrassed for her. I wasn’t planning on watching this drama, because the storyline/concept wasn’t interesting to me but it would differently be on my next lifetime list nothing personal just (not hot).

Aww,I was looking forward to it and....buhhhh.
Why does the PD have to take Yoona?
She's an idol, she can't act! This is a Melodrama, requires lots of crying scenes. Han Hyo Joo would be way better than her (although I was hoping for another actress). :(

Anyway,I read some of anon's comment. One question, why do you have to make everyone here to love Yoona's acting skill?
We all have our own opinions,if you think Yoona's acting skill is very good then stick with it.

"FYI im not obsessed with her. im not a sone either but she won my respect with her acting in yamd
by being disappointed with her casting, you guys are bringing up shit about her and that’s what made me unhappy."

That's what you said. Why would you care about us being unhappy with Yoona being cast? You said you're not obsessed with her yet you replied to every comments saying that her acting is bad. Sheesh. Grow up and act your age.

Flat and bland are some words which would describe Yoon-ah's acting.

If YMD is being used here as the gauge, let's say that she was lucky to have been in the company of very good actors; and besides, the story must have ben to the Korean public's taste; the timing was also good.

We should really give a chance for actors to prove themselves but she was already in a few dramas and acting wise, the quality remains the same.

There are those who can act and there are those who are just talented. Unfortunately, Yoon-ah just doesn't make the cut.

Honestly, I've never watched You're My Destiny or any of the other dramas where she was in. So when I read this, I YouTube-d scenes of her in YMD. They were, accordingly, the best scenes of her from that drama. Sadly, my initial assumptions of her acting skills were only solidified.

I'm not really sure but I think there are actresses who look really awkward when they act. The ones that make a drama painful to watch and makes you want to fast forward the crying scenes. She's one of those. I can't quite pinpoint why. She can cry (yep, with actual tears), but Yoona has always looked like a whiny, bratty little girl to me. And considering the role she will take in this melodrama, I don't think she can pull it off. Even her physical appearance doesn't really match with the role. I mean, she's cute (K-pop cute, that is) but I think the role calls for someone with a very classic and timeless beauty. Someone who can make existing in 1970s and 2011 believable.

Like the others here, I was looking forward to this drama. I just watched Baby and I and JGS really has an amazing screen presence. Once he's in the scene, he owns it entirely. He will eat her alive.

Oh, well. I'm not closing my doors. If I bump into good reviews in the future, I might try an episode or two. I mean, it's possible that Jang Geun Suk's eyes and smile might lure me into it. And who knows? Along the way, Yoona might prove me wrong.

Same here, I watched some of her supposedly best scenes on YT and I swear, watching her really made me cringe. I agree, the girl can cry a river, but sadly, she couldn't make me cry. This might sound mean, but the way she cried really cracked me up. When she cries, she doesn't look like a young woman, but a little girl who just lost her puppy.

Yoon ah's performance in Cinderella Man was so bad it was so painful to watch. I thought maybe that she was not mature enough to emote/express "love", falling in love & being in love...the spice/ingredients that goes with it. I don't know if she has improved because I don't want to waste my time watching her poor performance.

Jang Geun suk might encourage me to watch the "rain" drama...I don't know. There are so many choices in Kdrama so...wait & see. I feel sorry for JGS if YA will be still as bland. Good luck...its such a waste if...
I'm disapponted that its not HYJ/JGS.

I DIDN'T like Yoona's acting in the "Cinderella Man" and "9 Ends 2 Outs." She can't act and just makes me dislike her on screen. What is wrong with the producers and director ? I thought the director should know better as he has much experiences of picking actors with Acceptable acting skills.

Personally, I'm a soshi fangirl and I'm pretty excited about seeing her in a drama which doesnt have an incredible number of episodes.

Sure, she can't compare to professional actresses but some idols do turn out well, surprisingly. I hope she'll be able to pull this off!

Meh, what a turn-off but then so is the plot. I mean, I would prefer if JGS's characters of different eras are not related. Or maybe he was reborn into the present. I know it doesn't make sense but hey, at least it'll be more interesting. I dunno about you guys, but this thing about the parents' love story is kinda disturbing... and boring.

I really hate it when idol stars easily gets a role just because it's really unfair for the REAL actors. If their acting ability is really good, then yeah, sure, you're welcome in dramaland.

'PD Yoon explained picking Yoon-ah for the role because of her “pure and healthy energy, and her NATURAL BEAUTY,”' How shallow is this. Whatever happen to 'Never judge a book by its cover.'

Hahaha! Either way, I still think yoona failed despite all the people in here trying to back her up. She's totally overrated. You think that PD always choose the best actors and actresses? Hell nah they don't! This was totally for business to get this drama ratings up. I'm not tuning in to this one for sure because yoona just killed it for me. Even though I don't like Han hyo joo too, but she would have been a far greater choice for this drama. Hopefully jgs over kills yoona in that drama.

I would say that this drama seems like it is trying to target the Japanese market, reason being that the market is bigger and there's more profit. The writer's drama "Winter Sonata" was a huge craze in Japan and I think they're using both of the leads to garner interest. That being said, the disappointment people expressed is understandable but I say give it a chance, people can improve. I thought Han Hyo Joo's acting wasn't that great in "Spring Waltz" but I love dramas so I don't try to judge on past experience (doesn't mean I'll have high expectations) and ended up watching "Shining Inheritance" and "Dong Yi," and thought her acting has improved immensely. All I have to say is give Yoona and this drama chance and see where that goes.

Watching Yoona in Cinderella Man was like having a bad trip. I struggled ep by ep...hoping Yoona's performance would improve. Watching her was like urging my constipated child to push it out or urging a birthing mother to push that baby out. Push!
I kept on watching to give it a chance...for the story is a good excuse. I coped by watching a real good Kdrama in between. But never again!
I didn't mind her blandness in 9E2O because she was only in the supporting role as a b* teen. The main leads & other cast were superb.
I could not get past ep 1 in YMD for fear of the same trauma in CM.
Good luck JGS.

I pray hard for God surprising all of u that love rain will become big hit drama in 2012.
Comparing her with Hyo jo to be into lee hana character, PD just said the reason.
Pure,beuaty and innocent look!
For me,hyo jo is more suitable with short hair. Her long hair doesn't make a sense for her. Her cheerful expression is best at her age. But,doesn't make her look younger. Its different with yoona. This drama have two roles portrait. And i bet yoona is more suitable to appear in two different roles.
I love all hyo jo dramas actually. And yoona either.
yoona is not a new one in acting. If you said, high rating drama doesn't mean actor just acted good, the same condition if the drama didn't get high, it doesn't mean that actor acted bad.
Read all your comment about her acting even her ability in dance and singing, some of you are more rude than anon who got many insult because she/he is a yoona's fan.

It seems most of us try to watch drama because who act in it,right?
But,the drama become a big news if it success under pressure of negative comment.
I hope love rain is one of it.

Let's not start spewing hate so early soon-to-be spinsters, alright? Most of the commenters sound like 12 year old girls. You haven't even watched it yet. And not only that, but really...adamantly refusing to give a stupid show a chance because of one actress? It honestly just sounds like pure envy and jealousy to me. And I don't even care for Yoona that much, although I see the talent in her that many of you choose to turn a blind eye to. To that commenter who said she's not pretty AT ALL? really now...I don't think I really believe that at all. Those kinds of comments make me suspicious that you are envious. Maybe some of you like to jump on the bandwagon who knows. Anyway, get a life and try fantasizing about how pretty you can make yourselves without spewing so much negativity. It's people like you that make the world an ugly place.

but feels like I'm watching a wall. She hasn't moved my heart or made me cry (Maybe it works on others). I've become numb when I see her face. Sorry this is my opinion and observations.

I remember the first time I watched MGY in Cinderella's sister, she wowed me and made me cry. And I wasn't really fan of her and now I've become to like her.

After seeing a lot of melodrama tv dramas and movies. My standards has changed. Love rain is just beautifully executed with fancy cinematography. Story line, nothing new there. I've seen indie movies that seems boring but later made a big impact in someone's life.
