Park Shi-hoo and Jung Jae-young play cat and mouse

Actors Park Shi-hoo and Jung Jae-young have been cast to play opposite each other in a new action thriller film called I Am a Murderer. Well, that’s direct. No dillydallying about, eh? When I saw that they had been cast as a detective and a killer, I assumed that they’d play to type — Park Shi-hoo as the good guy, Jung Jae-young as the bad guy. But they’ve both been cast against type, and against each other… which makes me instantly fascinated in the movie.

Park Shi-hoo will be playing a serial killer who gets prosecuted and does his time, and ends up writing a bestseller that details his crimes called I Am a Murderer. HA. I already love this premise. Okay, so serial killer turns bestselling author (true crime in the most literal sense of the genre), and then apparently something happens to make him a suspect in a fresh set of killings. That means he’s out of jail, right? But what kind of serial killer doesn’t serve multiple life sentences?

Jung Jae-young plays the dogged homicide detective who goes after the case, and the killer-turned-author-maybe-turned-killer-again. That sounds like a great psychological thriller mixed with action, and if he were a reformed killer who advised the cops on murderer psychology, they’d have a TV show. Wouldn’t they make the best odd couple?

Park is currently starring in the KBS fusion historical drama The Princess’s Man, and Jung’s latest film Countdown with Jeon Do-yeon is in theaters now. I Am a Murderer will be helmed by PD Jung Byung-gil of action-comedy-documentary Action Boys, and starts shooting October 7.

EXACTLY...do they not understand the psych behind serial killing at all??? This makes no sense at all imo

My first thought was actually that not only life sentence but there would be capital punishment applicable. Like in Maundy Thursday with Kang Dong Won. But there would be no story...

Maybe he is still in jail...but there is now a copycat(because of his book)...and then the part about "reformed killer who advised the cops on murderer psychology" makes perfect sense :) I want to see this now.
I loved Lee Jeong-Jin as a bad guy, Park Shi-hoo would be even better :)

Agree with you.

My initial suspicion was a copycat.

We-eeell if Park Shi Hoo's character got off lightly from the murders, perhaps it's one of his victim's friends who is doing the fresh killings to frame PSH.

I know. A serial killer can be reformed? Say wha...?

Required fields are marked *

Sure. If we can have vampires and zombies we can have serial killers that can get reformed in jail's... Now we can even go for a Vampire Prosecutor crossover- he will discover the copycat killer by vamp-testing the victims blood.

nooo, i heard PSH's character wrote his book AFTER seventeen years. if you didnt know, in korea, if you commit a murder and don't get caught in 17 years (correct me if im wrong..), youre not guilty anymore.

I think you might be right. How'd it go in Princess Prosecutor again? Hmm, idr how long the statue of limitations was in PP. Heh, funny how Park Shi Hoo was in that drama.

Very interesting.

Reminds me of "White Collar," except it's a con-artist and not a killer.

I can, too. Serial killers often look harmless, or even handsome - it's actually a factor in their success, because nobody assumes such a thing about such a nice-looking, charming man.

And in terms of fiction, the good-looking charming bad guys are always the most effectively scary ones, IMO.

But, yeah. Such a young guy who is a committed serial killer should NOT be out of prison. That's creepy in itself, really.

Maybe the assumption is he's committing the crimnes from inside prison somehow, with a helper...? Or escaping and returning secretly?

Izt sounds unlikely, I know, but I really don't want to think they set him free after 5 or 10 years or something...

Oh, I'm so in for this. I would have expected Park Shi Hoo to be the killer, though, simply because being a detective fits him even less. xD

But hell - bestselling author??? Can't wait to see that... Him giving Jung's character, as you say, some advice on murder psychology would also be brilliant.

Wasn't a cannibal let out of jail? and he went on the tv circuit and such? However he committed the crimes in France and his family was well connected so....

maybe they couldn't agree on the guilt only that he was guilty of lesser crimes? who knows....

This plot reminds me of the real-life case of Jack Unterweger. He was convicted of murder in 1970s Austria, authored stories and poems in prison, and then was released early in 1990. The Austrian intellectuals made him into a model for rehabilitation, and Unterweger became a well-known poet and journalist. Meanwhile, Unterweger was going around murdering women. There was apparently a similar case with an American prisoner, Jack Henry Abbott (became writer in prison, released early, committed murder).

But then, it seems that neither Unterweger nor Abbott were convicted of being serial killers the first time around. So if Park Shi Hoo's character was convicted of multiple murders and then released early, that would be messed up.

John Malkovich is portraying Unterweger in a performance called Infernal Comedy now. I bought tickets for it in New York, but I just read a bad review of it :(

Here's an article about the performance (just descriptive and going into the story of Unterweger). http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jun/30/malkovich-jack-unterweger-vienna-austria

I actually thought of Sagawa Issei, the Japanese guy who wrote that book about his murder and cannibalization of a French woman and then went on to become a celebrity. He works as a speaker, a writer, and makes regular appearances on TV. Not a serial killer (as far as we know - he walked free only 5 years after committing the murder), but the whole writing about murder thing definitely brought this guy to mind.

Well... actually he could be guilty of multiple homicides and convicted for those crimes but get sprung from jail if there was something wrong with the prosecution's case -- e.g., tampered with witnesses or evidence -- and in some cases if the case cannot be sufficiently retried the criminal will be released. And, thanks to the concept of "double jeopardy," you cannot be tried twice for the same crime in many cases. (BTW, this also works for innocent people ).

I'm going to be the annoying one and point out a correction. Jail is where someone goes prior to convictions and also when initially arrested, but without bail money for release during a trial. Prison is where someone goes when convicted of a crime. They're not interchangable in meaning. :)

I'm really psyched for this as they're both against type and the plot sounds juicy if the writing holds.

A few theories on why he's be out after seventeen years: If he served his time, it could just be for one murder and they were never able to convict him on the rest. Makes the book extra vicious since it was probably released after the statute of limitations had expired as someone else pointed out. Another line of reasoning is the book caused him to get out due to various details, noting something fishy on the prosectution side, or corruption of evidence. We also don't know what kind of pull he has. It could also be that he served for murder, but it wasn't ruled as pre-mediated, but maybe involuntary manslaughter instead.

Just a few theories besides my cynical "The system let's someone because he killed people no one cares about and/or employed the I-was-very-drunk-and-won't-do-it-again-I'm-so-sorry spile". Anyways! Very excited for this film and already can't wait for just the first stills to come out!

Not a genre that I particularly seek out, but if it ends up being good, or even decent, I'll definitely check it out for the actors. Am a fan of both Jung Jae-young and Park Si-hoo. Park Si-hoo's first movie role has got to be exciting for him. Love him and hope he knocks it out of the park. Am not familiar with the writer and PD, hope they make a good pair.

Ahh, Park Si Hoo. He's finishing up TPM this week and starting on this movie next week. >_< He's on a roll.~~ I love this man so much! I remember he joked about trying out a movie after QOR, but then TPM was announced and so i thought he'd scrapped that idea. I'm excited he hasn't because he's got so much charisma on the small screen that i think everyone needs to see it on the big screen too. This has got to be exciting for him, especially because his character is so unlike his others (well, except for Seung Yoo in TPM, who did come back to kill). XD I think he'll play the role well, considering his ease into the dark tone in PP (sorta) and especially in TPM. At least this time, he won't be an elite/noble/chaebol. ^^ Woo, i'm excited!!

"That means he’s out of jail, right? But what kind of serial killer doesn’t serve multiple life sentences? "

The type that they couldn't get for all the murders he committed.

If they could link him to one murder, and not strongly enough to convict for a life sentence, it's possible. I remember watching an A&E special on a serial killer that did something similar but they got him in the end, I think. It's been a while since I saw it.
