Man of Honor holds script rehearsal

Three weeks to go until the Baker King Kim Tak-gu team’s follow-up drama, Man of Honor, premieres on KBS. The sizable cast convened on the 10th for a table read, and while the three main leads are Chun Jung-myung (The Duo), Park Min-young (City Hunter), and Lee Jang-woo (Smile, Dong-hae), there are a ton of other names involved, including:
Phew! That’s alotta names. Apparently these days even making it to a table read doesn’t assure you of a job, but with a 100% attendance rate and less than a month till go time, I think we’re safe on this one.
The big question is whether the creative minds that made Baker King into a ratings powerhouse can re-create that success with Man of Honor. In these days where ratings in the mid-teens is considered a success (and merely hitting double digits a relief), it’s almost outrageous to dream of breaking 40%. But Baker King served up that mix of addicting makjang plot twists and speedy developments that Korean audiences just eat up, securing its status as a national drama. (One thing to temper expectations: Baker King had more episodes to build up its crescendo, while Man of Honor is scheduled for six fewer, at 24 total.)
You can see the similarities in the two dramas in the basic plot description: Man of Honor tells the story of a young man who struggles to overcome his downtrodden fate and achieve success. Where Baker King had the world of bread as its backdrop, Man of Honor plays out within the baseball world. I wonder if we’ll have birth secrets, philanderers, and spiteful chaebols in this one, too. Oh, right. This is a Korean drama. Of course we will.
The drama will replace currently airing sageuk The Princess’s Man on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning October 12.

"makjang :: a sylistic, tonal, or narrative element in dramas that chooses to play up outrageous storylines to keep viewers hooked despite how ridiculous the stories become (adultery, revenge, rape, birth secrets, fatal illnesses, and flirting with incest possibilities are some makjang favorites). Shows can be part of a makjang class of dramas (Wife’s Temptation is a makjang series), or they can have makjang tendencies (Mary Stayed Out All Night went makjang toward the end). Generally considered a negative thing (“Gah, how makjang can you get?”), unless a drama intentionally embraces the style (such as Baker King Kim Tak-gu or Flames of Desire)."

That team sure knew what they were doing with Baker King: makjang plus the mystique of food plus loads of heart-tugging sentiment plus classy, slick sets & photography & a nice dramatic score. It'll be interesting to see if they can work the magic again with a sports story.

I hope it is not too similar to Baker King. Baker King was good but over-rated. Coming fresh from CH and with the recent dating news, it is hard to see PMY with someone else even in dramaland. Maybe....next year when the memories fade.

Cannot wait for my baby-faced CJM and Lee Jang-Woo to come together in this.
It's like a marriage of my drama and variety show loves haha :D
I've been having a thing about revisiting old 'daily' type dramas lately. Rewatched 'Smile, Donghae', 'Smile, You', 'Life is Beautiful', 'Sons of Sol' etc.

Oh Lee Jang Woo... it's gonna be hard to see him in any other character than Dope-jin, but I guess I'll have to try. But dude, that hairstyle is FUGLY!! You also had it in your cousin Hwanhee's video, but figured you'd ditch it for your next project. Consider it a 'fashion DON'T,' and go see your stylist, k? You'll thank me later... :-)

I think most successful k/dramas these days do involved story of FOOD.

I am excited to see Jang Woo in something. I heard he was good in Smile Donghae, but I'm not gonna watch that and I love him on "We got married"! He is my favorite husband since season 1 (I loved Andy so much). I'm glad to see Chun Jung Myung again too.
