Gong Yoo and Jung Yumi in The Crucible
by girlfriday
Wow, I was already excited to see Gong Yoo‘s dramatic turn in his first serious, weighty film, but this trailer blew me away. It gave me proper chills. This movie’s subject matter is as dark as dark can be, but damn does it look GOOD. Here’s a look at Gong Yoo and Jung Yumi in the upcoming film The Crucible, an adaptation of a novel by bestselling author Gong Ji-young, based on a true story about a rape at a school for the deaf.
Gong Yoo plays a new teacher at the school who finds that his students harbor a lot of pain and distrust. Over time he slowly earns their trust and discovers the horrifying truth — that they’ve been abused, violently and sexually. Jung Yumi plays a passionate human rights activist who helps him uncover the crimes and try to bring the guilty to justice, against insurmountable odds.
In the trailer the students give testimonies, and Gong Yoo narrates as they sign. He becomes their voice, and as they begin to open up about the abuse, it’s his moment of discovery too — it’s terrifying, and gripping, and dramatically really well done.
The story is based on a case at a school for the deaf in Gwangju that went on from 2000-2005. The accused famously had enough clout to get off with a ridiculously light sentence, which enraged author Gong Ji-young at the time, and inspired her to write the book. The film adaptation is directed by PD Hwang Dong-hyuk (My Father), who said, “I worried that it was dark subject matter, but once I found out that the victims were fighting to appeal and reopen the investigation, I thought that the film might help that effort in a small way, so I decided to make it.” That’s the best reason to make a movie I’ve ever heard of.
The Crucible premieres September 22.

I cried while watching the teaser, it's such a sad, heartbreaking story :(
I really hope it'll help with reopening the case and that the bastard who did that to those poor kids will finally pay the price for his actions.

i don't think i'd be able to watch that movie. i'm not making light of what happened and i do believe it is a story that needs to be told, i just don't think my heart could take it. i suffer from major depression and hearing how light the sentences were for the abusers just sent me spiraling down. the trailer and imagining the fear and suffering of those victims could send me into a depressive episode for days, that's how much this story affects me. like i said it needs to be told but it is difficult to stomach. the depravity of some people sickens me to no end.

How awful that people in power not only abused the innocent kids but there were others who enabled these abusers to get off lightly when it was time to acknowledge their sins and take real punishment.
I appreciate how heartbreaking it is for someone such as the teacher played by GY to learn about what was happening to the students.
In the end though my thoughts are with the children. I wonder how they are now.

I'M SO OUTRAGED RIGHT NOW. What kind of evil, sick, depraved, cruel person would abuse handicapped children??!! I'm so glad that this case is in the stages of being re-investigated. How the hell did the offenders get light sentences?? I really hope this movie helps prioritize this case and that justice can be served.

this case reminds me of Itaewon Homicide whereas the film maker intended to bring it up once again hence the movie.
go movie-maker! let the reason for you to make a movie be the most genuine reason of them all... to tell people real stories and change the world even though in a small portion

That's just so sad that people would attack a deaf school I guess cause they figured "they can't talk" so they would get away with it.
I hope this movie does SO well that even the people who got off with that light sentence will feel bad and reopen the case!

God bless this movie and all those who stand behind it.
Other than the trailer, the Making promo is also very captive - esp the funeral/water blast scene.
The entire cast looks stunningly strong.

What do you think the chances are that this movie would be subbed in English and available on line at some point?
I have just started watching KDramas this summer, and don't know anything about movies - but if I end up loving the movies as much as I love the dramas, I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep working!

I cried whilst watching the trailer and also felt so irate that the culprits were sentenced so lightly. I do feel sorry for the children for what they've went trough and hopefully it will NEVER occur again to anybody. I do not comprehend Korean language, however, the trailer was conveyed so powerful that I end up getting chills. :(

Wow that was... just beyond words. I'm so excited Gong Yoo is stepping out into other genres and it seems like this project might give him the little boost he needs to become a "real" actor. The story itself is just... wow. I don't even know what to say. I think I almost teared up watching the trailer. I hope the kids in that school finally gets justice. I'm glad that cinema is now moving towards making changes and not just for money. I'd be honored to watch this movie if I get the chance.

I'm kind of curious about the actually story behind it. 'Cause I can't find it anywhere. I would also like to read the novel that is based off of the actually story as well, however it hasn't been translated into English.
It's so sad that even through we are told that humans live off of love and compassion for one another, horrific acts against those society deems as "abnormal/useless/disabled" are discriminated throughout the world.

I watched it for the first half an hour and i stopped. cos if i were to continue, i'm afraid i won't be able to sleep tonight. The emotions of the adults and kids get to me in such a thorough way that it chills me and scares me at the same time. As much as i understand it's a gem, i doubt i will finish it. Maybe the day will come but definitely not now... haiz...
