Warrior Baek Dong-soo contemplates extension
by javabeans
The reigning Monday-Tuesday drama, SBS’s action sageuk Warrior Baek Dong-soo, is reportedly in talks to extend its run by six episodes, which would take the show from 24 episodes to a total of 30.
A source with the show confirmed that the extension is currently being seriously considered, and the actors are being consulted regarding the extra installments. While a final decision has yet to be made, the source also stated that a 30-episode run has always been a possibility, so an extension wouldn’t be detrimental to the story flow.
If the extension is confirmed, that pushes the Kim Rae-won/Su Ae melodrama Thousand Day Promise (written by hitmaker scriptwriter Kim Soo-hyun) to October.
SBS has got a good thing going with strong dramas airing practically every night of the week: Scent of a Woman just broke 20% and is winning on weekends, while Protect the Boss is second in its Wednesday-Thursday timeslot, but still holding strong with mid- to upper-teen ratings.
While I’m not following this series, it seems from various accounts that its current plot would support an extension, and with six weeks to go before reaching its original end date, there’s plenty of room to adjust the story to accommodate a longer run. And that gives the drama extra time to mine the burgeoning good-versus-evil face-off between pretty boys Ji Chang-wook (good) and Yoo Seung-ho (the dark side). As well as tossing in a few more manly hairstyles. Because, as girlfriday so sagely points out, “Baek Dong-soo. It’s all about the hair.”

This is a great drama. I don't know if I care so much for the extension to 30 episode. I like the pace of each episode so far. It's just sad that so many people had to die along the way. I just hope none of the main and secondary characters die.

Crown Prince Sado was meant to die to make way for his intelligent and very capable son and future King Yi San.
Gyebaek has nothing on WBDS imo which makes me sad cause I was really looking forward to it.

If they extend the show, they should bring the Jin Ju family story arc to the front. That's been beautifully written and acted.

About the Ji Sun/Jin Ju/Dong Soo relationship, i thought that in the manhwa Dongsoo married both girls, didn't he? So it shouldn't be a problem =D

Jin Ju and Baek Dong-soo haven't had their reunion yet. She doesn't even know he's back. That, to me, signaled a possible extension to the story.
This is also very bad news for Gye Baek. I think an extension would effectively kill MBC's show.

"I can tell you read the thread on soompi!"
Yes indeed. That thread is similar to the situation with Iljimae. What Mister Barca says is right . . . the Nun and Dong Soo storyline is a standard device in sageuks, and it's rare for the "bright girl" to end up with the hero. It's a role that is similar to Han Hyo Joo's character in Iljimae, or Song Ji Hyo's in Jumong.
However, everybody knows Dong Soo's real love is Yeo Woon. All those smoldering looks (and competitive manes of glory) cannot lie!

So I am the only one in the whole wide universe (OK, Dongsoo, too) who actually likes Jisun?
B..b...but... That is cold, yo. *big gulping sobs*
Shin Hyeon-bin had a strong start and I adored her, but she has been slipping lately, even I will admit that. Yoon So-yi started out unbearable and actually affected my love for the character largely, but has actually began steadily improving lately. I'm kind of torn. I'm actually liking both lately.
Ahh... fudge it. 'S all about the bromance.

With the looks they give each other, I assume the Nun chooses Yeo Woon in a sort of reverse-love-triangle from the prior generation (Nun loves Bad Guy but chooses Good Guy because that is the life she chose to live.)
It looks like the courtesan spy may also have feelings for Yeo Woon (who doesn't really -- I'm sure Un also wants to tap him some jailbait of glory too ;) ) With Jin Joo and guest appearances by the Painter of the Wind, in effect, we have a Love Septagon.
So much angst. This show needs more guyliner.

I so agree with you. I think she should be with Un and leave Dong Soo for Jin Ju. I wish they had chosen a more experienced actress to play the part. It's an important role and if she acted the part well, she would seemlessly intergate into the story even after the map was removed from her back. Now with the map gone, I just find that she is pushed into the story for the sake of it.
supah

''Now with the map gone, I just find that she is pushed into the story for the sake of it.''
I'm hoping not...
See, our naive Dongsoo's 'free will' may have won his battle against Fate that day, but I think it's almost assured he will lose his war against Fate and eventually concede to it. Which means the whole map story and Jisun's importance may be erm, dormant for now but I feel it will make a comeback.
I am actually against a six-episode extension, 'cos seriously the writing is incredibly tightly structured. The writer seems to be very Jang Yeong-cheol inspired in his writing style. As in, I fcuking love him! (And he heavily revolves around Fate. I am such a sucker for this style of writing)
One or two episodes might actually be needed, because there is a lot of things needing resolving story-wise but from what I read circa pre-production the show was undecided for a long time whether or not to be a 24 or 30 episode series, so I think they may actually have prepared for either.

"I am actually against a six-episode extension, ‘cos seriously the writing is incredibly tightly structured. "
I think the Jin Joo storyline was designed as a means to possibly extend the show. She hasn't changed that much, even when learning about her mother. But, now that she has lost her mother, will we see a revenge arc? A reason for Baek Dong Soo to save Jin Joo?
There's enough episode to develop this. Plus, Chun is no longer playing for either side. He's become a ronin. In fact, I think the knowledge of Jin Joo (whether she was his or not) revealed not sadness or regret in him . . . but fulfillment. Chun loved Ga Ok, but even if she returned his love, he wasn't going to stop killing. He would have stopped for Jin Joo. Upon learning that she could be his daughter, he stopped drinking. That is all you need to do. He stopped wandering; he found his happiness.
And that happiness probably broke his heart. Choi Min Soo plays the ironic developments like a pianist.

I don't think it a needs for an extension it's going at a nice pace and too much bromance can get tiresome. I do love me some Chun, Choi Min Soo plays this character so well. I totally understand how Ji fell for the swordman but stayed by Chun side.
There are so many good part in this drama but they fell short on making it great for example, except for Jin who is a badass her daughter (Jin Sun) and the other actress act like they don't know a damm thing about fighting. Jin Su was using that bow since she was a child and I'm sure with her adopted father crazy fighting skills she should have learn some kind of hand to hand combat as she was growing up. Helllllo (Director) she the daughter of JI and Chun the (Don't play with me or I kill you couple) isn't it automatic that she have "Columbiana" DNA running through her bloodline. Instead of taking her to the next level in fighting skills her character convert to a weak, run and hide woman that do not fix her character or the enviroment she was brought up in, so (disappointing).
I can understand an extension if there going to me more character development but the storyline itself can be wrap up without a extension.

I must say, I don't mind an extension...but I agree to almost everyone here that says the nun is a disappointment. they could have chosen a better actress to play the part, although the young Ji Sun is 10 times better....and I would prefer her to be the older Ji Sun but the actress is only sixteen so ......
I root for DS/JS since it looks like this is the OTP in the story...but the actress could have done better....just saying.

I am a fan of Ji Chang-wook for this show. I read from various forums that Yo Seung-ho is the one getting all the attention and kinda feel sorry for JCW. By the way, not sure what others think but I totally like Dong-soo's new hairstyle! He looks much more mature and he reminds me of all those Jin Yong characters I love :)

You're not the only JCW fan here. I didn't even know who he was till I started watching WBDS. But now I'm really impressed with him. YSH was already well known before this so its not surprising that people are talking about him more. And anyway, the bad guys usually get the attention even in real life.
I miss the old Dong Soo though. I wish he'd go back to being at least a little more light hearted. I guess being betrayed by your best friend takes it toll on immaturity.

"I didn’t even know who he was till I started watching WBDS. But now I’m really impressed with him."
I second that. I like JCW as the lead in this drama. He plays the role really well. YSH, on the other hang, plays the bad guy really well also. If their roles where switched, well, I just can't see YSH playing the carefree role of baek dong soo.

YSH hasn't cracked a real smile in this entire show, but if you've seen him as Chunchu (Queen Seon Duk), he can play goofy too.
To be honest, YSH's age is now showing in his acting. The charisma and dialogue delivery are both there, but YSH isn't really taking the character's stoic persona in any direction. He just doesn't have the emotional experience yet to reveal more than a pokerface. His experience with sageuks, where he's evolved a noble presence that inspires forbidden smiles from one Hjkomo, has enabled him to get a pass.

"YSH’s age is now showing in his acting. " Yes, his lack of experience is more evident the more complex the role becomes. But he's so charsimatic as YW that I forgive him. And anyway, cold and poker face characters are hard to play. His fight scenes are amazing though.

totally. both the leads are going to have trouble bringing depth to their characters from here on out. i want yeo woon to go even darker so the contrast when he comes back will be even greater, and i'm having a hard time buying that dong soo is all mature now because of his new haircut. He's getting there, but he needs more face wrinkles to complete the effect! ;)
does anyone else see how woon is become more and more like cheon and dong soo more and more like the sword saint (mannerisms, style of talking, gait, smirks, etc.) their relationships are paralleled through their apprentices.
I agree, i can't see ysh playing bds. he fits the bad guy role so well. ji chang wook fits in the same category as yoon shi yoon from baker king. they're the type of good guys you want to root for.
i like actors that portray an honest earnestness (is that redundant?) that's why i find gong yoo and go soo so hot. when they fall in love with a girl in a drama, you can really see it in their eyes. (sorry that was off tangent! just had to express my love for gong yoo somehow :P)

@ninsrama,
"i want yeo woon to go even darker so the contrast when he comes back will be even greater,"
Yeo Woon doesn't have "The Face" yet to speak through such a stoic character. YSH is one of the most prodigious young actors in Chungmuro . . .but he's still 18 years old.
"does anyone else see how woon is become more and more like cheon and dong soo more and more like the sword saint "
Not only that -- Yeo Woon is already aware that Dong Soo has probably surpassed him (well except for Fake Killing, Yeo Woon is Best Fake Killer Alive! :D ) My guess is the romantic triangle will be in reverse, though. Naruto cares for Nun, but Nun loves Sasuke.

"Yeo Woon is already aware that Dong Soo has probably surpassed him". I loved the pride in YSH voice when he acknowledges DS's skill. "Joseon's best swordsman." It's almost like an older brother's pride at his younger siblings accomplishment. There was no trace of jealousy at all. I really like how YSH potrayed that.
All this naruto sasuke nun talk makes me want to watch Naruto.

Yeo Woon: The new hair looks good on you.
Dong Soo: Does it? I need to look good when I kill you.
Yeo Woon: Very manly.
Dong Soo: Really? I had a stylist do this while I was planning to kill you.
Yeo Woon: It makes me think of the times when we played with our bows in the rain.

I noticed him for the first time in Sons of Sol Pharmacy House..although his scene is very minor but I luvvv his gently eyes...full with love for everybody and how he love the little baby is very cute...then I saw him in Smile Dong Hae, it is daily drama but it's very popular and get high rating.. He already become first lead there.
I am very happy knowing he get role in saeguk because I'm one of saegul lover. and watching WDBS...waw...his acting skill has improve a lot..and in this project, the writer and director give many thing for his character (and I think they forgot to explore more of YSH character, although YW is second lead character but I think that they should give them fair attention)..
WDBS make me love first lead character in saeguk, usually I get second lead character more because their sad fate...but because JCW acting, and goofy Dong Soo make me love him...(I think it's alright when Dong Soo become more mature because he will be best sword man in joseon so he should start think seriously..although I miss old Dong Soo too...sigh)
Ji Chang Wook hwaiting!!!! sigh...I become fan of dongseng...usually I am not fan of young actor, I prefer Song Ill Gook, Kim Nam Gil or Yoon Kye sang..but JCW eyes and smile already kill me...awwwhggh

Yea, I don't like the ginseng conspiracy either. It's almost like they don't know where the story is heading and just putting that in to fill up the episode? Unless of course that has a connection to the whole main story line, then sure. However, Iwould rather see more of the assassins-bad guys against the prince-dongsoo-good guys fight it out.

*Sigh* an extension will probably kill my show Gye Baek. Poor LSJ *sigh*
I am not sure if the show needs an extension as they have good episodes e.g. 16 then followed by meh episodes and am worried it will be more like Yisan 2.0.
I can't really wait for some characters to be killed off like minister of war, and Dae Un so I don't know how much I will bear watching them.
On the other hand, more Choi Min Soo is a good thing. I seriuosly hope that he is really the father of Jin Ju and Ga Ok didn't lie to him to force him to save her. If she did he would be crushed(break my heart) and he will go on a killing spree which I don't necessarily mind. He is totally doing a better job depicting his character than the Swordmaster (who was awesome in Jumong but here meh).
I like Dong Soo and I think the actor playing him is doing a much better job than the actor playing Woon.

"an extension will probably kill my show Gye Baek. Poor LSJ "
Yeah, that's the sad irony of the situation Gye Baek has its flaws (mainly the Eul Ja storyline -- it's not bad, but the court intrigue feels as tired as Dong Yi)
But when the show keeps the focus on Gye Baek, and Gye Baek and Eun Go, the mix of conscience and quiet sadness emotions does recall Damo. This couple already has a haunted feel about them. GB's music is so rich and varied (some of it recalls Mahler.) Also, the show uses a close-up camera technique that focuses on the character's reactions, that dramatically just works.
It's a shame. I love Baek Dang Soo as a cartoon (with complex, ambivalent emotions sensitively and quietly portrayed along the Chun-SS-HJG-OG-Jin Ju arc.) But Gye Baek just has weight and romantic presence.

True dat. Baek Dongsoo has everything but weight.
I think the show shot itself in the foot by its own ''don't take me seriously, I iz strictly Adventure-p0rn!'' approach. Because now it won't be taken seriously at all (at least not by any self-respecting, serious sageuk watchers). Why that's a problem? Just... It's a shame. It has such talent and skill in its writer (you can knock it for its lack of originality, but not the writing style), its music director and its fine, fine cast (bar 1-2 exceptions). Because really how can a show that has assembled a cast THIS good (dammit, even Song Gyeong-cheol! Yesss!) - not make you its slave?
Lee Hyun-jik is a decent director too, he is pouring all of his strengths into this project, that is heart, substance, smarminess, a fluid transition between lighthearted moments to the melodrama… personality, atmosphere -- all elements that just jump out from the screen at you. And utilising his cast's talents to maximum effect. (No, I'm not throwing his 'Robbyist' into this equation -- wouldn't watch that, even at gunpoint.) But if there is one thing he cannot do, that is… weight.
Kim Hong-seon is only good for the gory scenes. (Actually, some sites still have Lee Myung-woo on the shows list of PDs but then some lazy sites still have Park Geun-hyung as King Jeongjo, so...)

@supah,
"I think the show shot itself in the foot by its own ”don’t take me seriously, I iz strictly Adventure-p0rn!” approach. "
Nah, I'm the other side with that. The live cartoon feel of the show is what makes Baek Dong Soo work. For the most part, the overall cameawork actually isn't very good either. Director has used various techniques that frankly seem like a college student production, yet it carries its own charm. Same with the music. The music (as with Chuno) plays up the fight scenes as if it were anime.
The court intrigue hurts this show, when it takes away the episodic nature of the storyline (i.e. Minister of War plans something / Team Baek Dong Soo tries to thwart plan.) When the story flirts with "8 Days/Conspiracy in the Court" zealot tragedy, it just all sinks, because at the end of the day, we know that it's just glue for the next fight. The goofy histrionics make it more like a Taiwanese wuxia.
To me, WBDS is the best example of the "SBS Youth Sageuk." It's counterprogramming that is working.

Ohh, I have nothing against a little campy comic-book goodness and less than perfect camerawork, lulz, and yes, thankfully the show appears to be aware of its limitations and sticks very closely within its bounds. It's also very close to what I had imagined it to be once I learned it was based on a youth-directed manhwa.
But then sometimes it goes beyond my expectations and then I try and imagine it on a bigger platform and lament a little over what could have been. As a whole though, I love it for what it is. Even Lord Hong is a baadass mutha, the court intrigue never feels tedious as long as he's the one doing the plotting. Hee.
(Besides, I have to be honest, I have only completed about 5 sageuk to date... What expectations? Haha!)

I gotta say that I love the fact that there might be an extension in the pipeline. The story appeals to the Young (for the hotties) and Older (...erm for the hotties) and the relationship from all the main characters are worth continuing.
Most dramas tend to highlight all the action and intrigue until the second to last episode and then try and cram in too much or very little, leaving you with a bitter tasting ending.
I'm not sure who I think Dong Su should end up with (in regards to the ladies) as I think neither of them have that much passion in him as person (one loves his appearance, in my opinion and the other shows compassion to his nature because that's her nature/character) but I'm mosting interested in the confrontation he'll have with Yo Woon.. I really don't know who to root for...the Classic Compassionate Hero or the Deadly Smouldering Assassin.. Can't they just make up and be friends????

the reason why the royals seem so similar to Yi San is because (in theory) they are the same royals. However, WBDS not only takes liberties with history, it's really in an alternate universe.

The Crown Prince at the beginning of WBDS is Sado. Yi San shows up later. Just remember as you watch WBDS that it's a cartoon alternate universe, so you won't be bothered by little things like history or reality. LOL!
Seriously, it's a blast and a half. I enjoy the heck out of it, but I'm notoriously easy to please in the sageuk action department. As I said up thread, as long as Chun stays alive, fighting and badass, I'll be happy.

King Jeong-jo's era (Yi San) is a popular one for sageuks. The painter Kim Ho Dong (who shows up later in Warrior Baek Dong Soo) was the subject of Painter of the Wind. 2010's Sungkyunkwan Scandal (which covers the same death of the Crown Prince) is from this era. Finally, you have the Eight Days Mystery of Jeong Jo Assassination.
