The Musical gets picked up for broadcast, finally
by javabeans
The Musical, starring Gu Hye-sun (Boys Before Flowers) and Daniel Choi (Baby-Faced Beauty) is finally set for a fall broadcast, having been given a 10 pm timeslot on SBS for Friday nights. It’s an unusual hour for a prime-time miniseries, since those currently air on every day except for Friday, but it’s a bit better than the 11 pm slot previously proposed. At least 10 pm is familiar drama hour for viewers.
With that, the cast and crew (and patiently waiting fans) can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Phew! And it only took a year. (The drama began filming last summer, in July 2010, and was stuck waiting around for somebody to pick it up.)
A refresher on the story (since it’s been so long since the actual plot was the subject of interest, rather than the production circumstances): Gu Hye-sun plays Eun-bi, a medical student who dreams of being a musical actress. Daniel Choi plays Jae, a songwriter with Broadway roots. Both took actors themselves to music lessons for their roles, with Gu busying herself with singing and dance rehearsals and Daniel Choi taking to the piano.
In addition to the two stars, Park Ki-woong (Story of a Man) is a cold-blooded investor who only cares about money, while Ok Joo-hyun plays “musical queen” Kang-hee, which ought to be a perfect fit with her own singing and musical-theater background. Comedienne and variety entertainer Park Kyung-lim plays Eun-bi’s offbeat friend.
The 16-episode drama will premiere on September 2.

I wanna see Daniel Choi again. I wonder if he'll be dorky in this role. The only two roles I saw him in was Cyrano and BFB, and he was adorkable in both. I can't see him playing another persona but it'll be interesting if he does.

True.
She ruined Makino for me
:(
I dont know why she picked acting over modeling
but I'm curious because it says "musical actor"
Her vocal chops must be amazing?
IDK.

Didn't she start her career off as a singer?
JB included one of her songs in the music post a few days ago.

i know she's not tone deaf and she doesnt make my ears bleed
She can sing
but musical actors are amazing
I havent heard her sing a particularly challenging song
I dont expect her to be like Lee Haeri/Xiah Junsu but i hope i will be pleasantly surprised.

I think she was training to be a singer when she took up acting. I think she's got a nice enough voice, but needs a lot of training to hone it, so I'm curious to hear her.
As for acting, she was capable of good acting in previous dramas (i.e. sageuk The King and I). I think BOF is the exception. However, there were a ton of other messed up things abt the drama.

Very true. Despite all the eye candy BBF is just......
I like Gu Hye Sun. I think she is great in Pure Heart of 19 which btw is one of the greatest family dramas that I've ever seen (almost as good as Twinkle Twinkle).
If I'm not mistaken she sings one of the osts in that drama and it's not bad.

Makino herself was ruined since the second half of the original manga, when she turned from strong girl that didn't take shit home to girl totally controled by emotions and boys.

It is all subjective, isn't it? I love all her expressions in BOF- cute, shocked, sad, happy , weird, etc in BOF. And also in the King and I and Pure Heart 19. As to the character of Jandi , I can't say I like all aspects of the way it was written esp. the depressed and lifeless part, but it is life-and there are times when we are down and not likeable.

I heard Gu Hye Sun is to star in a drama called Fly Again where she will apparently be playing a wannabe airplane pilot. It'll be like Uee's case, being in two dramas airing approximately at the same time, although the aviator story is apparently set to air in December so they won't exactly clash. Of course, that also depends on whether this information is correct, which I can't really vouch for :P

I'm wondering that, too. Filming several episodes a year ago and then starting to film later episodes now, wouldn't the actors likely look slightly different? I don't know, fuller or thinner cheeks, etc?

It's so funny how Daniel Choi can pull off two different kinds of dorky looks with and without glasses!
Never was a fan of Gu Hye-sun but will check it out bc of Daniel Choi. And we can most likely get a chance to listen to Ok Joo-hyun's singing!

Another pre-produced drama that took a year for a timeslot? It's like Birdie Buddy. I feel like the 'pilot system' in the U.S. would be a nice, happy medium between 100% preproduction or live shooting. Is there a reason why this option is never on the table? :(

I hope Gu Hye Sun's acting has improved. She ruined Makino for me. I think she had the worst interpretation of the character out of all the versions out there. I've been wanting to re-watch BOF, but every time I try to do it her over-acting completely turns me off. I hope she does better in this upcoming drama. Or maybe she just tries to excel in too many things at the same time...jack of all trades, master of none.
