Stills from soon-to-premiere Can’t Lose
by javabeans
MBC’s Can’t Lose kicks off tomorrow, so we’ll finally be able to see what’s up with this bickering lawyer couple (Choi Ji-woo and Yoon Sang-hyun), why their marriage fell apart, and why they’ll have to get back together. Well, maybe not ALL of that will get shown tomorrow, but let’s hope he drama does a good job right out of the gate setting up their conflict and resolution.
In addition to the main couple, I look forward to seeing Kim Jung-tae (Miss Ripley) in the secondary cast; he’s had supporting roles in dozens of projects, but I know I’ll love him as Yoon Sang-hyun’s colleague and drinking buddy. In the stills below, he has a late-night drink and starts badmouthing his wife (Jo Mi-ryung). Does that mean we’ll get two couples working out their problems in comical parallels? I could dig that. The pictured scene reportedly led to a string of ad-libs, which doesn’t surprise me; the guy is hilarious on his feet (and a solid cook — who knew?).
To be honest, I have no idea whether Can’t Lose is going to be any good. The writer did 2006’s Great Inheritance and the PD did 2007’s Thank You, so my gut feeling is: Directing will be solid, writing is a question mark.
Another potential roadblock: Can’t Lose will be going up against Protect the Boss and The Princess’s Man, both of which are performing well. Added together, Boss and Princess total nearly 40% in the ratings, so there’s not a whole lot of room for Can’t Lose to squeeze in, especially since its predecessor (You’ve Fallen For Me) didn’t have high numbers to confer.
On the upside, Can’t Lose is based on a Japanese drama, Sasaki Fusai no Jingi Naki Tatakai (The Sasaki Couple’s Merciless Battle), which means that there’s a proven story there upon which to draw. I recall that the Korean adaptation of The Man Who Can’t Marry received some complaints for following the J-drama too closely, but repeating a story from the original is better than having no story at all — a fate sadly too common in K-drama rom-coms.
What I really do enjoy is that the bickering in this drama seems so sassy, which isn’t always the case. Choi Ji-woo looks bold and confident, exactly the type who can hold her own with an aggravating almost-ex-husband. After watching countless doormats suffer in silence and win their men anyway, I’m looking forward to watching an assertive woman who knows what she wants. *crosses fingers that the drama delivers*

The key is to have LOW expectations... Remember all that was going on before, for example, City Hunter... Most comments were: "wtf... "i dont know.."maybe it will be ok..." and that was good.

I like lawyer dramas when they're good so hopefully this will be fun but also believable when it comes to fighting in the court.
They look so cute together! I was a little taken aback by the casting at first but the stills are a nice surprise. I'm not checking out the other Wed/Thursday dramas so maybe this will provide me some entertainment.
(BTW are The Princess's Man and Protect the Boss any good? I haven't really talked to anyone who's been watching the two dramas so I have no idea whether to start from the beginning, start from the current eps, or just skip them)

Put aside Ji Sung's hair in PTB, the storyline is good. I love the way how the drama progressing so fast without leaving any plot behind. I'm not an avid fan of JJ, so yeah. I watch PTB with zero knowledge of the casts involved.
I better download The Princess' Man later. Many good reviews that I have read. :)

Protect the Boss is hilarious. I highly recommend it! Seriously, I don't remember the last time a drama made me laugh so much. Ji Sung is perfect.
I'm wondering about Princess's Man myself. I downloaded the episodes but haven't found the motivation/time to watch it. I've heard good things though.

Looking forward to it! I've been enjoying a lot of the more adult dramas (maybe because I'm in my 30s) although I really do love the silly and angst ridden high school and college age dramas as well. It's just nice to see more adult dramas.

I'm not in my 30s yet, but I'm definitely excited this drama is featuring older people! I feel like they deal with a wider range of obstacles beyond the "your family doesn't like me" and guys being mean to the heroine just because they can't handle their feelings angst.

I am nearing my 30's and just like you, even though I can watch and enjoy some of the silly teenage angst(it was Princess Hours the kdrama that fully drew me into this wonderful world!), I love all these "adult" dramas that have recently been around way better. Best Love, City Hunter, Myung Wol, Scent of a Woman, 49 Days...well you name it.
I fell in love with Yoon Sang Hyung after watching My Wife is a Superwoman and he seems to be very underrated!!! He's funny as hell and has a boyish charm like no other! Hopefully this will be the drama that will bring him to a bigger audience, and I am PRAAAAAYING it won't be as disappointing as Myung Wol(which is fairly ok but nowhere near as I would have expected.)

I'm not even in my 20s, but I totally agree. Lots of those "first love" stories are cute and all, but seriously, what are the chances that the first person you fall for is really going to be the one you stay with forever? I mean, sure, it happens, but not THAT often XD And then the conflict only exists because they won't talk to each other!!! Seriously, so many problems could just be avoided by being honest and sharing @_@~ Oh well, I'm excited for this one, they seem to have great chemistry!!! ^^

It will be extremely difficult, but not impossible for Can't Lose to pick up 15+ ratings. I consider the drama a success if it hits 2 digits, especially when it's up against 2 other dramas that add up to 40%!
In the beginning I was very hesitant about this drama, primarily due to the writer. Sorry to say but Great Inheritance was so boring beyond belief. I understand that these two actors exude great chemistry but chemistry can only go so far without witty script writing. However, after watching a few episodes I feel cautiously optimistic.
I enjoy law series such as The Practice, but as the drama is catered primarily to Korean and japanese audience, I think it's crucial that the drama maintains a good balance between romance/relationship issues and "law" technical stuff. Otherwise, this drama will go down very quickly.
MBC has done amazing job at promoting this drama. Why? they knew they are up against two strong contenders , so better put all their eggs in one basket. Can't live to Lose, right?

"It will be extremely difficult, but not impossible for Can’t Lose to pick up 15+ ratings"
Agreed. I've resigned to this show being ratings roadkill. It has a chance, since the "Queen of Housewives" demographic is not entirely covered by PTB's success. That is, if it gets great word of mouth from the onset.

I didn't realize it was modeled after Sasaki Fusai no Jingi Naki Tatakai! That's odd because I do not think it is a story that translates well into a kdrama. Also the couple doesn't break up completely until midway through the original drama (well at least a few episodes). So if this couple is already apart after episodes 1/2 then they are deviating quite a bit from the original.

I think that having CJW playing opposite Oska from SG is going to be a HUGE draw - I wouldn't be surprised at it pulling in some big rating numbers.
I've been watching PtB and Princess's Man. Clearly, PtB is the better of the two. Princess's Man is doing well simply because there wasn't much up against it - YFFM was clearly skewed towards a younger crowd while PM is perfect for the older viewer. Lovely costuming, simple story, no surprises, plus a pre-ordained ending of tragic proportions.
I'm looking forward to some really frothy and sharp dialogue from this whole Can't Lose cast - should be some impressive fun!

Same here, javabeans. I have all the reservations you have had.
But, I believe the primary defficiency after viewing 4 trailers is YSH's ability to potray an elite lawyer.
He does not seem to be able to carry the professional demeanor very well, and found him lack the stature and disposition of a skilled practitioner of law, left alone a man who commands much respect for himself and his wife!! He simply looks like a yes man to his wife!!
I still think he is at best to potray someone who has inferior perplex, low self-esteem or even a mommy boy!!
Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that the drama does not turn out to be a case of backstreet boy trying to court/divorce and an uptown girl. That will defeat the purpose of the much anticipation to witness as to how a legal couple going through a divorce proceeding with grace and humor.
In the case of CJW, I found her too aggressive, domineering and a controlling wife who lacks tender loving care (both physical and emotional) towards her husband. I wonder who would in real life marry such a woman?
Moreover, she seems like a rubbish bin. Hence, must be stingky, messy and dirty. I wonder how her husband can find solace in her, left alone kissing her? Wonder whether she did brush her teeth? Hehe....^_____________^
She should pose a more assertive front like the tigress in Kung Fu Panda who meow, rather than a mere tigress trying to roar!!
It may be too early to say, but I like to speculate that romcom may not be her forte. I believe, she is best to left potraying the funny side of herself naturally, rather than trying to put on funny acts, that looks kind of slapsticks and cheap!!
Finally, it looks like it is a low budget drama. You can tell from the press conference venue, set-up and how and where they shoot the drama.
Just hope the drama is cheap, but going to be good and hillariously fresh!!

Impossible!! If all three are at 20% each, it means Korean household is split to three herds. Human, or more so Korean who comes from a collective culture tends to move with herd instincts.
I think around 11% to 13% is more likely for Can't Lose!! PTB and PM will thus fall to about 15%. In other words, it will garner some viewership from KBS and SBS.
CJW's 101 Proposal where she filmed in China, a duplicate of Japanese version was a flop.

49 days writer is a different person. This writer portray EJ character to be too fake. She puts up multiple facade.
A bully to her husband
An obedient daughter-in-law
A calculative boss
A complainant and dirty laundry washer in public
An unfilial daughter
Yet to access her relationship with clients and her peers and judges.
From what I see, she is pretty messy inside her brain and has split personalities. Basically, a very manipulative and petty character, which I do not like!!!

Here is a more closer look of character of the male and female lead. My earlier posting was more of my raw emotional reaction of a fan. Below is from an observer view:
The tempo from how they met, married and leading a family life is good-succinct, short and concise. The baseball scene was creative, cute and memorable.
Neverthelss, the shaping of the character of the female lead seems dubious and kind of inconsistent on a multiple level.. She appears to be a person who has split personalities and very good at putting up multiple facade. In other words, she is pretty fake and manipulative. She is not an authentic individual.
A husband bully at one hand, but an obedient daughter-in-law on the other hand. A stern and calculative boss to her staff, but generous in her drinking habit. A complainant who rather washes her dirty linen in public (confine to a bar tender), than having a more amicable relationship with her own mother.
Her relationship with clients, her peers and superior (judges) are yet to be established. Deep down, she looks like a pretty confuse individual. Her internal conflicts projected through externally. Most notably on how she handles her personal hygene and keeping her house clean and tidy. She appears to be a person who can only find order in disorder. Her motivation in life is money and status!! She seems to have little idea of jurisprudence and lack of righteousness, hence it will be interesting to see her legal reasoning in court.
In the case of the male lead, it is too good a husband to be true. He is more of a social worker than an elite lawyer. Why becoming a partner in a law firm, if his interest is to serve the public? He is an equally confused individual. He will be better off working for the Korea Legal Aid Center for Family Relation. In that case, he is at least paid by the government, rather than his wife!! It will be fun to see how he is going to argue his cases in court, with his renumeration being couple of potatos. You pay peanuts, you got monkey. You pay potatos, you got emmm...what? ^_____________^
