Park Min-young: Over her slump and keeping busy

This interview came out before the big news that Park Min-young was in fact dating her City Hunter co-star Lee Min-ho, but maybe that’s a good thing; anything published after that is bound to be overshadowed by questions of her relationship.

But since that romance IS bound to attract the most interest, let’s get some of those details out of the way first. As noted when the news was first confirmed, the two actors had known each other before working together on City Hunter, although they hadn’t been that close until this project. They shot a CF together before either was well-known, and a few years later she was the lead in the 2007 high school drama I Am Sam. Lee played one of the supporting characters as one of her schoolmates.

A thwarted potential connection: Park was in the 2006-07 family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick with Lee Min-ho’s best friend Jung Il-woo, and Lee was set to guest on the show until he was in a severe car accident that put him in the hospital.

(Funny that Jung Il-woo’s character was so dismissive of Park Min-young’s — she was his hyung’s ditzy girlfriend — which gives me the totally manufactured impression that he’d be disdainful of her as Min-ho’s girlfriend, ha. That’s what happens when you cross real-world knowledge with drama happenings.)

In recent interviews that came out prior to the relationship announcement, both Park and Lee spoke favorably about each other, though they kept their dating under wraps. Apparently, things were awkward at the outset of shooting City Hunter; Park explained their first meeting in 2005, when they were paired for a pizza CF. “But when we’d run into each other, we’d just exchange greetings. When we first met for City Hunter, it was almost like we didn’t know each other. [Laughs] But after spending time together on the set, we became closer and I found that he’s a really good, hard-working actor I can learn a lot from.”

Park said, “When acting, the other person has to listen in order for my emotions to come out of the scene. In that aspect, I think I matched with Lee Min-ho the best. Maybe it’s because he’s so nice by nature that he’s even better when he’s reacting than in his own scenes. He’s so good at that that the director told him to do as well when it’s his scene. Our acting styles are similar.”

Asked about her ideal style, she said, “I think the best kind of man is one who values me, understands me, and is accepting. Someone who’s easy-going, who embraces and understands me rather than leading me.”

Lee Min-ho had similar things to say, which he expressed in a different interview: “I’ve known Park Min-young for a long time, but we weren’t close. But doing this drama, I found that she’s such a good person, more than I’d thought previously. Rather than insisting on doing things her way, she matches herself to her fellow actors and is someone I can learn from. Thanks to her, we were able to work comfortably together.”

He added, “To grow as an actor, whether you’re a man or woman, I think you have to meet [and date] a lot of people. In the past three years I haven’t had that kind of relationship, but if I fall in love, I think I’d pour all my energy into that love. But I’d keep the relationship a secret. I wouldn’t date someone while thinking of breaking up, but I’m still young so if we were to break up, it would hurt both of us and that wouldn’t be good for whoever came along next, either.”

Asked which of the love scenes from City Hunter she found most memorable, Park answered, “What stays in my memory the most is the scene in the bus where Yoon-sung leans on him. It’s something I’ve wanted to do, and it stays with me because I really wanted to experience it, plus the scene was full of a freshness that made it quite beautiful.”

The interviewer pointed out, “Nana chooses Yoon-sung over her work as a bodyguard. In real life, if you were forced to make that kind of extreme choice, what would you choose?”

Park replied, “I’d think really hard on what was really important to me in that situation. I might be so in love I feel like dying, like it would drive me crazy, or I might not. The decision could change depending on the stage of the relationship, or the type of situation. But I think I’d try to find some middle ground.”

Asked about her chemistry and working relationship with Lee Min-ho, she answered, “Lee Min-ho has a very distinct personality. He’s dignified and serious, and when he’s acting he takes it very seriously. That was a different Lee Min-ho than the one I knew. Before doing this drama, I actually wondered if we’d be a good fit because he’s younger than I am, and still felt like a youth, but I don’t think we could have suited each other better. I thought, ‘I should meet someone like this next time, too.’ In this drama, I met a lot of good colleagues, dongsengs, and really good people.”

City Hunter had a number of physical shoots, and the egg-throwing scene (where Nana gets pelted with garbage while defending Da-hae) was one that was challenging. She explained that the weather was exceptionally hot that day, and she was dressed in her bodyguard’s black suit while being hit with eggs, tomatoes, and flour, and it was unpleasant. Apparently the staff called her “Nana Pancake” that day, thanks to the ingredients involved.

Now with City Hunter behind her, Park is turning her attention to her next project. She’s been busy ever since the last drama wrapped, and on a recent trip to Hawaii for a photo shoot, she had no time to sightsee — in fact, all she did aside from the work was sleep in her hotel room. She owes her busy schedule to the fact that she’s already chosen her next drama, Man of Honor, and brought along the script for some reading.

Asked whether she has any time off before the new drama, she smiled and answered, “I always have something on my schedule. But after I wrap this up, I have about two weeks before I have to begin my new project. I don’t know what I’m doing on my break yet. But I’ll probably be working on the concept for the next drama and spending that time preparing.”

The drama co-stars Chun Jung-myung and comes from the PD and writer combo of mega-hit Baker King Kim Tak-gu; in fact, some are calling this a “Female Kim Tak-gu.” (If the title seems in conflict with that concept, it’ll help to know that the Korean words are actually a pun on the two leads’ names, and can also mean Young-kwang’s Jae-in — where the hero is Young-kwang and the heroine is Jae-in.)

Park describes her new character thusly: “Jae-in is three times brighter than Nana. Of course, merely being bright is uninteresting. Her emotional line goes from one end to the other, and is really exciting.” Thinking that her normal vocal tone is a bit low (and less traditionally feminie) and therefore doesn’t suit the character, Park is working to raise her tone to play Jae-in, which she also did for Unstoppable High Kick.

“I told myself that I should have an easy next project, but when I read the synopsis and script for Man of Honor, it was so entertaining that I ended up taking it. I usually prefer when the script is more interesting than the synopsis. It was so interesting that I thought I’d regret it if I didn’t do it. Then I met the scriptwriter and director, and they totally understood the tone of my acting and my voice. I felt I could trust them.”

Regarding her schedule, Park said, “I’m thankful for it. I have a simple personality, so with work that’s really fun, I work really hard and with things I don’t want to do, I really don’t do. I like acting, so if I like a character I immerse myself fully into her, and I think people look favorably on that. I feel like that translates to the screen. And I also think I’ve been fortunate.”

Her willingness to keep occupied is understandable, since she has talked in the past about the difficulty of facing a slump post-High Kick (which Jung Il-woo has also talked about). She shot to overnight fame, was the talk of the town, and then the show ended and she found herself with a lot of empty time on her hands. “Maybe it’s because I’ve experienced a slump before, but I don’t get easily excited by favorable reviews. I’m really thankful that there are people with favorable opinions, but I know that I could at any moment come up against a brick wall and hit another slump. So while I’m truly grateful for it, on the other hand I feel that I need to travel my path steadily. I’m thankful whenever I hear praise, but I know how many talented people there are out there with both star potential and acting skills, and those who haven’t yet gotten recognition. I feel I have to work even harder.”

Her slump seems to have left her with a lot of valuable thoughts, and she said, “There was a time when I didn’t know much about acting and just did it for the fun of it. But as I was doing the drama Ja Myung Go, I started learning about acting, but just around then it ended. While waiting for a project I wanted to do, a year or two went by. I was incredibly eager to work then — even now, when I’m facing tough times or feeling tired, I think back to how I felt then and get a grip on my feelings. No matter how tired or how little I’ve slept, I think back to that time and my eyes pop open. I think, ‘Back then, I wanted to work but couldn’t. Now they want me to work, so what’s so difficult?'”

Man of Honor is planned for an October premiere on KBS, which means it’ll be starting shoots soon, keeping Park busy for the rest of the year. That, and dating Lee Min-ho, of course. No matter how hard-working, one must always carve out time for that.

their relationship doesn't depend on our wishes, but on their love, their willing to go on against hardships
1 antifans
2 they are both busy ppl
3 how will resist Lee Min Ho to see her in Chun Jung-myung's arms or the next leading man
4 agencies
5 miscellaneous coz none of them is at marriage age for Korean culture

fanfiction ahead: I'd like to believe that their relationship was a bit older - why?Kim Bum - Lee Min Ho's buddy - is in her agency -however the only ppl that know the truth are the 2 of them

I actually don't find Chun Jung-myung appealing... idk, in CS I liked him but his acting made me feel he was kind of... sleazy.

Required fields are marked *

I thought his CS character was kind of sleazy ... I didn't see too much of CS but I saw him in Goodbye Solo and What's up fox? and didn't look this way.

I think it is a matter of taste when we like certain actors
while LMH or CJM lets me cold.... I'm going crazy obsessed by people like No Min Woo or Kim Nam Gil both with different acting styles and different looks = one looks prettier than a woman the other one is a manly ahjussi ( KNG is young but he has that aura of wise man even though he didn't like the school too much, while NMW is more on the geek side even he doesn't look like it- he is pretty fluent in Japanese and has a good English grammar - even though he must work on English pronunciation )

another simple explanation: each actor/actress express feelings on our screen - but those feelings can enter our soul or not - we weight this by telling that X person is a good actor/ess or they measure this by ratings and money - the bigger is the fandom, the bigger will be the support for the actor/ess = math is simple

Personally I will watch Man of Honor because PMY and Lee Jang-woo are in it .

A high profile relationship with their busy schedules will be hard to maintain. Good luck to them.

"To grow as an actor, whether you’re a man or woman, I think you have to meet [and date] a lot of people." I have to disagree. Yes , one should have lots of life experiences to grow as a person but not necessary many love relationships. One example is Cha Seoung-won- he married young and he is a great actor.

I agree with Lee Min Ho - dating differs from person to person - what I felt for one guy doesn't repeat when I date another guy and each time the things that happens during the relationship differs therefore different feelings

love isn't the thing you imagine it could be in a way or another- love is something you experience and feel and he must express it on screen

I don't agree with the Korean culture or my culture where ppl ask for a woman to be in the same time virgin and fertile - it is kinda antithetic -the white dress is overrated - even though personally I did it

I am not saying one should be a virgin until marriage. Most of us have to kiss a few frogs before we find our Prince Charming. The point I am saying is you do not have to date a lot of people to grow as an actor, as there are a lot of great actors who had dated only a few people or married young. How each of us use each experience is more important. It is the quality ,not quantity that counts.

"most of us" LMH or Park Min Young aren't most of us
actors are super-sensitive beings -what makes them or breaks them are their feelings and the way they express them on screen

however how much is too much? for Koreans especially for guys like LMH one girl is already too much - see the antifans - for other ppl coffee and beer with another guy for each day of the week is just another boring week and they call that dating

for me?I go out with guys since 16, but how serious is a 5 months rel at 19? - I kissed tons of frogs before Mr Right - however I got a clueless Mr Right- how come? he never dated before and now, after 9 years, he is doing social mistakes on me - even it was only one but he's still clueless - however I get my things straight when I remember what kind of guys I could get instead of Mr Almost Perfect

when I read your reply last night I thought - she doesn't get it - but in the morning, after reading the replies below, I think you understand me better than other ppl do- I didn't replied coz Mr Leona wanted to sleep

for every person understanding love is different from person to person, but I believe in searching Mr/s Right until one finds him/her, even so the divorce rate is pretty high - because ppl don't differentiate between lust and love, between we love each other and their rel doesn't work no matter how much they try, even so they get married make children and after that they have the epiphany that they aren't suited for each other and so on

this virgin talk is interesting lol ..
I always believe that one get what he believes..
you think that you will find the mr right after dating many or few guys than that what you will get.

I believe that I'm one man's everything then that what I will get..

you may say what is she talking about?
but that is how I'm raised and what I believe is right.
also this is why I love Korean Culture, there is so much similarity between us and I wish Lee and Park will last.

could you develop please? I don't think I get it- somehow I think you never heard about something called divorce rate

How do you find Mr Right? he is a given? or you found him by yourself? Each of us lives in different parts of the world and it is easy to see that Arabians,West Europeans or Eastern Europeans, North Americans or South Americans and Asians have different manners when it comes about this subject

or maybe i'm just putting my own spin on things...

this isn't the only get-together- last year was an article on hancinema about J club - senior A listers with J in their names who are very good friends - one of them is Jang Dong Gun and his wifey - Jung Joon Ho is married now with an announcer but in my knowledge the other guys aren't married yet

Lee Min Ho's club - they live and breathe acting, they are the same age ( none of them is 40 in my knowledge - maybe the Scheduler tricked us ) so nothing wrong until now

in this line of work is hard to maintain friendships - because rivalry isn't only between guys or between girls to get a role, but even between a woman and a man too- why? money ! if one is invited in a show then this is on the expense of the other one .
Here is the example:
Hamasaki Ayumi( a woman) was replaced by TVXQ(2 guys) in the ending of A-nation. For the past 8 years she closed this show, even more this year she closed 5/7, but in Tokyo the guys did it

I gave this example because it is placed in the entertainment world. Each of us is replaceable at work, but entertainers know this on their own skin on daily basis

when i watched SKKS, i disliked her so much. dont know exactly why. her acting was not good, yes, but i dont think that alone could cause such hatred in me. i was so upset when CH, a drama i had been anticipating for a long time casted her. but because in no way i can ignore watching LMH (he was the reason of my anticipation after all), i watched that drama anyway. and boy, did i love the drama so much i even adore the couple. eventhough admittedly i still feel indifferent about PMY as an actress. but i used to really hate her, so that was already an improvement.

hearing about their dating news, knowing fairly well how much LMH wants to date, i am happy (albeit half sad since LMH is off the market!) for him. regardless the lucky girl is Park Min Young who i am still not a fan as an actress. why? because whatever makes LMH happy, i should be happy as well, if i want to call myself a fan. thats what i told myself

therefore, i say, dont mind the so called fans who now turn their backs on you because from what i see they were never your fan to begin with. they couldnt watch you act alongside other actresses than GHS. when i argued with some of them on that matter, they said supporting has different ways. what other ways to support an actor if not by watching their work? they said, supporting his cfs, going to his fanmeeting etc etc. and now, with this dating news, they announced themselves not his fan anymore/not really his fan to begin with but actually a GHS fan more. ha! sorry for venting this out here. but seriously, LMH doesnt this kind of fan. i hope LMH stays with PMY for a long time and gains true fans along the way. ones who value his acting more than his personal live or his Hotness.

all the best to LMH and PMY!

I find this whole fan/anti-fan & support/not support business amazing. People have time and energy for such passions?

That said, I've never been much impressed by PMY as an actress. However, she seems a better person than an actress, at least at this stage.

LMH, on the other hand, I've always found very compelling as an actor and a bit of a dud as a person. I remember reading an interview of Patrick Stewart, whom I loved loved loved as an actor, only to be sorely disappointed that he as a person was so uninteresting.

Good luck to the two of them, both romantically and professionally.

a bit of a dud as a person - I thought I'm the only one

complementary personalities or opposite attract? only time will tell

I got to know LMH after Kim Nam Gil and I was amazed by the difference in their personalities

however sometimes actors depend on their agencies and the releases to the press - so if their agencies stick their nose it can make or break the public's perception about their actor

Taking PR agencies' manipulation into effect, there's still the projected persona. And LMH's is a dud. He seems nice and sweet, but not all that interesting. Definitely young. His friend Jung Il Woo, definitely not a dud. Yoo Ah In, self-absorbed and petulant.

So, definitely an evaluation of their personas since it's impossible to know the person.

I wasn't impressed with PMY's acting in High-kick, skks or CH to be perfectly honest, each time I felt like I could see what her character could be (which is awesome in both skks and ch) but her portrayal always fell a bit flat and never quite nailed it. On the other hand, I adore her in the easy, down to earth vibe that she exudes.

I'm a LMH fan for sure, he's prettiness makes me giggle like no other but I do love the fact he's dating PMY because they are adorable together. As long as we still get shots of nekkid LMH, I really don't care who he dates^^

Was it a competing network, or something?

Still not sure about PIE with her. They are both so nice and earnest and kind and loyal. I don't see how they are going to spark. You need flint and steel, right? Neither of them are flinty. We have steel and steel.

I initially thought that Park Min Young is lucky to have Lee Min Ho.. But after reading this and other interviews with her, I think Lee Min Ho is luckier to have a girl like Park Min Young. She's only 25 but she talks with so much sense.

In the other interview she rated her acting skill only 40-50% as she believes she still have a lot of things to learn. And will work harder in her new project. With this kind of attitude I know she can go a long long way. Gudluck PMY.

I like the City Hunter movie because I want to see Miss Park Min Young all the time.

I admire her beauty.
