Jung Il-woo’s new drama Flower Boy Ramyun Shop
by javabeans
From pretty-boy masked heroes to pretty-boy Schedulers to pretty-boy… ramyun purveyors? The poster boy for the “kkot-minam” (flower boy) generation, Jung Il-woo, has signed on to a new drama called Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, which will air on tvN following Birdie Buddy.
Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (a working title) is the first drama in tvN’s planned “Oh Boy” series, which plays with the trendy drama format and features a star-studded lineup of flower boy leading men. The strategy is to make a direct play for the young market, and create an Oh Boy brand that opens the door for other related products and enterprises.
The Oh Boy series includes a reality/audition program, with the intention of being a long-running brand. Oh Boy Audition plans to premiere in October with seven episodes, scoping out the new generation of pretty boy leading men. The winner of that series wins a role in the second drama in the Oh Boy series, Flower Boy Attack Band.
Then at the end of October, Flower Boy Ramyun Boy will premiere, broadcasting on Mondays and Tuesdays. Jung Il-woo will play Cha Chi-soo, a conceited chado-nam (cold city man) from a wealthy family. He’s confident and chic, but also has a hidden pure side underneath it all. Aw, he’s a teddy bear hiding in asshole’s clothing. He’s the son to the country’s biggest food product conglomerate (think Nongshim, or Lotte).
Chi-soo’s also used to making women’s hearts flutter, but it’s a noona (6 years his senior), Eun-bi, who grabs his attention — and with her character described as an easygoing physical education teacher-in-training, I’m gonna guess she’s far from his usual type. (Aw, now I want to see him re-team with Yoon Eun-hye, though I won’t hold my breath for that pairing. But she’d fit the description so well. I’d be happy with Lee Yoon-ji or Nam Sang-mi, though, although those are also pipe dreams.)
I’m going to love seeing Jung Il-woo as the lead in a romantic comedy. Despite his pretty-boy status, this is actually a first for him, playing the leading rom-com man. His most known roles have been as a scene-stealing teenager in Unstoppable High Kick, righteous hero in Return of Iljimae, and the crankypants Scheduler of 49 Days. Jung’s last rom-com was 2009’s My Fair Lady, but even putting aside how awful that show was, he was just a second lead there. He did have a romantic loveline in the 2007 movie My Love, but he was only one of many characters in that omnibus project.
Man, is tvN on a roll or what? They really aren’t kidding about making a substantial foray into the prime-time drama market. And with their newfound dedication to bringing us a whole slew of pretty manboys to flood their dramas, I am ALL for it.

Yes he is indeed goodlooking...
When I first read the title of the drama ...
The first thing that comes in my mind is... " Is this Coffee Prince's First Shop...The Ramyun Version?"
I really hope that it is ... :)

Oh YAY! Thanks for the fabulous news! I didn't think we'd get to see him in another drama so soon <3 <3 <3
And yeah Yoon Eun-hye would be perfect although it's highly doubtful considering she wrapped up her drama not long ago and usually goes off screen for a year or two. Nam Sang-mi though, she's free isn't she? It's been a while since she was in a drama, so there's a chance! :D
Who else... Shin Min Ah?

Heh, food conglomerate son? Ramyun? I eat Nongshim Kimchi Ramyun sometimes once a week or a couple times a month. I have a pretty boy to look at, delicious dehydrated noodles to eat, what more can I ask for? Do I dare hope for awesome chemistry and a decent plot? I shouldn't be greedy...
Nice marketing tactic TvN. You already have a line-up of viewers. Though, I'm not sure if we count since many of us will be streaming it online with subtitles.

I love the idea of tvN and cable channels trying to break into the market with dramas to rival the big three: SBS, KBS, MBC. It'd be nice for us so we get many more drama options. It would also be nice for actors and actresses looking for jobs/projects, as well as those folks that work behind the camera that need work - at least I hope so. Hey, I'm looking for a scenario where everyone wins.
Jung Il-woo plus a line up of pretty boys? Winning. Jung Il-woo plus Yoon Eun-hye? Beyond winning. Make it happen tvN. Make it happen. XD

I don't even care about the brand they're trying to build, I'm just ecstatic that JIW is FINALLY getting a lead role. Even if it is on cable. I will watch this even if it stinks so bad you could smell it from the moon.

A whole series of trendy dramas featuring a star-studded lineup of flower boy leading men, starting with JIW: Oh, boy!!! Apart from Manny, I've been impressed with the quality of the tvN dramas I've seen so far. Suck on that, KBS.

I wish tvN would make more breezy dramas like I Need Romance.
Jung Il-wood's drama sounds like the typical trendy drama that would air on one of the regular broadcasting stations. :/ Prickly rich guy, bright easy-going female lead. I'm sure they'll hate each other at first site too. How...dull.

So, it's going to be a series of dramas that tie together with an overarching theme? Sort of like a webseries or something, but TV-version? haha. LXD comes to mind. :D
Sounds really interesting. Cable networks have more of an option to play around in comparison to the BIG three so the premise sounds kind of innovative and fun.
Sort of like the drama series that run once in awhile; I remember a lot of Taiwanese dramas trying this format out. I dont know how successful they were but all of the episodes were fun to watch.

ooh, sounds cute. "Oh Boy" series...tvn sure is smart and i'm not complaining at all.
plot seems a little used but with the right actors, story, and tone, this drama could be fantastic.
Lee Yoonji and Nam Sang Mi as possible female costars would be awesome. LYJ hasn't been a lead in a trendy romcom before, but she definitely has the acting chops to do so. and NSM hasn't been on anything in forever, so any project with her is highly anticipated on my part.
looking forward to it!

A pairing with Lee Yoon Ji would be great. The combined pretty between the two would be beyond awesome. She can show some dance moves or even just stretch in front of the camera. I think she can hold her own pretty against Jung Il Woo.

Huzzah for return of the Scheduler-heartbreaker!
I'm also rooting for tvN to have some blockbusters and stick around. With new competition this could mean some changes on the directing/writing scene as well. I'm especially hoping for that on the writing scene since too many dramas have the same ol' feeling or Candy heroines that drive me batty lately without trying to fuss with the mold. Not asking for some breaking (while it would be amazing, also realizing that won't happen anytime soon) of the mold, just to have them feel fresh again.

WOOHOO looking forward to seeing him in a romcom; hopefully it'll be better then MFL but given how pathetic that was, it can't be very hard to better it. Was also hoping for a reunion with YEH so I can see all the lovey dovey scenes missed in MFL but alas. Pity they're doing the noona thing again too. Bit sick of it now after The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry and a few other kdramas doing the older woman / younger man thing, but heck, i'll watch just for JIW. <3
