All That Glitters gets an extension
by javabeans
MBC weekend drama All That Glitters (aka Twinkle Twinkle), starring Kim Hyun-joo and Kim Seok-hoon, has gotten a four-episode extension, which puts its total episode count at 54.
It can thank its strong viewership ratings for the extension, since it’s been pulling in numbers the 20% range, making it first in its timeslot. Competitors are the sageuk drama King Gwanggaeto (starring Kim Seung-soo and Lee Tae-gon), which has been performing in the mid-teen range, and My Love By My Side (Lee So-yeon, Lee Jae-yoon), whose ratings are in the 9%-10% range.
All That Glitters still has a number of weeks to go, so I think the extension has enough time to be worked into the existing storylines. Plus, there’s a good chance MBC was eyeing the extension card well in advance, once they were assured of the drama’s strong ratings. That’s good news for fans, and perhaps also for its successor drama, which gets an extra two weeks to prepare. (Maybe they don’t need it, but I always think extra planning time is a good thing, given the beast that is the live-shoot production system.)
That follow-up drama is A Thousand Kisses, which has a familiar-sounding premise (rebirth of the divorced woman), but an enjoyable cast to heighten its appeal: Ryu Jin, Seo Young-hee, Kim So-eun, Ji Hyun-woo. A Thousand Kisses now premieres on August 20.

Isn't this drama being directed by the PD who did "Soulmate"? I wonder if it's as good as "Soulmate". Anyone enjoying this?

I was enjoying this episode, until it took a nosedive into the world of makjang the last few weeks, most definitely the result of the writer trying to make enough room for the possible extension. (The same length of time that the extension rumor has been floating around.) Alas, this extension will do more harm than good, but now I'm too invested in the characters to give up. Sigh.

I have no idea why people are surprised at the makjang elements in this show. It's obvious that's where it was going, and it's been makjang-ish for a while.

I LOVE it! I love the female lead on the first sight. I LOVE the male lead as the story progresses. And I HATE the second female lead on the first sight.
I don't really like the long drama but personally I think All that Glitters/Sparkling/Twinkle Twinkle is the best long drama that I ever seen in a long time (since Pure Heart of 19)
The story for the lead couple is the best ever written. I love them both so much. Sometimes I only love the male lead and think the female lead is not good enough for him (e.g. Mr. Goodbye). Sometimes I only love the female lead and wonder why do they pair her with such a dissappointing male lead. But the OTP in All That Glitters are so wonderful and awesome!
Love them! Thanks God for the extension for I couldn't bear the thought of not seeing them anymore.
The key to watch this one, fast forward whenever the second female lead is on screen!

I was disappointing with this drama they exploit episodes and sometimes is missed up the direction of the story line.I can't imagine why they have to make so many episode? I mean 20 or 30 episode that should be enough to follow the story.I love Korean drama, but if I see to many episodes no matter how good it is that wont do any good because you'll see the cliche on it.....Right now I am watching my love by my side and I hope this drama will end soon I'm on episode 22 My advice to all the producers don't make it a long stories leave it with at lest something for us think with happy ending,

I'm enjoying this drama... evil sister vs the good sister! The story is well written and the actors are superb. My only complaint is having to wait for subs as there is alot of dialogue in the story line, which makes it difficult to watch RAW for non korean speakers like me.

And pleeeease give us more sweet OTP moments. That's what have us fans hooked to this show, its amazing OTP.

I like this drama. Kim goon ju is soo good here. But it's hard to watch raw and can't find recaps anywhere. I guess dramabeans does not do recaps for long series like this. The evil sister here is so evil that she looks miserable to
Me even when she's happy..
Thanks for the article , eventually they will complete the subs.

I read in soompi that the actors are not happy with the extension. Can you imagine if they decided to tack on a couple extra weeks of school after exams?
They are exhausted!
I am enjoying it, and do agree that the extension has caused a dip in the quality of the plot. Too bad because it really was a GREAT show for a long time.
It is fun to see Ahjussi from City Hunter play dual roles - a clownish brother in law in TT. He is not handsome but he is very endearing.

This is an extension I'm actually really happy about. All That Glitters (or Sparkling as I call it) is very well written and the main leads are fantastic. I'm so invested in the characters that I don't think I'd mind if they extended it for 50 more episodes. The way this drama dealt with and challenged the very definition of family and identity was, in my opinion, very well handled. I also really liked how the main female character was established as a strong, assertive, and independent woman; she didn't make her boyfriend the centre of her life, she even told her respective boyfriend's mother that she wouldn't leave her job and career to devote herself entirely to looking after her boyfriend. You don't see a lot of that in Kdramas so it was nice to see that change for once.

Thanks for sharing the good news! I love the way the characters are developed in this drama and think they have a lot of story left for expansion. Only watch with subs, so I'm way back on 36, but haven't noticed the dip in conflict yet.
Thanks to the depth of the characters there are nice surprises tucked in between the typical kdrama stuff. The protagonist is such a strong woman, and even in the face of crisis, her perspective on situations usually catches me off guard. The editor in chief is evolving, and I always enjoy seeing his discomfort as he is moved to act a different way because of his love. That makes his efforts even more special.
I agree that seeing the brother in law in City Hunter and then here is hilarious, especially when I watch both shows right in a row. Such a great supporting actor where ever he shows up!

I enjoyed this drama in the beginning. There are two cliche story lines that I am partial to: the main character losing his/her memory and the switch at birth of a poor family and a rich family.
This drama was interesting to watch in the beginning as we saw the rich mom starting to favor her real daughter and turning away from the daughter she raised. And maybe I'm sadistic, but the drama was also more enjoyable to me when the evil female lead was acting despicably. But the problem was, she was such a good actress that I ended up empathizing with her. That doesn't make much for a satisfying resolution when all her evil deeds are revealed and she gets her just desserts.
I have only watched up to episodes in the 30 range, so I'm not up to date on what's happening right now, but from the way things are developing, I can tell that the two girls will eventually become as close as real sisters and there will be peace and happiness between the two families. Which I suppose will be satisfying in its own way. Family dramas tend to go this route, as opposed to prime time dramas. One thing that bothers me, as others have noted, is the makjang nosedive. The mother of Kim Sukhoon is a cruel, heartless, mafia matriarch/loan shark queen??!! ****??!! I'm ambivalent about the extension since I'm not that invested in this drama. If only the dramas that I loved got extensions!!!! but no, life isn't that perfect~~

I can see that the two sisters are probably going to get close because Han Jun Won is too wonderful and kind hearted I just know she'll forgive the evil one.
The rare scenes when they are together and Hwang Geum Ran aren't plotting or bursting with jelousy e.g. both girls sleeping together and when they are in the police station are sweet enough. But I'm not that happy about a happy ending for the evil one. She needs to pay for all her evilness.
As for makjang element, I don't really mind. I'm on ep 36 and haven't seen the makjang element that will ruin the story.
And there's something about the mother that makes me hope that in the end she'll realise what a jewel Han Jung Won really is and how she could turn her 'bloody fortune' that has become the wall between her and her son into a bridge that bring her son back to her by turning all that money into a greater good for the masses/community.

This is fantastic news! I haven't gotten to the makjang section yet (and I fear it, how I do), but I'm so pleased with the show overall that I have faith in Show's ability to work over the long haul. Like..."Yes, we've veered off into Crazy Town, but we promise this long-cut on the road to a Fantastic Drama is for more than the scenery." Or something like that.

I wish it wasn't extended since the plot has been skewing makjang, but the OTP is great. I never realized that Kim Suk-hoon was such an endearing and handsome actor, and I love his Song Seung-joon! Kim Hyun-joo is absolutely lovely as Han Jung-won, and they make a cute couple. I guess I'll look at the bright side of the news and be happy that at least I get to see this lovely pair together more rather than worry about the excessive plot twists and turns.

If it wasn't for the father that raised JW I would never continue with this drama. There something in Korea Culture I don't even try to understand and have no respect for. The rich mother attitude toward the daughter she raised for 28 years, not 2 not 8 but 28, was just too much. As a mother I would never understand her reason to act the way she did toward a girl she raised. The “poor” mother is a person I could relate to, when she sat at the lunch table and told the rich mother they can just leave it the way it is because GR is her daughter in the most important way heart and soul, I think I cried a river, and then come the ocean. When GR didn’t grab her mother hand when she say they are leaving telling this woman that you not going, you want to stay with your real mother was one of the most heart wrenching scene I have watch in k-drama. That scene alone made me stay because I was shock to witness such reasonableness. She didn’t give a crap about bloodline, she only knew that GR was her daughter in her heart, and soul and JW sitting across from her is a stranger. Of course through out the drama it become the typical submissive k-drama but in the area where it counted it shown insight, depth, realism that allow me to have respect for the storyline instead of my small voices telling me out of respect for other counties cultures be nice. I know after my rant it might seem like I don’t like the drama but I do, it well written with good acting.

Yes, I love the father too. He's so wonderfully awesome. While the mother.....I think she deserves to have those two real children of hers. But I feel so sorry for the father.
And the samchun (uncle) I love him too. He's the most adorable samchun in Kdrama land. The father and the little brother are just awesome.

I've been loving this series. I catch episodes on epdrama.com because I don't know a lot of the sites yet for kdramas (I'm new to the whole kdrama genre since I didn't discover them until Feb '11 but have watched over 20 so far). I just wish that the subs came faster but I'm pretty patient and been skimming the RAW videos just to see where they are heading.

Welcome to the club, Andrea! Just in case you don't know, the subs for this drama are unusually slow because neither Viki nor Darksmurf (two of the most active subbing sites) have a team working on this one. Another site you might try is Kimchidrama-- I like it because it has a very simple interface. You might also want to check out the thread for this drama on Soompi-- I avoid Soompi because I don't want to read any spoilers, but since you're already watching the RAWs, that wouldn't be an issue for you. I gather that some kind souls have posted translations for those who prefer not to wait for the subs to be released.
Also, if you'd like any more tips about sites, etc., you can post a question on DB's Open Thread (best to do it on a Friday) and you'll find that other dramalovers are all too happy to share tips on becoming a better addict! Happy watching.... :D

OMO, i really don't mind at all for the extension. The best long drama i've seen. I actually hate long drama, but decide to give it a try for Kim Hyun Joo. And it turn out to loveee this drama. I love the character of Han Jung Won, and sometimes I hate the male lead character, and felt he is so annoying, eventhough he also has his charming side. I really really hate her evil sister. But overall, i think this is a good drama with a powerfull cast. I could cry a river or happily laugh when watch this drama, no wonder if this drama have a good rate.
