Lie To Me: Episode 9 Open Thread
by girlfriday
The Lie is finally outed, though to no discernable difference as far as Ah-jung’s frenemy-ship with So-ran is concerned. They even seem to be closer for it, which pretty much solidifies the fact that this is a relationship I will never come to understand. Seriously, can we introduce this girl to other girls who are actually, yunno, NICE? And cool? They exist! They do! I swears it!
Basically The Lie gets replaced by The Denial, wherein Ki-joon and Ah-jung both know that they like each other, but refuse to tell the other. Even with a very dramatic and very unnecessary rescue in the woods to throw them together, she rebuffs his attempts to clear up the misunderstandings that are starting to build. (Now he thinks SHE was just “acting,” despite the fact that she was the one who was constantly asking HIM that very question when they were “married.” Gah.) There’s a lot of pride and hurt feelings to stop them, though it seems the biggest obstacle is Ki-joon’s refusal to clean up his past with That Girl.
He FINALLY says something to her — “I like another woman” — (that took you WAY too long to say, dude) and she clues in to something going on between him and Ah-jung. The problem is that Ah-jung herself has no such luck in reading Ki-joon’s mind, and decides to forge ahead and start going on blind dates as suggested by Dad.
Her heart’s not in it, of course, but no worries. Two big heroes to the rescue… only they’re, um… BROTHERS.
What’s that they say about history being doomed to repeat itself?

To be honest, I don't like where the show is taking us. Why the denial? Isn't it better to just come clean with everything??
I kind of understand why So Ran and Ah Jung are closer now. They both lied because they both feel in a lower place towards each other... so sad. I hope now they can become real friends.

I can't tell if I wasn't paying attention before or the look of the show gotten better. Some details I liked: So-Ran's shirt in the scene where she has coffee with Ah-jung, her feathery head thing at the hotel, Aunt's diamond starfish broach, the new haircuts, Ki-joon's continued lapel decorations.
Also liked So-Ran's tiny lip curl as she observed Ki-joon and the ex holding hands.
All the people running around in the woods in their suits was so silly. I'm glad they acknowledged manager Park's impractical footwear.

She fell down a mountain??? Really, drama? And this is an improvement in the writing? And it's a good thing coincidence is on KJ's side so he never has to make an effort to pursue AJ, since she's always placed right in his path.
I find this show so annoying. I'm sort of glad it's coming in 3rd out of 3 in the ratings. The writing certainly doesn't deserve better. And YEH is so gorgeous -- why is she so often made to look like a sad-sack?

hi me! i turn off my brain a bit when I watch this so I can enjoy it. I just focus on the YEH-KJH chemistry. Haha! I get lots of the amazing, witty, clever, exquisite from Best Love and all the charm, cute, heart-warming from BFB. So, from LTM I get all the passion and hawt and high-likelihood-of-it- happening-in-real-life-for-the-actors kind of happy, soooooo.... :-)

W/o "good writing" how does one get to relate or "feel" for the characters?
The writing on LTM is laughably bad (even worse than "Secret Garden" - which was pretty bad).

Actually, Secret Garden was written well (except for the soul-swap arc). On the whole, SG was 4 out 5 stars in my book. Wonderful dialogue, great actors, excellent chemistry (and they were just glaring at each other), great supporting characters, good directing & editing, excellent soundtrack, wonderful cinematography, parody-worthy. It was fast-paced and I wasn't bored even once. The only thing I didn't like was I never connected with the characters. When I watch dramas or read books, I'd like to be able to feel that I'm part of it, not just an observer. Nonetheless, SG was memorable in lots of ways and unforgettable specially Hyun-bin as Joo-won.

June 7, 2011 at 12:24 AM
I'd just like to add that despite my observer status while watching SG, I liked that I saw the characters not the actors. Hyun-bin was Joo-won, not Hyun-bin ACTING AS Joo-won. Same with Ha Ji-won. She was Gil Ra-im for me. With LTM, it's the opposite. I don't see KJ & AJ. I see Kang Ji-hwan and Yoon Eun-hye acting as KJ & AJ respectively. So despite SG's flaws, it's something that I'd watch again and would tell friends about (especially first-time kdrama watchers). There are better "fluffs" out there that is worth wasting 16 hours of your time on. Maybe the actors aren't as good or as pretty as KJH or YEH, but the story carried the drama.

The fact you couldn't feel for the characters is a testament to the bad writing. The writer is a pro which is why she had sharp dialogue but the true heart of the drama was missing and that's why some like me think the writing was bad.
Required fields are marked *
...
June 7, 2011 at 5:40 AM
No it's not. Not connecting with characters does not mean that the writing's bad. It just means that they have a different experience or made different decisions so you can't empathize but you can appreciate the whole. I didn't feel/wasn't able to connect with the characters of Schindler's List and you can't say that was badly written. Or to give examples of Rom-coms: Runaway Bride, Sex and the City, Knocked Up. For kdramas: maybe because I was younger then so I didn't feel connected with MNIKSS & DGCH but those were well written.
Jane
June 7, 2011 at 6:35 AM
..., what you're talking about is being unable to relate to the characters which is different from not connecting with them.

June 7, 2011 at 12:39 PM
You kidding me?
The dialogue stunk (little that was memorable or funny) and the situations and characters were so cliche/stereotypical.
Worst of all, the whole relationship and how it "developed" was simply unbelievable; Joo-won was basically stalking Ra-im and even forced himself upon her a couple of time w/ her hitting him and shrieking at him all the way and then boom, all of a sudden, she's deeply in love with him? lol
None of the characters were interesting and even the whole body switch thing was lamely used.

Ahhhh, you must be the other person besides me who thought that "Secret Garden" was awful!! I mean, I personally think that the idea and the story is fantastic, but the way they developed it and executed it was horrible. It was one of those dramas that I really, reeeeeallly wanted to like, but I found it so boring, shallowly written for the most part, and uninteresting, I ended up forwarding the last 5 or 6 eps. And the worst of all is exactly what Ace mentions and my opinion, the worst faul in LTM, too: the inability as a viewer to connect, or even care, for the characters.
But Hyun Bin and Yoon Sang Hyun at least made it visually bearable. The same thing with Kang Ji Wan, Park Hoon and Sang Hee for LTM...
And now I patiently wait at the stakes, where I've been many, many times for pretty much giving my opinion on SG... :)

This is the problem with so many readers here, they try to be the expect of drama analyzer instead of enjoying a show. SC is very entertaining drama and entertainment is what the drama produced.
If you want quality, watch Oscar nominated film instead.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with having expectations and or analyzing even a romcom.
kim Sam soon is one romcom that has witty dialogue.
Romcom does not automatically have to equal mediocre script and acting.
Intelligent thought provoking analysis is part of the experience for most dramabeans readers.
If everything is well executed people will enjoy the show more!

A good romcom means having interesting characters and having funny, witty dialogue, but most importantly, showing how the relationship btwn the 2 leads develops over time - these are things that neither SG or LTM had/have (instead, they are both ripe with stereotypical, stilted characters and cliche filled situations and dialogue).
And I'm not talking about "Oscar worthy" material (not that many of the films nominated for Oscars are just there due to popularity and not actual quality).
Nobody is going to mistake "My Princess" for high drama, but while MP had its faults, it had its share of witty dialogue and endearing, fun scenes.
Furthermore, HB's and HJW's acting in SG was just OK (HJW's crying/emotional scenes weren't that believable); heck, for acting, SSH and KTH did a better job in MP.

I second to your opinion. Almost all the complains here are technical. I was glad that DB drop the recap because I sort of thinking the recap actually affect many readers who actually didn't watch the show or they watch without sub then jump to conclusion that the drama is boring etc.
DB recaps are sometimes to technical, this is a drama please and a romcom, you have to add entertainment aspect to it. Everyone know LTM script is not the best but it is very much enjoyable and this aspect of drama should be included in recaps too. Not to mention the leads are just great.
To DB, it was good decision, if you don't enjoy it then don't write about it.
To readers, grow up, have your own thought, watch the show properly before comment!!

I had never hated any character so much but Ki joon's brother is a total nuisance. Because of his selfish one sided love, it resulted in this whole mess. On 1 side i was supporting ki Joon and Yoon Joo but i can't bear to see Yoon Eun Hye suffering either.
All because of 1 selfish prick who break up the marriage. GODDAMNYOU!!!
Can't Ki Joon practise bigamy and have both of them? I can't bear to seperate either of the females from him xD

I really like this ep! I mean, there were definitely lame/often used plot devices, but my insides were all tied up due to the angst. But the noble idiocy angst was short livEd, as KJ told his old girl that he likd someone else, and AJ that he liked her. That's really fast movement! For ep 9! Does that mean we're in for 10 more eps of angst? Oh no, that's no good.

amazing, I think those who love it are in the "Plot? What Plot?" category. They just enjoy it for the chemistry between the actors and enjoy watching them make out. But majority of the people with complaints have them because they are looking for a story with a good plot and execution and are disappointed with this. I don't think anyone can objectively say that this is a well written or even a refreshingly written drama. But as you said, it's a matter of preference.

They can’t resist KJW and YEH sizzling chemistry. I know I can’t. And as much as I like to read a smart or funny comment, but what I love more is to read an honest opinion..in any form. Different people have different cup of tea, I love to hear about it, even when it blows my mind. For example I just don’t get it if someone says they prefer LTM over BL, I just go "..uhmm what??" but curious to read their reasoning. I’m also curious why JB/GF didn’t bother to watch City Hall. I love the sassiness of JB/GF’s writing and I appreciate Ockoala’s detailed and long recap. I just love this kdrama land, aren’t we all?

I love the chance to rave and rant about LTO. I started out watching this coz I love both the leads. Now I am just hanging on coz of the scourching hot chemistry between them.
It kinda reminds me a lot of Kim Sam soon. I do wish there were more kissing...
I have this question....why is Sang Hee into Ah Jung too?
And when did that happen? Coz I never saw it coming.
GF says Ki Joon always gave Sang Hee all the good toys.” Yeah, after he played with ‘em first!
I think Sang Hee feels that big brother will always have everything he wants. He doesn't even want to try and cut himself off from the family.
Sometimes when you're a youngest sibling you end up not living up to your order sibling's achievements that you struggle NOT to be like them.
Ki Joon is a great big brother, I don't think he was really into YJ coz if you love that person to death you'd hold on to her no matter what...I want to see him hold on to Ah Jung.

I live this series but this episode was a downer and a drag to watch. HKJ is delusionally cold at GAJ, the whole search and rescue scene was cliche and unnecessary, and for some reason, GAJ crying at the bench didn't swoon me over. Usually YEH does such a fantastic job crying but this one was meh.
Park Hoon was barely used, Sanghee has been absent for quite some time with barely any screen time, and the ex-gf Yonjoo was never given a chance for viewers to warm up to her that we all hate her guts. Sanghee's U-turn chase to World hotel for GAJ is totally unmerited and seems to have happened out of nowhere. The script definitely is suffering from lack of depth and lack of polish.
Having said all that, the very end of ep 9 is exciting where HKJ forcibly takes GAJ by her hand and I liked what I saw in the preview for ep 10 (except that blurb about Yonjoo getting married... ugh, c'mon, get over him already!)
We have the two brothers rivalry coming up. Sadly for Sanghee, it's a lost cause... they should've let the relationship bet GAJ and Sanghee flourish a bit more so GAJ will be in for a slight dilemma... but as the episodes went on, right from around house warming, Sanghee has been pretty much absent.

After reading many recaps and also the comments in many drama, I can categorize few groups of readers here:
#1. Group that actually watch the show, some enjoy it, some are not and their humble , objective opinion are appreciated.
#2. Group that are not bothered to watch but write bunch of useless comment just for the excitement, spread of hate and jealousy in a hot topic.
#3. Group that don't have their own opinion and just follow the majority.
#4. Group that stupid enough to watch the show without sub and then make hated comments.
Unfortunately, group 2-4 are the majority of readers in many recaps.

Look, not all Oscar-nominated films are good. It's mostly politics behind the scenes. The last film that won for Best Picture that I watched was The Lord of the rings: Return of the King and that was back in 2003.
We're not looking for an award winning drama (most of the awards at year's end are mere consolation prizes anyway). Is it too much to expect that the quality of the teaser trailer be the same as the actual drama? I had no expectations at the start of May regarding this but that damn teaser made me so excited. If I could give one compliment about LTM, it's that the teaser was darn good. I could rewatch those over and over. If you're bored 80% of the time by the time the drama is already at a third of it's run, then why subject yourself to more sleep-inducing story. There are a lot of better dramas currently airing and there are also old entertaining quality dramas (The Last Scandal of My Life, Flowers for My Life, Who Are You?, etc).
It's not a bad thing to be disappointed. They can take it as constructive criticism. After watching so many dramas, some even more crappy than this, but some are diamonds of the first water, then why settle for anything less? Especially from actors you'd expect to be up to some standard entertainment. It's also disheartening to find that after their hardwork in Hong Gil-dong/Coffee House (for KJH) and Coffee Prince (for YEH), they would now be known only as "kdrama's best kissers". That's so superficial and sort of like a demotion from their previous awesome work. We can't always be shallow. No matter how much I love seeing an actor, say Johnny Depp, I don't watch all of his films especially if the script's not good (ex. The Tourist).
Oh and by the way, let's add another category. People who don't watch the show, don't bother to watch it subbed or raw (after ep.3 or 4), don't read Ockoala's recaps, love reading stupid fangirl comments by diehard fans, but have definite opinions and standards, so therefore find replying to said comments more entertaining than said show.

This is why I am complaing, how can you comment if you don't wacht, don't read, don't event know the show could make an objective comment ? This is what I call group #3, just follow the other....bangwagoners...

Thank you GF. LTM is so entertaining. Can feel the love, the pain, the anger, the jealousy, the frustration. It must hurt so much after the sweet kisses. Poor Ah Jung. Got to suffer a bit more Ki Joon. So fickle minded for a man. Yoon Jo seduced him to get back but KJ is obviously not over her yet.
So this lover boy is confused. AJ & KJ will go through the love process of pain & hurt & frustrations. Love after is not just being happy. If they truly love each other they will work it out before they hurt each other too much.
Complicated to have 2 brothers liking the same girl. May the best guy win. It happens in real life. Siblings liking/loving the same person. IN LTM, I hope Sang Hee will back out first.

I've just watched ep 9 with English subtitles. I really really like this ep because Ki Joon admits to Ah Jung that he kissed her because he likes her. Then he tells Yoon Joo tha he likes someone else...confirms YJ's guess that its Ah Jung! Yay!
But preview for next ep shows Yoon Joo telling Ah Jung that she & KJ are getting married! Aaaah! Jump in the lake YJ!

Lie to me is a lite rom com and I am thoroughly enjoying watching it. The last few episodes have given us a nice story and KJ-YEH pairing is ballistic chemistry and excellent performance. Looking forward to how the two now come together for the actual marriage.

the scene with the bench and the cherry blossoms (or missing cherry blossoms) was KO for me, and that in a good sense. I did not know if to cry or be amused. So I did both, my tears wey flowing as I watched the scene where Ae Jung was crying in her fathers arms and was amused by how ridiculous her reason for crying appeared to be.

Haircuts all around in this episode. I know this is crap but the chemistry is great and I can't wait for the next episode ! ! ! but its getting to that point where they really need a different plot line because they can't just deny for the next 7 episodes, that will drive me insane

I do love this drama. Light, fun, romantic and real.
Okay, maybe sometime the story getting cliche and things got predicted easily, but things I want to get of watching K-Dramas is the laugh, actors chemistry and unrealistic, yet nice things you won't meet or hardly meet on the real life.
But If you don't like it, just give it up. Some K-Drama is not for everyone. Because myself just can not finish watching My Girlfriend is a gumiho, yet I know that the drama is huge and everyone told me to give it more try. But, when you just not into it thats it.
Do not mean to offend anyone. Just random thinking of mine :)

LTM is not just about the lie about marriage. Another lie was formed. Ah Jung saying that she's ok. she's cool with Ki Joon getting back with his former fiance. Ki Joon lying to Ah Jung,to his former fiance and to his self. I think the story is finally moving up. :D
Best Episode so far!

Also, why did (almost) everyone get a haircut all of a sudden? I can understand AJ, the whole Felicity thing but the guys too?
