Lie To Me: Episode 13 Open Thread

EPISODE 13 WEECAP

Ki-joon ditches his big dinner meeting to take Ah-jung out to “relieve some stress.” Aww, yeah. Oh wait, he means games and street food. I guess that’s fun too.

(Now, there’s the Kang Ji-hwan I miss seeing onscreen! All boyish energy and charm. It’s like he’s flattened out his natural liveliness for this role, when really he’s at his best being totally off-the-wall. See: Coffee House, Hong Gil Dong, Level 7 Civil Servant.)

He buys them ice cream, and shoves hers in her face. Aw man, who totally thought there was gonna be an ice cream kiss here?

Alas, some criminally bad timing is working against them (as is wont to happen in K-dramas), because So-ran sees Yoon-ju’s dour-looking dinner party with Aunt CEO and calls Ah-jung. She’s relieved (for once acting like a friend and not frenemy) when Ah-jung confirms she’s on a date with Ki-joon — just as Yoon-ju’s mother overhears her phone call, and takes the family away, offended.

There are a lot of business dealings in this episode, and the nutshell version is this: Ki-joon tells Aunt he’ll get them back on track with their entry in the Chinese market, but that they’ll do it without Yoon-ju’s stepdad. He’ll appeal to Chen directly and change his mind, and he does, kind of. He drops in on a mahjong game — are we in some mobster movie now? Weird, weird tone all of a sudden — and gets Chen to reconsider his proposal.

There’s a big Korea-China event being planned by Ah-jung’s office, and it’s decided that the attendees will stay at World Hotel. Her co-worker hears her talking to Ki-joon on the phone and assumes that Ki-joon lobbied Ah-jung with some backroom deal to secure this outcome, because to him that makes more sense than that these two are dating. Maybe he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

The Lovelorn Trio — Sang-hee, Yoon-ju, and ajusshi Seok-bong — go on a painting outing by the lake. Sang-hee dramatically sighs that his love always turns into a “crime.”

Yoon-ju says her breakup isn’t his fault, though she used to blame him for it. Now she calls it a test that she and Ki-joon failed, and she says everyone has changed but her. Ergo, now she will change too. Those would be reassuring words…except why does she have evil scary bitchface when she says that? Uh-oh…

Ah-jung totally uses the Korea-China event to call Ki-joon to her office (citing the mistakes in the planning info sent by his side), and takes a hard line against him. Her co-workers are impressed at how assertively she handles him, totally missing the fact that the couple is blatantly flirting right under their noses. Like I said, not exactly a brain trust, these guys.

Both Ah-jung and Ki-joon are working late nights, and he shows up to whisk her away for the night…to a jjimjilbang. She calls Dad to say she’ll be working all night, and he says the same. Naturally, they run into Dad and Ae-kyung, also on their own covert date.

The jjimjilbang holds a soda-drinking contest, which makes Ki-joon comment knowingly to Ah-jung, “Like…cola?” Rawr.

Dad challenges Ki-joon to another drinking contest, ’cause it’s the Korean way. Or maybe it’s just the manly way. Put those things away, boys, you might hurt someone with ’em. (Dad wins this time.)

Ki-joon sends Chen a revised contract to consider, then goes to China — just as the scandal hits the newspapers about him losing out on his entree into the Chinese market due to his lie. Looks like some of Aunt’s board members are taking advantage of Ki-joon’s shaky status to shake him up even more.

Ah-jung feels guilty because the lie was hers, and Yoon-ju lays it on even thicker, telling her that Ki-joon carries lots of baggage, that he’s lost a lot in his life, and that Ah-jung should think of what’s best for him. Aunt CEO calls her in to hammer that nail in deeper, asking her to let go of him.

Ah-jung cries, calls Jae-bum for legal advice, and submits her resignation. She shows up to the hotel where reporters are gathered, identifies herself, and reveals that it was her lie, not Ki-joon’s.

this drama is a lousy one that's why the ratings are still in low..i like the female lead in Goong time but now seems like she is having more plastic surgery on her face that's why i find her looks old and ugly and she's overacted on her face expressions..the male guy is hottie and handsome.

While "LTM" may be a miserable mess due to its absolutely horrible writing, taking such a potshot at YEH is uncalled for.

While YEH can look pretty, she never had classic facial features and she certainly hasn't had plastic surgery (she looks the same as from her Baby Box or X-Man years).

Actually, neither YEH or KJH are what one would consider really beautiful, but they have other qualities that add to their charm.

Agreed with you 100%. This is a drama blog, no need to troll YEH.

I am finding the rants even more entertaining than the weecaps this week, picking up popcorn and watching its like watching commenting on allkpop. I dropped the drama, it annoyed me, but do think that people have been a little too harsh about it, I think its cause we were all expecting something great and the drama had potential to be something great.

@ appie,4.1.1.2.1 I wasn't replying to AsianRomance's post! My answer was to ellewu's post!

@@26.1.1.2.1 Appie If I am not mistaken, he learnt about that in the first episode, the surrogate father tells him before he faints (thought he'd die).
Its both nosensial what the surrogate father did in a first place, and its nosensial what Min Ho's character did later. So , is this less no-sensial plot than in LFM? Defenatetly NO.

a)LOL my bad, but either way Asianromance or ellewu's post, you still need to understand their point.

b)And his surrogate father does not tell him that he was kidnapped, he tells Lee Min Ho that his mother abandoned him. Therefore LMH only sees his surrogate father his only parent, and condemning would be last thought (well until the truth is revealed). Sure, I don't agree with the surrogate father's way of avenging his friend's death but it makes total sense if you characterise him, he has a mind of an assassin, therefore he's cold and ruthless.

Lee Min Ho's character was bought up by surrogate father since birth, and was trained to be like ruthless killer. I'm not sure what you mean about "what he did later", but I like LMH's revenge ideology clashing with the surrogate father's.

And I'm not sure what you mean by 'no-sensial' but in terms of plot development and characterisation, it's better than LTM.

It has been clarified in later episodes that he thinks his mother abandoned him. His surrogate father is the only father he knows and he doesn't know yet that he was taken from his mother. As for Jinpyo he is a crazy man out for revenge and he doesn't care about anyone else.

Anyway all these things even if it's nonsense eventually lead somewhere meaning more things about the characters and their universe can be explored.

With LTM many things happen that don't seem to lead the story anywhere and I guess that's what dissapoints most people.

I love LTM , but I never thought that it had the strongest story ever. Actually, I never though that any rom com has it. Even BestLove (Which I adore) its a little bit unrealistic , but, i m just hooked.
The problem with LTM (from my point of view), its that has NOT any critical points. Only minor problems occur, in order to stop the happiness of the lead couple. Its not only one, and a big one, but small , minor, which actually making it boring, instead of interesting. However, i really like it

well, actually, it was revealed in later episode that his surrogate father told him his mom abandoned him.

you only watched the 1st episode, yet you want to judge the whole show. its up to you, but i feel the need to clarify it since what you said is wrong.

City Hunter is a mystery type. what may not make sense or confusing in the beginning have been revealed the real truth behind it one by one in later episode.

it was even revealed how the unskilled Nana can become a Blue House bodyguard. her boss helped her because her father was once a bodyguard there too and he pitied her.

well, of course there were some scenes/plots require suspension of disbelief, but the story is not nonsensical like you said.

i have yet to watch this drama. checking out the recaps for all dramas here, to decide if i want to watch it later. thank you JB & GF for all the recaps!

I just watched the first episode only, so probably, yes, I missed those points. I m not going to judge this drama, but the plot really didn't draw my attention, although i like mystery dramas.
The fact that he just kidnapped a baby boy, the baby of his so-called friend, really wasn't something that I would like to see, or I do find interesting. If you value a person that much, that you want to get revenge for his death, then you shouldn't use the one person he loves most, his kid, and make his woman suffer of both his death and his son's dissapearance.
Anyway, I never said that LTM hasn't nosensiCal (Sorry for my previous spellings) elements, but the way it is portrayed by some people, it makes it look like is the most bizarre drama ever

I have to agree with Jen lol, it is starting to feel like work watching this drama. This isn't meant to be a "nasty" comment either. And I do recognize the obvious chemistry you mention LTM|LoveBoat. anyhow, ill watch to the end i guess.

I feel like this episode was "less bad" than the past couple eps. At this point, I think the good parts are Ah Jung and Ki-Joon's cute dates and interactions. The conflict with Yoon Ju still seems oddly recycled from Sam Soon...just annoying and dull. Otherwise I spent most of the episode liking Ah Jung's hairstyle and trying to figure why Ki-Joon is always matching that little flower on his suits.

Was that supposed to be Mahjong? Because if it was, they definitely don't know how to play it. And the show is pure nuts!
