Lie To Me: Episode 10 Open Thread
by javabeans
Weecap!
Both sides have acknowledged their feelings for each other, so to keep the drama going for another three weeks, Episode 10 introduces a grab bag of manufactured conflicts. Warning: Don’t think too hard, or head hurty.
So Ah-jung acts demure on her mat-seon, Sam-soon style, and Ki-joon drags her outta there, Sam-shik style. She admits she likes him, and asks him not to like that other chick. His stance: I don’t like her, but I don’t want to hurt her, hence I will hurt you, the one I do like…. He asks if she could like him if he were so wishy-washy as to renege on an old commitment. No, I’m sure she loves ya because you’re wishy-washy about your feelings. Ugh, this is the Full House conflict that drove me batty. It’s like the opposite of having your cake and eating it too. It’s…purposely buying your cake, setting it out to look at all day, and then giving it away and watching someone else eat it.
Manager Park rips Ki-joon a new one for his stupidity (yay!) and tells him to grow a pair, and that trying to let Yoon-ju down easy will hurt her more. Yoon-ju does her share of crazy by announcing her wedding, without telling her groom. She lets that drop in Ah-jung’s lap triumphantly.
Ki-joon tries to explain that it’s a misunderstanding, and tags along on Ah-jung’s work dinner, buying out the restaurant and toasting her co-workers from the next table over. She gets drunk and drops her phone, which he picks up and returns, but not before recording a video clip where he calls her “Ah-jung-ah,” which she listens to on repeat.
So-ran’s Catty Crew buys friendship rings, and So-ran buys one for Ah-jung. Is reconciliation in the picture? But no, Jae-bum drops by and gets all handsy with Ah-jung (hands of concern!), and So-ran sees and misunderstands.
Ki-joon offers to wait until Yoon-ju has gotten over him before starting with Ah-jung. Sure, why not? We need the conflict, even if it’s nonsensical. Yoon-ju apologizes about lying about their wedding, but says she may never get over him — will Ah-jung wait for him forever? You two geniuses are ignoring the more pertinent question: Does Ah-jung know she’s waiting? Ki-joon instead asks for “some time,” because he just can’t cut the cord. JUST BREAK UP, YOU LILY-LIVERED WUSSYPANTS.
Sang-hee sulks, drinks, and throws a hissyfit over falling for another girl his brother likes. His tortured broodfest is horribly uncomfortable to watch. Sorry, honey, you’re super cute but you’re not nearly a good enough actor to pull this off, cringe.
Ah-jung plans some big tourism conference — at a World Hotel resort, natch — and who should show up but Chairman Chen? Oh god, this old chestnut? AGAIN?
She worries that she might be fired — another colleague was let go because of the messy handling of his personal relationship, and civil servants are apparently supposed to be free of any and all scandal, not that this makes any sense, but hey, we need more false conflict! So Ki-joon promises to divert Chen and scrambles to intercept him, only Ah-jung (of course!) runs into him first. Chen is like, Hello there Mrs. Wife! And her minister boss is like, Uh, Wife? They wait expectantly and ask if she’s married or not.
Ah-jung is torn — tell the truth and preserve her job? Or say she’s married and save Ki-joon’s investment? The power of love compels her to lie and say she’s married, only that’s when Ki-joon appears and announces, “No. I’m not married.”
Wha—? Are you a Noble Idiot, or just an idiot? It’s hard to say.

Such a funny weecap for such annoying show. Why is Ki Joon such a dope? He could dump a girl three years ago, but now he's incapable of just saying it's over? He needs time apart from YJ -- for what? To break up with her *more*? And somehow it's okay to hurt the person you like, because you don't want to hurt your ex, and to expect someone to show how much she likes you by waiting around while you uselessly flail some more. Okay...not. Why should Ah Jung stick around for any of this mess? But the sad part is KJ read her right -- she is sticking around of course, emotionally at least, and now she's just pathetic.
Also, trying to save her job by saying they're not married doesn't work when AJ just SAID they were married in front of her boss -- because in any case, she's already lied! They play it like this is a big hero moment and it makes NO sense. Argh, show.

Is it just me or KJH looks tired (almost all the time) in this drama? As if he's worn out, which I don't doubt because this drama is such a ... bored?
Sigh, their (YEH & KJH) talent is wasted in here. Well to say totally wasted could be an overstatement because we've got good emotional scenes from YEH but the writers are boring me to death! A disappointment.

Reading this weecap and comparing it to the full recap on KoalaPG, I feel like I finally realize what a difference personal preferences make on people's opinions on something.
Whenever I read JB's weecaps, I have an image in my head of her downing shots or shouting out curses every five minutes, or when something stupid happens on LTM.
KoalaPG, on the other hand, I picture watching this whilst eating a huge tub of popcorn and a look of utter glee, particularly when the OTP appears.
I'm not a fan, though I don't really mind watching this with my sis, who does so on vikii every Tues and Wed with military punctuality at that. I find that though the storytelling is horrible at times, the plot stupid at times, it is way too cliched and don't even bother to find a refreshing twist to said cliches most times, I find myself thinking what K-drama isn't? This is a K-drama after all.

Oh, MayaSong! I hope LTM did not give a bad name to all kdramas in general. Cliche is global not just in kdramaland. But there many kdramas out there that are well-written and well-directed and well-acted. If you have not watched them yet, you may want to try City Hall, Coffee Prince, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Baker King (depends upon yr tastes...) in the rom-com or drama genre.

And if you love metaphorical references with good solid acting and clever writing, try Best Love, which is currently airing now. :-) Baby-faced Beauty is also very charming and heart-warming...you will love it if you are interested in the fashion design business...
And that is just to name a few...

I kindda agree with you on the two different tastes, as much as I love JB and GF, their sometimes acerbic opinions takes the fun out of watching fluffy drama's like LTM (sometimes I don't their read recaps on certain drama's because of that... call me shallow but I am fine with suspending belief most of the time). But I think we all enjoy sharing our opinions and hearing other opinions about drama's otherwise we wouldn't be here...

I love the leads chemistry together. This has me coming back for more. What also keeps me coming back... seeing how bad and predictable the story will be. I know, I know - this should have me turning away and watching something else but honestly, I felt kind of excited that after watching enough Kdramas understanding plot formulas that I am able to really tell what is crap in terms of a Korean produced drama.
I adore YEH a lot so it's hard me to not watch her.
And I have to say that Kang Ji Hwan has me wrapped around his finger. The man is gorgeous and his voice, aigoo! *fans self* Sorry! Ladies! I just have to be honest.

I can't decide whether to completely give up on this show or keep watching. It's starting to feel like bits and pieces have been cut from other dramas and pasted together without adding anything else interesting.
I know the OTP has great chemistry and The kisses were HOT. I kept watching this show because I know that when they end up together it will be amazing but what's the point when the road there isn't even interesting?

DRAMA REVIEW

Lie To Me ”Hyun Ki Joon Is Definitely A Main Character of A Melodrama.”
The reason for his indecisiveness is due to characteristics of a melodrama storyline.
Reporter Kim Yoon Suk
Could it be this?
“Why is it that the girls I fall for always like my older brother?”
I’ve said it before. The key to the current storyline could be held by Hyun Sang Hee (Sung Joon). Because Hyun Ki Joon (Kang Ji Hwan) and Gong Ah Jung (Yoon Eun Hye) are too honest and straightforward to be considered main characters of a melodrama, there should be someone who appears to quickly alter the flow of the storyline. And I had carefully anticipated that it could be something to do with the emotions surrounding Oh Yoon Joo (Jo Yoon Hee). But Hyun Sang Hee likes Gong Ah Jung as well?
Then again, the character with the most strength in the drama is Hyun Ki Joon and Hyun Sang Hee’s aunt, Chairwoman Hyun Myung Jin (Oh Mi Hee). And what she hates the most is two brothers fighting for the same girl. That’s why she couldn’t accept Oh Yoon Joo even though she liked her. Even this time around, she made things complicated by getting Gong Ah Jung involved in order to get Oh Yoon Joo to give up on Hyun Ki Joon. But how would Chairwoman Hyun Myung Jin react if she finds out such truths (Both brothers liking Gong Ah Jung)?
This should allow Oh Yoon Joo, who had been nothing more than a sunflower looking from afar at Hyun Ki Joon thus far, to reveal her true presence. Just like how she caused misunderstandings by lying that she is to marry Hyun Ki Joon. The moment Oh Yoon Joo confirms Hyun Sang Hee’s feelings for Gong Ah Jung, she will pose a wall of reality that is just as strong as emotional intensity that draws Hyun Ki Joon and Gong Ah Jung together. Just like how things are too twisted and complicated for their relationship to be smooth and reflect their true feelings for one another…
It’s not even Gong Ah Jung, but..
“Ah Jung ah!”
Ah Jung’s heart, scarred and angry from the pain she received from Yoon Joo, is shaken again with just that one informal and affectionate calling. As she replays Hyun Ki Joon’s video of calling her “Ah Jung~ah” over and over, her face which kept an uninterested expression turns into an expression of much happiness. But even at that moment, Hyun Ki Joon’s affectionate nature that keeps him from forcing Oh Yoon Joon to give up on him, is giving Gong Ah Jung scars.
“Didn’t I tell you before? Being considerate can actually bring scars! Don’t be considerate in things you can’t be responsible for! This may be your best effort, but it’s only the best solution for you! Be decisive!”
Hyun Ki Joon’s friend and manager Park Ji Yoon (Park Ji Yoon)’s words are exactly the correct answer. Oh Yoon Joo says the same thing as well.
“You’ll wait until my heart is ready to let you go? How can it get ready? If it never becomes ready, will you wait forever? Did Gong Ah Jung say that she’d wait forever as well? Do you know how much of a coward you are right now?”
That’s why Gong Ah Jung had regrets about telling Hyun Ki Joon that she liked him.
“If you like me, can’t you just like me only?”
Of course, indecisiveness is the reason why melodramas can be what it is. If the word ‘indecisiveness’ didn’t exist, melodramas wouldn’t exist. This is even more prevalent in the culture of South East Asia.
It is the act of being considerate towards another and the inability to be honest about your true feelings, that twist stories to bring misunderstandings and complications for several months of airing the story, until such issues are resolved only at the end.
It’s even in the lyrics of songs. The thing that brings more sadness than love is compassion. Heo Young Man asserts loyalty over love in his manhwa (comic book) “The Gambler (remade into K-drama & K-Movie)’. Perhaps emotions that are stronger than love, things which are just as strong as love at times, turn caring considerations into heartless acts. The act is only for the sake of the person him/herself. To try to satisfy everyone is to fail in satisfying anyone. That’s why Gong Ah Jung is hurt and cries, even though this is a romantic comedy. Hyun Ki Joon is scarred from hurting her as well. While he says that he can’t hurt Oh Yoon Joo, she is being scarred as well. But even so, this awkward image is probably how people actually live their lives as they love.
What will become of their love that results from Oh Yoon Joon’s inability to let go of her sufferings and ignorance due to Hyun Ki Joon’s caring considerations? What’s definite is that there are more than few episodes remaining, and the two characters’ difficulties won’t end until all of the episodes are aired. Oh Yoon Joo will also play a significant part in their difficulties as well. As Hyun Ki Joon and Gong Ah Jung move closer and become more honest about their feelings toward each other, there will be more external factors that interfere with their outcome. This is the destiny of a melodrama. Indecisiveness creates melodrama in such ways.
In any case, while the relationship of Hyun Ki Joon and Gong Ah Jung has become complicated, Gong Ah Jung and Yoo So Ran (Hong Soo Hyun)’s relationship has also become just as complicated. For sure, Yoo So Ran maintains a strange and troubled mental state. She becomes a friend of Gong Ah Jung only when Gong Ah Jung does worse than her. When Gong Ah Jung is doing better than her, Gong Ah Jung becomes a subject of hate and jealousy. But when Gong Ah Jung is facing a situation worse than her, Yoo So Ran can be the most sensitive and caring person to her. Could this just be Yoo So Ran’s own way of loving Gong Ah Jung? It was probably due to her own sense of shortcomings, lack of her self esteem, from comparing herself to Gong Ah Jung. Just like how she has no choice but to always be aware of Gong Ah Jung in her daily life.
But even the rare affection of Yoon So Ran runs into trouble due to her husband Chun Jae Bum (Ryu Seung Soo). It could be an act of rebellion from not receiving proper love. It’s most likely just an act to let everyone know his frustrations. “Even if you cheat, don’t get caught by Gong Ah Jung”. “As long as Gong Ah Jung doesn’t find out that you’ve cheated, it is okay”. This scars Chun Jae Bum as well.
Is Chun Jae Bum really approaching Gong Ah Jung because he likes her? Or could it be that he is only using Gong Ah Jung to get revenge, just as Yoo So Ran had done?
The person who feels uncomfortable in this situation is Gong Ah Jung, who still considers Yoo So Ran her friend and wants to relieve the misunderstandings. Human relations take courses based more on external forces than their own feelings, just like Hyun Ki Joon and Gong Ah Jung’s relationship. And just like Gong Ah Jung and Yoo So Ran’s relationship. It is most likely that Yoo So Ran didn’t marry Chun Jae Bum just to devastate Gong Ah Jung.
In any case, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen such a loser of a character (Hyun Ki Joon). He hurts others for his personal justice and carries on his egotistic ways. Simply put, he acts cowardly. He doesn’t want anyone to think of him as a bad man. So he hurts Oh Yoon Joo and Gong Ah Jung. If things have been decided already, he should just take the responsibility and cleanly end the relationship (with Oh Yoon Joo). But he can’t do that. But I guess this is what makes it a melodrama. Hyun Ki Joon makes me frustrated. And Oh Yoon Joo, who annoyingly gets involved to hold onto Hyun Ki Joon, also makes me frustrated. I’m sad and feel sorry for Gong Ah Jung, who gets thrown around for no reasons. And I pity Hyun Sang Hee, who has to watch Gong Ah Jung and Hyun Ki Joon involved in such a situation. This is simply too deep to be considered a comedy.
Isn’t this a perfect melodrama? The light mood in the earlier episodes has become endlessly heavy. But the fact that just enough situations occur here and there to keep the drama from being overly heavy is the beauty of this drama. No way that they’d run into CEO Chen at that situation. The unexpected situation provided suspense and fun as to see the panicking characters. And the honesty and truth that reappears at that exact moment. Such serious situation offered a perfect moment for him to call her “Ah Jung ah!”
There are dramas that lose its effect as more episodes are aired, and there are dramas that reveal its true worth as more episodes are aired. In this regard, ‘Lie To Me’ is in the latter category. It becomes more entertaining as more episodes are aired. It’s becoming serious, but not overly serious. But it’s definitely become serious. As I watch the drama, the detailed depiction of the mental state of each character makes me amazed at the work done by the writer (Kim Ye Ri).
How will Hyun Sang Hee’s feelings toward Gong Ah Jung be revealed? How far will Oh Yoon Joo get involved? What about Yoo So Ran and Gong Ah Jung’s relationship? What about Yoo So Ran and Chun Jae Bum’s marriage? Above all, what about Hyun Ki Joon and Gong Ah Jung? It’s getting more beautiful as the story is told. It’s becoming more fun. I lose track of time while watching it.
This is the highest praise.

I agree with the reporter that many things in the drama are unnoticed in regards to characters' state of mind. Some symbolic scenes are never mentioned by most viewers. There are some really deep, and well developed lines and scenes in 'Lie To Me'. They are beautifully portrayed. Perhaps taking this drama as a romantic comedy is a wrong way to view things. If taken as a melodrama, some of the gestures and symbolic scenes are very well developed. Linkage with earlier episodes and hit of future storyline are very profound as well.
My favorite scene was Ah Jung getting hit by the football/soccer ball in episode 10.
It was a very profound scene~displaying her breakdown. Here she loses the final grasp of her self respect.
Even a soccer ball that is meant to be kicked around by everyone kicks me around.
Why am I always the other girl? Why am I always the loser in this game of love?
This is what she had told So Ran in earlier episode. "I'm always the one thrown away, the other girl".
She breaks down and resorts to begging Hyun Ki Joon.
"Can't you just like only me? Please like only me! because I like you".
The writer cleverly introduced many themes in 'Lie To Me' through the mental states of the characters..
Here are just few examples of many I've noticed.
In Korean culture where a woman's status is defined her husband's status~her ability to marry a good husband..
So Ran is successful, but lacks self esteem from not being able to accomplish anything herself.
Gong Ah Jung, who is an accomplished woman, can not escape from the cultural boundaries of marriage.
And she lies that she is married. Then she realizes, as much as she is accomplished on her own, and has everyone envy her for marrying a successful man..she actually has nothing because she doesn't have her love.
This of course, is the same state of mind Hyun Sang Hee is in..
“Why is it that the girls I fall for always like my older brother?”

OK, I could have sworn Ki-joon broke up with Yoon-joo about 3 times already, and she still doesn't get it. Granted, yes, he said he'd wait for her to seek solace, but, he has used lines such as "I don't think we can start over"!! That pretty much sums it up, making the line of "I think we need some time apart" pretty unnecessary--or seemingly so, at least.
Honestly, I'm about to throw an empty bottle at Yoon-joo's head to see if that will knock some common sense into her after pouring the contents over Ah-jung and Ki-joon as a desperately needed make out session occurs.
Come on, Show, don't be like this. You can't present us with a beautiful corsage only to tell us that its made with fake flowers.

I wish like crazy that YEH's acting had improved and I wish that the plot wouldn't make Ki Joon so unlikable. I love Kang Ji Hwan and I know what a talented actor he is. But whenever there's a drama where the storyline seems so mediocre, it hurts me deeply to see such a good actor like KJH wasted. And I don't know what to do about Yoon Eun Hye. She doesn't seem to have grown from her "Coffee Prince" days. Or is it that the storytelling is so unbalanced that it seems like she can't act very well? *sigh* I wonder if another veteran actress like Jeon Do Yeon would have made a difference? Maybe then I COULD tell whether it's the actress or the storyline that's affecting my perception. Oh well...as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like a real Pil Joo in my life...but wait - that's another drama...

actually i like the story line of LTM, to some it maybe boring, but that's what love story is, cute simple & not complicated, if it's complicated then it's no longer a love story..they have been successful in entertaining me, that's what i like about it, simple & yet appealing, & most of all i like the 2 lead characters, i don't see them as Ki-joon & Ah-jung, what i see is the real KANG JI HWAN & YOON EUN HYE, their chemistry transcends over the characters they are portraying.
