Ripley poster and character stills
by javabeans
Ripley’s first poster is out! It’s intriguing and a little bit creepy, which is what I think they were going for.
But what I find more interesting is the photo below, which features Lee Da-hae holding the drama’s script. As you may recall, the drama was initially titled Goodbye, Miss Ripley, then dropped most of that to settle on Ripley. But on the script below, the Korean title is written as Miss Ripley, and the English reads Mrs. Ripley Who I Loved. Grammar mistake aside, I’m curious as to why they haven’t adopted either of those options, and a little disappointed that they’re sticking to the plain, uninformative Ripley. But I’ll keep my eyes peeled for another change, should one be coming.
We’ve already seen the “rose-inspired” stills of Lee Da-hae’s character, so now it’s her co-stars’ turns.
Park Yoo-chun, aka Micky Yoochun, is here in his sophomore drama effort playing a “warm, gentle” character. He admitted, “In my last drama [Sungkyunkwan Scandal], I realized that it’s extremely difficult to immerse myself completely in the character. But the time I spent worrying intensely about the character was really happy and enjoyable. I’m excited to be able to show a different side of myself.”
Kang Hye-jung, the mostly-film actress (Welcome to Dongmakgol, Girl Friends) whom I loved in the quirky though horribly underrated Flowers For My Life in 2007 (3%-5% ratings, eep), is here in her first drama after her marriage to Tablo and the birth of their first child. She said, “The whole time I was reading the script, I found the careless Hee-joo amusing, and even nodded at some of the things she did that are similar to me. Hee-joo has the ability to make people feel better, like a pick-me-up.”
Kim Seung-woo plays an ambitious hotelier, ten years after playing one in the Hallyu drama Hotelier (with Yonsama and Song Yoon-ah). He was born to a poor family and toughened up along the way to seeking his goal of being number 1. Because he succeeded in that, he believes he can control life perfectly — an idea this drama will surely disabuse him of, I bet.
Ripley is set in the economic and cultural fashion market (which is a description I don’t fully understand) and takes place in a 21st-century downtown hotel. The themes it plays on are work and love, success and failure, and hidden ambition — told in a “conventional melodrama” format. It premieres May 30.

The second portraits for Kang Hye Jung and Kim Seung Woo are photoshop fails, honestly. They both looked so unnatural against their background, in contrast to their first portraits.
And Miss Ripley needs to eat. Her sel-cas are a lil worrying, to say the least.

That being said, I love the poster concept. Hopefully they will play that aspect of hiding behind masks really well. Looking forward to this drama since DB announced it. :D

I think it's perfect for Kang Hye Jung, it's reflect her personality. That despite all the lies (symbolized by the mask people), she still have a strength to smile (she is sooo adorable in that still).
I agree for Kim Seung Woo though. He didn't look manipulative enough.

oh, i thought i was first when i didnt see anyone comments yet when i opened the post
anyways, i dont know who i want to root for, yoochun or seungwoo...
both are heartthrobs (hey im not going to deny obvious hotness in both men!)
aside from hallyu star vs dilf-actor/star, im looking at their characters and not their real-life personality:
free-spirited or (seemingly) cold-hearted?
also, i still cant see how yoochun is playing a 32 year-old!! no matter how baby-face it is played up...

I don't think he is playing a 32 yr old. I have not seen any character description mentioning his character age. May be he's playing mid or late 20's.

i have this bizarre feeling that this drama won't deliver... the fabulously-looking stills and the real life story inspiring it are very dark and complex, but i think we are all setting ourselves up for something that won't be coming.
i see this being another typical (melo)drama set in a fast-paced white collar work environment. and i HIGHLY doubt that lee da hae's character will be a villainous criminal like the real-life character she is based on. the only twist i see this drama adding to the current drama landscape is that this will be a case of purposefully mistaken identity (like Lie to Me and Baby Faced Beauty where both tell white lies to get ahead) but without the comedy so much.
however, since everyone besides LDH is smiling in their character stills above...who knows.

This drama confuses the hell out of me...one minute I think its going to be dark, intense and filled with mystery with the whole conspiracy of Mrs. Ripley and then they show us these, with all the characters (besides Lee Da Hae herself) smiling brightly..
I have a feeling I'll come out of this one thinking it could have been so much more....sorta like Cinderella Sister and Mary Stayed Out All Night

Kang Hye Jung and Kim Seung Woo are only the 2 resons why i will watch this. Im really sorry for the fans but, I'm really not feeling Lee da Hae, she's the reason why CHuno is not too compeling for me to watch. And i still credit the succes of My Girl to the 2 lead guys. But i'm still hoping that i will be proven very very wrong (about her) here in Ripley.

Not going to lie, totally watching this for Kang Hye-Jung and her quirky voice/facial expressions.
There's something so drawing about her (even though I feel like she plays a similar character in, well, everything).
If it gets too creepy though, I'm going to drop it. I dont know what direction they're taking it but I hate tense stilted dramas almost as much as I hate crazy daily dramas.
I loved Story of a Man, so if it's like that= PURE WIN!
If it's creepy like Hon...nope, not watching. lol :D

Eek, I don't think they're going to go the Hon route.... Or I hope not. It's nice to see the love for Kang Hye-Jung here since I didn't know there were many people who liked her. She is quirky and all, but is it weird that for some reason I always thought she was really pretty? Maybe it is just because I loved the characters she has played and that colors the way I see her.
Alvina, have you seen the Happy Together episode where Tablo talks about how dramatic their fights (ergo, arguments) are? It's so funny. You get a glimpse of what she's like as a wife - so we don't get to see the real her, but we at least get a funny insight on a piece of who she is. ^^

kang hye jung looks so cute. she doesnt look like a mother at all. i think she can pass as a 20 years old girl. i do really LOVE her in Flowers of My Life, the drama was really underrated. I've watched Welcome To Dongmakgol, but i didnt remember seeing her in the movie.. I think it wasnt her.

Wow.. Lee da Hae needs to eat! pronto! I'm still hoping that this drama can bring her public image into positive range.
I think the only reason why I might want to watch this, is the controversial set-up in conjunction of Lee Da Hae's public image, and how the drama will play out. Full on evil, or forced-to-be-evil-due-to-a-slew-of-reasons? I hope they go for All Out Evil for Lee Da Hae. I'm sorta excited about this... hahaha if it's total evilness.

I'm an easygoing mouse but I really must say I think they cast the wrong Mickey in this show. For one thing, I've cheesecakes more experience than that Micky dude. I've been around for more than 50 years....and counting. I've got an extra E in my name. And I love MIss Lee Da Hae to cheesy pieces. She's so pretty and graceful. I know I'm on the short side and my ears and feet are kinda big. But I have a heart big enough to protect her from all the cats of this world. I'm trying to speak in a deep manly growl, but this dratted voice of mine just keeps squeaking! Anyone know a good doc who can makeover my vocals? Appreciate it. Thanks. I'm real polite as you can see. I always remember to say thanks and thank you. My mama, Mrs Milfred Mouse, always said a true gentlemouse must always mind his manners.

LOL. Still, you're both adorable - in your own cute ways. Hey, Micky without the 'e' has lured lots of k-drama fans into k-pop, and/or vice-versa(?), even if he's not as old nor as well-known as you. And I love your squeaky voice! Don't go under the knife. You won't be Mickey anymore without that...
Can we connive? I say we snatch the leads; you be with Lee Dahae and I with Park Yoochun. Whaddayasay?
I have a question: are you immortal or something? Your creator died ages ago and you're still around! Most mice would've been in animal heaven or something. I can't decide whether to go with 'awesome' or 'creepy'...
Okay, I'm just going nuts over nothing. Still hasn't made up my mind/feelings with this drama, nor do I have expectations yet. Maybe I should try an episode first before ... whatever.
Thanks for the updates, JB.

Agree! Some people are too proud. Stereotypes of foreigners are common in every country.
Otherwise I would be deep hurt when someone reduce my country to Oktoberfest, Bavaria and Nazi. Especially the last one since nowhere other in Europe Nazi symbols are serious law contravention or Nazis aren't part of respected goverment. But we accept that as part of our history and make fun of the Bavarians :D.
So I think all "pride hurt" people should grow up. When did they the same about foreigners too? We all aren't angels.
