Lie To Me: Episode 8 Open Thread

This episode in a nutshell (or, as I like to think of it, the weecap): Ah-jung takes care of Ki-joon when he’s sick (food-poisoned by her leftovers). She’s miffed when he doesn’t reply to her text, so Ki-joon admits that he didn’t know how to reply — if he said he was still sick, she’d worry, but if he said he was better, he was afraid she wouldn’t come to see him. Aw. He plays a joke on her by shaking her Coke behind her back, which causes it to explode, leading to a mini-food fight, pounding hearts, and an acknowledgement of their attraction. (Ah-jung: “Is this acting, or is this for real?” Ki-joon: “For real.”)

Alas, K-dramas never allow our happy couple to be happy very long before mucking up the works. Two complicators: Sang-hee and Auntie CEO. Sang-hee gets pissy to see the growing rapport between Ah-jung and Ki-joon, and tells her repeatedly that she’s misreading the situation. He tells his brother he’s really, truly over Yoon-ju and that hyung should be happy with her — his way of pushing his brother away from Ah-jung, whom he’s starting to like.

On the other hand, Auntie CEO steps in get rid of Yoon-ju, despite professing to liking her very much, because everybody in this drama thinks Sang-hee’s a poor, feeble-hearted child incapable of mature reasoning or of handling the disappointment of not getting the girl. DUDE. He may be your baby brother, but he’s still a grown-ass person. Let him deal. So Aunt calls them all together and reveals that Ki-joon and Ah-jung are secretly married. Ki-joon freaks out, chases Yoon-ju out (leaving Ah-jung behind), and reconciles with her. Phew! Boy gets around.

Ah-jung imagines the kissy reunion, is heartbroken and withdraws, blaming the lie on herself and telling the reunited couple that she’s happy for them, then bawls her heart out. And then she goes to So-ran — who has just heard that Ah-jung knows of her marital woes — and cops to the lie. Finally!

Comments: The lie is out — thank god! They’ve gotten about as much mileage out of it as can be reasonably expected, especially since the Chinese investors have now returned home. I actually think there’s a fun drama in here, but the problem is that it’s padded with so much useless filler material that the interesting stuff gets watered down and dragged out, thereby smothering what life the drama does have. (Triple-mixed-metaphor, woo!) It’s too bad that there’s so very little plot to keep the pace moving, and despite my great liking for the leads, there’s only so much dead weight that can be carried by chemistry alone.

I’m curious to see how the story changes after this — and hope that it doesn’t go off into a totally weird direction because the writer’s run out of ideas (I’m thinking I Am Legend, which turned into a different, much more tedious drama halfway through). I’m hopeful that with the lie now out in the open, we’ll finally make some narrative progress…although a part of me is nervous that it’ll just be angst city as the golden couple gets back together.

To be honest, I can’t even tell you what a relief it was to be able to watch Episodes 7 and 8 without the burden of recaps. It helps that this week’s episodes were better than last week’s, which at some points had me banging my head against my desk with frustration. But it’s also freeing to not be stuck having to recap the many boring filler scenes — the parental love triangle, the co-workers, So-ran’s tirades, which used to be fun but which are now getting tiresome, Sang-hee’s hot-and-cold angsting — because we all know that we’re basically just watching this drama for two reasons: Yoon Eun-hye and Kang Ji-hwan.

I said "WOW" to the kiss too. I'm super glad because YEH is a brave kiser. I'm so sick and tired watching Kdrama kissing scene where they just stand there and like a dead cold fish kissing a wall. Of course KJH is awesome too. More kisses please, (KJH & YEH only )

I concur, plus I'd like to add Jang Geun-suk has been waiting for someone like YEH to pair up swap amylase with. Yeah, that's sharing human saliva peeps. M-mmmmmm~ However, I doubt that may actually happen, YEH x JGS, 'cos YEH is too strong of an actress to pair w/ JGS unless he goes on steroids or something in that freak of nature.

Why did I jump into that? o , 0"

Anyways..................... 'C O L A K I S S' ............... (lingers).

Haha, I love JGS with all my heart, but I have to agree with you on that one. Although, they both do the intense-emotions-overflowing unwavering stare sooo well. I'd pay to watch them just looking at each other for a while.

LOL When I saw the 2 of them kiss my first thought was here the Drama God wants girlfriday to keep recapping this show.

BTW, I think Sang Hee wants to reconcile his brother and the girl (whose name I refuse to remember), to make up for his past mistake hence he was mad when he saw Ki Hoon & Ah Jung together, not because of his growing attraction to Ah Jung. Ok maybe 80-20? If anything I don't think his attraction to Ah Jung growing at all.

"because we all know that we’re basically just watching this drama for two reasons: Yoon Eun-hye and Kang Ji-hwan."

big word, JB.

that's why i'm actually dreading the second half of this drama. if it'll be angst-central and then last ep of the couple getting together, i'm breaking up with this show. gah...i just want to see YEH and KJH stare/kiss/make-out/etc without the burden of having to watch the side characters...is that too much to ask? i'm so shallow like that. heh.

(seriously, why is everyone else so snooze-worthy in this show? or is it that YEH-KJH are just so electrifying together everything else pales in comparison?)

also, is anyone else confused by how the OTP went from "i-can't-get-my-hands-off-you" to being totally blase about it after their sizzling cola kiss? i mean, they were even holding hands while he was talking on the phone and cut to the next scene, she is walking out and he is driving his car? *shakes head*

anyways, will not over-analyze. will enjoy the kisses. the ice cream. I LOVE ICE CREAM. ;)

p.s. thanks JB and GF for this open thread.

One True Pairing (???)

I was wondering about that myself.

0

Required fields are marked *

Or "only true pairing." I've heard it used in the context that someone has decided that only two certain people should be allowed to be a couple ("pairing"), rejecting all other characters (haha, and sometimes even reality). I.e. In Harry Potter, Hermione and Draco...
There's also OTP in the sense that a show has decided that certain people should end up together, like Ki-Joon and Ah-Jung, instead of Sang-hee and Ah-jung. But I think this meaning isn't used as often.
Hope that helps clarify! :)

"gah…i just want to see YEH and KJH stare/kiss/make-out/etc without the burden of having to watch the side characters…is that too much to ask? i’m so shallow like that. heh."
In terms of this drama it's perfectly acceptable to be shallow-especially with all the pretty to stare at. In fact, it's pretty much the only way to go about viewing it.

Thank you Javabeans :)

So much happened in this episode!!! Personnaly, I won't complain that the pace is too slow now, because today's episode felt like the real drama finally began.

Yoon Eun Hye is such a good actress especially when it comes to her crying scenes! I can really feel her pain and her sincerity. In fact, when she cried in her car and at the end, I cried with her too. I think that I even cried more than her lol. This is the first time that I cried while watching this drama and I am now 100% emotionally invested in this drama. I LOVED today’s episode (even though I hated to see Ki Joon and Yoon Joo together.) The Cola kiss left me with no words. It was amaaaazing. Ah Jung’s pain was very relatable. I feel for her. (*I’ll even punch Ki Joon for her ^^*)

I really hope that now that there are no more lies between Ah Jung and Soo Ran, they can rely on each other and be genuinely good friends. Soo Ran can even help Ah Jun make Yoon Joo go away with her scaryness bwahahaha. Now, I'm I hoping for too much?

I’m looking forward to next week’s episode and to see how Ki Joon will make up for all the pain/confusion/sadness that he put Ah Jung through.

Lie To Me fighting!

P.-S: I love the Ice Ceam song! I hope that they will release the official version of Yoon Eun hye and Kang Ji Hwan's :)

I thought I was the only one who was kindve hoping for So Ran and Ah Jung To be friends, atleast for a little, after the lie came out. I really wanna know why Soo Ran is so jealous of Ah Jung, because that is what she really is.

The Ice cream song is just really starting to stick with me too. I call it the YEH effect. She just makes everything stick. heheh

I like the Weecaps Javabeans. I misjudge how effective it could be...sorry!! :) Although I like your recaps much better, I guess I was selfish in thinking that you dont need a break once in a while. Glad you came up with this!

Required fields are marked *

I am not sure if my interpretation is right about So Ran, but this is what I think… So Ran is so guilty that she stole Ah Jung's crush that she just has to show that she is the happier one. To cover her guilt, she has to be the 'stronger' and 'better', or it would seem she has made the wrong choice to steal the guy and damage the friendship!

I cried too..... I felt so sad watching her cry and heartbroken.

After AJ left SR's house after she told the truth, I was hoping that SR was gonna run after her and they can hug it out and cry on the street together.

AJ really needs a friend. She doesn't have a solid friend in this drama. She's always going around with other people instead of going to one person when she's feeling sad. First, it was SH. Then KJ and then her officemates (even though they don't know why).

I just noticed something wrong in your mini recap. Ki Joon DIDN'T KISS Yoon Joo on the beach. He only hugged her. Thank god. Or else, I would've trown something at my laptop lol.

The kissing scene was Ah Jung's dream (you can notice it because the lighting was brighter indicating that it wasn't reality) and also they showed Ah Jung waking up right after KJ and YJ "kiss".

Well if you notice he didn't quite hug her either...I think his love for that annoying pretty hair, long legs girl isn't as strong as before, he mostly just want to protect her because she's always hurts/ cries/ walking in the park with her shoes off so that her leg got cut but behind him she was completely able to hold her own against Aunty CEO. The girl know her crafts I give her that.

I don't think KJ kissed YJ at the beach, it was just AJ's dream when she dozed off in her bedroom. Actually KJ did not even hug YJ back.

What about the preview though? The two little kids, I assume one is little KJ and the other is little AJ in school right?

Aww, a weecap! I'm glad you're doing at least this, because as tiring as recaps must be I still like to see your general thoughts on the episodes, which is the whole reason I read the recaps anyway, to be honest. If I only wanted a play by play of the entire episode I would just wait a few hours for subs and watch it.

I think I prefer weecaps/open threads, actually, especially for less weighty dramas like this, it gives less of the episode away while getting right down to the stuff that actually matters. Plus, far less work for you as recappers.

I wouldn't say no to it becoming a more regular thing for future series that don't maybe merit the full recap treatment. :)

I'm glad the beach kiss thing was just imagination. But poor AJ, she's gonna be getting really confused with this all.

I do think that somehow, SoRan and Ahjung are going to become allies. Maybe that will be SoRan's redemption.

The other girl YJ, sad to say, is not believable to be playing the girl who got two brothers smitten for her. She doesn't have any appeal to me at all, even on the screen. Can't eclipse YEH's presence on screen.

Yaaay!!! I just want to say THANK YOU so much for posting this weecap. This is the first time I am submitting a comment even though I follow your website religiously. I love how insightful your recaps are and I love that analysis and thought you put into it. I sometimes watch the episode while reading your recap because I want to know if you're fangirling over the same thing or what you (JB/GF) thought of a certain thing. I love this new weecap format for Lie To Me because you are right, there are so much boring stuff to wade through. But I heart YEH...she is just pure charisma and her chemistry with KJH is just pure smex.

although, am I the only one that feels that when KJH is trying to be cute (like during housewarming when he's calling everyone to the table and shakes his hips a little) that he sometimes comes across a little drag queenish? *runs and hides*...please don't kill me! i think the director just tells all the actors and actresses in this drama to go ahead and have a good time. thats why we get all the out of whack acting like hip shaking. i personally thot the scene where Soran beat the shit out of her hubby was quite good fun hahah. it really does feel like all of them are just having fun acting in this drama.

Well, he DID do Rocky Horror Picture Show... plus I think a lot of KJH's acting is rooted in theater so movements are slightly more exaggerated (like how he lifts and turns his head first before turning full 95-degrees to walk a certain direction... see the scene where he meets Ah Jung at the cafe after the first near-kiss).

Thanks for the weecap, JB! It was a good choice to drop a full recap. I actually found myself skimming over the last full recap due to all the filler nonsense Show was/is packing in.

Just watched this ep Raw - I think it kind of says a lot when someone like me who understands only a smattering of Korean could pretty much figure out what was happening. Won't be able to do that for City Hunter, Greatest/Best Love or Miss Ripley - these are where your full recaps are totally appreciated.

I've noticed that there are lots of opinion polls concerning Korean matters. Here's one for LTM: Sang Hee, younger brother extraordinaire, is a Total Dick and is getting "dickier" by the episode! Agree? Disagree?

Mr. Sweet Charming Kind & Funny has taken a turn for the worst. The sympathy bus has left for this one. (Sang Hee should hook a ride on said bus over to Romance Town. He'd fit right in.)

The Cola Kiss was a fun watch - mostly due to the agile mouth-work of our leading lady. I wonder if her leading men look forward to kissing scenes with her? She doesn't hold back (and that's a GOOD thing! Heh). :)

not sure how the 2nd half of this drama would be. But that KOLA kiss is the hottest kiss in Kdrama, hands down!

The famous director Green Rose PD Kim Soo Ryong took over from episode 7. His specialty is the emotional drama.
He is head director from episode 7, things will change

Assistant PD of Secret Garden director Kwon Hyuk Chan was in charge for ep 1~6 cause his specialty was more on comedy, so now that it's the emotional aspect PD Kim Soo Ryong took over what a big difference, yah! T

I'm with you. Sam Soon did it waaaay better - but that whole 'undeniable chemistry torn apart by ex-lover misplaced by cruel twist of fate' thing is unhappily familiar. Damn tragic ex-lovers.

As much as I love KJH, his character Kijoon is killing me. HE IS SUCH A FLAKE!!!

Oh my god seriously.

But so true, KJH and YEH = why I am watching this drama still.

You feel better after dropping the recaps, and I feel better after dropping this drama. It's the circle of life!

Sadly, even my love for Kang Ji Hwan and Yoon Eun Hye couldn't keep me invested in this story... and for that, the blame lies solely with its writer. To be frank, their entire relationship felt forced and unrealistic - like it was catering to fan-service and banking on the actor's chemistry alone, rather than evolving naturally from an actual "plot" (and here, I use that term loosely).

Take Coffee Prince for example. We loved the make-out sessions there because it evolved naturally/believably from the drama's inherent conflicts - it even forced a man to examine his own sexuality, and challenge the very concept of love. THAT'S the beauty of chemistry. It's something that is earned through sufficient build-up - through the use of plot and character development.

Not through make-out sessions that have no clear function other than to show how hot a couple is together. I mean, one moment KJ's pining for his ex, the next, he's eying AJ like she's air itself, and he needs her to breathe! It's! So! Dramatic! How can we possibly take it seriously?

Even their near kiss on the bench had me nearly keeling over. All I could think was, "She JUST threw up on you - and you think the mood is right to KISS?!" They're forcing this... and it makes all the legitimate bonding moments they do share feel disingenuous *because* it's built on a false foundation.

So needless to say, no amount of kissing with cola, or going temporarily insane with lust in front of a roomful of bare acquaintances is going to make me swoon or buy into this OTP...

I. Am. Done.

And... now that I got that off my chest, I'm ready for the flames, lol.

You just read my mind. I agree with every word. It feels forced.
Thats why the kisses are good but I dont feel excited about them. Its like watching a couple in the street. What you said about The Coffee Prince its true. The kiss, the one in episode 10 (yes, i know it by episode) its good but its better because all the things that are related to kiss.

Im not dropping it yet, my resistance is bigger than I thought. Plus I have Park Hoon and some funny scenes with Kang Ji-hwan

Nah, you pretty much hit it exactly.

The writing/dialogue for "LTM" absolutely stinks (even worse than "Secret Garden").

I don't see the "chemistry" btwn KJH and YEH b/c who can take their characters' relationship seriously? (Same w/ HB and HJW in "SG".)

The best part, thus far, was the little bit of the relationship that we got to see btwn the 2 brothers - the rest has been a complete waste (which is a pity since there was such high hopes for this drama due to the 2 leads).

"Best Love" has everything this rom-com lacks.

Really, no point in re-capping this dreck.

Now, I really hope YEH picks her next project more wisely (yeah, loyalty's good and all that, but not when it negatively impacts one's career).

Its true in some ways or in so many ways. I know it is a flawed drama. But can you not over analyze..it is a drama after all. A make believe reality that should not be taken seriously. Plus, give it a chance, they change the director already. Can you at least give it a second chance? The next episodes will see flashbacks that will make us understand more about each character (character building--like what they did with 49 days). That's all ^_^

I don't think being logical is too much to ask of a drama. And more flashbacks? The writer can't even make the characters' actions in the present make sense; I don't think any amount of flashbacks would help develop these pitiful characters.

Forgive her, she's still new. She'll probably do better on her next drama.

That doesn't excuse the CRAPPY writing.

It's not like the premise in "Coffee Prince" or "My Princess" (nevermind "MGIAG") were believable, but the lead characters and their relationships were ibelievable and totally engaging in those rom-coms.

Plus, they were good for a lot of laughs due to the witty/fun dialogue - here, there's no romance or comedy - so that makes for a crappy rom-com.

I don't think it's a case of over-analyzing; rather, it's an honest attempt to understand why something does or doesn't work.

And for me, the cons far outweighed the pros.

So no, I won't be giving this a second chance. If I couldn't get behind this OTP when they were falling in love - there's no way I'm going to enjoy watching them angst away as they're "tragically" torn apart. The fact that I made it through the first seven episodes is a testament to how much I love and respect these actors... I just can't show the same courtesy to its writer.

But, by all means, continue enjoying the show. I won't hold it against you. ;)

I thought the same thing... then I realized my american point of view may find it weird, but Korean culture (or at least Kdrama culture) seems to take body functions in stride.

I don't think I've ever seen a character in a Kdrama gag while his buddy is throwing up or sitting on the potty.

I don't necessarily think it's a cultural thing though - I can see those type of scenes and be unaffected, despite being American.

Then again, there's a *huge* difference between holding someone's hair back while they're throwing up, and asking someone if they wanna swap spit immediately after. And though the potty and fart jokes may run rampant in lots of k-drama's... I have yet to seen the sexy-vomitus-kiss taking the world by storm, lol.

That's gross in any language and culture.

"Even their near kiss on the bench had me nearly keeling over. All I could think was, “She JUST threw up on you – and you think the mood is right to KISS?!”

for the life of me i can't imagine why anyone would want to kiss someone who just threw up. puke smells bad, puke would definitely taste horrible.

i feel so bad for YEH.

with all the illogical kisses in this drama so far, i feel as if YEH have prostituted herself for the sake of ratings with the writer and the whole production team as her pimps.

if she wants to be taken seriously as an actress she has to choose roles that will challenge her acting ability not her kissing ability.

I love her so much in CP, i consider MFL was a step back and that she would learn a big lesson in choosing roles from that fiasco. But it seems she and whoever are managing her career didn't learn anything from her MFL experience because i see LTM as a giant leap backwards for YEH.

LTM is a total waste of her talent, but i still like her a lot so i will still wish her the best in her future projects.

If you look at her character, this is a character that has some substance vs. the average K-drama heroine. She is smart and has a good job. She has flaws like every human being, but she is not your average heroin in distress who needs to be saved. While their relationship could be less forced, we can also argue that unlike most K-dramas, they in fact started to date and give each other a chance. By no means I'm in love with this drama, but I think that maybe she read the synopsis and character description and liked it. I don't think actors know the path that the drama is going until they already sing up for the drama.

Hmmm. Don't know if I should laugh or cry when I read this. Okay. I'll just disagree, period.

"She has flaws like every human being, but she is not your average heroin in distress who needs to be saved."

And what do you call what Sanghee has been doing? Just "helping" her out, huh?
