Jung Yong-hwa goes from nice guy to rude hero

Jung Yong-hwa became known for playing the nice guy in You’re Beautiful, where he fell for the girl, helped her as much as he could, and then had to watch her fall for his (haughty, cold-seeming) best buddy. For his first leading role, in the upcoming MBC musical-themed drama You’ve Fallen For Me, he sheds his gentle “Shin-woo hyung” image to play the cocky lead vocalist of a band of pretty boys.

Hmm… that sounds familiar… If you can’t beat ’em, turn into ’em? The thinking must go: If I turn into a Hwang Tae-kyung type, I’ll finally win Park Shin-hye’s favor. I guess to get the girl in K-dramaland, you’ve got to turn into a rude bastard. SIGH.

It’s one trend I’ll be happy to see the back of, and not just ’cause it’s romanticizing something that’s irritating in real life, but also since it’s just such a damn cliché at this point. A crutch, a hackneyed plot point. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed our bastardish heroes — the Hwang Tae-kyungs, the Gu Jun-pyos, the Dokko Jins — but haven’t we gotten as much mileage out of The Darcy as we can at this point, which should enable us to move on to greener (and kinder) pastures?

Jung said, “When I first got the script, I thought that [the character] Lee Shin was extremely uptight and indifferent, but as I get more familiar with the character, I see that Lee Shin is just not interested in things outside of music and therefore just seems cold. When you see what he’s like on the inside, he’s got a pretty warm and attentive side too, and he’s an appealing character.”

The youth melodrama series (which suggests it’s not a rom-com) follows Best Love and premieres on June 29.

Sick of the rude, arrogant heroes but Sam Dong was one annoying character. Let's not make that the new stereotypical lead.

Based on the definition of Darcy character I don't think Domyoji is this kind of character. He's unhuman, pretty immature, strong (not a sissy like disaster Jun pyo).

actually, i wouldn't mind the darcy types...if the girls weren't so DUMB!

i mean, every time i watch these types of dramas, the girls are always so dim-witted, running while crying to the mean, cold guys whenever there was trouble.

in BOF, it was that way, but i couldn't stand the whole series..so i dropped it.

this is why i can't wait for the skip beat drama (it's taiwan though, i think) ...maybe they'll add some variety into this pool of sameness.

So what I want to talk about is Yong Hwa and the whole cold-hearted cliched theme of dramas.

1. It's a drama, it's practically expected. Yes, I am sick of it like all of you are, but I think what makes it interesting is not the theme itself but the portrayal of the characters and the love triangle (if there is one) and the whole theme of it, which is what makes me want to watch these kind of dramas. In this drama, this cold-hearted guy theme is different. He's not cold-hearted, he's just uninterested in things that don't concern music or his family which he shows to love, so it doesn't really matter to him. So kudos for this drama ^^

2. Yong Hwa = not the greatest actor. I'll admit I'm quite biased with Yong Hwa ever since I watched YB & listened to his music. No, he's not such a great actor as... well I haven't watched that many K-Dramas but I still know his acting was pretty dry and kind of like a cardboard, but we can't blame the fact that it was his first drama so props to him. I don't think it was that bad for him to portray a sad character, but we all know he should have shown a little more emotion. And same with this drama, but he's improved. I just think he's a little shy in front of the camera, ya know? But when it comes to music, it's natural.

Now the thing with idols becoming stars... Isn't it the same as stars becoming idols in the US? I don't really think it's their choice but their label's choice to promote them. Sure, we CAN say that they should at least give these guys a few lessons on how to act, but it's not that bad. I think these people really do work hard though because idols have to go through training to get where they are, even if they already have talent. They're still pushed to become better than what they are, which is smart so props to them. And maybe acting classes can't be pushed into their busy schedules? Who knows? So I think we shouldn't be so pushy about it. But to each his/her own.

One thing I would love to see is the nice guy winning in the love triangle, like sheesh. You can't compare it to DH because Taecyon didn't play a mean character. If anything, Sam Dong was really annoying but really straightforward and sweet. And plus, Hye Mi was the mean girl turning into the sweet girl. So *shrugs*

So to recap: a less typical love triangle, a little change in cold characters and theme, and idols -> actors? Accept it a little?

its the trend nowadays that idols are becoming actors doesn't that help us? I mean to say that people might be crazy for the idols and if they come in these dramas its actually good, fans will be more happy.

Apart from that i think he is a reallly good actor.

i am not an expert in acting but i can see a potential in one actor... and that's what i see in yonghwa..he may not be the best there is out there but i like what i see most of the time... given the proper training and coaching, i think he will go a long way far better than other idols acting or actors going into singing... what i like about his acting is that i don't see someone acting at all (most of the time). his natural emotions (though others see it as bland) sometimes show that it doesn't seem he is acting at all and that makes his character "relatable", more realistic.

give him some time, more life experiences and i am sure yonghwa will prove to other peeps here that little talent + hard work = good acting.
