49 Days: Episode 16

Ahhh, what a satisfying episode! It’s essentially an episode of payoffs, which is great when you have a drama so chock-full of secrets, plots, and multiple layers of truth and discovery. The worst dramas are the ones where there’s one big secret at the beginning, and the drama’s all about that same secret the whole way through. Here, things keep evolving, so we’re on the hook, just desperate for another crumb, to see how each new setup pays off. And they all just happen to come to a head in this one. (To girlfriday: Neener neener!)

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Oh, man. So the Scheduler/Yi-soo finally remembers Yi-kyung, and rips our hearts out in the process. His pain is palpable as he takes in her haggard face and asks, “Why do you look like this? What have you done to yourself?” Ji-hyun is unnerved and reminds him that she’s Ji-hyun, which takes him out of his memory.

Yi-soo wonders at the photo found in Yi-kyung’s hotel locker, because he’s never seen it before. It makes one puzzle piece fall into place for him, and he breaks down sobbing, realizing, “So that’s why Yi-kyung…”

A flashback gives us a rounder picture of their argument: Yi-kyung had broached a topic they’d argued about many times before, only today she’s clutching the photo in her hands (he doesn’t see it). She’d accepted that he moved out into his studio to pursue music, but now suspects he’s using music as an excuse to cover up for a new girlfriend, while he hears her words as nagging mistrust when he’d repeatedly told her that he’s not fooling around.

Finally, Yi-soo had declared, “I’m sick of it! I’m sick of you. The thought of marrying you feels suffocating! Thinking of spending the next 30, 40 years with you like I’ve spent the last 18 — it’s horrifying.”

Oh, Scheduler. How could you? He’d yelled, “How is it you never change? How can you be exactly the same as you were at age 5?”

After that blowup, he’d headed away for a few weeks to perform with the band, working construction in the daytime. His pissiness eventually faded and he’d bought a set of couple rings, which he had engraved, “S love K.” It’s the same thing printed on his bike, which means, Yi-Soo loves Yi-Kyung.

On his way back to Seoul, like a lovesick fool he’d been looking at the rings while riding his bike, thinking of their reconciliation. Only, well, we already know the story. One collision with a truck later and he’d been twitching on the ground, looking at his rings and flashing back to all the happy times in his final moments. Oh my god, this is so sad. Can’t see my screen. Need a tissue.

So what about that photo? Yi-soo realizes that the girl had taken it while he slept, and wants to explain himself to Yi-kyung right away. Except…something feels weird. Why did he recover his memory? (As in, why was he allowed to retrieve it?)

He calls his reaper sunbae to ask angrily how he could’ve let Yi-kyung live like this for five years, and what he gets in response is a shrill ringing tone — a summons. With that, he sends Ji-hyun away, and I love that his send-off — the very common, everyday “take care” — is extra meaningful today, since it literally means, “Take care of your body.”

On her way home, Ji-hyun wonders if there’s such a thing as truth that can’t be misunderstood. She had loved her best friend, but In-jung said she’d been blissfully ignorant. Yi-soo called his feelings love, but Yi-kyung believed he’d changed his mind. “How can you convey feelings that aren’t seen?”

In-jung turns to a shaman for advice, which cracks me up for some reason although I suppose it should make sense within this drama’s scope. At least, more than incompetent psychiatrists who make diagnoses about past lives and have no understanding of doctor-patient confidentiality.

The shaman returns bad news, saying that In-jung’s stuck in a bind, all right. But at least the girl didn’t really die, because she’d have haunted her forever then. The only way for her to fix this is to chuck the soul out of her host body. But how?

At Heaven, the ridiculous lovebirds (Manager Oh and his wife) have a spat, because wifey is frustrated with her husband’s refusal to tell her what he’s talking about with Kang that is so secretive. She’s been nagging for a while, but he has put his foot down, and now she feels their marital trust is threatened. Finally she walks away and he breaks down, saying that he has an important reason for doing it, and that he’s just as miserable.

Wifey can’t stand to see him crying, and rushes back to his side. She explains to a just-arrived Kang, “He must really love me to cry like this.”

Bingo!

That sparks an idea in Kang’s brain, and he recalls how Ji-hyun had clutched her pendant every time he’d insisted she was Ji-hyun. The pendant was in the shape of a tear…and she needs proof of a person’s love…

Wifey and Su-jin both come to the same conclusion to their “How do you show proof of love?” puzzle, confirming his hunch. So when Ji-hyun arrives, he steals (not-so-) surreptitious looks at the pendant, noticing that it looks different than before.

He asks where she bought the pendant, why it changed, and when she swapped them. That puts Ji-hyun on her guard, especially when he tests the waters by mentioning that the thing inside looks like a teardrop, too. But he plays dumb (the sly fox is gettin’ good at that) and says that it’s a simple question that normal people can ask.

Ji-hyun answers cautiously that it changed on the day she submitted her resignation, and Kang thinks back to that day…when he raced to the hospital…and cried. He thinks to himself, “Then is that…my tear?”

Omg! Way to put two and two together! (Finally somebody does!) Hallelujah for smart people!

Ji-hyun wonders why he’s so interested in all this, and he explains, “That day, I was so upset that you’d turned in your resignation that I visited my friend Ji-hyun in the hospital, and cried a little.” (EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!)

Ji-hyun is stunned, and wonders to herself, “Kang-ah, so it was you?”

Tears fill her eyes and he asks why, to which she says, “It’s because I’m so thankful.” Seeing that she clutches her necklace in fear, Kang hurriedly sends her back to work.

Min-ho has another meeting with his Haemido cohort at rival company, back on track to carry out his evil plan. This time he has no intention of getting cold feet and second-guessing his scheme once they put things into motion.

Now that Kang has figured out a huge missing piece of the Ji-hyun Is a Ghost puzzle, he’s ready to jump into action too. One of the companies involved in this whole Haemido issue is in the States, so Kang is ready to chuck his own pride aside to ask his own father for help. Kang-ah! When did you get so mature and hot? (Okay, you were always hot.)

Plus, while they know that tears are the key, they still need to figure out how to acquire them. Manager Oh offers to get to work on that, and also suggests that Kang try to acquaint himself with the real Yi-kyung, in case she notices him hanging around and feels creepy about it. At least someone finally addresses the stalking-is-creepy issue.

Ji-hyun’s about to go meet Min-ho outside, and Kang grabs her arm to stop her, saying that there’s nothing she can do about this situation as Song Yi-kyung. I love that they’re both starting to talk about the situation indirectly, as though they’ve tacitly decided to keep pretending she’s Yi-kyung and that Kang knows nothing, but that it’s clear in every exchange that both know more than that.

Ji-hyun assures Kang that she’ll come back to him after sending Min-ho away, so he reluctantly backs off.

Min-ho fumes, wanting Yi-kyung to quit her job here, and asks why she won’t. Ji-hyun answers levelly, “Because there’s somebody I like here.” (Omo omo!) She adds, “So don’t call me anymore. I don’t want to see you again.” (Omona sesangae!)

Min-ho grabs her arm to stop her, and I keep thinking that Ji-hyun is getting so spun around in this drama — Kang! Min-ho! Kang! Min-ho! — that she’s generating her own gravity.

He asks her in a hurt voice, “What was I to you? Didn’t you like me?” and I love that he’s got tears in his eyes. It’s just so satisfying. She returns, “Nope. Not for one moment. Although I may have fooled myself into thinking I did — just like you’re fooling yourself now.”

Kang can’t hold back any longer and comes forward to pull Ji-hyun away from Min-ho, and he orders his hyung to stay away from her and his restaurant. Min-ho asks, “Was it Ji-hyun?” which stops them all in their tracks. “You wanted to find a woman when you returned to Korea. Was it Ji-hyun?”

Kang merely says they were once close enough to talk about stuff like that, and takes Ji-hyun away.

In the car, Ji-hyun sees that Kang is still worked up, and assures him that she’d told Min-ho off. He hadn’t heard their conversation, so this relieves him considerably, and he tells her not to go around alone at night anymore, as he’ll drive her home. She accepts, and adds that it’s great for her, as she doesn’t have many days left. The implication isn’t lost on him.

She looks at him and sadly wonders why it took her so long to realize all this about Kang. (Seriously!)

That night, Yi-kyung wakes up and Ji-hyun greets her happily to “inform” her that the Scheduler has remembered her. There’s a moment when it seems like Yi-kyung can hear her, and Ji-hyun tests it out, calling softly, “Unniiii.” But Yi-kyung doesn’t react, so Ji-hyun continues talking, assuring Yi-kyung that she was dearly loved by Yi-soo.

And yet…Yi-kyung wonders to herself, “How does she know Yi-soo?” Ohhhhhhh my god. She can hear?!

When Yi-kyung leaves for work, Yi-soo follows just behind her, his feet in step with hers, and he lights the darkened street as she walks by. Aw, that brings a tear to my eye — this idea that your loved ones continue to love you after they’re gone, and sometimes even light your way.

He watches her work, recalling her words that she stopped trusting people after Yi-soo abandoned her, and says, “I’m sorry.”

Which she hears.

(Seriously, this episode is kinda blowing my mind. So much good stuff!)

Yi-kyung clutches her chest like she’s in pain, and Yi-soo holds himself back from going to her. Just then, Kang enters the cafe — there’s a nice juxtaposition of him, face to face with Yi-soo, both of them loving this woman in different forms — and asks if she’s okay.

There’s a momentary flicker in Yi-kyung’s eyes (it makes me wonder if she recalls his name instinctually too), but they carry out this transaction like a normal employee-customer scene.

Which wouldn’t be so weird, if only they didn’t have an observer sitting in the cafe — In-jung, who is keeping an eye on Yi-kyung and thus puzzled at Kang’s behavior. (Also, In-jung? You may be the least creepy stalker in this drama, but you surely win the award for Most Skulking and Most Conveniently Overheard Conversations. Maybe you’d have a happier life if you spent more of it, oh, being happy with your life rather than holding other people’s happinesses against them. Just a thought.)

As Kang leaves, he files away the fact that she doesn’t seem to remember him at all. Except that Yi-kyung’s eyes dart back and forth, telling us that’s not the whole story.

Back in Yi-kyung’s apartment, Ji-hyun waits, her spirit energy waning. Yi-soo comes back to report the results of his consultation with the Powers That Be, having requested to see Yi-kyung with his own appearance. Alas, they’ve issued a firm denial, and forbid him to interfere in Yi-kyung’s life whatsoever. They had nothing to do with his retrieved memory, which is instead a result of Ji-hyun putting him in constant contact with her. (Which seems like flimsy reasoning given the fact that Yi-soo was, yunno, assigned to this case.)

Yi-soo tells her he has to talk to Yi-kyung, so Ji-hyun had better watch how she uses her body in her remaining time. “If you cause harm to our Yi-kyung, you’re dead.” It’s another sentiment he means in both the literal and figurative senses.

In the morning, a hungover Min-ho has an unwelcome guest: In-jung, who comes in acting like the girlfriend she isn’t anymore, having prepared breakfast for him. He asks why, and she answers that she’s the only person who’d do this for him. Which is true, and also sad.

In-jung tells him that he wouldn’t have been able to have Yi-kyung even if Yi-kyung weren’t inhabited by Ji-hyun’s spirit (which she says with a completely straight face), because he can’t get rid of In-jung. Why does that sound like a threat?

In-jung tells him that Kang also knows that Yi-kyung is really Ji-hyun, and hints that they can get rid of the spirit/host situation somehow.

When she gets back home, Seo-woo tells her that she wants to live separately now, which is fantastic. I love that Seo-woo — who was so marginal and blind to the truth for so long — has no hesitation over who’s right and who’s wrong, and that she’s decisive now that she knows the truth. I’m tired of situations where the friend waffles, or makes excuses, and it’s so refreshing that she sizes up the situation and calls In-jung out for being a horrible person. She’s totally made up for her episodes of placidity.

In-jung pleads for her chance to explain, but Seo-woo tells her that in the aftermath of the accident, she’d seen In-jung’s grief and felt guilty, that “In-jung was truly her friend — I must have a fake friend” because in comparison, her sadness didn’t seem to measure up. Yet now she sees it was an act.

In-jung admits that she was jealous, “But Ji-hyun’s someone who has everything even in death.” Oh, puh-leeeeeease. That’s like arguing over pennies. In hell. (Seriously, what’s the point?)

She pulls out her last dastardly card: “You don’t know that Kang likes Ji-hyun, do you?” She adds that Yi-kyung is Ji-hyun’s friend, and it’s because he’s in love with Ji-hyun that he’s taking care of Yi-kyung. “So how do you feel now? Do you still like her unconditionally?”

Ji-hyun thinks of the other 49er she’d met, and how he’d wished he could do more for his loved ones before his time ran out. She writes a list of people to whom she can write thank-you letters, and crosses In-jung off that list.

Ji-hyun realizes that if her tear came from Kang, that means Seo-woo hasn’t shed one yet, and that gives her hope. Aww, given the prior scene, this is what we call monumentally bad timing. (Or, in K-drama lingo, just another Thursday.)

Off she goes to the bakery to cheerily greet Seo-woo. However, the latter is feeling hurt and accuses her of deceiving them about knowing Ji-hyun.

Good news for Ji-hyun’s father, who’ll be good to go home in about a week. He shares with Mom and Kang that he “met” Ji-hyun during his surgery, which by the way is one of those things that totally gets me in the heart. She brought Daddy back to life! Awww.

Next Mom and Kang visit Ji-hyun in her room, in a great mood. Kang asks for her recipe for seaweed soup, and Mom answers that she happens to have some because it’s Ji-hyun’s birthday. What coincidental timing!

Back at his place, he invites Ji-hyun in and does the whole “I made too much, you have to help me clear my table” thing. To skirt her suspicions, he says that today is Children’s Day, and in America everyone eats seaweed soup on Children’s Day. I’m about to bust a gut if she falls for it, but for once Ji-hyun catches on and guesses that he really cooked it for her.

She eats, and recognizes the taste of her mother’s cooking. She tells him that Ji-hyun would be thankful, while inwardly they both have their own mini-conversation, with him wishing her a happy birthday, and her thanking him.

And finally, Kang suggests that they “lower their words,” which is a way that adults progress from a (polite) jondaemal relationship to a (closer) banmal one. He fills her in on her father’s recovery, and she says that she’ll make sure to tell Ji-hyun to thank him once she’s back.

Kang drops by to see Seo-woo, thinking it’d be nice that Ji-hyun’s two remaining friends remember her birthday. Seo-woo’s still smarting from discovering that her longtime crush is in love with her friend, and asks when he got so interested in Ji-hyun.

Min-ho throws his money around to get the better of Ji-hyun by contacting her landlord and offering triple the rent if she rents her room to him, and kicks her out immediately. That’s such a K-drama villain thing to do — endanger the heroine so you can swoop in and coerce her to do your bidding. He uses that to force Ji-hyun into meeting him for dinner, and she goes along because she’s afraid he’ll make things complicated for Yi-kyung.

At dinner, Min-ho waits until Ji-hyun is eating to ask, “But I thought you didn’t like sujebi, Ji-hyun.” Uh-oh. Caught off-guard, Ji-hyun insists that she’s Yi-kyung, but he doesn’t waver from his conviction, guessing that there’s a reason she can’t admit her true identity. Losing his calm, he demands, “Why did you approach me?!”

Ji-hyun runs away, cowering in panic, and immediately starts to call Kang. (Awww!) But she recalls the Scheduler’s warnings and thinks twice, canceling the call, and races to Yi-soo instead.

He’s upset with her, though, and tries to dismiss her quickly because now he can only see Yi-kyung when he sees her. And when she pleads for help with Yi-kyung’s face, he can’t handle it.

But Ji-hyun’s no pushover (anymore), and asks him pointedly who stole her life prematurely with that suicide attempt, wanting to know if they were punished for that. Yi-soo, chastened, says vaguely that he thinks she was punished. That’s not a good enough answer for her (“You think?”) and he replies, “She probably did.” Ji-hyun picks up on his hedging, and guesses that it was Yi-kyung: “You made me enter the body of the one who killed me?”

That’s too much, and Ji-hyun screams in frustration. She has 11 days left, In-jung betrayed her, and Min-ho’s discovered her identity: “The only friend I could talk to was the Scheduler, but he doesn’t want to see me because I carry his girlfriend’s appearance. But she’s the one who caused my death. On top of that, I’ve come to like her.”

He says that she doesn’t understand the pain of seeing the one he was crazy-in-love with and being unable to talk to her, but that doesn’t fly with Ji-hyun, who counters, “Do you think you’re the only one who loves? I love, too! I can’t say anything to Kang, either!” (AWWW.) “My feelings are Shin Ji-hyun’s, but if I reveal that I’m her, I might die.”

She starts to cry, and I love that Yi-soo is just as weak to the sight of a girl’s tears as Kang was, and he’s so uncomfortable and helpless at the sight of them. Ji-hyun casts off his comforting gesture, warning him to stay away from Yi-kyung unless she calls him.

Both Yi-soo and Ji-hyun wonder why it had to be Yi-kyung’s body that served as host. Clearly, they have never seen a drama before, because the obvious answer is: Because we need conflict?

Ji-hyun is resentful and angry, especially since she’d been so worried for Yi-kyung. That night, while sitting beside her at home, Ji-hyun cries, “You’re the one who did this to me!” She strikes out as though wanting to hit Yi-kyung, but as her ghostly arm passes through the air, it actually finds purchase on something solid, and flings the chopsticks out of Yi-kyung’s hand. Whoaaaa.

Yi-kyung looks up, squinting in the direction of the disturbance…and makes out Ji-hyun’s blurry outlines. Eeeeee. Shivers just ran down my spine.

Yi-kyung lurches back and asks, “Why are you doing this?”

But that’s when the landlord knocks on her door to tell her that she’s found a renter, and that she wants her out in a week. Suddenly contrite, Ji-hyun apologizes, but a spooked Yi-kyung runs out and away from her.

Yi-kyung arrives at the cafe that night to find Min-ho waiting for her, who knows this isn’t Ji-hyun and introduces himself formally. He knows of her hotel background and offers her a job at a new pension in Busan, wanting her out of Seoul and out of his hair. He references the “borrowing” of her body and presents this as her solution, and offers her the contact information.

Yi-kyung drops by Dr. Noh’s office in the morning to run it by him, although why she’d trust such an incompetent doctor is beyond me. He likes the idea, because it’s becoming clear that the two souls’ lives are intersecting, and two souls can’t occupy the same body. What if that tag-along soul decides to borrow her body forever?

Yi-kyung comes home and squints in the general area of Ji-hyun, sensing her presence, and again makes out her image. She opens her front door and says, “Leave. Please.” Ji-hyun apologizes, but feels guilty enough that she heads out as requested.

Outside, Ji-hyun staggers as her energy levels continue to drop. Yi-kyung packs up, only taking a small bag with her, and tells her landlady to do with the rest as she will.

Ji-hyun worries to Yi-soo that Yi-kyung is leaving, but he doesn’t have much to say to her other than “You brought it on yourself.” True, but ouch. He likens it to his own actions, and says he can’t help. He won’t risk threatening his one slim chance at meeting Yi-kyung to set her straight about their misunderstanding.

Kang pulls into the neighborhood just as Yi-kyung hops into a cab like Death itself were chasing her — no, just Death’s minion — and wonders at her departure. He realizes that this Yi-kyung was dressed differently, though, and confirms with the landlord that she moved out.

Understanding that no host means no Ji-hyun (in corporeal form), he runs outside shouting Ji-hyun’s name. As Yi-kyung boards the train for Busan, Ji-hyun wanders the neighborhood, losing energy until she collapses on the sidewalk.

COMMENTS

Yay for actual progress, actual development, and real payoffs! What a satisfying episode on all fronts — the love confessions, the I’m-an-evil-bitch confessions, the ghost revelations, the tear discovery, the Yi-kyung-killed-me reveal, everything. I don’t know why they didn’t save some good stuff for later, but hey, I’m not complaining. I’m thrilled that there was so much to pay off the setups that have been laid into the groundwork all series long.

The end of this episode is one of those things that is so simple that I wonder why I didn’t consider it before — that Ji-hyun is screwed if her host leaves — but it makes sense within the context. There was no reason for her to leave until people started finding out about Ji-hyun being the body-borrower, and this is a simple conflict with serious complications.

The Yi-kyung and Yi-soo storyline hasn’t really gotten me emotionally before — I appreciated it, and felt that it was too bad for their relationship to have met such an early end — but this episode is where it finally got me in the gut. I love that Yi-soo feels so incredibly devastated at the realization of how much he hurt Yi-kyung, and his desperation to fix it is palpable. I’ve loved Jung Il-woo before, but I really appreciate his level of emotional commitment here. I’d wondered why he’d take such a small supporting character when he was just starting to come into lead roles, but now I get it.

Although, it does beg the question: Why is he the only one emoting in this drama?? I mean, I love the characters and their relationships, and I like most of the cast fine — even In-jung, or rather Seo Ji-hye, who adds depth to this straightforward villainess — but really, a lot of the acting has been on a flat energy level throughout. It’s like they’re all operating at 70%, except Jung Il-woo, who’s giving it all he’s got, and Bae Soo-bin who’s mostly on par with the others but occasionally flares into the 110% range. Like when he’s screaming and throwing paintings on floors. (Hee. So unintentionally funny.) It’s something I really notice while recapping, because I’m picking out screencaps and they all look the same. Thank goodness for Jung Il-woo.

Although JIW is not the main lead actor, he is THE Scene Stealer in this episode and other parts of this drama. I cried when Yi Soo died and when he got his memory back!

He didn't have much to do in his last role in Take Care of the Young Lady..Why did he take that lousy role?

Couldn't understand why he was doing this minor role too when he was just getting recognition for lead parts. However, JIW is just GREAT in this one. I really like best his character of the Scheduler and can't wait for him to show up more in the rest of this drama.......MORE JIW!!!

JIW made a really good choice with this drama. I know the ratings aren't that great, but he got to use his acting chops and one minute of his role here is worth 100x his total scenes in My Fair Lady (the drama sounded good before the bajillion changes done to it till the point where it's only a shadow of its former intention)

I was saving some tears from when I got my final grades back (Yeah, watching Kdrama doesnt do much for my calculus class :P) But I shed them all today with the beginning of the episode.

Wow, Jung Il Woo was amazing, that was seriously great acting right there. Anyways, I had a feeling that Ji Hyun was going to collapse because through the episode, her spirit seemed out of breath (and I mean, why would a spirit be out of breath?)... Who's going to help her now? No idea. The scheduler doesnt want to ruin his chances of seeing Yi kyung for one last time and obviously Kang cant see her in spirit form (which is why while he was screaming her name on the streets, I was laughing a little inside... I mean she could be walking next to him but he wouldnt know she was there so what's the point?).

The developments in this episode were great, I had been wondering since episode 10/11 (when Ji Hyun started to care for YK's body) when she was going to find out that she's the one who caused her death. She has a right to be angry and im glad that she is, sometimes I find her to be WAAAAAY too nice. Im glad that we found out the end of YK/DS story, I get it but I wasnt into the dragging it out for so long.

Anyways, we can all conclude that Ji Hyun is "F@#$%!" if Yi Kyung doesnt come back quick. Im glad that YK can see and sense JH, even more glad that she feels like she can talk to her... thats forging a relationship in them and im sure that YK is one of those 3 tears. I mean, if she loves her (she should be grateful just for the fact that she washes her hair and showers) she will love Ji Hyun for who she is, thus enabling her to cry a sincere tear.

Well, off to study for my finals now... I swear I couldnt concentrate on my studies just waiting for the recap XD. How many more episodes to go?

I wonder who the last two tears will be. I'm pretty sure Seo-woo will be the second tear. So candidates for last tear:

1. Min-ho : the love he has developed for JH/YK?

2. In-jung: hinted by the line "I sincerely love JH too" in ep 15. maybe deep down she still has a heart? and when she somehow realizes what she's doing is wrong, her tears become real...

3. Schedular!: the problem here for me is....he's not human

4. Yi-kyung: this is the one i prefer. YK, who had no one beside her since YS died, sheds a real tear for JH!

Seo-Woo and Yi-Kyung, hopefully in that order. In-Jung has a bit of a chance, but I can't find myself to like her enough to want her tear for Ji-Hyun haha >____<"

my vote is seo woo and yi kyung...
but if its seo woo, then it would be a big giveaway, no? since everyone(including Ji Hyun) is expecting he to wring out some tears.
i'm putting my money on yi kyung, tho, since she could feel ji hyun's presence.
or who knows, the writers might be mean enough to kill her off...grrr

Some thoughts:

1. Where and how did Dr. Noh get his medical degree? He's a total quack.
2. One thing that irks me is the limited field of vision the characters seem to possess. What is it like less than 20 degrees? They're totally lacking in peripheral vision. If they're looking straight at you, just move a little to the side and they'd totally lose you. They must suck at hide and seek.
3. Yi Soo's reward after five years of service as a scheduler is one last meeting with Yi Kyung? Or did I misunderstand that?
4. This episode, even with all the payoffs and revelations, seems to me like the calm before a storm.
5. Secret Garden, a drama with a similar premise, can't hold a candle to this one. I think at around the same episode count, I had already lost interest in Secret Garden.
6. One of the tears might come from In Jung.
7. Why must I wait one more week? Why oh why?

although i really enjoyed SG, i was pissed watching episodes 15/16/17! this drama just gets better and better and keeps me hooked. one more week....ugh.

Although I love JH and KA, YK and YS are just TOO CUTE. I love them together. Every time they're mentioned in the drama I squee. I can't wait until the next episode :3 (This is officially my favorite drama... actually. I can't say that. I still love Seon Deok like crazy XD)

Every episode has been engaging - hats off to the scriptwriter(s)! And they haven't resorted to illogical plot developments like the usual drama-cliche of long lost siblings, etc. This reminds me of the crazy scenarios that Dae-Woong's friends imagined when they got the invitation to Mi-ho and Dong-joo's wedding: http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/09/my-girlfriend-is-a-gumiho-episode-15/ LOL

Is it my imagination or was Min Ho's new code to his front door 11 08? Isn't that Yi Kyung's birthday? When JH was trying to find out his mother's birthday she gave him YK's and I think it was Nov 8. Man for him to change his passcode to her b-day, he must have really fell for her-hard! Which makes it all the more satisfying because the person he actually fell for was JH who he thought was clueless but in the end she played him! Yeah! I love this show! And the YS-YK story is breaking my heart into teeny tiny pieces. And for JH to finally find out it was YK's actions that led to her state-everything is just sooooo satisfying and original about this show.

It's not your imagination. It was very clearly shown that he pressed the new pass code 1108 which is YiKyung's B-Day. It's such an irony he totally fell in love with JiHyun in YK's body after all those years.....

I'm sorta confused as to why Yi Kyung doesn't recognize Kang. When Ji Hyun was pushed out of Yi Kyung's body in episode 12, wasn't Kang there to usher her away from Min Ho. Since they've met, there should be some sort of recognition or at least something stronger than the subconscious memories she has of Kang when inhabited by Ji Hyun.

She remembers! She sorta stared when Kang ah showed up at the coffee joint. But it would be weird for her to act like she knew him when Kang ah didn't let on. Unlike Kang Minho, who called her name and forced her to acknowledge him instinctively, Kang ah was very formal and acted like he doesn't know her. In the flashback when she was trying to decide whether to leave or not she thought of Minho's first appearance, Kang's "are you alright" in this episode, and In Jung who was there on the same night. Yi Kyung noticed In Jung staring and she obviously knows that In Jung is here because of Ji Hyun too.

This was an AMAZING episode! What amazing drama!

YS's story broke my heart.

I was scared with YK/JH when she look around and saw the empty restaurant and ran away mad scared.

The anger that came over JH when she found out about YK causing her coma.

All fit together so well and the last scenes left me so exhilirated.

I CAN'T wait for next week again!!!!!!

I cried buckets watching this episode. The story behind Yi-Soo and Yi-kyung is really heart-wrenching and kudos to Jung Il-woo for bring that out.

I'm really glad this drama doesn't have the usual 'how the main male lead gets together with the main female lead'. Instead, every character gets some fleshing out in terms of background and motives (well, almost every character anyway). Absolutely loving the writing!

Thanks for the recap, Javabeans (and for the previous one, girlfriday). I'm amazed at how witty and meaningful your comments are.
As for 49 days, man, do I love this drama! The series just gets better and better. What I love most about this drama is that the characters actually USE their brains! Some are even sneaky bastards (read: Min-ho). I also love that the writer takes bits and pieces of information from previous episodes and makes them relevant in the present - i.e. when Min-ho asks Kang if he returned to Korea for Ji-Hyun, or when Kang remembers Yi-Kyung/Ji-Hyun telling him she'd caught her fiance and friend in a hotel and then links them to Min-Ho and In-Jung, or when Ji-Hyun makes the connection that it was her beloved host (or "unni" as she would call her) who had indirectly caused her fatal accident.
-
It didn't occur to me, either, that Yi-Kyung would ever leave Ji-hyun's side, but it makes sense, and her actions are logical and sound. I found the entire scene of Ji-Hyun frantically chasing after Yi-Kyung really interesting though - in a way, doesn't it look as though Yi-Kyung is "abandoning" (ditching) Ji-Hyun? What with Ji-Hyun begging her not to go while banging against the window of the car, and Yi-Kyung pretending not to notice. And she happens to be boarding a TRAIN, too (with her belongings)! I think that this will somehow resonate with Yi-Kyung - maybe she'll flash to memories of how her mother abandoned her at the train station, which would make her feel bad for Ji-hyun and subsequently get her to hop off the train at the next stop. Maybe she'll even be the one to find Ji-Hyun's unconscious spirit and help her get on her feet or somehow transport her to safety (Yi-Soo might help, but he also might not - seeing as he's a little indifferent to Ji-hyun's troubles at the moment). I would love it if Yi-kyung is the one who makes a conscious effort to stay - rather than, say, having Kang stop her.

"she’ll even be the one to find Ji-Hyun’s unconscious spirit and help her get on her feet or somehow transport her to safety"

OMG. I can't believe that didn't occur me at all! Coz at this point in time, only yi-soo & yi-kyung have the ablity to help her! That wld be absolutely fantabulous if it happened!

I mean, most ppl watching this drama dun really seem to be taking note of the YK-JH interaction, which I personally like alot. I mean, this kinda veers off from usual drama themes right? It's usually ALL about Boy-Girl love and less like this kind of heart warming love that JH has for this total stranger.

So I felt really really upset when YK left...
And after all JH tried to do for her...

0

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree. I really hope that's what will happen, because I had felt really betrayed too, when Yi-Kyung left.

And I think Yi-Kyung also knows that Ji-Hyun (or the ghost that inhabited her body) is her only connection to Yi-Soo (since she's not as aware of Yi-Soo's ghostly presence). Hopefully that will give her added incentive to get off that train and come back to Ji-Hyun.

Can I just add that it killed me seeing Yi-Soo all bloody on the pavement, all the while looking at the ring he was about to give to his dream girl but couldn't. I can definitely see why he became a scheduler - with the unfinished business, unresolved quarrel, and unsaid feelings. That's just sad! No wonder Yi-Kyung is like a living zombie - everything about their past feels so...incomplete!
-
And seeing as so many people are already taking guesses about the ending, I'll just add my two cents, too:
I have no idea exactly what's gonna happen in the remaining episodes...which makes the ride all the more exciting. I do, however, have faith that there will be a happy ending - that JH WILL get three tears, wake from her coma, and live happily ever after with Kang (who sure as hell deserves it). Narratively, I think it would be unsatisfying to have JH just die (I mean, after all that she's been through, it'd be sad if three people didn't genuinely love her), and for Kang to fall in love with YK (he's been in love with her for 10+ years, and for the entirety of this drama - it'd be kinda weird for him to switch gear at this point).
I love that they take bits and pieces from previous episodes and make them relevant to the present)
Why? B/c narratively, I think it would be unsatisfying to
a) have JH die (I mean, after all that she's been through, it'd be sad if three people didn't genuinely love her),
b) for Yi-Kyung to die so that JH could take over her body (i think the message the writers are trying to send is to always try to LIVE life to its fullest), or
c) for Kang to fall in love with YK (he's been in love with JH for 10+ years, and for the entirety of this drama, so it'd be kinda illogical for him to switch gear at this point, even in a flashforward).
I think that YK will also have her own "happy" ending - in that she'll be able to properly say goodbye to Yi-Soo, who will let her know that he's always loved her and never abandoned her like she believed. YK will be able to pick up from where she left off in life, after she finally gets some closure - with JH as a lifelong friend. (I used to think she would end up with the Doc, but now I sure hope NOT - what a whacko! First the "stalking", then the doc-patient confidentiality violation? Some bf he'd be!)

) as that sort of ending makes sense too, only that I don't see it as a happy ending.

Agree with you about the doctor being a total whacko. The inner fangirl in me is shipping (if and only if Yi-Soo is completely out of the equation) Yi-Kyung with the Purple Coffee shop owner guy. They've barely had any interaction but I thought he was kinda cute XD

Well I am always trying to find a logical solution for everyone. :)

Jane knows it :)
I would have prefered it if Kang had fallen for the real Yi Kyung.
And there would be a good oppurtunity if not all of those people who finds a different personality in someone else suspect first: "she is been posessed by a ghost." :)
Rather then she has a trauma, or something else, like the Doctor suspected first, too.

---
But I realize it now too. This is no more possible. It would be an akward change after all. (Because both of them admitted already their feelings for each other). So I truly don`t expect a
pairing love for Yi Kyung anymore. :(
Most likely she has to heal first her trauma from what she suffered because of Yi Soo and will be able to accept love and caring from others after this business is finished.
Maybe the first person she will love will be Ji Hyun in a sisterly way.
---
But still I wish for her a loverelationship. too.
--
And I am not totally against Min Ho.
Althogh he shows only his bad an terrible side, there could be a switch to the good, too.

-------------------
And this is what I am questioning:
Why did he try to abandon Ji Hyun from Yi Kyung?

-
Whom does he love now?
Is it Ji Hyun or Yi Kyung?

Isn`t he trying to kill Ji Hyun by abandoning her spirit form Yi Kyung.
Or is he trying to block Ji Hyun loving Kang?

Altough I dind`t get this point, one thing is for sure.
He doesn`t love In Jung :))))
So her attemps in this case were for nothing...:)

i think that MH is trying to protect YK. he tells her at the cafe that if she continues to let her body be possessed, he can't stop himself from doing something bad to her (YK). that's why he gives her the out and tells her to leave.

you know...i wouldn't be totally surprised if MH somehow redeems himself...not that i want him to. i really wanted a HK/YK pairing, but this episode seemed to close that door with a thud. i'm starting to be okay with JH being with HK, BUT NGR being the JH he ends up with??? meh.

so maybe there is a MH/YK pairing on the horizon? i don't know that i like that. although...BSB is kind of "muh-shi-suh"! :)

So Min Ho asks the real YK to leave!

You mean the scene where he gave the real YK a businescard and asks her to lieve?

What. an. episode... Had me sobbing like a baby. The only words that came out int he first 7 minutes were

"otteke!"

in true Ji-Hyun fashion.

What do you guys like most about the episode?
I like:

1. Kang ahhhhhhhhhhhh! That goes without saying. Particularly, when he said "happy birthday, Ji Hyun" to her in his head. I just burst out crying without knowing why... that distance, that gulf of life and death that separates them got to me.

2. Yi Kyung leaving resolutely. She is ready to move on, and Ji Hyun has been a big part of that. (Tho I spent the last 5 mins fretting about our Ji Hyun---I want her to live so bad!)

3. That Kang Minho is using Yi Kyung's bday as his new passcode!!! That scene was so well done. Excellent placement, and appropriately revealing of how far gone he is for Ji Hyun. KARMA!!!

Strangely touching moment: the screencap--Yi Soo and Kang ah in that moment---is PD nim trying to foreshadow something?? I had a panic attack that JI Hyun will die and Kang ah will look after Yi Kyung for Yi Soo, because there is no way he can come back to life (he's bound for the elevator after the meeting with Yi Kyung). I got worried when Ji Hyun passed Kang the box for safekeeping...does that mean that there will be continuation story between Kang ah and Yi Kyung?? NOoooooooo! While I love JHJ and LYW together, I am now fully sold on Ji Hyun coming back to life to get together with Kang ah. NGR + JHJ is growing on me. ahhhh i'm dying of worry!!!

We're all guessing who the other 2 tears are. What if Ji Hyun dies??? Ji Hyun sorta guessed that the 49 days are a gift to those who died too early, and S has said that the lifespan of everyone has already been decided. But she is obviously the kindest person (right up there with KANG AH of course) in the whole show.... if she dies, where is the justice!?!!

sorry for the rant... the questions are spinning ard in my head while I begin the longggg wait to next wed

I beg to differ
Actually I didn't feel satisfied with the way the fact the tears came from Kang was known in that way. It was sort of down-played and doesn't make sense. There has to be a better way to reveal it.

You see a pendant and you think it looks like a tear and it has a bubble inside and you assume it's a real tear? Eventhough he know about the soul exchange thing but that's a bit far-fetched.

Kang was never portrayed as noticing the pendant. Also, he just confessed that it's his tear just because it's on the same day.

Am I the only one disappointed?

Yeah but that's still after the tear was inside. But anyway even if he noticed it before I still feel it's a downplayed scene.

It should've been a wonderful revelation, and instead it was just like "Ahh, so it was you". Sure she had tears in her eyes because she was thankful, but she would have been like that whoever it is.

If i were here i would be "IT"S KANG!! IT'S KANG!! HE LOVES ME THAT MUCH!! I NEVER EXPECTED IT TO BE HIM!" Yanno what I mean?

yeah, me too, a bit disappointed at the way the first tear was revealed to JH. i guess the disappointments stems from our expectation that the reveal will be truly dramatic in true kdrama fashion.

but if there is something i noticed about this drama it is that it tends to downplay the big things, even most of the cliffhangers are followed by anticlimactic scenes.

I'm relieved there is no dramatic scene/plot/device in this drama. I feel more involved and just like watching Jdrama. I don't want this drama to become over the top. LOL

and about when the cliffhanger become downplayed. I'm disagree. Especially in the end of episode, 10, 11, and 15. They give me what i want instead.

Ep 10, when Kang gives his tears to ji hyun, they change the game from hang kang who don't know it's ji hyun, comes to know. YAY... I really think they will dragging it. EP 11, instead getting caught by Min ho regarding her identity, they show us some important a flash back and clues instead, That I Yearn for since i start watching the drama. And in episode 15, they show us scene i looking for, Yi Soo's accident. So, instead, i really really satisfy so far.

It's the show's MO. They don't give us those heightened moments we expect from Korean dramas. I've already made my peace with it.

Required fields are marked *

I'm the opposite, It's logical for me especially in fantasy drama like this, and I assume it just his assumption and he believes that something he wants to believe.
In this drma it totally make sense.
First, he just discover that to proof our love for someone who almost die: tears. And he notice that yi kyungs always panic and touch her pendant when he admit he knows she is ji hyun. So his conclusion: pendant is the important part for her 49 days journey.
He wants to confirm if collecting tears is the important part in order to LIVE again. So he confirm since when those pendant change. She confirms it was the day when she give resignation letter. oh my god, it's the day when I cried. DITTO! So his guess about tears getting clear. But he has yet to proof it. And if u ask me, i think Ji Kyung Reaction after that can proof that his assumption is true. she is being touched when she knows he cried for ji hyun.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, but I have a weird feeling that Yi Kyung is going to be one of the tears. In the previous episode she addressed knowing of JH's presence, and felt that she cared for her. She may be a little upset with her now but she'll come around!

Additionally, I'm still rooting for Seo Woo. I don't think she would be the type to hate on JH just because the guy she likes happens to like her. If she can kick In Jung to the curb based on her own standards of friendship, it really wouldn't make sense. On the other hand, it would most likely have an effect on the type of tears she shed. Who knows?

This show is so good! :)

I am now thinking....

Minho will be the third tear after Seo-woo. He realizes that, free from his evil motive, he has started to fall for JH in YK's body. And, knowing that JH will be gone forever, he sheds his tears.

Sorry if someone guessed this one too earlier. I haven't read all the posts by others.

Also, Seo-woo may delay her pure tear until very end because of her jealousy of JH/YK because she likes Kang.

Either that, maybe JH takes over YK's body and YK is reunited with YS in afterlife. And, they all live happily. JH in YK's body live happy with Kang.

I can see JH with HK but not w/her in NGR's body. NGR and JHJ haven't had enough screen time together to build their chemistry like JHJ and LYW have. NGR is effective playing teenage JH but LYW is better playing adult JH because the adult JH is supposed to have become stronger. Think about the scene when JH tells MH that she never liked him. The scowl on LYW's face is perfect. Can u imagine NGR doing the same scene and it having the same impact? I don't think it would. All the confrontational scenes between JH and others is done with YK's body so when we think of strong JH we see LYW not NGR. NGR's JH still doesn't pack a punch which is why I can't see JH and HK together with JH in NGR's body. But that was a mistake on the writer's part for not giving NGR some scenes where she shows her JH as being tougher and stronger. All the "I am stronger/smarter" scenes were done w/LYW making NGR's JH seem undeveloped. I've decided to stop bashing NGR because I realize it's not her fault. She is acting according to the lines/role she is given. It's the writers' fault for not giving her more to do. Sorry this was so long-I get carried away w/ this show. :D

An additional point - the OST for this drama is superb - no jarring inappropriate music to take attention away from the acting (hello, ALMOOST PARADISSSSE!).

It's really good to see a drama of this caliber. The storyline is like a mystery manipulation wooden puzzle - everything is snapping into place. :)

Let me just say this: Kang and live Ji-Hyun have to be together! If they don't I will stop watching this drama! Min-ho has to get what he deserves, but there is a space for his redemption. As for In-Jung there is NO space for redemption. At the beginning there was, but the ship labeled "Redeem Thyself" has sailed! I am totally suspecting Seo-woo to cry at SOME POINT! She has to, or I will not like her anymore. If she had such a crush on Kang she should have done something about it already, instead of harboring it for who knows how long, and getting hurt this way. Scheduler/Yi-soo has to stop Yi-kyung from leaving! Or Yi-kyung has to come to her senses and get off the freaking train! Geez. I love this drama but it is so frustrating! I think I may have a heart attack from loving this show and wanting only the best for everyone (excluding In-Jung).I hope at least some of my expectations (Kang and live Ji-hyun) are met!
Thanks for the recap, Javabeans!

I can sort of understand In Jung. While I most definitely do not condone what she did to her friend, I understand the frustration she felt with her friendship with Ji Hyun. It must have been frustrating not being an equal in a friendship, always being on the receiving end and incapable of giving anything. Increasingly being indebted....I don't know. In Jung is not simply jealous of wealth, it's the feeling of less than equal I think that drives her to do what she did.

I like this show because the villains are not your stereotypical villains. They are very human with very human feelings. It's very easy to hate them, but at some point, you have to feel sorry for them too.

Only a few episodes left and although now seems to be a long shot, I am still convinced that it will be a
HK + YK tandem.

The tears, most likely, would come from MH & IJ (those traitors!!!). They would be remorseful in the end. Too late the hero but if those tears would get JH to live again, I'd go for it.

Yes, this episode belonged to JIW. Great acting! The only way he could come back would be to inhabit someone's body. You'll never know - it may be the one of the terms of his agreement with the Ahjummah Reaper on motorbike!

Another week! I'll keep myself busy by teaching English to Koreans online for the meantime. That should keep my mind off 49D for the next few days.

KANG AHHHHHHHHHH......... Saranghe (mucho, mucho)!!!

Some things I want to see happen by the end of this drama:

1. They find the girl who took that photo of her and Yi Soo whilst he was sleeping and sent it to Yi Kyung, and beat the hell out of her.

2. Yi Kyung gets the ring that Yi Soo worked his guts out to buy and sees that during their two weeks apart he was thinking of her everyday.

3. Yi Soo writes a song for Yi Kyung, expressing all the love he felt for her and she realises that he never abandoned her and feels at peace and gets to say her farewell to him properly.

4. Yi Kyung still opens a pension named February, that's dotted with pictures of Yi Soo everywhere so people won't forget this person existed. I don't want her to be miserable and living in the past forever though, so she needs to have a loving husband and children who fully understands that once upon a time Yi Soo was a very important to Yi Kyung because he was a person who loved her very much.

I know Ji Hyun and Kang are supposed to be the main couple here but now they've explained the story of Yi Soo and Yi Kyung it's the storyline that pulls my heartstrings more because afterall Ji Hyun isn't quite dead yet and there's still hope, but the other couple has to say goodbye forever and live in pain and regret of things they didn't manage to achieve together before being separated, a separation that can't be reversed.

Did anybody notice that Min-ho changed his house code to Ji Kyung's fake birthday? It's kind of sad...but I still hate him from taking Ji Hyun from Kang ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I favor Jo Hyun Jae's acting because he emotes his feelings through those eyes of his. It's like you can read him like a book. In the last scene, his eyes read that he had just lost everything that was precious to him, as he ran through the streets searching for Ji Hyun.

so true, JHJ's eyes convey a thousand emotions! it is just so sad that most people don't know how to appreciate an actor who acts from the heart. they prefer those who are better at contorting their faces to show emotion.

No fair! I am a fan of JIW's acting not because he contorts his face to show emotions--that's exactly what his role as zany, cooky, slightly unhinged Scheduler called for initially and so he had to do that. I admire him because of his RANGE. He did that in the first episodes, but now, his acting reveals that he is now feeling human emotions again, and by golly he did not have to contort his face while crying as he recognized YK. And his acting in Return of Iljimae was superb, and that did not call for contortionist facial muscles either; in fact JIW acted mostly with his eyes there when he donned the ninja suit, and was breathtaking.

I love JHJ too and he is a good actor, but only that for me, JIW is the better actor.

dear writer,

you can decide everything or pair up everyone that you like to be this drama's ending,
except separate YK and YS or just give them one last meeting to tidy up the misunderstanding.
just make YS come back as a human ~~~

you know...i was wondering (sorry, off topic kinda...) but, would JH remember everything that happened when she was a ghost once she wakes up from her coma? Cuz, of course, she'll wake up- if she doesnt, that would suck.

Cuz if she wakes up and doesn't remember what happens...I'd feel so bad for Kang. :'(

In a previous episode Scheduler already stated that she would not remember anything that happened during the 49 days if she succeeds and wakes up.

WHAT IF (I can't believe I'm going to type this) but what if, Yi-kyung confronts everyone in Ji-Hyun's hospital room (after she wakes up of course) and tells everyone what happened during those 49 days that Ji-Hyun inhabited her body, BECAUSE SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING!! And then Ji-Hyun remembers and ends up with Kang ahhhhh! EEEEE! I hope so!

Thank You for the recap!
My heart goes out to both of the male leads of the show. Kang and Scheduler at this point just want to meet the woman that they love.
I wish Scheduler is in a coma somewhere like Ji Hyun too so that he could wake up and be reunited with her.

Kang-aah! I hope you are reunited with Ji Hyun and I hope the Song couple gets together too. That would be the best ending.
- Yi-Kyung please dont abandon Jihyun and help her. I hope she gets off the train and decides to fight against MinHo.
-Friends like Injung make you doubt your friends in real life, but I hope all of us have atleast a friend that would remain true to the very end. AHHH cant wait for the next episode. 3 more days to go -__-
