The supporting leads of City Hunter

We’ve seen plenty of pretty pictures of leading man Lee Min-ho for the upcoming City Hunter (not that I’m complaining, mind you!) and a few stills of him with co-star Park Min-young; now it’s time for us to take a look at the complicators of their budding romance, also known as the drama’s second leads.

In this show, those interlopers are played by Lee Jun-hyuk and Gu Hara, pictured here, as well as Hwang Sun-hee, another contender for Lee Min-ho’s affections.

First, let’s take a look at Lee Jun-hyuk, who reportedly dropped 7 kg for the role of sharp young prosecutor. His City Hunter character is a familiar type, the caring Daddy Long Legs who looks after our heroine (Park). Sigh. Another one. I like him better being light and funny than taking on the doomed second lead, but maybe this is his way of upping the ante as an actor.

In case you’re scratching your head wondering why a 7 kg loss looks so much like his old self (say, from his City Hall days, or Three Brothers), it’s because he’d actually put the weight on for his last drama role, when he’d played the gruff star songwriter in I Am Legend. Apparently he gained the weight to give his single-dad character a mature appearance, to offset the age difference between him (then 26) and his sorta-love interest, Kim Jung-eun (then 34). Too bad those two had no chemistry anyway and that loveline ultimately fizzled.

In any case, Lee Jun-hyuk describes his character thusly: “He’s an intelligent, upright character with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. He has charisma and a warm presence.” Also, he will not get the girl, so there’s no use getting attached to that love angle, unless you like rooting for snowballs in hell. (Not that I’d say he could steal the spotlight from Lee Min-ho, but I think Lee Jun-hyuk has a boyish appeal of his own.)

Then there’s Gu Hara, the idol pop star making a leap into the acting field as the president’s daughter, whom bodyguard Park Min-young is assigned to protect. So when the flighty first daughter heads for the clubs, Park follows (dressed in plainclothes), which is how the previously teased kiss scene comes about.

Gu’s character is supposedly fashion-conscious, but I remain unconvinced, as it still doesn’t explain why she’s wearing a Jetsons costume here. Seriously, it’s like they fashioned it out of air conditioning duct lining. Well, maybe she’s just really (really, really) ahead of her time. And maybe they run out of natural fabrics in the future, what with all the flying cars and grumpy robo-maids eating up our resources. Clearly she’s being practical!

City Hunter follows 49 Days and premieres on May 25.

I know that a lot of people like Lee min-ho but to be honest, I do not, he is "too perfect". If I am going to watch this series it is going to be precisely for the second leads.

You try having someone use the same name as you and see if you don't get pissy too. I have never used name calling around here before, but even you would get mad if someone decided to use your name. Granted it could be by accident that we have the same username but it's creepy. I apologize for calling people morons for not knowing, but I don't apologize for being angry and reacting without thinking, it's called being human. Besides, I didn't grow up in the States, so not everyone who knows the Jetsons are from the U-ess-of-ay.

I think your outburst was pretty uncalled for. It's not like your username is afwep843h, where it's hard to imagine a coincidence where two people on the internet go by the same name. It's Ani... heck, I knew two Anis at my tiny school. One was Annette and one was Anya. Annette sounded more "Ehni" and Anya more "Ahni."

To answer your question (which wasn't directed at me but oh well), I wouldn't get mad if someone used "my name". I'd either think it was a coincidence or... well, guess they like my name. Unless they're actively trying to pass themselves off as you, maybe you should take a chill pill.
Go ahead, take my username. I really don't mind, and you shouldn't either.

0

@phoenixash

Your username is too long for me. *sigh* Look, the awesome thing about the internet is that you can use a username and be different from everyone else. When someone comes in and uses the same username it complicates things. They're taking away the name you've used to establish yourself in a certain community. What would happen if we had someone who can name themselves nigahiga or kevjumba or the communitychannel when there are already people out there with that name? What would happen if someone used your username to insult the friends you've created here on Dramabeans phoenixash? I've not created a tight circle here at Dramabeans like some, but I have made a place for myself, small and inconspicuous as it may be. Is it a coincidence? Well I don't know since this person has yet to reply to my pleas. If they did and said it was coincidence, maybe I'd be willing to start over and use a fresh username. As for my outburst, I'm sure I've apologized about that the name calling, but its only human to be mad.

0

Lol, hearing that my username was long was a first for me.

I see your point, but the thing is that the internet is a double-sided coin. You get to have your own name and carve your own identity, but then someone has the rights to have the same name, whether coincidentally or not. My username was inspired by someone else's, but I don't go around posing as that user. As long as they're not claiming to be the same person, I don't see the problem. And it's hard to impersonate someone else with 4 words and an emoticon.

Perhaps I overreacted slightly as well, but I still think this is not quite as big a deal as you think. If this person hardly ever posts, I don't think you need to worry about changing your username. Just go about your merry way, thinking, "Oh, there's someone else on this site that goes by the same username. Ain't that crazy."

0

Actually, you're right. After the initial frustration that came out of this, you would be surprised how funny it has become for me. I was set out on the first day to tell the person to cut it out, but by nightfall I was laughing about it. There's actually three of "us" now. I don't know how often this will happen, but I think it's pretty hilarious. Imagine the confusion if we all decided to have a lengthy serious conversation constantly replying to each other. Here's a not-so-serious conversation we struck up ( http://www.dramabeans.com/2011/05/go-hyun-jung-publishes-beauty-book/ ). Even poor Jomo had to admit to how strange it is. HAHAHA. I love it. XD

So basically you'll get a better chance getting into acting if you become an idol star first?. I swear there's one or two in almost every drama and most of them sucks.

Required fields are marked *

The purpose of becoming an idol is to become actors in most cases. Unless an idol can succeed as a solo artist, there is a huge difference in earnings power. A star actress would make (on acting only) just as much as some girl groups make (on albums sales only) in a year with one drama. That's 2~3 months of work that's equivalent to a year of album sales. But the groups must also divide their profits among its members and actress doesn't.

It wasn't always easy for idols to get acting gigs. It's only been recently that idol agencies began investing in dramas and movies with the condition of using their idols. Adding that to the fact that idols are usually cheaper and they bring some fans at this low cost.

Most idols will say that they have dreams of acting.

0

Required fields are marked *

Idol nowadays have a much easier time becoming actors. Years ago, it was much looked down upon to have idols acting in dramas. Now, more idols are getting acting gigs while the real actors (mostly
newbies) are having a tough time getting gigs.

A lot contribute the success of idols turned actors to Yoon Eun Hye. But when she first started acting, there were strikes and petitions trying to get her out of the production. Even Gong Yoo himself had to be convinced to try acting with her in Coffee Prince because he hd the perception of her just being an idol, not an actress. And now she is like the highest paid and most sought- after actress in Korea. Now, idols don't see strikes and petitions like that anymore, so they should be thankful.

It does bother me a lot when idols who can't act get leads or some supporting part in a drama. I don't think it's fair. If they have a cameo, that's fine but that should be it if they can't act. If they can act, then go to an audition and they shouldn't use their idol power to get a part if they can really act.

Gong Yoo had to be convinced to act with YEH in coffee prince? really? I'm just surprised coz coffee prince wasn't his first collaboration with an idol- One Fine Day was. Sung Yu Ri's from an idol background and she had been viciously criticised for her acting chops since her acting career commenced and yet Gong Yoo had high praises for her. Also, prior to filming coffee prince, YEH had already secured 1 best new actress and another best actress award under her belt so it seemed a bit odd for Gong Yoo to question her acting talent unless he didn't agree with the panel of judges and the audience who conferred the merit/title on YEH.

Actually, Sung Yuri was heavily criticized after becoming an actress, in the beginning, for several shows. She even has one of the all time worst line in drama history. "I'm the Buyoo princess". This line is commented on many of Sung Yuri's articles even today.

The difference between Sung Yuri and Yoon Eunhye's career path is this. Yoon Eunhye started out with a mega hit drama in her first lead and kept producing solid ratings and Sung Yuri didn't. As YEH became successful in this she was criticized more for her acting because she became the symbol of singer turned actress.

In SYR's case, as her dramas didn't become mega hits, number of people who cared about her acting had decreased over the years.

In my opinion, SYR improved and was good in Hong Gildong and Snow Queen. She's become a solid leading actress now. One problem, romantic comedies in which you have to act quirky isn't the easiest act to do. In upcoming Romance Town, she's already being criticized for bad acting just from the trailer. Her slang is not received very well so far. So we'll have to see what happens.

I don't know if Gong Yoo had to be convinced to act with YEH in CP. But I do know that he was telling the PD YEH isn't the problem at the end (right before making a decision). So it's true that PD thought that GY didn't want to work with YEH in the beginning because she was a singer turned actress. This is in CP specials. Plus, Gong Yoo's disappointment in One Fine Day was widely known. One of the reasons were rumored to have been because of Yuri (Just rumors, nothing confirmed).

I wouldn't say that SYR was good in HGD.

But then again, most of the acting in HGD was subpar.

You should watch Chae Rim's and Si Won's Oh My Lady.

The show is one big meta about why producers want idols in their shows. Which is, basically, for ratings.

Isn't ratings the root of all evil? The Live-shoot thing, the not-caring-if-idols-can-act thing, etc.

A small % of viewers/kdrama veterans might care whether this/that idol can act, but try telling that to the rabid fangirls of these idols and see if they listen to reason.

Some idol stars are just like newbie actors to me. They sign onto an agency with dreams of acting but then their agency puts them in an idol group and so they learn a little singing and dancing, and they're usually the less talented ones of the group. And then with their idol status they earn popularity and so it gets easier to get acting gigs.

"So basically you’ll get a better chance getting into acting if you become an idol star first?."

Starting out as an idol is a good way to become an entertainer of some sort. You may end up hosting variety shows, acting in banjun dramas, having small parts in sitcoms, etc. You might even become a lead actor some day.

However, the chances of somebody successfully debuting as an idol is extreme low. Even if you get accepted into a company, only a very small number end up every debuting. Among those who debut, only handful of members from popular groups will ever get a shot at any acting gig. And so on.

HOWEVER, this is a good way for a teenager to learn the craft and network. So even though you never debut, you do get acting lessons and singing lessons and you get to know people who may end up actors. THEN, you can become a theater major (many K-drama leads have some kind of acting degree) or enter the MBC/KBS/SBS acting schools.

His character sounds like someone with whom many women would be attracted. Who doesn't love the warm, charismatic, intelligent, and upright type? THAT is so much better than an arrogant, annoying, rich, and self-satisfied guy often portrayed by drama leads. I am not saying Lee Min-ho is going to be like that (even though he was for a while in "Boy's Over Flowers").

Anyway, I like rooting for the underdog. Who knows --- maybe he and Park Min-young will make some steam... I do like Lee Min-ho, too.

Oh gosh. Some KDramas really need better stylists. I remember watching Kim Hyun Joo in The Partner and cringing at the suits she wore to court and some of her office wear. While I get that she was supposed to be an ahjumma in the series, a lawyer is a lawyer and they have a (strict) dress code especially in court. Sigh.

In the case of City Hunter, I really agree that GHR looks as if she stepped out of The Jetsons' cartoon. C'mon Korea! You can do better than that. I know you can!!

Moving on...Which drama in your opinion had the best and worse (and maybe ridiculous) styling? Care to share? Heheh.

I, for one, thought that Ryu Si Won's style of pushing up his sleeves in the drama Style looked really weird.

Most of the drama and movie investors hold shares in idol groups and agency.

For example, CJ group owns Mnet, Core (T-ara) and is a shareholder of YG (Big Bang) This explains how these idols can easily get certain CFs and acting roles. There are many other agencies that are invested by groups under many different names.

0

Required fields are marked *

There are actors as well. So idols and actors that are connected to CJ has a huge advantage over others in getting CFs and acting roles. They also have media connections for articles and TV.

Some of these actors are Core Content idols, YG idols, and JYP idols. CJ promotes mostly these three idol agencies as they either invest directly or indirectly.

CJ also controls Korea Entertainment Producer's association through Core Content and CJ itself. So Core, YG, and JYP idols and actors have huge advantage here.

Ehhh not really . . . Korea's nowhere like Taiwan or Japan in the idol-actor department.

It's a reflection of the shows being made. Since Boys Before Flowers, there's been more youth dramas being made, thus you've seen more young idols in support and lead roles. A lot of these youth dramas are also keyed to the Hallyu market, in particular Japan and Taiwan (thus remaking Hana Yori Dango, City Hunter, It Started with a Kiss), and so it makes sense for them to try casting a member of Kara, who's aggressively hitting the Japanese market.

I feel these youth dramas are kinda being made in the same kind of market vacuum that the previous melodramas. Most of them will do very poorly in Korea, but they're being made for the Hallyu market. The fact that Korean pop culture is starting to reach Japanese girls in addition to their mums presents a big shift in the business model.

Will Korea ever follow the rest of Asia and turn much primetime drama into a marketing wing for SM, YG, and the other idol companies? Probably not, but these youth dramas are growing.

Fair enough.

But "Boys Over Flowers" was the first manga hit.

There were many. Mr. Q, Full house, Goong, Money War, and etc. were all manga hits.

Mr. Q aired in 1998 when term Hallyu was first introduced by Chinese reporters.

Korea government has been investing and supporting idol agencies for years. They are now investing millions in Korea's manga as well and giving breaks to companies that do projects to support it. Hallyu is a major government policy in Korea and an important political vehicle.

Your point is correct and I agree with you. But there are more reasons behind certain movement in Korea's entertainment.

They kinda have to. Most Japanese intellectual properties (dramas, manga, novels) cost less to license than the equivalent Korean properties.

By the way Japanese manga based dramas have been imported in Korea long ago. With idols in mind. One of earliest was "Jealousy" which aired in 1992, and was based on love story/Tokyo Love Story. The idol system in Japan was invested in Korea long ago in Kpop and TV. But not until the government got involved, it was able to increase its fans at home and abroad.

Yeah, Hallyu is Korean nationalism applied to pop culture, and as a Chinese person, the aggressive marketing is rather obnoxious. But hey I watch it so . . .

"By the way Japanese manga based dramas have been imported in Korea long ago."

Oh I know that, and that actually isn't my focus. I also understand that idols have been part of Korean dramas since I can remember. Some of my friends LOVED Kim Min Jong from his Blue days before he became a popular actor in the 90s.

Korea isn't so much remaking famous Japanese mangas, as they're remaking famous pan-Asian TV shows. And we know that a Korean Hana Kimi is coming up as well. They're basically doing what Hollywood does, for the youth drama market. Even something like Goong S, which sank like a stone in Korea, ended up popular in the Philippines.

I've definitely worn a skirt that short before (back when the trend was calf length dresses) and it is just too stressful - taking small steps because you don't want the skirt to move too much and then when you need to bend down, you have to orient yourself in a way so that your backside doesn't face anyone's line of vision. I'm sure the korean celebs are wear short-shorts underneath though.
