Watching it. I thought the first episode started out quite slow. I was tempted to stop, but I also realize now that it was essential. I'd say it's pretty good so far. The child actors are really good, which is refreshing. That's what keeps me going. I don't know how I'll feel about it once they go through the time shift.
It's definitely an interesting premise, but I can't form a full opinion on it yet. I'd definitely say give it a try. It's really heartwarming.

Hi MJP! :P I feel loved!!
Sorry, I wasn't able to play earlier but there was an emergency. Another girl has cast eyes on my husband!
She is younger than me, taller than me, fabulously beautiful, a wonderful dancer and and is uh more endowed than me. She is also very sweet, and kind. But if that wasn't enough, oh no, she also the daughter of a Minister. A Minister!! Can you think of anyone more perfectly suited to capture his interest?!

Viola,
Since I recently watched "It Started With A Kiss" tdrama, I have to encourage you not to give up your man.
As for her being a daughter of a minister, the daughter is NOT her father, so don't worry. I've heard it said so many times that PK's are human too!

Its quite good. I'm hooked by the time I got to ep 4. The kids performance...impressive. Get your tissues ready at ep 4. I'd miss the kids when the adults take over their characters. Can You Hear My Heart is now one of my can't wait for the next episode.
There are evil adults to hate. The relationship of the kids is really touching.

It's good, heart warming show, didn't think it's slow, it had that warm feeling of 'Thank You',nice paced so far. This weekend the adult casts should come in, I'll see whether it's worth follow through. Hope the story won't be too heavy. This show has heart really.

I actually liked it right from the beginning......So far I'm finding it wonderful and very heartfelt...the actors, both young and old are great especially Kim Sae Ron, who is one kid that I can say will go places in her career...the veterans are pure gold too (Jung Bo Seok, Lee Hye Young, Jung Jae Young)...I was already getting teary eyed from episode two because of all the heartfelt moments betwen father and daughter but by episode four I was crying a river....the drama itself is very beautiful to look at with gorgeous cinematography....the one thing that is putting me off slightly is all the birth secrets or rather non secrets since all the characters seem to know about it now and there are some pretty hateful villains in there two though the one thing I do appreciate is that they are not all caricatured and seem to be conflicted and have some depth

Good morning Open Thread! I've missed the last two weeks here because of being in my best friend's wedding in Alabama, and because I have been writing papers...
I'm here now, though, and I've finished the last assignment for my Master of Arts degree!!! I'm so happy I am practically floating around!
You know what this means, right? I now have SOOOOOO much more time to watch K-Dramas. Life, my friends, is very sweet right now.
I'm holding my breath and hoping that Best Love is fantastic, because those stills of CSW were making me drool...*crosses fingers and prays*
Hope you're all well! Have a feeling I'm just gonna lurk here today in reward for finishing my degree...

What are your plans now? What type of work are you planning to go into?

April 15, 2011 at 8:06 AM
Oddly enough, I won't be using this Master's degree directly in my career, although I know I'll use the skills in other areas.
Over the last two years I've worked with so many Korean exchange students here in my town, assisting them with English and editing for them, and it's shown me that I really have a love both for the Korean people and for teaching/tutoring in ESL situations. My bachelor's degree is in English, so it's not that surprising, really. As of August I'm going to be attending the Graduate Certificate in TESOL program at the University of Texas! The program lasts for two semesters, and I'll have my TESOL certification after that time.
The plan is to move to Korea in the summer or fall of 2012 and get a job teaching English in a conversational school or at a university in Seoul. My best friend moved back there at the beginning of this year and my heart's pretty much been in Seoul since then, so I would really like to move there at some point. We shall see!

April 15, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Do you speak Korean?
Ashley Thomas
April 15, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I speak a little Korean but I understand quite a bit - when I'm listening to my Korean friends in conversation I usually understand 60-70%. I'm also planning to take Korean courses while I'm studying in the TESOL program, so hopefully by the time I go over I'll be able to speak much more!
MJP
April 15, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Wow! 60-70% is a lot!!! I like to watch the shows RAW because I can't wait for the subs, but its more watching the actions. I only understand a word here and there.
I am so excited for you! Do you have plans to travel around Asia during your time off? I have a girlfriend who is a missionary in South Africa and she travels during her time off around the African continent. She teaches about AIDS and works with people with AIDS.
Ashley Thomas
April 16, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Well, I'm actually hoping to move there at least semi-permanently, so if I do that I'll need to periodically take trips outside the country in order to renew my work visa and things like that - so I'm thinking I'll travel to other surrounding countries during those times. But we'll see! I love to travel so I want to get as much as I can out of the experience!

On a separate note....what in the world is the bottled drink that was so popular in Secret Garden? Some kind of coffee? Or a vitamin drink? I'm really curious. None of the Korean markets near here have anything that looks remotely like it, although I've seen plenty of aloe and grass jelly drinks (whatever that is).

Congratulations on your degree!!! And congratulations on the extra time you'll have to watch k-dramas!!
I'm also SUPER EXCITED about Best Love. Not only because of the fantastic leads, or the genius writers, but since a virtual marriage that becomes real is like a gold mine of dramatic and comic potential. I'm like two steps away from counting down the days until this drama starts.

I'm so excited about best love. I keep imagining cha seung won in a range of emotions and really goofy antics but not ridiculous. I have been marathoning hong sisters dramas starting with choon hyang ( which I'd say so far is their best) I'm also thinking it's silly of me to expect the male lead to have as much fun as the female lead. It's usually the woman's story with the guy being a solid but flawed character. And I don't want cha seung won to be flawed!!!!!

I would love to see this show too, but when I did a search, I could not find any descriptions for "Best Love". I did however, find The Greatest Love for Gong Hyo Jin on Dramawiki. Apparently, they are going with this title instead.....but yeah, I would love to see CSW do more upbeat, fun, romantic characters. Him and Gong Hyo Jin together, not so sure about that.... then again, I was unsure about him with Kim Sun Ah and they totally rocked City Hall...

okay part of that had to do with both of those actors being great actors in their own right as well as the characters that were created. I think seung won oppa is going to do a good job and I think since he is a hot commodity he wouldn't pick a drama that won't pay well and will have a crappy script.

He is adorable isn't he? Although I have to say my favorite character so far is Janice unnie. I love her and her craptastic mullet! She steals every scene she's in and is in danger of running away with the whole show completely. So far she has way more chemistry with SJS than the leading lady does. Unfortunately, for me, she's the least engaging character so far. I find her kinda wimpy and whiny, and totally blah...Only 2 episodes in though, so maybe she'll grow on me enough to find a reason to want her to end up with the manny instead of her sister.

maybe they'll make manny have a "twin" so that byun jung soo can end up with ji seuk too. by the way this a semi reunion for some bad couple alums. choi jung yoon had ( in my opinion so far,) the best role of her career in that drama. everyone since then has been a step back and I thought that she would come in to her own in manny but it seems byun jung soo is one upping her.

Except Episode 1 wasn't all that great in my opinion. They immediately revealed why he came back to Korea. I hate it when they don't tell us things right away, but they revealed a bit to early for me. As always, the selection for the English speaking characters was, um, bad. Would've been nice to randomly grab, oh say, maybe Danny Glover to play the part of the Mets Player (Coach?). Alas, it was not possible. Despite my love for Byun Jung Soo, her hair is horrible in the show. Looks like a mullet. They should've just kept it short instead of using that pony-tail-extension-thingy. Or, is that really her hair these days? And don't even get me started on the green contact lens. It's probably a part of her character, but man it just makes her close ups bad... in a laugh out loud snerk kind of way. The kids are lovable though, of course the Manny too. But that's just Episode 1, where they made the connections for the characters a bit too *sarcastically* conveniently easy. Hopefully, Episode 2 would hook me. X/

Ani,
Your comment reminded me of something I noticed. Many times when they utilize English speaking characters, those people relay their script lines very slowly. At first I thought, why use people who don't speak English very well. But then I had another thought, maybe they are told to speak slowly so that the Korean speaking characters can pick up the cue to say their lines or follow along?

Yes, after watching (and stopped watching) Love Story in Harvard, I could see that slow speech from non-Korean actors was more important than acting skills.
Some of the non-Korean actors in that were HORRIBLE, and when they GOT ANGRY they SCREAMED at poor Kim Rae Won and Kim Tae Hee. I would have run off the set!

49 days premiered (stateside) last night. I don't mind being behind I love having dramas to watch on tv. My sister ( who is new to dramas) said that it seems to be more like drop dead diva than dead like me. thornbirds was on tv on wednesday night and I was watching during commercials on top chef masters ( which has replaced kelly choi) and there was one scene with nonstop crying I never want to be that miserable. There was also a good scene with an actress with cancer. I think I'll give it a try just to get an idea of how things go but from the spoilers someone has been posting it seems like a tiring drama a la sandglass.

same here! I wait till Sunday to watch it with subs and then the OT is already over and I go crazy because simply I wanna yell and talk about that evil women and that adorable second lead guy :(
I'm still waiting for the moment both YuKyung and Youngjo regret what they did to Jung Eun. I want them to suffer and cry and be so miserable. I'm not that evil but they both deserve it, don't they?
I don't get how that evil women act like a caring mother or a good daughter trying to look for her mother and see if she is doing well, as if she really cars, and at the same time is still doing all the bad things she used to do to her (only) frriend. aish, I keep yelling at my screen (chechaaa!? now you are crying!?! I don't buy that so don't ever try )
I feel bad for Kang Woo and I really want him to get the girl but I know that won't happen :(

Hi! G'day!
Thorn Birds...eeeek....evil woman Yukyung!!
I really like Kang Woo. He really seems sincere & cares for JungEun. His challenge to court her made Youngjo propose to JungEun. I know that he's sincere to too but I feel as though he hasn't got over Yukyong, has he? Or its just that he's too busy with business because his goal is to do well & show Yukyung. His frequent business lunch with that fiery business woman might tempt him to betray Jung Eun.
Would the evil woman, Yukyung still want him back?
Maybe Kang Woo will offer his shoulder to JungEun to cry on.
I'm afraid to say more...for now...later. Enjoy!

As much as I want Joo Sang Wook to get the girl, I have to agree that he doesn't seem to love Jung Eung. He obviously cares for her deeply, but he is still affected by what happened with the evil Han PD. He simply cannot end up with that evil woman again... under any circumstances. Gah! my blood pressure just went up again!
Everything else being equal, by next week, I think I will start rooting for Kan Woo.

ORLY? I have only watched it raw, so I don't know how he sounded.
If he likes bad girls, which he has proven repeatedly, you are right.
My biggest fear is that when finds out the Evil One had his baby, he will fall back in love with her because eventually she will redeem herself and be a good oma. Six more episodes, it could happen.
But I feel the same way about Kang Woo being too nice for JE.

I'm so addicted to Thorn Birds is not even funny anymore. I love Young Jo to death. I agree with you all and I think he still doesn't love Jung Eun. And that effing official poster keeps bothering me! The one with Young Jo hugging Jung Eun, but holding Evil Fish Eye Biatch's arm. If you watch it closely is like he is trying to reach EFEB but Jung Eun is interfering between them. I don't like it one bit. It gives me nightmares at night. Also, how much I hate that, besides Twinkle Twinkle, this is the show that takes longer to sub (I really really love you subbers!!).

totally agree! I hate that poster too. It is like the not-so-evil guy get to win the nice girl while at the same time he is still trying to hold onto the so-evil girl!! ugh. She is there because she is stupid enough to believe him and he was selfish enough to let her in. aaaaaaaaaaah it drives me crazy :(
I didn't like both of them in this drama. I can't feel bad or sorry for them. They deserve more.

I'm sorry Jomo I find the lead girl in Thorn Birds terribly annoying. I feel like doing a Sadako on her; Sadako climbs out of the tv right? Well, I feel like climbing INTO the tv, clobbering her on the head and throwing her into a well. I just feel like screaming at her: GET A LIFE! WHY DO YOU LET THESE PPL WALK ALL OVER YOU? ARE YOU A HUMAN BEING OR A DOORMAT????? It's so ridiculous to do the things she does for Evil Woman....I know she's a thorn bird, geez I know they are ALL thorn birds but pleaseeeee I can't take the suffering silently thing anymore argh Just talking about it makes me annoyed! OK gotta go gaze at Kang-ahhhhh for kind, peaceful thoughts. Kang-ahhhhh where are youuuu

Yes, it is very cathartic watching the extremes of good and evil and yelling at the screen.
As someone said before, if you don't enjoy wanting to kill fictional characters, this is NOT the show for you.
But it's so addicting when you do.

quoting dramaok (pretty much everyone's reaction after watching the preview for EP 14 before KBS posted the written preview many, many hours later):
"the main lead is about to be engaged and us the audience dont' now who the groom-prospect is. o.O"
It also doesn't help that we were given a relationship chart that may just be misleading.
So, there's still hope for 2nd male lead to get the girl, I think that's what is driving us bananas.

Really good. Best friends, one is so evil you love to hate & stomp, the other too nice she needs to be bad to deal with her evil best friend who bullies her & allows it.
The evil woman is full of hatred. She grabs the love interest of her naive best friend, frames her about a scandal she created that destroyed the lives of those affected. She dumps responsibility on her naive best friend...a family she could have had. 6 years later, evil friend comes back, stalking & bullying her naive friend. She's secretly jealous & perhaps regret but shock is a better word...that her friend is happy with a family that should be hers. Its now on ep 14...a happy event is about to take place for the nice friend...the evil friend turns up to stop it. Secrets maybe revealed from hereon...the secrets, lies & videotape scandal!!!

...continuing "Thorn Birds" where secret lies & the video tape maybe revealed...
Evil woman, Yukyung got a lot of explaining to reason out why she's stopping YoungJo "getting on" with JungEun.
As much as I'd love the union of YoungJo & "his kiddO", JungEun I'm not convinced yet that he's got the evil woman out of his sytem. Not yet...and I sense betrayal(seduction) with that fiery business woman if they keep on meeting...work, lunch, dinners...
I don't mind Kang woo with Jung Eun, he has shown sincerity & loyalty towards her since they met. I was touched when he asked YJ whose affection is greater for JungEun. YJ for being with her for 6yrs or his(Kangwoo) for missing her & longing for her those 6yrs. This chat prompted or maybe pushed YJ to pursue JE quickly.
Kang woo might still have a chance to show his love & care to JE. If YJ & JE love& trust each other strongly no one can separate them, but...*evil woman on the prowl*

Ji Jin Hee.
I absolutely adore him. He is not the best actor... but there is just something about him....*sigh*
It seems that most of the characters he plays have a boyish quality to them, which I find endearing. However I would love to see him to take on a more complex character. I think if I saw him in a hot kissing scene I would spontaneously combust. That is a risk I'd be willing to take.
Happy Friday!

He starred in The Man Who Can't Get Married (good) and Spotlight (ok). He's been some others that I can't think of right now. Truth be told... I think he is hot. He wears traditional Korean costumes exceptionally well. Yep, he makes me all melty.

I just have to say something about "Dream High."
After watching the last two episodes of "49 Days" I realize who the real hero is in "Dream High." The comments and idea about "allowing the person you love to misunderstand you so you do not have to offer excuses" is exactly what Jin-gook did. He takes a job and leaves "home" so that he can stay in Korea (not go to the USA) to be near his love. He is totally misunderstood and maligned for that.
I agree that the person who plays Sam-dong is the best actor, but I do not feel SD is the hero of the show.

endroinr do you stop watching because you suddenly get two or three dramas for the price of one? or do you reanimate disbelief when you're supposed to suspend it? It's true there are only a few perfectly rounded dramas and even those have a mother who loses her mind and mistakes her rival's son for her son and puts the knaso on her daughters childhood to adulthood love or endless boiler problems and a fire at the factory or a disapproving parent just when the couple reunites after the guy left without a word for 6 months, but you should still stick with them.

Yeah...if you don't like the feeling of loving to hate the evil woman in "Thorn Birds" the feeling of wanting to slap & pulling her hair...that face you love to hate!! But its good...has made my blood warm & circulate more.
*New Tales of Gisaeng* is a drama that does not have evil people...not very damaging as Thorn's...
The dance of GongJu got me watching at the start, Damo captivated the first time he saw Saran, they dated but must not touch! but they fell in love! Their fiery love story begins...
Then there's about parents looking for their kids they gave away or just found out about!
Damo is really cute, cocky but learning to mature through his passion (love) for Saran.
Love the song of Saran that made Damo choke, painfully regretting...

My heart trembled greatly,
You must have had a premonition,

2. Head: HEAD HURTS BABY KISS IT QUICK
3. Nose: NOSE HURTS BABY BLOW IT QUICK

Women fought each other to be the first to get their hands on the latest craze in town, Kang-ah Hot and Waxy life-sized wax figurines.
YY, owner of YY Factory that churns out the toys, said, "I haven't slept for 49 hours now. I've been up making Kang-ah Hot and Waxies since daybreak two days ago. I've got a partner, Ms Pipit, but she only appears on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, so I guess I'll just have to hang on till then."
Meanwhile, outside a 100 metre wall collapsed after a group of women led by a Ms Jomo managed to scale it on their bare hands and feet.
"I never gave up trying," said Ms Jomo. "No wall was going to keep me out."
Another woman, spotting a strange hairdo akin to dried Korean ramien and identified only as MJP, had already latched herself to the 100 metre high glass window pane before she was spotted by security and downed by a tranquiliser shot.

The woman, who sports strange flattened and dry noodle-like locks, can only utter strange sounds like "ahhh" , "kaangg" , "blo" and "jo". The woman reportedly got very agitated when some locals asked her why she got into this state. She started jerking her head, screamed "WHY WHY" repeatedly and then fell into a deep faint.
Hospital authorities are running tests on her to determine her whether her name is "Blojo", a phrase she keeps repeating, and whether her head, which is perpetually tilted at an angle, has anything to do with her amnesia.

LOL, ROF........
Should have seen it coming with the latest craze in town. But after the legend of Mr. Hand Towel and his speedo I honestly don't think we will have another legend to be proud of.
KANG AHHHH!

Hey OT!
Yay for the holidays as it gives more drama watching time!
Loving 49 Days but so far behind :( I hope she finds all the tears in time!
Has anyone read the 'Mary stayed out all night' manhwa? It is actually really good which is depressing due to the wreak of a drama it produced.
^sighs^ should be studying not watching dramas...
Oh well, am going out for my first ever drive with my Mum so hopefully I won't crash...

What kind do you like? Which ones have you seen?
My first one was "A Moment to Remember" back in 2008. It totally HOOKED me on Korean Movies. I understand some people do not like it because it deals with an illness. It is, at least, hopeful and has such wonderful leads. One of the things that amazes me about it is the picture of Jesus knocking at a door on the wall opposite a bedroom. I think the director may be a Christian. The father's reference to Jesus being a carpenter and his analogy on a piece of wood (in the Director's Cut) made me wonder.
Then I watched "The Classic," My Sassy Girl," "White Valentine," "Innocent Steps," "He Was Cool," "Il Mare," etc. etc... So many sweet ones out there!

I try to watch dramas when they are finished and the subs are out, so I'm not so up-to-date, but I can't wait to get to see 49days!! I'm watching wish upon a star, and I'm Loving it!!!! the kids are unbelievable, I laugh out loud with it, then they give you that heart jerking moment to even it out, and I'm a sucker for dramas that make you cry( like "sorry i love you")!!
anyway, have a good Friday!!:)

and then to Indonesian for pippit and pohpohnee
Pikiran Anda tidak tahu alasan mengapa aku tahu itu.
and then, back to English:
Your mind does not know the reason why I know that.
and then, just for fun for the umlauts, to Finnish (strong):

I really think I found THE ONE I have been waiting for.
All the others are beautiful beautiful men, and I like them a lot.
There was something about uri aggy Chul Su's determination, his concern for Noona. And, he is really good with his hands.

LOL
Part of it is because of how we talked about CSW.
(** Sigh - I do love his hands in CH **)
But now that you made me think about it, a man's actions speak louder than his words. Being good with his hands means to me not only that he is skilled, but he does what he says he'll do. I have been lied to, and don't like it!
Disappointed by a man’s promise,
I'll doubt what he tells till he shows.
If his eyes are the window to the soul,
his hands open the door to my heart.

I read a book about why women have affaires.
At reason number one, women say they fell in love "because he listens to me, and he looks at me when I am talking."
If men only knew it were that easy...

jomo143
April 16, 2011 at 6:50 AM
Oooh I see that I should have used more words.
The book wasn't a "How to Seduce a Married Woman" book, but a the psychology behind why marriages fall apart, and how couples stop paying attention to each other.
So when I said, "If men only knew how easy it was..." I should have written, "If husbands only knew how easy it was to KEEP their wives happy..."
Of course, women do the same thing. Men need to feel like ther wives feel THEY are the most important man in her life.
(Too many pronouns) Sounds easy, right?
After having kids, though, her focus switches off the husband. He starts to feel like a fifth wheel. The one on the back of the RAV4.
MJP
April 16, 2011 at 1:03 PM
This reminds me of my phase of reading relational books.
My favorite analogy is "Women are spagetti and men are waffles."
For women everything is connected, but men tend to compartmentalize.
I think the male/female design differences can make it more difficult for husbands and wives (well, just men and women in general) to communicate.
One of my husbands favorite jokes is: "My wife is getting historical!" (Not hysterical, meaning women tend to bring up past events when they are considered unresolved in her mind.) Men don't like to hear the past continually brought up. And some times due to the man's tendency to compartmentalize, he just cannot grasp why the woman is like that. When couples go through communication issues, both are left feeling empty and seek external venues (other people) to fulfill their void.
But you guys probably already know this stuff, huh?
Anyway, the book I am talking about is by Bill and Pam Farrel. Here is a link if anyone is curious.

Just finished marathoning Thank You during the week which I found very heartwarming, with strong strong acting performances across the board. But the ending I found slightly unclear...Any of you folks on OT watched it and care to share your opinions? =D
-SPOILERY-
What's the significance of the penultimate scene where Young Shin asks Dr.Min for reassurance about the single mom being different thing? I'm not sure if it just doesn't translate well into English but I don't really understand the significance of the conversation/ meaningful stares they give each other.....
And also because of the voiceover conversation at the last few moments (with Min Gi Seo calling Bom and Young Shin his miracles) I'm assuming that they ended up together but it's also something that was never really clarified... Any thoughts?
-END SPOILERS-
Despite a somewhat disappointing and rather confusing ending (for me, at least) and some tiny flaws I did find Thank You to be a very fulfilling watch. Jang Hyuk performed with such an intensity, and Gong Hyo Jin was a delight to watch as usual! And Grandpa was AMAZING he made me cry countless times. A drama with seemingly simple plot but imbued with so much heart. I'm glad I picked it up.
On another note, so excited for Best Love and Lie to Me!! =D

from what i remember, i think young shin asking those questions was like her asking him if he can still love her as a single mother of a child with aids. that she is different, but can she still be loved. and his reply was of course yes. so in the end all 3 are happy together, not sure if they're married or just dating. but i liked the ending enough, but i did wish for little more.

April 15, 2011 at 8:27 AM
OK, could somebody 'splain something for me?
The Japanese guy who originally wrote "City Hunter"
(about which I never heard anything before, so I
had no clue as to what to expect) didn't allow his
story to be produced because, I assume, he didn't
approve of the previous "treatments" that were
submitted to him from potential producers.
So Lee Min-ho announces that he's playing the
lead in CH, with the author's approval, AND...THEN...
A WRITER COMES ON BOARD TO WRITE THE SCRIPT.
?????? Huh?
According to the fans, everybody in the cast is too
young for their parts, the story switches to the
President of Korea's "Blue House" instead of the
gritty, crime-ridden streets of Seoul, and according
to what I've read about "City Hunter" somewhere,
LMH is supposed to be.....AN EX-CIA AGENT!!!!
Uhhhhh, I think that you're supposed to be an
American citizen FIRST, before you can become
part of the CIA. Unless you're going undercover
to solve some crime with a Korean-American
connection, this "ex-CIA agent"storyline business
makes no sense and is totally ridiculous.
I wasn't one of the fans who screamed bloody
murder about the age difference between LMH and
Sohn Yi-jin when they started "Personal Taste."
Tell you the truth, I never SAW any age difference
between them at all, while watching PT. LMH may
be only 23, but he certainly looks older than that.
All of the above being said.....why do I have the
feeling that "City Hunter" will be a disaster? Why
was the storyline changed so much from the
original concept? I happen to think that LMH is
an exceptionally talented guy. But he ain't
Rumplestilskin. If you remember your childhood
fairy tales, he was the guy who was able to spin
a roomfull of straw into gold. I think that "City
Hunter" will end up being made up out of straw.
I was really looking forward to CH, but now,
I'm worried. A lot.
Please....... somebody tell me that I'm wrong. :(

I think we have to re-organize our thoughts and not think of any resemblance to CH even though the drama title is CH. I like LMH's acting,so it should be ok. I don't think it will be a huge hit like BOF or Secret Garden (mainly because competition is stiff at that timeslot this time),but it will be decent as the director is good. I just hope for good writing. If the script is good, it will not be a mess.

If you have read the original story and really really really liked it, you won't like the drama.
How could it live up to what you have imagined?
They totally changed things, yes, and remade it into something new.
Will it be better than the orignal? IDK
I never read it so my expectations as a viewer are way different.
Is Lee Min Ho one of the hottest properties out there, and would I watch him stealing my last penny without moving?
YES! (I am doing the happy dance to ahjummabunny's song now!)
This'll be one of the ones I watch unsubbed, subbed, resubbed, postsubbed...

I'm just as miffed a you that they changed everything despite not having read the original 'cuz now it just sounds so boring.....i'm not planning on watching now despite Lee Min Ho because I suspect I will already have too much on my plate and all the other dramas sound so much more fun ........but then but if someone does say that its' good I will check it out later but for right now it's certainly out of my priority list...that said I am hoping it turns out to be a surprise win for LMH and Park Min Young's sake...the ratings prospects seem kinda bleak especially after Runaway and Athena which had similar premises turned out badly

Viewer satisfaction. The ratings game isn't too high on my list. I love Kang Hye Jung, but Ripley might get bad ratings because of she who cannot be named. But it's the most unique plot of the three from what I've read so far.
I'm hoping Jang Nara makes a good comeback - it's the role she was born to play. Yoon Eun Hye too, she really needs it. It's quite a battle of comebacks.

Yeah, I'm sort of fearful that viewers will be turned off by anything SWCBN does, but it's got Kang! Hye! Jung! Plus, some guy from some boy band won't hurt Ripley's chances=) And speaking objectively, the plot does sound wicked interesting.
Yep, that's a lot of comebacks to root for. I wish for YEH's safe return to being awesome too. I'm not familiar with JN's work (saw just a sliver of Successful Girl's Story) but I hope she does well too.
As for Wed-Thurs dramas, my bets are on Best Love. Come on Hong Sisters!

Happy Friday to you,
Happy Friday to you,
Happy Friday, Dear OT Commentors--------
Happy Friday to yyyyyooooooouuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh what a beautiful week of dramas! Oh what little time! I never EVER thought that I would actually find so many good dramas "live" that I would be what I consider "behind" on watching them. It's funny, because I always have the feeling that they are going to be pulled off the internet and I will have nothing to watch. But this phobia is not what I want to talk about!
I learned a lesson from watching the same storyline/show produced and broadcast from different countries. It may be taken from the same content, but each country has a way of taking it and making it their own. Of course, as we all know the kdrama-Boys Over Flowers, jdrama-Hana Yori Dango, tdrama-Meteor Garden.
But the one that I want to compare is near and dear to my heart. The kdrama-Playful Kiss and the tdrama-It Started With A Kiss. PK was the first kdrama I ever watched that made me fall in love with kdramas and find all the Asian dramas.
I never read the manga, so I don't know the original storyline, but I learned this week that even though I thought the Playful Kiss storyline was completely enchanting. I actually like the character developed by the Tdrama writers better.
I never really "fell in love" with BSJ, I could more relate to him as a person. With ISWAK, They made the male lead more human and relatable. I fell in love with the character Jiang Zhi Shu (JZS). He was very emotional and expressed himself with different emotions.
Please let me clarify: my comments have absolutely nothing to do with the actual actors whom I adore (both Kim Hyun Joong and Joe Cheng are great).
I am addressing the writing itself and how the drama writers chose to develop the character of the male lead. It is so vital to the character development between the main leads and the storyline itself.
ahjummabunny, this is what I mentioned in response to your comment in #2.2.2. The big "light bulb" was turned on in my brain when I realized just how important the writers of a drama need to make the character, not just the storyline development itself. My view has been expanded!
Now I am leaving for a bit because my 3 yr old son has colored all over the white table (top, sides, underneath, and legs) with "non-washable" crayons (using mostly a black crayon). I think he is protesting the lack of food in his stomache! Off to make lunch and clean up!

It start with a kiss is wonderful... and you should watch ISWAK 2 as well.. the chemistry between the 2 leads are excellent.... playful kiss along with the specials sort of combined both ISWAK 1 and 2 together.... honestly, the T version is better to my opinion... although I did enjoy k version quite a bit... have not watch the j version.

Happy Friday everyone!! It was such a Beautiful day in NYC yesterday. The first day that really felt like spring. :)
I went to Central Park with my friends and we basically ran around like children through the grass!
The locust trees, magnolia and weeping plum blossoms were all blooming and made the park look like something out of a Pre Raphaelite painting.
We found this hillside completely carpeted with daffodils and bluebells with a flowering cherry tree on the background!
To top it off I have no school for the next week and a half and my birthday is next Saturday! Tee hee! I am Happy! :)

I agree with you MJP. ISWAK is rather long but that's why we could look right into the characters. The first thing I check before deciding whether to watch a drama or not is the story line so it plays a huge factor. But what makes me love a drama is the characters in it. How the actors develop/translanslate those characters then bring them to life.
PK is cute but to me it's a completely a new drama. A Kdrama that has only a slight resemblace to ISWAK. And I love it because of that. To make my point more clear: Boys Before Flower failed to blow me away or even catch my tinies emotion. It has similar story line/characters but I doesn't have the heart/feel that is abundant in Meteor Garden and Hana Yori Dango.
I think a good/interesting story line could turn into a disaster if the actors couldn't create interesting characters.

Anyone else watching New Tales of Gisaeng? What do you think? I think it is okay. The acting is not all that good, IMO. The story is slow and it is like 9,000 episodes long. Despite that.... I am addicted. Go figure. I am totally into the whole Ah Da Mo / Dan Sa Ran story line. I also like Sa Ran's younger sister and the cute boy with the two tone hair. I actually dig her dancing scenes, they amuse me! I can't believe it is only been 24 episodes and they have had two deaths already. I actually liked those characters, they seemed to push the story along.

I love that he is in the Gisaeng house now. Why oh why did Son Ja do that to his hair? It looks better parted on the side than in the middle though. Here! I'm a big fan of New Tales...Damo is really cute! I got use to the way he delivers his dialoque...I fits well with his cocky ways...like always wanting to get things done as he thinks...
I like his persistence to pursue Saran to make up for his mistakes & regain her trust. The problem is Saran will now more bad points for being a Gisaeng in the eyes of Damo's parents. I can't wait for her real parents to find her to give her more confidence with Damo. I was so angry with her greedy ambitious stepmom. for bullying & pushing her to be gisaeng.I'm touched with Dongjos love for her.
DongJos dance at the start made me watch...Saran & Damo's love affair, birth secrets lost & found.
Love the dance of Dongjo in ep 23/24? with SonJa. I love Sonja. Cute & nice! hope to see more of him in future.

I'm a romance novel fan (don't you hate it when people deride romance novels and think every one of them is a Danielle Steele novel?), though I've been too busy to read any this past year. I'm more into European historicals (Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, Connie Brockway, Loretta Chase...), but plan to check out other subgenres one day.
And yes there really is something just so rawr abt Jang Hyuk. *rawr*! =X =D I loved Please Teach me English!
I have horrific spring allergies usually starting by the last days of April continuing into like the 3rd week of May when my eyes are either itching like crazy, sticky, or filled with so much gunk that everything becomes blurry.
I'm trying to enjoy the nice weather too before all that happens, but it sucks how I have to stay in a lot to get assignments done for the end of the semester.

I LOVE regency era! They tend to be so very cliche but I still cant help but fall for the storylines.
My favorites have to be the marriage of convinience types, reforming rakes, brooding heros (but a no no to Healthcliff >_<), and charming beta males. Go figure; it's the very same traits found in many a k-drama hero. It must be universal :D
Some of my favorites have to be Garwood, Beverley, Kinsale, Lindsay, Foley, Gracie and Enoch.

So someone mentioned on the last thread about the casting of Kang Ji Hwan and Yoon Eun Hye in the upcoming drama Lie to Me and their kissing scene and it got me to thinking that a lot of Kdramas don't seem to do kisses right. I am finding that the few T-dramas I gave watched all seem to have actual kisses. What is the hottest kiss (and by extension, hottest/sexiest couple) in a Kdrama? I mean a kiss/couple that makes you swoon....I think mine would be City Hall's Cha Seung Woo and Kim Sun Ah....the attraction between them was great. I liked Creating Destiny's couple however, the attraction did not really build well.....

emm for me hot kiss in k drama means both side have to be active participant in the kiss and please not just touching lips. I hate that just-touching-lips-one-side kiss, better watching erotic hand-holding, hot eye-glancing, and romantic light kiss than that. UGH

Having done and in-depth review of many kissing scenes during my kdrama viewing days, (purely for my own enjoyment...I mean academic pursuits*cough*cough*) I feel somewhat qualified to respond to this.
It's hard to beat CSW & KSA in City Hall. The kiss scenes between YEH & GY in Coffee Prince are classic. I melted at the kiss between PSH & KNJ in the last episode of QOR.
The Tdrama kisses are generally acknowledged to be better, but I do think Kdramas are beginning to catch on to the concept that there's nothing romantic in watching a man kiss the heck out of a fence post.
So, there you have it, my purely voyeuristic...errm professional opinion.

I was a T-Drama Addict before I became a K-Drama addict and you're definitely right on with this one. After making the switch, I noticed that a number of K-Drama hallmarks are missing in T-Drama and vice-versa. This is what I've noticed the general trend to be, but of course there are always exceptions:
- KDrama kisses tend to be chaste and the girl rarely responds. It's almost never open mouthed. TDrama kisses tend to be full on make-out status most of the time.
- KDrama wrist-grab occurs much less frequently in TDrama though it does happen.
- TDrama comedy tends to be much more slapstick and ridiculous (something KDrama fans seem to have trouble getting use to, but to each their own right?). KDrama has a lot of meta jokes which is sorely missing from TDrama.
But anyway, TDrama has hit a huge slump in recent months, so it's kind of hard to compare on the same level as the better produced Kdramas currently. Hopefully things will turn around with "Love You" "Sunshine Happiness" and "Combat Butler".
I know "Love You" aka "Drunken to Love You" is supposed to be in the same flavor as "Fated to Love You" (same director & writers?) but it just doesn't seem as racy as its predecessor. However, Joseph Chang is just racy sexy in general. So I guess that's sufficient.

there's a definite slump in T-dramas. They tend to be more open in terms of sex, singles culture, and general lifestyle but I find the drama as a whole to be very generic, with a cheap day-drama look.
I love dramas, of all sorts, but T-dramas tend to blend the K-daily makjang too much lol. There's one too many "Oh, hero doesnt know he has a child/mommy problems/secret brother/etc, falls in love with new girl, angst angst angst" thing going.
There are some hot k drama kisses. Off the top of my head, 9 end 2 outs, Robbers, Thousand Years of Love, Capital Scandal. <--- I think they prize innocence in a girl more though.

You are right about the wrist grab, however, T-Dramas seem to specialize in ARM grabs! so freaking annoying... one character (the lead girl in smiling pasta, a T-drama) actually told the lead guy off in a scene, for always dragging her around and that it made her feel like a dog. I almost cracked up because at that moment, it was like she just read my mind!
What exactly are meta jokes? Metaphorical? I am not sure I can say that I agree if that's the case. That might be because I don't speak Korean and meanings do get lost in translation.
One thing I will say is that T-drama fashion/living seems to more closely echo real life. For example, in Down with Love, the characters clothes are down to earth and reflective of their status AND they repeat clothes whereas in dramas like Smile, You (K-Drama), even though Lee Min Jung's character lost all her belongings and worked crappy jobs, she still had a new coat almost every other day...what the heck? Where did she get the money for it, and more importantly, where the heck did she keep all her clothes in that tiny house?
It is so distracting seeing all the clothing changes (and the shoes) in K-dramas which don't fit with the character's situation that I often really enjoy when they have to wear uniforms as part of the character like in Coffee Prince (loved it)

Most Korean dramas kisses that I've seen were limp. Usually the man's lips kissing the woman's lips without moving. Limp because the woman won't even move her arms to hug the man kissing her. A kill joy to romance.
Recently, I've seen more passionate kissses in kdramas. Passionate because they are both engaged in the act hugging & moving their lips.
In Hong Gildong, there's a scene where Jang Geun seuk kiss the sleeping Sung Yuri's character...in an interview Yuri was surprised when JGS opened his mouth while kissing her! There's more to that...from youtube "Hong Gil dong cast interview"
LBH & SHK had passionate kisses in "All In".

ahjummabunny,
I want to ask you something, since this is RAW. The end of episode 8 and starting out episode 9 has these lines (warning this is what I think I am hearing):
Kim Tae Hoon as Park Chi Young says, "Deega boonday saguaranya? Deega boonday!!!" And throws a punch.
Hyun Woo Sung as Byun Kang Soo recovers from punch and replies, "Da? Koo you young ya koonja!"
Kim Tae Hoon as Park Chi Young looks shocked for moment then questions,"Koonja?" and snickers.
What happened here? What is a Koonja?

I have no idea. I'm not fluent a 2 year old probably has more vocabulary than I do. If you're hearing with a drama-keen ear I think it's yakun because the guy throwing the punches seems to be asking what are you saying about loving or who are you saying you love. the ja/cha is throwing me off. I think if I knew what was going on I could figure it out better.

I LOVE J-drama, of the Kimura Takuya circa early 00s variety lol.
J-drama, if done right, mixes the best of Korean storyline with T-drama chemistry.
But, being more of a romance [with a happy ending] fan, K-drama/Bollywood has kept its hold on me. For some reason, J-dramas tend to end more tragically, are more unsatisfyingly sad than K-dramas can be (even the tragic K-dramas).
Maybe it's a cultural thing? Or maybe that's the formula that has been done for ages and works?
But, I'm more of a "Pride" "Propose Brothers" or "Nobuta wo Produce" fan than the "ProDai" or "1 Litre" type.
I also like the "Ikebukuro west gate park" or "GTO" style dramas....

Started watching Manny too. Too be honest I only picked it up because of Seo Ji Suk haha.
Totally flipped when I saw little Jung Da Bin as Eun Bi. Has it really been that long since Wonderful Life?! Overall, I think it's okay. I'm really getting no chemistry between the two leads though. I think he has more potential to be with the older sister (who is killing it!)
One series that I'm really really into though is Listen to my Heart. Saturdays cannot come sooner!! I honestly don't see how people found it slow to begin with. To be honest I think the pace is amazing. Great setup for what could happen in the future. My crack drama of the week, I think more so than 49 days.

So far Listen To My Heart is AMA-ZING!! Granted, it's only been episodes and KJW hasn't even come out yet but not one second of it has disappointed me so far. All the kids are amazing and as always, Jang Bo Seok is nailing his character. This drama has a lot of heart and I'm all praises for it.

Yeah, the older sister seems fiery and has her hands full... of chiseled models. > , <" Isn't E03's preview all about accusing her sexual harassment? The manny does look like he has more chemistry titrating with the older sister. The younger sister/divorcee is living in oblivion and more whiny for now.
The universal law of any drama, isn't it all about the phase of transformation? The older sister is already a swan, whereas the younger sister is dormant in her ugly duckling phase awaiting for her swan makeover. And for some men, they fall for women changing for the better like it's one of his achievements in life to a trophy wife, right?

Well put! There is a lot of improvement when it comes to the younger sister, but I'm willing to stick this one out for a while at least. And Choi Jung Yoon really isn't a bad actress, it's just her character that needs to toughen up a bit lol

I like the manny in Manny. I like the lead actor...I've seen him in a few long series dramas. He's cute so I keep watching. I don't mind the fiery character of Janice. Being a model she's suppose to be fiery & arrogant! But I don't like it when she sneaks to get him in a tutu & post it. Childish! Might backfire on her. The client who chose manny to be the model for the product might cancel the contract!
I'm not really keen with whom he pairs in love...the mom is awkward with her ways. Maybe she will turn to a swan later with manny around.

Tee hee! I am Happy! :)

Okay I was walking to the mall and I saw this really cute couple walking in my direction. They were Asian decent and fashionable and holding hands! I thought they were so cute. Like they walked straight out of a fashion magazine.
BUT upon further inspection they actually weren't holding hands, he was holding HER WRIST and they were walking together like that!!!!!
I was like "huh?" I thought that only happened in kdramas, not real life.
Hence my confusion.
I don't know if their background was Korean, but to anyone who has lived in Korea, (or Japan, China, Taiwan) does this wrist grab thing actually happen in real life?

Here;s the Yahoo answers:
"Sam Soon" is not a funny name; it is just an ugly, old-fashioned name and that's why she hates her name so much in the show.
Like the other answerer mentioned, any name with "Soon" was common back in the 1930s or 1940s. Plus, "Sam" means "three" or "third" and she got her name "Sam Soon" because she is a 3rd daughter of her family. Her grandpa was so upset about having three girls in a row and named her in a tacky way.
If you are an English speaker, think of names like "Gertrude", "Mildred" or "Eleanor". Apparently, they are not so pretty names for young ladies.
