Happy Friday!! I am so excited for open thread!

I watched a little of Midas and the duo this week. I preferred midas but I don't want to see lee min jung sad ( I just watched her as a well loved woman in smile, you) and the last drama that was like Midas lost it's lead actor to suicide ( a man's story/slingshot rip park yong ha!)
I'm also watching king geunchogo, but it got to part where I think I might stop. But it's only because I like things to go smoothly all the time so I probably will stay until it starts to plateau again. Have you seen city hall, will it snow for christmas? I'm going to watch will it snow again sometime soon because I'm introducing my sister to kim so hyun she's young enough where he can be her "star to watch". I also recommend Lawyers of the great republic of Korea.

I'm right there with you on the drama slump... I started like four different shows, none of them were doing it for me. I am two episodes into City Hall, it's not as charming as I had hoped but I'm sticking it out because I heard it gets better. Some of my favorites to watch over and over are Personal Taste, What's Up Fox, Secret Garden, or The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry.

The woman who still wants to marry is awesome! The first few episodes are a bit off but there is really good acting in this drama. I feel like it is a treasure I found so I don't usually recommend it. It really is dear to my heart.

I tried starting something old coz i dint wanna go through the horrible waiting period every week [especially after Secret Garden] and started Gourmet. Meh...not even as food-y as Pasta....maybe i should get past 4-5 eps...but i found it too slow...Maybe ill finish it later.

Now im only following We Got Married [not really a Drama] and started on Hwang Jin Yi

GOURMET is more foodie than pasta. As far as food porn goes maybe pasta wins out but gourmet's story is better and KIM RAE WON cannot be beat! I loved him in this one. Please stick with Gourmet.

I guess i have to get past the first few eps....and the not so good looking hyung of KRW's....but Ill stick to it....for KRW and you guys....and the FOOD!

I was so bored with Pasta I simply abandoned it 8 episodes in. The main couple was so cute, but there was no conflict. I thought the heroine was too similar to Kim Samsoon, and I know kdramas love to beat a trope to death but with nothing else going on I felt like I'd seen the show before AND done better.

Pasta is good if you like guys who are jackasses. I certainly loved how abusive he was. Fortunately I've stopped dating and started therapy! Well not really but there is something compelling about the "chef" and hyo jin's character had no development. Which seemed true to life. She didn't really become a better chef, she chose a man just like her father which is exactly what happens in real life.

0

i think you nailed it for me, ajummabunny. I liked that the chef was so passionate he was a total ass to anyone not meeting his standard. I like Gordon Ramsey for the same reason (& anyone who thinks Ramsey just likes to belittle people should see him on the Brit reality show Faking It. He mentored a guy running a Burger cart into pretending to be a top chef and ultimately put him through culinary school after the show was over). I DID marry a guy like my dad and long story short, it didn't work out. Maybe I resented her lack of ambition. I dunno...

@ahjummabunny

"Pasta is good if you like guys who are jackasses."

Funny!

0

Hah I thought I'm the only one who think the chef is totally jackass. He killed the show for me, though I still finished Pasta. I don't know why.

Yep CH gets better and better as you watch later episodes so I highly recommend you to stick with it! You won't regret it ;)

City Hallers!!!!

First of all I have a bone to pick with Samgetang. Thanks to you I found City Hall but I have to disagree with you on one thing because like Jomo said, after episode 4, it had 'no perfect pausing'!lol. Goes without saying that all is forgiven Samgetang as you gave me a great gift. It is indeed a Masterpiece. So eventhough I have been super tired, this glorious piece of work made my 5 days a rollercoaster ride filled with laughter, anticipation, excitement, love, swooning, cheering and ... tears... both happy and sad tears. It didnt matter if I wasn't well rested as I was high on CH crack! Jomo wrote 'the only problem is that it ended'... I am not laughing at ahjummabunny's reply anymore as I would like to ask too.. why did it end? why??? I wholeheartedly agree there should be a spinoff with babies, President Jo Gukie, First Lady King Kong, the unforgettable inauguration dance *fans herself* etc etc etc

My journey started unimpressed by the premise. I hate Politics! Initially I doubted the writers and production could pull off a good drama out of Politics. It will either be too technical, too fluff to have substance, too boring, very difficult landscape for a 20 episode drama. I hardly know Cha Seung Won but I love KSA so I presevered. Episode 1-4, a mere 10th grade MR had loads of substance, not only potential winner of fish pageant but I could see her inner strength and pure heart to become something alot more and I love stories where a woman triumphs over adversity & injustices. The comic timing, good use of politics and super talented actor mysterious hottie JG carried me through to Ep 4. Episode 5 was when I truly cared for all the characters especially our hero & heroine. The chemistry is undeniable. Samgetang I concur.. sizzling is THE word

What makes this drama resonate to me personally is Jo Guk. I'm bored of the fairy tale cliche of chaebols and perfect prince charming who never did anything wrong because hey thats not reality is it? In the beginning JG arrogance (due to him being wounded in early life) as well as ambitiousness & complicated character...I just love that..as I could relate to that. He is such a cool guy but gets shaken to the core by a harmless MR. Its refreshing, lovely and definitely cute. He is believably wise, intelligent and so suave as a politician heavy weight but not perfectly so, he does make mistakes and he is not all good guy as well. Uncovering little by little, JG's inner core of romantic, sensitive, protectiveness, humor and soft heart is mind blowingly delightful. I am totally taken in by Jo Guk! I could write a thesis on this but that would include spoilers. In short, Im Hooked Lined and Sinkered on JG!!! TOTALLY!LOL

My all time favourite is Coffee Prince, it too tackled a difficult premise and made it flow like poetry... beautiful! Dont ask me to choose between them as they are like my children. City Hall has excellent script, I respect that in a drama. Linda165, best lines in Kdrama history! Hands down Agree!!! I love the references by the great thinkers that are peppered throughout the drama... it makes it legitimate, realistic, thoughtful, meaningful and all together powerful ... so many scenes are pregnant with meaning because of it and some didnt even need reference to make my heart skip a beat. And trust me, this drama has tortured my heart that i doubt my heart will ever be the same again!!!

Sams, I'm nodding to everything you have written. So3, words fail me too that's why I had to draft this before posting.

MJP, Ambie - Just do it ALREADY!lol. Its that good that the after effects of this is that I downloaded the whole drama, the awesome ost, rewatched it again, copied to disc & posted to my mum for mother's day gift and have a dedicated folder called City Hall!!!! Lordie!!! lol

Samgetang & all ... Kamsahamida for this great gift that reaffirms my love for Kdramas!!! Here's to many good fridays like this!

ahjummabunny, where do I sign? How many times can I sign? lol . I am head over heels in love with CH! I wish I watched it sooner as I have been following the threads and its been mentioned a few times now. Thank you for encouraging me to watch it. I had so many good times/scenes/sayings in this drama!

So3, Trust me, you wanted to read my post, I was longing to share new baby! I refresh DB so many times today!lol. I worked the whole weekend, no rest day until wednesday. So I was practically cursing my bad luck as I had to contend with reading Dramabean's recaps after watching the episode!! So every free time I had at work I was transported to Inju City! It was painful but so worth it in the end!

Yes , you get lost for words when you want to describe CH! I totally understand as I want to give praise to so many of the scenes that I cant make coherent sentence out of it and also dont want to spoil it for others who haven't yet watched it.

Definitely will keep growing in my heart! Greatest Kdrama Love Story Ever Told! So much to say!!! lol

I refreshed DB like a million times today to wait for OT, and so, we can talk about CH, lol.

I actually discovered DB pretty recently, because i was searching for CH recaps in english (after reading all chinese recaps i have not had enough...) and of course, i found the gems of samsooki's recap and i have to say, even all the comments worth reading!

A k-drama with best lines produced recaps with best lines and comments with best lines. It's simply amazing!!

I only discovered CH back in 2010, so already like a year later. One of the greatest regrets would be, as mentioned elsewhere, the inability to get the OST and also the Director's cut DVD :( But honestly speaking, I cannot imagine myself watching CH real-time, 2 episodes per week? That will totally kill me and made me a zombie wanting for more and more...so, perhaps discovering CH late is good for my mental well-being, lol

0

So3 ! me too so excited to talk about CH! I want to get my hands on those Special Edition DVDS! I surfed and found really good english sub CH, it even had all the political, korean jargon as well as english lyrics! I also found the ost online and been listening to it everyday , even now! *blush*

Samsooki's recaps were my refuge from work realities! I was cramping in 3 recaps per lunch via mobile so I probably need an eye test soon! lol

Exactly my sentiments, I am so grateful it is all ready for the picking and not still airing. I would be so desperate it wouldnt be pretty! keke... I didnt need to look far for soompi thread and photos of CSW! Gawd his voice & Greek God Stature kills me! Jo Gukie!!!!!! lol

0

And fellow City Hallers - I forgot whether I've mentioned here in DB, that there is actually a fan page on facebook created by Taiwanese for CH. There's a TV channel in Taiwan that keeps playing CH and if I didn't lose track of the number of replays they've run CH 6 times in a row already!!

And apparently the admin of that fan page has contacts in Korea too so they started an activity - collecting postcards from fans in TW as a "petition for CH season 2" to Writer Kim! I surely hope voices from fans would reach Kim... I mean, fans look forward to a reunion of the whole CH team for another drama, not necessarily the CH2 (since CH is already a classic itself).

It may sound crazy but as a fan of CH, i think the action by this FB group is totally justifiable!! :D

LOL - and the passionate CH fans from Taiwan made me suddenly feel an intimacy to them XD

They even found a way to have their local CD importer to talk to Korea in order to get copies of the OST - which by the time I got so hooked with the drama and was desperately searching for it, got all sold out :(
(like one of the greatest regrets in my life, u know)

Hats off to Taiwan CH fans haha

In case you are interested, here's the link:
http://www.facebook.com/cityhallch32

Mind you that it's in Chinese and there are info on other k-drama played on that tv channel (it's a page started by that tv station i guess)

0

Wow! I didnt know there is city hall facebook!!! I went to have a look! Looks like we are not the only ones crazy over CH! Where do I sign the petition and send off my postcard? I am impressed! But if CSW & KSA is not the main leads that it would be a lost and wont have the same effect!

Required fields are marked *

They were actually collecting real postcards (the theme is like inviting the whole crew to taiwan to film part of CH 2, haha, they're really crazy but i admire their passion, seriously) and i think the activity ended sometime in March. They even helped arranged a fan meeting with CSW in taiwan in coming July so I'm hopeful that the postcards will reach Writer Kim.

And i remember the admin of this facebook group did say that their main goal is to
1. Have the "golden foursome" - Writer Kim, PD Shin, CSW and KSA to form a drama again; and
2. Have the team go to Taiwan to film (say part of an episode or something like that)

so people (including us! hehe) do want to watch some more sizzling scenes of CSW and KSA!! rest assured! ;)

Will keep you guys updated if I see other news on this FB page :)

Required fields are marked *

First off, QD!!!!! Yeyyyyyyyyy! Welcome! to! the! City Hallers!!!!!! So glad you liked/loved CH ;-)

Same here. I just discovered CH very late in the game. I heard about it last year 2010, year after it has been shown in SKorea, but only got to watch it this year when there was a slump in kdramas, fresh off MP crack. And my interest was just refreshed because I saw CSW's Armani CF, where he was gorgeously washing his face, back in Ockoala's blog. And I was intrigued by this hunk that looks so dangerous and yet so gently soaping his cheeks...what can be more sexy than that? Kidding aside, it intrigued me of what sort of leading man he would be having this curious mix of danger and gentility. So it led me to CH! Thank God for the kdrama slump...because I've discovered GOLD in CH along with Samsooki's wonderful recaps.

And yes, all the CH lovers here are anxiously waiting for your update....I love Coffee Prince, too. One of the very best. But I dont know if I love CH now more than CP, hehe. Have you watched SKKS? If not, then check that out, too...cos it swims in the same big huge ocean as CH with cool friendships to boot. Same as CH there is a story bigger than the leads' love story which makes the love story more amazing and deeper for me compared to, for example, having the story revolving solely around the romance angle.

You are so right! Jo Guk is an amazing hero/anti-hero figure. He is not perfect and yet he is not a jackass altogether, haha! It is great to see his journey within the drama from anti to hero and how the heroine helped him through that journey without really planning for it/manipulating events/bitching about it. She just stayed true to herself. Dont we all want to have the same effect on our men...without the need to nag them about it? Haha! We always hope we can be just who we are, the best of who we are, and the guys will be smart enough to pick up the hint/cue and go from there to enlightenment, growth and self-realization, hehe. We hope our love will be as trong as Mi rae's...able to transform a Jo Guk. I guess that's the hidden/unspoken secret to why CH is well-loved by so many smart women (ahem).

Samgetang,

Love! Definitely love! lol I like My Princess but I love CH! heh ! I must look up that Armani CF! lol !!! You should watch Sky Vega CF of CSW! He really is the Korean equivalent to Greek God! I know what you mean, as he really looks 'dangerous' yet he has such good comic timing! He can pull angst and melo too because he has melted my heart with his puppy lovesick I-want-to- protect-her-but-cant look . He can pull of goofiness and yet looks so fine!!! D*mmit! If I was a man I wish I was CSW. If I had a brother, CSW, If I had a chingu I wish it was CSW...if I had a son...you get the picture! lol All because of City Hall. 'This is the result' ;)

I havent watched SKKS. I hear the ending is not good so I am putting it off but since Samgetang sunbae thinks I should give it a go, then I should but not this week.. I need sleep! lol ! Im also still doing reruns of CH so I am going to bask in MR&JG love gooeyness for awhile ! lol

Its great this love story doesnt have someone sick, someone who doesnt want speak out, someone who is bitching. I find that is so refreshing. Much more believable. I love the way you describe their love journey... its sweet and powerful. Love your every word!

I guess that’s the hidden/unspoken secret to why CH is well-loved by so many smart women (ahem). LOL Defo! I daydream about being JG parenthesis, not comma, not period but his parenthesis *melting*

What sets it apart from some really good dramas out there is the heart & soul of this drama. Heart because the love story is powerfully real, It shows how a man is slowly changed for the better because of his love of MR. Soul is because it has a moral compass, politics didnt have to be dirty. It showed that LOVE is more powerful than FEAR or GREED. Love conquers All!

With this I leave you with one of the many scenes I love...

MR - On a night's dream
we went on a trip together
On a night's dream
we held hands
One night
we hugged each other
One night
we fell asleep together
So one night...
like today,..
we broke up like this...... (that had me tearing!!!)

Off to rewatch CH again!

Hahaha! I know! You see and want to see CSW in everyone :-) He is like a Greek god after all ;-)

Yup, check out that Armani CF -- vanity in men never looked so smokin' hot :-) I'd definitely look for that Sky Vega CF, thanks mucho.

Park Hae Young and Jo Guk are actually cut from the same cloth, so to speak. They are both brilliant strategists as the diplomat and politician, respectively. But CSW was the better actor that's why his character has greater/deeper impact because he made JG more humane/more in touch with his feelings. And maybe his character is the more flawed and so that's why it resonates to the audience more. While PHY is one breath away from that appeal cos he was the more cool and collected of the two. But perhaps thats what you would expect from a diplomat and a politician. The latter would be more passionate sometimes even emotional while the former more stable and steady. If I remember right, the writer of CH is the co-writer of MP so maybe that's the reason for the similarity also.

Moral compass, you are so right! We dream that the world will be a better and more just and righteous place. And in this kdrama, we see that dream become a reality because of one woman's integrity, authenticity and sacrifice and because of her love for Inju City and one man. That's a powerful message there. Sometimes we are disgusted with politics not because of politics per se but because of the officials who shamelessly abuse their power/influence. And in this show we see in Mi Rae someone who we can all root for, depend on, rely upon and who has no other ulterior motive but to serve. How we all wish our public servants will be like her.

If this appeals to you then SKKS, even with its moderate ending, is one great kdrama that is cut in this same mold. Hope you will watch it next! ;-) have a good rest this weekend so you'll have the energy to watch it next time. The OST is as riveting as CH's by theway :-) I listen to both OSTs to this day :-)

From time to time, I listen to KBS Radio over the internet. And I've noticed that some of their entertainment stories copy Dramabeans articles, word for word!

On another note, KBS Radio stories & commentaries are often "nationalistic" in tone. It is sometimes painful to hear the DJs & reporters talk in this way. It reminds me of speeches scripted from countries where the media is controlled by the government (e.g. not as bad, but similar tones to N. Korea).

That being said, I enjoy the radio station & listen to it regularly. I just have to bite my tongue when I hear the stories ^^

have a wonderful Friday everyone!

Happy Friday everyone! If anyone lives in the DC area, you may be interested in the Freer and Sackler Galleries' Korean Film Festival starting April 8th. a lot of interesting movies are showing, like both versions of the Housemaid, Oki's Movie and Poetry. Plus all movies are free! I'm thinking of going to see those, as well as Secret Reunion with Kang Dong-won and Song Kang Ho.

I'm planning to catch up on 49 Days this weekend. I like the tone and the pacing - even though it's less comedic than most other dramas i've enjoyed, i feel like it's not too heavy and deals with death/mourning in an interesting way.

also, if anyone's looking for drama DVDs, there's a massive k-drama sale going on on Yesasia - a lot of box sets reduced to $40, $60 and $70.

(i don't work for either place, just passing on information).

hope everyone has a great weekend!

Justine, agree, it does complicate and confuse people, as they are 2 different people in the story but as I said I am totally bias to this as more of GY all the better! LOL.

I thought it was "adorable" that GY's character imagined himself as the love interest whenever he "flash-backed" to replay her story in his head. Almost as if he liked her from the moment he saw her or he always imagines himself the lead in any story.

I like that idea MJP! That would be a sweet romantic take on it! I would like to think Ji woo imagined Gi Joon as Jong Wook when flashing back. Ah!!! Sweet~~

0

Oh yes thats such a sweet idea! I loved that Gongyoo could play both characters so well- the suave, charismatic Kim Kong Wook and the dorky, perfectionist and slightly awkward role.
One of my favourite parts is when Gongyoo cried after walking in the forest!! Hahaha. That was hilarious.
Wasnt really a fan of him before, but now I'm definitely one! :)

0

MJP.... that is exactly what I thought. That he put himself in place as the love interest. As for the end though, I think he was truly there.

Last I looked this movie in on Dramacrazy subbed in Japanese... not English yet.

Oh oh oh! It is there in English now. Yay!

MyAsianCinema.. go there they have it with Subs...!

0

I want Gong Yoo and Im Soo Jung to start dating in real-life already. Haha.

I don't think there's any mysterious reason why they used GY in her flashbacks... (Spoilers ? ahead)
I think they just wanted to add the suspense that maybe he is the first love. And making GY the guy in the romantic Indian flashbacks just ups the romance because their chemistry is sweet and their kiss scene (in the viewers' head) is HOT.

I definitely think there is a lot going on in Midas. Has it been revealed who tried to kill do hyun in the car crash? I only saw half of episode 1 and episode 3/4. I think the woman is the one that did it and is do hyun trying to outfox her or is he really joining hands with her? It 's like a smile, you and giant reunion on that show!

I think that Midas pales considerably when compared to A Man's Story. It doesn't have that oomph, that passion, that complex investigation of the human condition. I think Midas, in tone, is not classier but more transparent?

To me it feels like there's too much of the same thing. Same scenes, same conversations, same level of disconnect across the board. I mean, actors are emoting to their own characters, but there's a definite disconnect between all of the characters, as if each person is partaking in a one-man play in a plot-hole ridden road. I'm still tuning in hoping for some kind of turn of events but it's just not happening.

No class today! Sucks that I actually suffered a 1 hr commute and a trek through inclement weather to get there because I forgot to check my school email this morning. Now I'm just waiting out the 3 hrs that would have been class time until it's time to go to work. Can't wait to go home and rewatch 49 days. I haven't been this interested since Secret Garden.

And it has become clearer and clearer to me that my mom has an odd taste in kdramas and k-actors. One of her favorite dramas is Hello Miss and she thinks Song Seung Hun is a good actor. And she doesn't know who Won Bin is! I wonder if there really are some people who don't know who Won Bin is just like how some people were clueless abt how Son Ye Jin is a big deal.

I didn't know who won bin was until about 7 months ago. And I didn't even recognize him in the cuckoo rice cooker commercial. I saw him in Friends. What else has he done? Speaking of won bin, is there a holiday special that stared So ji sub as a fake boyfriend for a girl who got dumped on New years/Christmas? Or is he the boyfriend that dumped her? What is it called and can anyone help me find it? It's an sbs drama because I saw it late night but I couldn't stay awake even though it looked awesome!

Happy Friday to Dramabeans Peeps!
We made it through another week -Yay Us!

I just finished Coffee House.
It made me cry a lot - not a warm and fuzzy love story, but more realistic. The OST reminded me a little of Kim Sam Soon, and a little of Coffee Prince.

Coffee House also made me want to pack in my 9-5 job and become the writer buried deep inside of me.
If I had enough money to spend a year drafting and perfecting a novel or two, would I be able to come up with something worth sharing with the world?

My daughter offered to sharpen my pencils, make my coffee and be a moving clay model for me.

I loved the last few episodes of Giant. They had great kangmo /jung yeong tension. I think they jumped the shark ( although that is not really true because all korean dramas jump the shark so to not jump the shark would be shark jumping in korean drama) when they added a semi-love story for seung mo and then axed him! GRRRR! I loved seung mo and I hoped he could be at piece without dying.

Required fields are marked *

I also loved the ending of Giant! Oh boy, did I cry when Seung Mo went into the operating room. I was really sad they killed him, but maybe they thought the ending would not be as memorable. I am just glad they didn't do the same with Minwoo (*squeals*). He and Miju had a sweet ending. The writers never tried to justify or redeem Jo Pil
Yon, which was great in my opinion and he sure went out with a bang!

I cried for a full hour after Giant ended.
Even now, thinking of SM dancing with Miju and his bro makes me weepy..(there I go again...)
But he was a tragic character from the get-go, and his life's goal was met. He died 'successful."

My daughter, who tends to laugh at me anyway, kept shaking her head and saying, "How can you cry this much over a fake person?"

I think it did have a satisfying ending, and, yes, there were a few, lather rinse repeat eps, overall it gave good drama feelings and JOO SANG-WOOK!
Favorite "outfit" was Ep 54 with Minwoo-shi in a taupe jacket, emerald green sweater vest, dark maroon tie!!
It was like Colin Firth's Darcy in the green coat-tails all over again.

0

First of all, awesome daughter you have! :)

I have the same dream - I would to go off and write, if possible. I wouldn't even care if no one wanted to read my stuff, I'd just want to have that freedom to create.

Yay Coffee House! I loved, loved, loved that drama. It had its own pace, told its own story, and the lead couple was phenomenal. They were just so well-matched. I felt so satisfied with the ending of that drama. :)

Well, thank you, MJP, I appreciate the kind words.
I actually completed a 60K novel.
Which means I successfully put a story together into 30 chapters. So that was good.
The problem is that it is BORING.

With work, home and kids, it was very difficult to find time to get into the zone - where the words start to flow from that majik place you don't get to without a LOT of concentration. I could do the quick dialog, and get the characters across the room with a cup of coffee in hand, but I didn't find the HEART of the characters.
Now that I have been exposed to hundreds of hours of Kdramas, I think I understand what is MISSING better.

My next step is to go through the story and look for ways to make my readers feel for the characters.
Plus, inserting a love triangle where there hadn't been one.

Maybe I will take this as a challenge to stop talking about it and start DOING it. :) It is written to the 13 - 14 year old girl level.

I am working on a book with a Korean hero maybe I will write it as a drama

0

Jomo,

It sounds like you are half way there! I hope you can treat your story like a "living document" where it is always ready to change and travel into the unknown. Don't be afraid! You can do it!

Has your daughter read it? If so, what are her thoughts? Our kids our sometimes our best editors.

Required fields are marked *

She did like it, and helped and is helping me to make sure it is not "written down" to someone her age. Also with the dialogue. She would tell me "Kids don't talk like that."

We gave it to some of her friends, who never finished it. This made me realize the story in the second half needs a lot of work.

It is a time travel story into the early 60's, so I had to be accurate and interesting. Not easy!!

0

The 60's that is original!!! Was "Laugh In" around at that time? What was in fashion? Women's rights? Job market? What was school like? Segregation? Busing?

Are you bringing futuristic technology into the 60's? How do you get a 14 or 15 year old girl to be interested in history?

This is why I am not a writer... I keep thinking of movie titles. :-0

0

I wrote a children's book once. It was about a greedy rabbit. It started out tamely enough, but halfway through the rabbit kinda took over and the story became rather mad. Suffice to say the publisher rejected it.

0

YY!

LOL!!! A rabid rabbit?

0

@Jomo: time travel...awesome! :-) keep writing! Im sure it will be a breeze with your daughter's help ;-)

@MJP: yea, how does one get 13-14 year olds interested in history? wait..is the book about history?

@YY: wow! greedy rabbit! that's a funny topic for a children's book! can we read it? i love velveteen rabbit -- is yr rabbit the anti-thesis of that one?

Hello! Hello!
Okay I was without a drama for some time and I was googling for blog recommendations and I found a Kim Sun Ah fan blog ( Taiwanese author) she is such a fan she learned hangul to join kim sun ah's fan club. Her blog included some tutorials so I learned the basics characters. But the problem I'm having is the pronunciation. I speak english as my first language but it is somewhat accented because my country is post-colonial Britain and because I learned many words from reading and all the transliterated sounds are american english. It is so frustrating! I live in Flushing, Queens so I have a lot of hangul to read to practice and when I learned the characters I wrote all the words I knew from watching korean dramas in hangul and checked them to see if they were correct and mostly they are. There's a cabinetry shop near my house called o-ran in English spelled o-raen in hangul!!!!! I am very interested in all languages, I studied some at school and learned others because my friends speak it or because it made sense to learn at least the basics.
Anyone else learning with tips for me?

Well, I'm not learning Korean at the moment, but I teach English for a living and these are some of the tips I give my students.

Pronunciation is always a tricky one, but I would think the best way is to get some live practice in. I tell my students to try finding a penpal online (safely!) and after emailing a bit, see if they can Skype or voice chat, so they can try speaking. Or perhaps try making videos or audio clips of yourself speaking in Korean - not anything serious, like greetings or talking about dramas - and uploading them for people to comment on. Some people may be mean, but some will likely be helpful and give you pointers on words you said well or a little off. Having a little script for the video could be helpful.

Also, since you said there's a lot of hangul for you to read, that means you have access to Korean speakers, right? Do you drop in on those shops? If it's a grocery or a food shop, you can drop in and buy something and make conversation. I tell my students to try ordering pizza in English to practice; I'd say that's the same concept here. And once you get to know the people, you can ask them about words you're not sure about. :)

If you want any more tips, please let me know! :)

Informantxgirl, thanks for the great advice! I'm trying to tea0ch myself in a bit of a vacuum. I feel all scared (b/c I'm shy) before I go into the local grocers, the lone Korean establishment in the city I've found, but the ahjumma there is super sweet letting me practice. I'm hoping to be able to start communication with a cousin that is doing her ESL stint in Pusan, but I think she may be much further than me already.
I enjoy learning languages through music. Epik High or Drunken Tiger are good places to start to get vocab and phrasing. Alternatively, Outsider (아웃사이더), is brilliant, but for the advanced learner.

I also have plans to start learning korean later this year! i think one major issue would be the hangul and also pronunciation. Good that we've got kdrama so at least we can have a lot of listening exercises, haha!

Grammatically speaking I heard it's similar to japanese so I'm not too worried with that...

I don't know, maybe I got used to the japanese characters already. And I have to say that I've got the advantage of knowing most chinese characters (kanji) in japanese so basically for the written part I only need to learn around a hundred characters including hiragana and katakana.

But I do have faith that I'll be able to memorize all the hanguls since I've started reading a korean-learning book and it seems they do have a system is "setting up" the hanguls. So I guess I'm more worried for the pronunciation part.

Maybe I should get a book instead of self study? Do you have a recommendation?

0

I got Korean Made Easy written by Seung Eun Oh.

I'm only on the very first chapters learning about the different parts of hangul but the explanation is easy to follow IMO.

0

Hangul, the alphabet, is sooo easy. Way, way, way easier than other alphabets, including Japanese. It is so logical that you just can't go wrong. Seriously, I taught it to myself using an online source in a few days. I can't read quickly yet, but I can sound it out easily. The next step is understanding what I'm reading...

Go to the beginner's class and the teacher is Korean and they have audio files. She is doing her PhD in linguistics I think. The text is used by about 160 Uni.

Then go to the Indiana Uni multimedia dictionary click on the photos and you would hear the words. They have consonents and vowels lessons on the Korean dictionary on the bottom of the screen.

Good luck and practice practice.I had a quiet chuckle the other day when a guy said 'gomawo' banmal to the shopkeeper and he corrected 'gomawoyo' jondamal.

Oh yes and watching Korean dramas helps you get the correct accent out if you can imitate well :-)

I think it is because all it held was the promise of future pain, more sacrifice, less LOVE, but no emotion. No thanks.

Gisaeng are artists just whose closest parallels are with the geisha of japan. It's true that they're part of the "service and entertainment" district but just like the great courtesans of Italy, these girls are politically knowledgeable and held a great deal of power. They read and wrote poetry and danced and practiced music among other things. They were also the fashionistas and female trendsetters of their time. As sad as their lives may be, they're probably the few ladies of their time who could do and say as much as they wish with very little punishment (thanks mostly to their social skills). Even as they were lower class, they still had social standing and had the most control over their lives compared to women of other stations.

Sorry for my small rant. I could go on forever since I've been studying about geisha and gisaeng since I was twelve but I won't bore you. I have utmost reverence for these women. They lived on talent, skill, and wit. If you watch until the end of the drama, you'll see a bit of what I mean when I say that these women are very awe-inspiring and at the very least, worthy of respect.

Happy Friday everyone!

Looks like Greatest Love will be interesting!

Saw from a source about the "character personalities" for both CSW and GHJ (accuracy to be confirmed) and sounds fun!

- CSW voted as the Most Loved Actor whereas GHJ voted as Most Hated Actress (by CSW and GHJ i mean their characters in the drama)
- interestingly enough GHJ got voted as the Most Hated Actress becoz she spent a night with the hot CSW and got reported on the new (!)
- CSW has got some heart implant (ok, potential k-drama tragedy... pls dun let this ruin the drama)
- GHJ joined this real-life show and met the doctor and he seems to be the one who can get her out of the show business
- now CSW got kinda jealous and start being mischievous (i look forward to this part hehe)

Again, validity to be confirmed...

A raising top star, Dok Go Jin(Cha Seung Won) and Gu Ae Jung (Gong Hyo Jin)who is an ex-top celebrity from most popular has-been girl group "Treasure Girls" enters a fake marriage for variety show. Manager Gu Ae Hwan (Jung Jun Ha)who is not only the older brother of Gu Ae Jung but also, the manager of Treasure Girls insisted that his sister enter the show to save her career being unaware that Kang Se Ri (Yoo In Na) who also a group member of Treasure Girls is the lover of Dok Go Jin while Yoon Pil Joo, an Oriental Medicine Doctor who doesn't give a care about celebrities nor their lives is added to the love square between the three stars when he falls unexpectedly for one of the girls.

Sorry got it off the viki site.I just saw the photos from the first reading.CSW and GHJ were smiling widely while reading.Interesting.

I do have mixed feeling towards this drama (Best Love or Greatest Love, name TBC)... as JG-MR couple is still THE COUPLE for me...

but I guess this new drama would be more on the comedy side (versus CH where you have a more drama mix rather than a pure comedy) so i guess i won't / can't / shouldn't compare the two directly (otherwise I'm giving a hard time myself)

@samgetang

yeah by the doctor i mean the oriental doctor, according to the source i read he also joins the variety show where he meets GHJ.

and fellows, here's a photo treat of the actors / actresses reading the script. Enjoy!

Is nobody else watching Royal Family? Started watching because of all the hoopla on Korean news, got sucked in and watched 6 episodes over one weekend.

Pace has slowed down a bit, and the acting's a bit awkward in spots (according to Korean news, it's because at this point they're shooting and airing the drama almost live), and with the latest episodes I feel I'm watching just to see how the plotlines get resolved. It's still quite entertaining in a different way from dramas like, say, SKK Scandal.

I'm still watching it. It isn't being translated with English subs and that may be why some people aren't. I just follow along as best as I can. :-)

I sure hope that Han Ji Hoon isn't blamed for the murder... Also, there seems to be more physical chemistry between Ji Hoon and Jo Hyun Jin. That surprises me, because I thought that it was supposed to be a romance between Ji Hoon and Kim In Sook... I am so totally intrigued to find out what will happen.

I'm totally into Royal Family, even though I've only been able to watch the first four episodes with subs. I think both lead actors are killing it and their chemistry is intense. I love the older woman with secrets and a tortured past and the younger guy with a good heart who doesn't know what he's getting into -- it's a nice reversal of the usual dynamic. I'm super intrigued by the secrets of In Sook's past and how Ji Hoon will react when it inevitably all comes to light. I love all the conspiracies and manipulations, and how it's all unraveling. But the biggest strength for me is the character of In Sook; it really feels like the story of a woman's ravaged soul and if she can ever make it into the light again.

So far the only frustration is that as much as I like the whole ensemble and all the stories, I'm really into it for In Sook and Ji Hoon, and it feels like we're seeing less of the two of them together. Hope that turns around in the second half of the series...

I love Fridays because they are my official day off from everything! I have been watching Thorn Birds and really liking how the characters are developing.

The main reason I love this drama is Joo Sang Wook of course, but beyond that I love that his character was (is?) truly and sincerely in love with the evil second lead (she raises my blood pressure when she gets on the screen, but I can't stop watching her). It's quickly becoming one of my favorite melodramas. Anyone else liking Thorn Birds?

Other than that, nothing too exiting is happening this week... still chugging along with my Pil Sook challenge and I didn't even have any Chicago style pizza when I visited Chicago last weekend. Woot!

Happy Friday everyone!

JSW is perfect.

I'm not watching Thorn Birds, but I do love the way you put things, Jomo!

0

LOL robert downey jr is right on.

and i LOOOOOOVE kang woo. he is adorable and tall and his smile makes me smile! i know he's not gonna get the girl, but at this point, young jo definitely does not deserve her. i mean how the hell did he fall in love with yoo kyung?!! like what the wtf. i could not understand it and the drama did a really bad job of portraying how he suddenly fell so sincerely in love with her. and her giving up the baby after how her own mother abandoned her makes no sense! and yes i hate how kind jung eun is but han hye jin does such a good job or playing her that i just can't hate her.

and the rumors of JSW being gay. LOL i can totally see it tho.

0

KAY!!!

Noooooo! Do you really think you can see JSW being gay?
I saw the story and the denial, so I thought it was just another day in the K-Pop/Drama world.

Not that it would change my crushing on him at all...Gay or straight I will never get near him...I just hate when people have to pretend in order to be successful. It would be so painful.

0

ahh JOMO my gadar is not exceptional at all but maybe it has something to do with roles JSW plays. i still laugh when i think about how he pretty much got turned on when park shin hye's character made elephants out of towels in kimcheed radish cubes. maybe that just makes him a pervert? haha but yea it definitely sucks for entertainers to hide their sexual orientation, especially in such a conservative country like south korea.

0

Not that his sexual orientation really matters, but I really really hope he is not gay. it doesn't really matter, because in my dream world we end up together and have plenty of babies and live happily ever ever :D

I was glad she gave up the babe. Now uri Jung Eun gets to raise JSW's child. How can he possibly resisit her then?

same for me! I hate foolish kindness and villains justifying their unjustified evil deeds , ugh

I hate that evil lead, I just don't buy what she does/says she doesn't get my compassion at all not even 0.00001%

This drama is driving me crazy and I just want to stop watching it. but what can I say .. hooked :'(

I just want it to end already. For the first time I'm hoping for the second lead to win the girl in a fair way not as a compromise *sigh*

i know, right?! every bad thing the evil second lead does is not even remotely justifiable. like it's so unrealistic to me that a mother could give away her child to another woman when she had the same EXACT thing happen to her when she was a baby.
and i also like the second guy lead much more. at this point, i don't see how it's even possible that the main girl and JSW's character can end up together. he seems to be in love with the evil woman, which i also don't know how is possible when she's such a b.i.t.ch.

WHY IS JSW in love with the Evil one?
At least they could hint that they have a very good physical relationship, or show them at a romantic spot gazing into each other's eyes....

0

EXACTLY!!

I don't get how sincerely LYJ is in love with the evil girl and at the same time he is such a jerk to SJE except when he needs a company!! he so pisses me off!

and then when the evil character is caught up in her words she goes pleading for the long-lost friendship!!! and I go Chenchaa!!!YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME!!! SHE DOESN'T GET TO GET AWAY WITH ALL YOUR EVIL DEEDS!!!

aw and the second guy lead he is adorable and I like that he isn't expecting anything back , he is just to be around and makes her smile , so cute

I know! As much as I love JSW, I kind of want the second lead to get the girl, because he is just so darn cute!!!!

I have one thing that really bothers me in that drama , when the 2 stupid-evil couple broke up the evil woman was in the 5th month in her pregnancy (that didn't make sense to me , not at all!) Then we got to travel in time 6 months later which makes that women in her 11th month before she gave birth to that baby!! did I miss something here??

oh and is there a place where I can find English recap for this drama? I can't stand the characters but I'm watching just to get to the scene where LYN discovers how stupid and jerk he is and apologizes to SJE *sigh*

I think I might be the last person to watch Dream High...and when ended, I was like, "WHY DIDN'T I WATCH THIS EARLIER?" Hehehe.

[SPOILERS]
Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong. Song Sam-Dong...is awesome. :D
[SPOILERS]

It wasn't any kind of revolutionary drama or anything. In fact, the reason why I didn't jump on the bandwagon right at the start was I had the idea it was some sorta Korean Glee/Fame/Step Up kinda show. But OMG. The humor, the romance, the fun, the drama, the music...A+, and A+ for the amazing reversal that was carried off so fantastically. [SPOILER] Turning the supposed second lead into the main guy who gets the girl and the glory? Brilliant. I cried. I haven't really cried at a drama since DG Chun-hyang, but this one made me cry like eighty times, not even an exaggeration. So many good moments.

My favorite part was the fact that though it had a cheesy byline - Dream high! - it worked. It struck a chord. It laid it on just thick enough for me not to roll my eyes and say, 'Forget it'. (Which is my prediction for my future with Glee, but that's off-tangent). It always sucked me back in. So sad there aren't any more episodes!

I love Sam-Dong! :D

Dream High is totally my favorite right now. I just made my sister and her husband watch Secret Garden (because I have it on dvd) and he asked what my favorite show was. When I said Dream High he wanted to know why that one over Secret Garden. I think it's a little apples vs oranges, my expectations of each were different. DH is a simpler story w simpler single-motivated characters, but done well. I can't explain exactly WHY but from the minute Park Jin Young starts the flash mob in the finale I tear up. I suppose it's junk food for the soul, but it's exactly what I needed.

The East Coast/West Coast difference goes across all heritages - obviously weather and geography separate us.

We have East/West offices in our company and we are constantly gloating or whining about the weather. They would like some of our snow, we sure could use more sun.

Because of its size, he US could easily developed as several different countries with different languages. How different life would be if instead of all having one federal government, there was a King of California and a Prime Minister of Texas?

Someone should write that book - or was it written?

lol, that'd be an interesting alt reality. Kind of like those 80s punk/anarchy novels (see: everything Blade Runner-esque haha).

I was just thinking because a friend from Cali was visiting for her spring break; she was very surprised that people on the east coast "arent uptight" and I was really really intrigued that she would think that.
Her perspective was that West Coast Asians either have the freedom to disregard their culture or totally "fob" out while East Coast Asians try too hard to "fit-in", so much that they're more open... She said WCA are more angsty (ie Joy Luck Club asians) while ECA are more insecure.

meh. It's an interesting theory.

I'm not a big kpop fan, but I started checking out 2PM's music after watching Dream High, which inevitably lead me to Jay Park... and I'm super behind on the bandwagon, but OMG I think I'm a Jay Park fan now. Hahaha.

And I guess his only connection (so far) to kdrama is that he apparently was supposed to be cast for Sun's part in Secret Garden (and Jang Hyuk was supposed to get the lead as you know), but complications ensued, so those roles went to other people...

I understand about 15% of the song ( lol) but I saw the video on mnet so I have a good understanding of what it's about. The first time I wanted a song from a k-drama was when I watched I love you don't cry the closing credits song ( Saranghae, Saranghae . . .) then the intermezzo ( so to speak) song in loving you a thousand times but the one I pursued was the soundtrack for the woman who still wants to marry. The song Haru, Haru spoke to me and the song Thoughts I couldn't get out of my mind. That drama's soundtrack is the best I've downloaded so far. The city hall ost is okay maybe because it's been a while since I last saw city hall.

Good Morning, Everyone!!!

I have been waiting to ask this question since reading some of the articles this week. This question comes because of the differences I noticed in the "Comments" made for the articles between Kim Bum, who many comments treated as a cute child or younger brother, versus Jung Il Woo, who many comments treated as an adult male. They are only two years apart in age so:

Question
----------

When do you consider an actor, to be old enough to be man-candy? It it age, or appearance?

(ie. Kim Bum-21, Jung Il Woo-23, Choi Si Won-23, Lee Min Ho-23, Jang Geun Suk-23, Or whomever)

For me it depends on the appearance. I mean, Kim Soo Hyun and Ok Taecyeon are almost of the same age but I consider Taecyeon as the "manly" man while Soo Hyun has a high schooler appeal to me (sorry for rambling but I hope I got my point across XD)

I think appearance has a LOT to do with it.

When high kick came out, everyone treated Kim Hye Sung ('88) like a the annoying little bro while Jung Il Woo ('87) was the mature noona killer. It points to their characters on the show as well but they're only a year apart in age.

Lee Seung Gi is STILL treated like a noona killer LOL.

And Kim Tae Woo (g.o.d.)... I dont think he's been a kid since he hit puberty haha.

That tends to mark them as younger.

That is what Kim Soo Hyun is successfully navigating through now.

I never thought as kim so hyun as that young. In fact I thought he could play the lead in Will it Snow for Christmas quite well. But I don't think of him as a Man yet not because he doesn't have the beard, he just looks too youthful and I'm only 4 years older.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Definitely appearance takes precedence, but to a point. If an actor is under 20 I still consider him to be a boy, despite the fact that he may look much older (although most guys under 20 don't look that old, so the point might be moot).

As for men who are of approximately the same age, but a bit older (in their 20s and 30s), it depends entirely on their looks. Some people just have baby faces. If the features are longer, more squared, and a bit sharper, they look more like a man. If the features are softer and rounder, more boyish. They are both attractive in their separate ways and I don't have a preference, personally. So actors like Kim Bum, who have soft faces, look boyish vs. Choi Si Won, who is much more square, look manish.

The facial hair doesn't seem to make a difference to me, because it always looks so sparse and boyish to me -- I say this because I am used to my husband, who is extremely Italian and has a full-on Homer Simpson five o'clock shadow by noontime. This isn't a dig on either party, just an explanation as to why, say, Kim Bum growing a 'stache isn't going to make a difference for me.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

LOL that's so funny. I can see how Kim Bum with a moustache would look like a kid playing dress up. I was thinking of what's up fox? when I answered this question chun jung myung appears on the scene with a beard and he looks like the manliest man but when he shaved it he looked like a kid and the first time I saw Cha Seung Won in Bodyguard versus him in City Hall. But I have to say Seung Won Oppa can't hide his manliness by shaving his beard.

I am wounded MJP, I really am! You are going to believe wikipedia over me when it comes to this man? *sniffles* That's when he got registered. He was actually born on April 7th 1986. We share a birthday month! Yay! :)

0

Viola,

Dear... I hate to say this but Dramawiki got it from the Super Junior website. I went and checked it for myself under Profile...

http://superjunior.smtown.com/

also Han Cinema has the same date

http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Choi_Si-won.php

0

Nope, our dear Viola got it right, It's been a couple of years since the registered vs. real b-day thing got explained and he's an 86'er... which would explain why the maknae in SJ calls him hyung but won't call ryeowook hyung when ryeowook is an 87'er.

0

Okay... I think this is confusing. So why don't they put the actual day of birth on the information? Never mind. I'm just gonna go with it.

http://sujupinas07.multiply.com/calendar/item/10007/Siwons_Real_Birthday

He celebrated his birthday in February in 2010.

Must remember: Never question Viola... Never question Viola... Never Question Viola

I think a lot has to do with appearance and the aura they give off play. I have friends dating younger guys and sometimes the guys seem older because of their personalities. While in real life, we don't get a close glimpse of their personalities, I base that on the roles they play - whether they played a lot of younger-version-of-the-main-actor roles and whether their characters were older than the female characters they play opposite against.

I'm still considering Kim Bum as really young because I've known him from his child-version-of-the-main-actor roles and his most recent role was that of a younger man opposite an older woman.

I haven't seen Jung Il Woo in many things but he has played older people in roles so I consider him a man.

JGS is on the fence because though he has held lead adult roles, I feel like his characters are typically younger - feels fresh out of college. MSOAN and YB seemed really geared for the younger audience - like a manhwa novel abt high schoolers.

Kim Soo Hyun - still not "manly" to me because he has played all these younger roles and when he finally got to be the lead, he still played a high schooler in a youth drama.

I shall slowly wait in hope! lol

We live in an one story 1,500 sq. Eichler that is an open concept house. Our kitchen, dining, living and family room all flow into one another. My husband parks himself on the family room couch, surrounded by his computer, monitors and camera paraphernalia and wires connecting everything!! He is always doing a conference call with the speaker phone on, so I can't make a peep! :( So 24/7 I'm tippy toeing around and so are the kids. So, no more KPOP playing in the background while I do the housework. :( If that wasn't bad enough, next month I will have my In-Laws over for 4 months. I wont be able to watch a darn thing, because I will be too busy cooking and cleaning. I will also be tortured, because my husband is getting Pakistani programming on the Dish for them to watch. So, not only will I not be able to watch my favorite K Dramas, but I will be forced to watch Pakistan News and Dramas 24/7!!!!! SOB!!!!! No more Dramas and no more Mangas for 5 months. It's going to kill me!!!! Let me tell you, the withdrawal symptoms are not going to be pretty. Ottoke!!!!!!

Erm, hello everyone, I am new!

Not only to this website, but to kdramaland in general. I can't recall how on earth I found it, but about a month ago I started watching Boys Over Flowers. Despite the really awful use of "ALMOST PARADISE" (it's awkward up during fight scenes and heroic triumphs had me rolling in laughter), and other humongous, glaring flaws, I found myself hooked and watched the whole thing, secretly loving it and balking at its utter ridiculousness at the same time.

I've since watched 9 End 2 Outs (cute and more realistic), Coffee Prince (loved the social issues explored), Personal Taste (loved the two main characters, ending got a little wacky), My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (adorable!), and I'm halfway through Secret Garden now.

This blog has been a great help in parsing out some of the social commentary and pop culture references that, as someone of non-Korean descent and little background in Korean culture, I can get lost. It really helps to have a place to go for some intelligent discussion on what's happening culturally, plot-wise, cinematically, among other analytical angles.

Anyway, thanks for the community and consider me a new fan!

I'm hoping that Hyunwoo becomes more well known because of Music Bank and gets a drama role that emphasizes something other than his pretty babyface, that Lee Jangwoo becomes a hit on WGM and that Minwoo continues to grow as an artist and an actor.

Ah, but it is a totally trivial thing. If you don't mind though then read on :D

SO earlier I was skimming through the posts at omonatheydidnt, being a newly converted T-ara fan. Then as I was about to close the tab one headline jumped out at me. The title was "Eunjung to take hiatus from T-ara..."

For a few seconds I went "NOOOOOOOOOOOO :( :( :(" I was so ready to throw things at my computer (kidding. or maybe not :P) because I was just beginning to really feel this girl group, and Eunjung is my favorite out of them so it would really suck if she took a leave now. So I clicked the link only to find out it was the most stupid April Fools' joke that I ever encountered, as the news was fake. :(

There are a lot of posts/site changes for April Fools'. In a 2PM fansite last year, they went all out with the most credible looking (complete with screencaps from korean sites) fake news stories. The parents still haven't decided on a name yet. A funny thing is, they prepared a list of 19 names, however, none of those names seem to fit the newborn according to her mom. And, both mother and child are scheduled for discharge today. Uh-oh.... Will there be a blank title on the temporary birth certificate? Wait and see.

Now, her parents are desperate enough to try and trick me to say names I've picked for my daughter-to-be. So wrong!?! Keke~ Silence is golden. Pahaha~

Hiya! I've been watching this website for over a year now and just love all the recaps to my favorite and not-so favorite dramas. As well as catching up with the stars. It's my entertainment channel since I barely watch anything else.

Love reading all these replies to the Open Topic. You guys never cease making me laugh! :) The list of altered dramas are belly-aching HILARIOUS!

"Roachsecutioner Princess, My Gruel, Yeast of Eden."
What an apt description!

Yikes... Talking about grueling. I can't believe I got through East of Eden, impressed. Then I thought about the botched ending and the 30 episodes of me suffering to hold back tears and not look like a lightweight next to my dongsaeng who was watching Swallow the Sun at the same time.

Speaking of which. Is Swallow the Sun a drama I should give a try? I'm still hesitating...

I was really skeptical about watching City Hall because when my dongsaeng was watching it, I glanced over her shoulder, saw crying and rolled my eyes... Not fond of crying dramas at all. Even if powerhouse Kim Sun Ah is the main girl. (Loved her in MNIKSS and watched it 2x). Then I dilly-dallyed for a while before I decided to give it a try. BEST DECISION EVER MADE. Love the chemistry between her and Cha Seung Won. So believable. I wish they were together in real life. I mean, why not???

I'm on board with 49 Days and as much as Jung Il Woo is a great character, I am really unabashedly interested in Han Kang's character. Yeesh, when I watched Three Dads and a Mom, I couldn't get past the second episode after the husband died... But maybe that was because of Eugene. For some reason, I'm not convinced about her acting skills. :-/ But wow, two years away from drama land and serving his country, and Jo Hyun Jae is KILLING the Mr. Darcy role in 49 Days. I almost want to hug him and ruffle that mane of his... So sourly adorable.

But while waiting for Thursdays and Fridays to get my K-drama fix (torture!)... do you have any suggestions of good dramas (old or new) to watch?

Annyeong, I am also quite new here but lurking around for more than half a year now. I love it here just like you described. Love everyone's passion for Kdramas. The people here are warm and hilarious too! Try Coffee Prince. I think you will enjoy it. Its one of my favourites. I'm a newly converted City Haller, just one week old thanks to all the lovelies here who recommended I watch it last friday. I think CSW is really talented, versatile actor and oh-so-hot! Its sweet to know he is married and married very young to a woman 4 years his senior and has 2 beautiful children. I didnt know that after watching City Hall. KSA & CSW had so much chemistry, acting was just superb on every level, from comedy, to angst .. one really couldnt tell they werent a couple. I really cant wait to see CSW in the upcoming Drama 'Best Love' written by the same people who wrote 'Gumiho'.

Yep, I've watched Coffee Prince. Gong Yoo kept it going for me. Not really a fan of Yoon Eun Hye, although she did her part well too. :) It was one of the first I watched actually. Grew my love for K-dramas... :P And maybe coffee treats occasionally.

Aww, I should've researched about CSW before speaking out of turn. Don't want to be associated as a suggestive homewrecker. That's really great to hear that he's a family man. Makes my respect for him go up a notch. Thanks for the info.

Definitely keeping my eyes open for Best Love then. Didn't really jump on the bandwagon for Athena but maybe one day, I will...?

ah you're right. All her pairing seem to be the right guy. I know that auditioning and the writing makes that determination as well, but the actors themselves have to be qualified too. One thing about the few episodes of night after night that I saw that bothered me was that she didn't seem right for the role. I think when it comes to physical comedy Lee soo Kyung does it better. It was good to see her in my country calls/secret agent miss oh after the melodrama and that could've been a kim sun ah role too, but she would've been underused. I think the actress in paradise ranch is wrong for the part. I saw her I think in One fine day ( I didn't watch the whole drama the incest times three story line was too confusing) and she was better in that role.

I can't remember the last time I had a crush but my crush on Domingo Chen was pretty strong.
The point is, cha seung won's son might be super attractive like his dad and he is closer to my age and would be a more appropriate age. Although, if I ever date again it will be someone in their 30's or 40's.

of course I saw sam soon!!! I started city hall before I saw samsoon and I actually couldn't get further than the first 5 minutes without falling asleep. ( It was after lunch and I'm usually tired in the afternoon). So I didn't watch it. Anyway I was renting out my room on this site and a young man contacted me and we got to talking about ourselves and it just came up that I was a k-drama addict and we exchanged lists and he told me I had to see kim sam soon and city hall. And I told him how city hall put me to sleep. Anyway I decided to give sam soon a try and after watching Kim Sun Ah I had to see her again and I watched the first episode of city hall in the morning before lunch and I cracked up soo much. It even had my brother Andrew laughing ( He is this strange boy who is obsessed with true language I can't explain it except you have to be a literary person to understand our obsession with language)
Anyway I'll give night after night another chance. My sister is just watching k-dramas so there's one where I won't know the ending and "ruin it for her" I don't mind people telling the ending by the way.

My theory is that Kim Sun Ah makes her male co-stars look very good! Like, more attractive. Lee Dong Gun wasn't that big a deal in Sweet 18 but when I watched When It's At Night, I was so impressed by him.

Same with Hyun Bin, Gong Yoo...

Not that Gong Yoo needs a woman to make him look amazing on screen but he was SO adorable even more in She's On Duty!

I miss her too. Hope she acts something good soon enough.

hey OTers! TGIF! \O/

yesterday i watched im soo jeong and gong yoo's movie, finding kim jong wook. it was unexceptional, but boy o boy did i delight in seeing im soo jeong and gong yoo. they're both so dear to me.

i don't watch many kmovies, since i've found most of them uninspiring (although ahjusshi, o ahjusshi. jfc wonbin, /please/ do a drama), but for beloved actors, anything.

and bonus oh man seok!! that sure made me sit up. i love oh man seok. forever love for vineyard man. it isn't even really a very good drama, but the last third is joyful and oh man seok. <3 GAHH. has a prettttttty song on its OST, too. makes me feel at peace. :)

I saw the korean movie My wife got married and arahan. I cracked up so much watching arahan. I never saw the whole of my wife got married. I was flipping through the channels and I saw from the scene where he goes to the house where she lives with her new husband and beats him up and she follows him home. That scene stole me from whatever I was watching before (harry's law not that good anyway) Anyway it's a movie you watch don't get hung up on the rationale. Just watch it.

Hi OT'rs

Glad to read from all of you.

I have been visiting here frequently but not writing for a while. So this is a - What I'm Watching Now.

Of late with the dearth of the k-dramas that I like to watch I have done a little switching. I am admittedly a proud Asian drama addict, however more so k-drama than the others. So with the dry spell I tried watching some wuxia (which I haven't done in a good while), to my pleasant surprise the two that I have watching and continue to do so I am enjoying.

Jade Palace Lock Heart which has some BOF parodies in it and Clothing the World (melodrama but not too much to turn you off). Recommend you watch them more so Jade Palace Lock Heart, you'll like it. Anyone watching Jade Palace, what do you think?

I have also tried watching the k-drama soap 'I believe in men" mainly because one of my favorite agasshis is in it (Sang Mo from Giant), I am liking what I have been able to see so far which is not much, they are looking for Ko-Eng subbers (hint, hint) there at viki. Those who can "help them please".

As for 49 days, I have decided to read the recaps courtesy of javabeans and girlfriday (thank you ladies) than watch it because sometimes its more enjoyable to read the recaps from actual watching. I realize that at times one gets bombarded with spoilers, recaps, other information etc. that you do not get to really enjoy the show in its truest form. This has happened before, so I tried just sticking to recaps - it works. I wonder if you have experienced the same thing?

So the only k-drama I'm watching is Crime Squad which I like, but then again it has my favorite agasshi - Song II Kook. He does good work and knows how to bring out the emotions.

Gone for now, have a happy Friday everyone.

Hello! I'm enjoying CS too. I really felt the sadness in the recent episode, especially the scene in the hospital. Also, I'm eager to see the ex-wife's reaction to the fact that her sunbae is the cop that shot that car, which eventually killed HI. Also, I think I've mentioned this before but I really love the OST song sung by Insooni. :)

So I was thinking... and this may have been said before, but I'm new to the world of Kdramas... but I think there should be a version of tvtropes.org for Kdramas, or maybe even Asian dramas in general. We could include entries like The Wrist Grab, The Oppa Pout-Wiggle, The Back Hug, etc. The writers on this blog kind of refer to these things as their own entities anyway, and I just think it would be really fun to catalog them and write snarky explanations, and then list examples from the various dramas. Or maybe someone should just start adding Asian dramas to the existing TV Tropes site, but then we couldn't name the tropes specifically for K-dramas. The site is so addicting, but I've only seen a few mentions of Kdramas on there, and usually not in any detail (unless I'm just missing it??).

Just thought I'd throw it out there, because I think it would be fun but I'm way too lazy and nowhere near knowledgeable enough to start it myself. If there is anything like this already and I just don't know about it, someone toss me a link!

:-)

I rmb someone mentioning right here on OT (not too sure how far back though) about how it would be interesting to have a site or something around the lines of "If my life were a Kdrama...", where we'd share things like:

"I mistook my new boss for the janitor today. If my life were a Kdrama, in 3 months, I'll be married to my über handsome, choco-abby, chaebol of a husband/boss."

That would be fun too! :)

It's funny that you're bringing this up today cuz just yesterday, I discovered the tvtropes.org site and I was also looking for a k-drama section on it. I did find this index: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph/Main/KoreanDrama
and if you click on an individual k-drama, it lists a bunch of tropes used in that drama. However, the tropes listed are universally-found tropes, and many of the uniquely Korean or Asian tropes are missing from the list.

Several months ago (like last Nov. or Dec.?), someone posted a link on the OT to a youtube video of the most common K-drama (or possibly Asian drama) tropes. I didn't have time to watch it at the time, and when I went to look for it later, I couldn't find it. Perhaps someone else here knows about that video?

Happy Friday, All!

I'm home from a job interview (which I think I bombed, but that's another story). The weather is sucktastic, but I'm inside now, eating a very late lunch, and trying to figure out what to watch while waiting for a new episode of Twinkle Twinkle/Sparkling/All That Glitters. (And hoping our oppa will give us another mini-recap. Maybe? Hopefully? Pleeeeeeease. *wigglepoutwhine*) I haven't started "Once Upon a Time in Saengchori " which was suggested to me last week, but I'm also tempted by the "Kiss Me, Kill Me" movie...but I know the drama-love will be short-lived. Maybe that's why we're all addicted.

Also, I'm about 18 pages away from finishing my first novel...while quietly working on a TWWSWTM fanfic. Shh! I'm scared of it's high potential for Mary-Sue-ness. Anywho, have a great weekend everyone!

I know this is a drama thread but I'm just a bit curious. To anime fans, have any of you seen Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica? If you have, what do you think of it?

If you haven't.... and if you like either Sailor Moon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and/or Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, MSMM is a really nice anime to watch. It's a bit grown up and it's currently still airing, but ep 10 is a good enough place to take a pause.

MSMM made my head spin. If you do watch it, hope you like it. It's very philosophical though.

Happy Friday everyone!^^

Hi brave knight! Nope....haven't watched your anime. I'm a sucker for romance animes and have watched Vampire Knight I and II, Maid Sama, Kimi Ni Todoke, Itazura Na Kiss and Skip Beat. Vampire Knight and Skip Beat are unconcluded....sigh. Haven't got around to Honey and Clover cos I hear it's frustrating? I love Buffy though and have watched every single ep! Btw Yoda sends greetings. In his exact words: APRIL I LIKE. FOOL I AM NOT. WISE I AM.

*49'days*

I will agree that: In order for a work of fiction to be successful, specially one that deals in the realm of “Fantasy,” the writer must set a number of rules (parameters), that will define the “how, when, and where.” of the fantasy elements that the characters will be interacting upon.

I do like story lines that deal with “death and the after life,” I, like the rest of the world, have concern myself at one point or another with my own mortality, due to illnesses or accidents, or the passing of family love ones, or friends.

The drama 49'days, takes the bulk of its “Spiritual” background from the philosophical thought that comes from “Buddhism,” the other rules associated with the drama, e.g. “Collecting tears of love ones,” being hired as a “Grim Reaper”, inhabiting some other persons body, etc, etc, this latter concepts come to us from other religions, or philosophical backgrounds.

I can take this drama and drill it against the “dogmatic,” concepts of establish “Religion and Philosophy,” and point out the discrepancies, an lack of logical cohesiveness, but I wont do that.

I think what I like the most about 49' days it is its “simplicity.” This drama deal with the reality of our life's, I have been ill enough that not only I, but the doctors thought that I was in mortal danger, I was in a car accident, I hit a cyclist, and for the first 3 minutes after it appear that the guy was dead, friends and love ones around me have died, so what have I learn out of this experiences?

1- I must always seek to be at “Peace with God,” (what ever concept I may have of Him/Her.
2- I must always seek to be at “Peace with all man,” (I must be willing to always forgive, even the “ex-wife,”)
3- I must show my love in words and in action, (most people need to be told that they are loved, do not assume that they already know that)
4- My actions need to speak louder than my words, ( I can fool people some times, but not all the time).
5- There are people who will “hate my guts” no matter what, so I do not need to take it personal.
6- I am not the “Coolest” guy in the world.
7- I may not have a second chance, saying “I am sorry is not a sign of weakness.”
8- If I do not love myself just the way that I am, it will always be hard to love others.

Peace to Yall!!!

P.S. Do not forget to say “I love you” or “ I am Sorry,” you may not have another chance!!! : O }

I'm enjoying the innocence of this T-drama 'Love Bufffet'. So far there are no permanently annoying villains; just pure-hearted young adults stumbling their way thru life and love. What a departure from the senseless conflicts we sometimes find in some dramas. Their conflicts are more with the inner seleves, which is how it is in real life.

Try it; in my case it brought back memories of young love.

I love that show. It's the best drama I've seen in years. So real, poignant and sweet. Maybe if the Koreans do a remake, it'd be even better? As it is, the taiwanese version is amazing cos it's so fresh and different. It's head and shoulders above all the dramas I've watched so far.

Omg exactly my feelings. Loved everything except the crappy ending. But I still think it's obvious who she chose, and the ending was just to please you-know-who's fans. Was the manga ending like this as well? Don't want to mention names and spoilt the show for Sam.

0

@YY... I read somewhere that it's exactly the manga ending so they were true to the manga.

That was my first drama that starred Aaron & Calvin. Both guys depicted their role quite well.

Hey, I just came back from a trip to Seoul, and I happened to stay at a hotel where they were filming a scene from Smile, Donghae in the lobby! I don't watch dailies, but I might have to check out the episode I saw being filmed (it was just a few seconds, but still!)

Does anyone know what date the scene might air if it was filmed on March 30? Or, alternately, anyone who watches the show see a part recently where an older man, a young woman, and a bunch of assistants leave a hotel and go into revolving doors while the employees and bow? There was what looked to be a young man, possibly a primary character, looking on and maybe bowing too. I know it's a vague description, and this kind of scene probably happens like 10 times in any drama, but it's about all I have to go on since there was no dialogue.

I'll be very grateful (and impressed!) if anyone can help me out!

I'm so smitten with Jung Il-woo after watching him play the Scheduler in 49 days. So, I'm watching Return of Iljimae and it's fantastic! I love him as Ilijimae. How can a guy have such elegant features and still be so masculine?

There are good current dramas (e.g., 49 days) but they just don't have that "crack" factor. I'm hooked but not in that crazy obsessive way. I miss it!
