More, more, more from Lie To Me

We’ve got a bunch of new stuff from SBS’s upcoming Lie To Me, including a teaser video that gives us our first glimpse at how Yoon Eun-hye and Kang Ji-hwan end up fake-married. Hint: It’s all her fault. (In the preview, she’s the one calling after him, “Yobo!” — the endearment reserved for spouses — while he mutters under his breath about the trouble she’s caused. Hee.)

Yoon plays Ah-jung, a lower-level civil servant with an everywoman kind of appeal — you know, the bumbling, lovable heroine so frequently seen in K-dramas, which Yoon does particularly well. (The blue-tracksuited stills all come from flashbacks into her days when she was studying to take the civil servant exam.)

On the other hand we’ve got Ki-joon (Kang Ji-hwan), a hotel CEO from a chaebol family who is decidedly NOT pleased about getting caught up in Ah-jung’s lie linking them together. The way he tosses her unceremoniously on the bed reminds me of the grumpy character he played in Coffee House, and I suspect Ki-joon will have that same contrast between his exterior chic hottie and his true inner crankypants.

Pictured below Kang in the following stills is new actor Sung Joon, who plays Ki-joon’s friendly, positive, honest younger brother Sang-hee. I’m guessing big bro missed out on all the nice genes, which went to easygoing friend-magnet Sang-hee instead. At least that’s what all the drama promises; it’s hard to pick out his supposed free-spirited good cheer in the photos below, where he’s looking more like the spoiled brat we’d expect of a rich younger-brother chaebol heir.

Then there’s the cameo from Danny Ahn (Runaway Plan B), pictured at bottom. Since he’s playing Ki-joon’s good friend, I suppose that makes him another Richie Rich type, but I find it cute that he looks more like an absentminded professor.

The drama premieres on May 9. My advice: Fill up on your sleep now! You might find yourself falling way short once the new lineup bursts onto the scene and overtakes our lives.

The Ramen Hair was a stipulation in the International Hotness Distribution Act which protects the equality of hotness among actors and actresses from different countries. In section 4.12 of the International Hotness Distribution Act:

"A nation which unfairly claims its share of admirers across the teenage and noona population must find a way to reduce the appeal of its performers, either by producing really sucky dramas with androgynous leads (see Section 1.1.2: The Making of MSOAN), the positioning of excess facial hair (see Section 1.1.3: The De-hot-izing of Cha Seung Won), or other undesirable styling which renders the actors/actresses on the same level as Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt."

I draw your attention to Section 1.1.4:

The lack of ramien (and any other type of) hair in aging stars -

Unfortunately among the aging stars, there exists a minority who suffer from a lack of hair on their heads, which may affect their confidence, hotness and star appeal among their viewers.

To ractify the problem, said stars are encouraged to try out ramien hair transplants.

The procedure is simple, cheap and painless.
CAUTION: KIDS DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.
Purchase a cup (or two if balding problem is dire) of ramien, apply a generous dash of UHU glue on pate, break off ramien into separate strands and stick onto pate immediately. In seconds, our senior stars will see the difference.... curly ramien locks, in a natural bright yellow hue.

Here's a revamped song for us:

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Reaper Ramen Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you; can't you see it in my eyes?
I've been one poor drama addict, and I've been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care?
Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it...

Correct grooming and maintenance of Ramen Hair Transplants now revealed!

1. Use of fruit- or vegetable-based shampoo and conditioner most preferred to encourage growth
2. For added bounce and shine, smooth with some olive oil...extra virgin is best
3. For darker highlights, spray some soy sauce
4. Don't forget the chili flakes and pepper bits for some texture and zing

SAMGETANG IS BACK!!!!!

We sooooooooooooooooooo missed you!!!!!!

0

sorry, guys! missed all of you, too. my youngest brother passed away three weeks ago. our family mourned his loss. will share more about this most "inspiring" and "insightful" event that our family has experienced in the coming OT :-)

for now, all i can say is death is good and reminds us of how short life is and how precious are the times we are given to share with our family and loved ones.

and you, guys, are like family to me, too. cant resist this ramen-hair craze going on here. you all made me laugh hard, thanks thanks thanks :-)

great to be back ;-)

0

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Hugs. <3

0

Thank you very much, Laica. *hugs back*

0

Oh poor baby!
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I am glad we can bring some light. As stupid as we are, we do try.

I really am interested in your story, and am looking forward to hearing it on OT.

Lots of hugs and love, Samgetang!

0

samgetang, I'm so sorry. My brother died this winter and loss is truly a mixed bag.

0

@Samgetang

Welcome back!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I just told Jomo basically the same thing a few days ago when she asked how do we feel about 50.

Yes, death is a sure thing that'll come without warning. So, I just want to live my life and fill it with things that I won't regret when I reach 50 (If I'm blessed to reach it).

Thinking about how death could come at any moment always reminds me to be more patient, more loving and more accepting about people close to me.

And, yes again, death is in a way a very good thing. It serves as a very good reminder.

0

Oh Sam, so happy you're back! We missed you. So so sorry about your loss...*BIG BIG HUG* Feel that? With you in your pain. My mum died years ago and I still miss her every day. Life is transcient, but love and memories last for eternity.

0

Samgetang,

My condolences to you and your family at the loss of your youngest brother.

It's good to read hope and optimism in your comment. Living our lives with the loss of those we love can be a very difficult time.

You have my humble prayer support.

0

Hm....can we substitute all 4 with organic homemade compost?
It's certainly fruit and veg based.
Duno about the bounce but it'd certainly add shine.
It'd certainly darken he he
It'd certainly add texture LOL

Imagine the smell as ramen haired grandpa struts slow-mo in the wind. All the girls would swoon. No kidding.

0

@jomo: sensin' the quiet love, thanks much...

@YY: feelin' the big, big hug, appreciate a lot...

@mandelbrotr: acceptin' the empathy, gratefully so ...

@pipit: sharin' the wisdom learned, humbly now...

@mjp: acceptin' the prayers, joyfully i bow...

This is the best teaser I've see out of 3 May dramas so far. I'm still waiting for 3 others.

Something that's interesting about this drama is the female character. Unlike the traditional Chaebol romance stories, she is a level 5 government employee. So it's not a rich guy, poor girl or rich girl, poor guy story. The guy is mega rich but the girl has no worries whatsoever with her prestigious career.

I don't think I've ever seen Chaebol drama before that had a female character so well off interacting with a mega rich guy. It would seem that more people would empathize with her if she was level 9 or level 8 employee. Being a level 5, she's already in top class in Korea and how will see two high class characters interacting. Most interestingly, I'm curious to find out why they insisted on making her an upper class character. It will be interesting.

0
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

Is level 5 considered upper class? Interesting, I had no idea. I thought she was on par with a Shin Mirae.

But the stills of her from that event-gone-wrong show that maybe she's a bit of a klutz at work, so that's her flaw?

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

Hi Laica. Levels 5 is considered a high position. Levels are as follows.

Level 1: Central Directors of government agencies, senior (vice head) level or head judges, senior managing level prosecutors, metropolitan area mayors, regional governors, Heads of committees, Central Head of police, Central Head of Police in Seoul, Central Head of Police Academy, Military officer with stars (generals), and etc.

Level 2: Managing directors of agencies, upper level ranking judges, ranking prosecutors, smaller city mayors, senior managing level for fire department, and etc.

Level 3: (Non general) military officers, directors of police force, fire departments, managing director of minor committees, Public prosecutor, and etc.

Level 4: Principals of elementary school, Chief of Police (brancy), lower level judges, Chief of Fire department (branch), and etc.

Level 5: senior level police officer (vice chief), lower level military officer, regional school principals, officer for government position, manager level at revenue services and etc.

Level 6: Vice principals at school, low level senior professional military officers (non military academy grads), regional vice principal or managers.

Level 9: police, military soldiers, fire department employees, and etc.
____

For levels 9 to 8, you need 2~7 years to be promoted.
For levels 8 to 7, you need 3~7 years to be promoted.
For levels 7 to 6, you need 4~11 years to be promoted.
For levels 6 to 5, you need 5 years of experience and testing process.

So for her age, she took an express lane to become level 5. It means she's extremely intelligent, and passed a very difficult test. She has a solid salary and great benefits deal.

Hope it helps.

I dunno...I want to be excited by this series, because I love YEH, but I'm really sick of the bumbling good-hearted girl getting involved with the rich, socially superior jerk. He treats her like dirt and somehow she's drawn to that over the nice hot guy option usually standing right next to her...blah blah blah. It'd be nice to start a romance without such inequity in terms of power, social status and common sense between the two leads -- I mean come on! YEH is a goddess! It would be nice if her character was at least a functioning adult.

I know, I know, that's not how the Cinderella trope works...but still. Capable women rock!

To totally mash two famous quotes:
All the stories have been told, but the fun is in the details.

P&P has been done endless times - none straying too much from the original set up, and I have read, watched and loved them mostly.

My heart still skips a beat with the lingering stares, the jealous outbursts, the first "almost" kiss, and then, the first time he turns around for one last glimpse.

My heart still aches when the hero can't express his true feelings, or can't decide to let go of his first love.

My heart still soars when the hero makes the u-turn, goes back to his true love, walks determinedly towards her, and finally, declares himself with a passionate, moving kiss...

This sh^t never gets old when it's done well.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you on those tropes -- the basics of romance. Those are why I love k-dramas! The part I'm tired of seeing is the girl be a total flake/mess and the guy having all the power, money, respect and career success, even though he's usually also a jerk on top of it.

Part of what made P&P work was that both Elizabeth and Darcy brought substance to the table from the beginning -- Elizabeth always had her wits, her charm, her intelligence and her humor; her life wasn't a total mess until she ran into Darcy. They felt like a relationship of equals right from the start, even if Darcy was higher on the social scale. It would be nice if more k-dramas started out with our hero and heroine being equals in terms of respect and capability, even if they have other flaws to overcome.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ahh!
Got ya! I missed the boat on your viewpoint.
Matching strengths to strengths is what P&P did well.

As far as the flaky or Candy character, I think that old thing must come in handy so the audience can 1. identify with her, then 2. see her development from mess to strength.

You know, the "we knew you had it in you, girl, under all that curly/frizzy hair?"

Kind of off topic, but did you ever see the BBC's re-do of The Taming of the Shrew with Shirley Henderson and Rufus Sewell? That matched the characters very nicely and let them battle it out the entire film. Loved it.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree that the whole thing is to get the audience on the side of the character, but for me the kdramas tend too push it too far in both directions -- the girls are such a mess, and the guys are such icy perfection, at least externally. The inequality really bothers me -- yeah yeah, she eventually melts his heart and bandages up his childhood wounds, but can't she at least be a reasonably together adult herself to begin with?

I did see that Taming of the Shrew! So much fun. I really liked that series of updates of Shakespeare for TV.

0

Interesting... I didn't know you had this serious attachment to P&P.

Have you read Persuasion by Jane Austen? It's better because both characters start out as equals in society (the girl is from a once-rich family about to go down while the guy is from a poor family but is going up in rank due to the navy).

The guy has issues because the girl rejected him 8 years ago (back when they were 10 rungs apart in the social ladder) and now he's back to find a wife, "Here I am. Ready to be wed like a proper gentleman. Any woman can have me for the taking... (Anyone but Anne ____)"

I know, I know, it's boring without the shower and ramen jokes. But it's the best Austen novel for me (and I've read all of them! Heehee... this was before I became addicted to kdramas, when I had too much time.)

I totally agree with Jomo on all her statements above. *swoons*

Also, I think in this case, even though he's the cold chaebol and she seems a bit flaky, from the trailers (especially the second one posted by bubbles, above) it seems like SHE's the one who's playing him and turning his life upside down, and going crazy, chasing her around and trying to undo the chaos she's thrown him into. Which means she's the initiator, and the one in control. I can't wait :D

Still, I'm with you on the need for smart, capable heroines. It's one of my favourite things about City Hall - the leads might have different strengths and kinds of intelligence, but they're an equal match and the heroine is just as awesome and kickass as the hero.

I hope you're right -- I certainly wouldn't mind seeing YEH deliberately throwing KJMH into a tailspin! That would be pretty fun.

It's funny that you mention City Hall, because as much as I loved that series, I think it was one of the worst ones I've seen in terms of starting the two leads off at such inequitable ends -- he had EVERYTHING in terms of looks, respect, power and money, and she had nothing and was so put down by practically everyone. At times it was downright painful to watch the way the simply gorgeous Shin Mi Rae was talked about as the ugliest duckling around, particularly early on when Jo Guk himself was laughing at her. For a long time I could not figure out why Mi Rae would fall for someone who had treated her the way Jo Guk had, no matter how good looking he was. Thinking back, I only truly fell for the series in the second half when they really became much more equal in terms of power, status and respect.

But as pointed out above, if in this series YEH is a level 5 civil servant, maybe she's not doing so badly career-wise at least. That would be pretty cool if so.

Hmm, I think we were talking about slightly different things.

I see your point about their inequality in outward status, but that's actually part of what I was talking about: he had the looks, status, respect, money, etc. but he was kind of morally bankrupt and actually really lonely. His only close relationship was with his adopted son. Whereas Mirae, even though she was stuck in a dead-end job and then fired, the laughingstock of the town, unfashionable and "old maid", she was sure of herself and her opinions, unwilling to give way on her principles, had a strong circle of friends and family, and knew how to give and do for others.

In a way it's like they showed each other the strengths each lacked, and learned from each other, both to become stronger and more complete people (as well as an unbeatable team). He taught her how to be a successful politician, and she showed him the value of standing for something, and of human relationships. The one scene that really stands out in my mind is when he asks her if she'll always be on his side no matter what, and she says no. That if he's doing something unjust, she'll fight him, for his own sake. He was stunned by her answer. I really loved that moment.

For me, it was too much inequality at the start. And although Mi Rae had all these great inner qualities, she was also stuck with a lot of insecurities due to her failed relationships with men -- so on top of all the outward lack of success, there was also a real insecurity to Mi Rae that was a little heartbreaking, because no one valued what she had to offer. She projected herself as a strong person and did grow so much in actual strength as the story progressed, but I always thought that it was a bit disturbing that she fell for JG when he was still treating her pretty badly -- it's like she didn't feel she deserved any better. JG was such a hollow man, as you point out -- he had the looks and the career success, but little to no inner core of values or even character. So what was MR falling for at all? A good-looking guy who was using her, had laughed at her, had insulted and made fun of her?

I think if the characters had a bit more equality, both externally and internally, the whole thing wouldn't have felt so out of balance at the beginning. I guess what it comes down to is I don't need to see our heroine so far down that she's insulted and laughed at wherever she turns at the beginning of the story in order to buy into a journey of character growth, and I really don't need to see our hero be one of the guys doing it.

This all makes it sound like I hated City Hall, and I didn't -- I really loved it! But there were parts at the beginning that made me wince, and I enjoyed the story much more in the second half when the two of them were on a more equal playing field.

I am answering both Jay and Laica with this, so I'm sorry if I quote both opinions here.

First "he had EVERYTHING in terms of looks, respect, power and money, and she had nothing and was so put down by practically everyone."
I am agreeing with Laica that while JG was in a position of influence and power publicly, privately, poor thing, had none.at.all. He had given his life over to his father. He suffered cruelly as a result of how that JERK treated him.

MR managed to do what she wanted when she wanted. Even though she may have been treated like a joke by others, she never felt that way about herself. Not many women could muster the courage to enter a beauty contest. She didn't care what they thought - especially when her competition was less jiggly and had more hair.
I think what she taught JG was HE had to stop letting otheres make him feel inferior. Not to let OTHERS determine his happiness.

KSA is one of my favorite actors, of all time, so I am biased!
Love this discussion!

It's going to be hard keeping up with all the dramas coming up at once. But I prefer it that way that going around trying to find something to watch. That is hell this is just the definition of HEAVEN where there are plenty of dramas to enjoy. LIKE JAVABEANS SAID SLEEP IS OVERRATED. WHO NEEDS IT? WE GOT DRAMAS.
