Do You Hear My Heart? premieres this weekend
by javabeans
Tomorrow is premiere day for MBC’s new weekend drama, Do You Hear My Heart?, and here are its official posters. Not that you can tell much about a drama from its posters, but I think they’re pretty and colorful — even if four of the five leads are practically sporting the same haircut.
(Okay, I’ll stop harping on the hair now. It’s just hard to see that mop and NOT comment on it, you know? I actually think that lead actress Hwang Jung-eum looks cute — but that’s because she’s cute in spite of her hair, not because it looks good. That goes for leading man Kim Jae-won, too.)
The drama features the love story between Dong-joo (Kim Jae-won) and Woo-ri (Hwang Jung-eum), a deaf man who pretends he can hear and a plucky daughter pretending to be dumb to spare the feelings of her dim-witted father (Jung Bo-seok, who’s always great, whether he’s being frighteningly evil like in Giant or funny like in High Kick Through the Roof).
In keeping with that premise, apparently the prop piano in the poster above is supposed to evoke the concept of wordless communication. Uhh, it’s a nice thought, but unless there’s an actual piano in the drama, I’m thinking it’s a stretch.
So far I’m liking what I’ve been reading about this drama, as well as the resumés of its production team (Legend of Hyang Dan, Hon, Fantasy Couple, Last Scandal and Smile, You). I’m not expecting brilliance, but if it turns out to be a heartwarming, funny show, I’ll be a happy blogger.

I hope it turns out to be at least a bit funny. I'm so sick of the melodramas that are airing right now. It's like the fun has gone all out, well except for 49, which was supposed to not be fun but really is.

I also fear that I might get distracted because of the hair.. Otherwise, the story doesn't seem so bad

Maybe they'll start off with mushroom hair then change it halfway? Yeah, right! Once a mushroom, always a mushroom!

Lee Sung-min. Lee! Sung! Min! + Jung! Bo! Seok!
This is not fair world, this is not fair. Pitting the two men I consider LEGENDS together in this -- the kind of show I hate with vehemence.
Not fair, world. *shakes fist*

Bah. Don't mind me, I'm just cynical and a perennial grump who has a natural dislike for all things 'cute' and dare I say, pretentious. Rom-coms and family weekend dramas are generally not my forte.
(Speaking from the heart: I prefer something with an actual story to tell.)
But... Funnily enough, I really liked Smile, You. It was wholesome and satisfying and I loved all the characters (though the extension ruined it somewhat) and since it's the same writer there is hope.
I'm quite fond of all the cast too. --Except Kim Jae-won.
Downloading the first episode. Wish me luck.

I think the piano it's a metaphor. The lead is sitting on it and he doesn't hear anything. And she looks frightened (I think by the music that Kim Jae Won's cute ass is making).

LOL!
As far as a piano to "evoke the concept of wordless communication?"
Wordless communication - check.
Soundless communication - nope.
Metaphor miss.

pretty pretty. from the trailers, it looks like the child actors are going to be great. hopefully when the adults come on, it won't start dragging downward, which happens in almost every drama out there. i'm talking about you the duo!
and i want nam goong min to be a lead one of these days :(

The posters are quite lovely! I agree that they don't say much, if anything, about the drama itself. Do you really think there won't be any piano at all? Pooh. I was kinda hoping this drama was about a shy musician and the woman he loves, and how it finally comes together. Or, in the same vein, the emotionally shuttered musician and the woman who melts his ivory heart. Not so much?
I will not get started on the hair. *grumblegrumble, gripegripe*

It reminds me of the scene in Secret Garden where Ra-im and Oska walk into the fancy dance sporting the same "do".

Can't stand that haircut. It brings back bad memories of myself as a kid. I saw this guy on Youtube from a taiwan show singing Whitney Houston sporting this haircut as well. The haircut detracted from his singing, which was awesome, btw. If this drama were about maids, the title would be "Do You Hear My Stomach?" I know, I know. I can't stop. Help.

I like him in Giant! I want to see him in other drama (I'm not interested in High Kick Trough The Roof).
The premise is good, now Jung Bo-seok (not Kim Jae-won :( ), I'll definitely check this!

I just watched the first episode. The little kids were absolutely adorable.
And yes, there is actually a piano in the drama. xD Woo-ri meets Dong Joo in the school's music room. She asks him to teach her the piano, as she's wanted to play but her mother doesn't have the money. He lives in Seoul, so he can't, but before he leaves he writes down his adress so she can come visit him. Woo-Ri gives him a small hacky sack. I'm sure it will become useful later when they realized they knew each other all those years ago. xD
Sometime later Dong-joo tries to sneak out of the house to teach Woo-ri how to play the piano. He falls off the roof in the process, and when he wakes up from a coma he has lost his hearing.
HIs mother drags him out of the country, and with Jun-Ha/Ma-Ru he learns how to make his disability unapparent. Woo-Ri meanwhile, has been the only one taking care of her father and grandmother.
One day, they meet in the factory, where Woo-Ri thinks Dong-Joo is her brother (Ma-Ru) who ran away soon after their mother died.

I'm quite excited for another Writer Moon drama. She so impressed me with "Smile, You" and it's witty and refreshing wholesomeness. I haven't seen Kim Jae Won in so long, hopefully his acting hasn't gotten rusty.
Think it's going to be good storytelling.
