You’re Beautiful duo reteams for Festival
by javabeans
For those of you who dearly wished You’re Beautiful’s “Shin-woo hyung” would get the girl, here’s the next best thing: Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa have been cast as the leads in an upcoming drama titled Festival.
The drama hops onto the bandwagon of music-related shows, described as a “youth melodrama” that centers around the “dreams, tears, and loves” of the students at an arts university, where students pursue aspirations in dance, song, acting, and literary arts. So… Dream High meets What’s Up, v.2.0? With a dash of Mary Stayed Out All Night, to boot.
Jung Yong-hwa plays Lee Shin, and was given the hearty yes as the male lead thanks to his background as vocalist and guitar for idol band CN Blue. Shin is the vocalist in a pretty-boy band (what a stretch!) who lives and breathes music, who’s enrolled in the applied music department at school. Contrary to his warm and protective Shin-woo from You’re Beautiful, Jung takes on a cold, proud character. You know he’s graduated to the big time when he transitions from the Kind Best Friend to the Darcy. (Sigh. Another one.)
Park Shin-hye once again plays a cute, lively character, Lee Kyu-won, who is enrolled in the classical Korean music department and comes from a long line of classical musicians. Her family is famed for its pansori talents, and she plays the stringed gayageum.
It’s a Pyo Min-su series, which means (in my book) that it’ll be well-paced, with cute moments and some humor; PD Pyo is the director who did Full House, The World They Live In, and last year’s Coffee House. I’ve liked all of his shows (okay, not so much Insoon Is Pretty) but haven’t loved any, so his name isn’t an automatic sell for me.
Festival is scheduled for a June 22 premiere on MBC, making it a Wednesday-Thursday drama.
Um…I’m WAY IFFY on this, for a couple reasons. First is because of the premise; I don’t necessarily think that all these dramas are copycatting each other, since it could be a coincidence/Zeitgeist thing. But while I have enough excitement in me for a What’s Up, I don’t know if I have enough to look forward to both The Musical and Festival as well.
Second is Jung Yong-hwa, whom I never really cottoned to in You’re Beautiful. Oh, I liked his character — who wouldn’t like a sweetie like Shin-woo, even if you were ultimately rooting for Tae-kyung? — but his acting? Eeeeek. To be fair, he had a good episode (the 13th), but really, that was more like a good 5 minutes. To carry a drama on his own? I suppose Playful Kiss is an instance of a second project showing an improvement from the first…but then, that’s not really a drama you want to compare yourself to when you’re hoping for success, is it?

im so excited with this drama..the shinhwa couple will reunite and this time YH will have a happy ending with shinhye...obviously i am a yab and anjell fan and i love this project..i dont think that YH's acting in YAB is that bad, remember that it was his first drama, let's give him a chance to hone his acting craft more..as for shinhye, being typecasted, i dont think so, it was only in YAB that she played the role of a bubbly, naive girl... its just that YAB was so popular and that role made a tremendous mark on her, so she was always identified with that..her roles before YAB were varied, more on the melodrama genre while post YAB, the Cyrano movie, her role was more matured..in taiwanese drama Hayate, she plays a bratty girl...good luck to the festival project..fighting

I sooooooooooo miss YB and was hoping for a YB movie or season 2 or even an AnJELL concert...
this is close enough...
I just miss seeing PSH on the screen!
PSH is such a great actress, YB was her first role where she played her age, most of her series were all 'older' roles..so i really don't mind seeing her in this kind of role again, why not...she's still very young and can definitely carry her own series...
as for YongHwa, let's give him a break, he's a very competitive guy and i'm sure he'll push himself to do better on his second series, hopefully better than KHJ.
i can't wait to hear who the second leads will be...
i wish we can see Shin Hye dance, she is a very good dancer to boot!!!
can't wait!!!

has it really been confirmed or just rumor. i thought Yong-hwa was going to be busy promoting cn blue album? i wish they could have pick an actor instead of a signer or singer who can actually act. i thought through out yb he had the same face expression..... psh is going to make him look bad standing next to her.....i'm still looking foward toward this drama since psh is in it....

im so happy that finally they will get to work together again..my original favorite YAB couple..im sure that just like me, many yab and anjell fans are waiting for this drama..lets give YH a chance to prove his acting and for my favorite park shin hye, i support his role here as a bubbly and lively girl, she's not typecasted in this role, its been a while since YAB..prior to YAB, her roles were more on the melodramas like TOH and STH while after YAB, she gets to play a mature role in Cyrano movie...as for her taiwanese drama, she is the bratty Nagi, so i think, her roles are varied...i am excited on this drama..shinhwa, fighting

Oddly enough, I completely forgot what he looked like in You're Beautiful, lol... so I guess he was pretty forgettable for me. Lee Hong Ki made a much more lasting impression, so I can't say I'm hyped, but I'll probably watch it anyway.

Jung Yong-hwa?........eh. wasn't impressed by his performance in you're beautiful, despite his looks, and I'm not confident that he has enough onscreen presence to lead the show. eh well, he might turn this around and surprise us all...

I loved "You're Beautiful" and I like trendy dramas, so I'm inclined to give this a chance despite the very valid concerns about acting and plot.
However (and I am going to assume the details aren't completely set in stone) - "Lee Shin?" Really? There are a bazillion possible combinations for first names in Korea and they have to name the male lead for this one after the male lead in "Goong?" Dude needs his own identity, yo!

Anyway, so what if Jung Yong-hwa can't act? He's so pretty! ;)

I like Pyo PD-nim, I like all his dramas, except In Soon is pretty :( So perhaps I will check this one out.
Talking about You're Beautiful duo reteams, I wish it is Lee Hong-ki (ho, ho fangirling), instead of Jung Yong-hwa. I can still watch a drama even the acting is bad as long as the character is interesting and well developed, but every time someone mentions "wooden acting", the ones that appear in my mind are this Jung Yong-hwa in YAB and Jaejoong in Heaven Postman. I don't say Hong-ki acting is much better than these two :) I know he's got his Japanese drama already for this year. But a fangirl can dream :D

Oh come on, Park Shin Hye, I know you can do better than this. You've been such a trendy star as of late; I think it's time for you to go on for more meatier roles.
I find it so strange that she ever acted in that melodrama Stairways to Heaven, haha. It's a shame that she hasn't dramatically improved in acting or anything, especially since she started off so young.
On a side note, what happened to her Stairways to Heaven co-star? It's a shame he's such a low-profiled actor. He was so handsome!

i will certainly watch this. First when i read the plot , i was happy cause it says that she would play a talented and rich girl. I thought she would be very serious and maybe cold, but now mmm....well she is cute and all that, but for me is the same as with jgs i think they should take serious and dramatic roles, they have the talent to do so. But then, they're just 20 and 23 so let's them be cute. I'm happy she's in a drama again...and i hope this becomes a hit so she can have more and more projects. (btw in Cyrano she was mature and that scene in the restorant was great ...she can act and play a mean girl too)
The plot for me is very attracting i loveeee musical/art dramas, most of the time they've got an awesome ost (Which is important for me in a drama). I hope this has good music, and a good plot..if not i won't watch it...nooope Who am i kiding?? i will watch it anyways...as Shin Hye fan ..and because i like yong hwa, he's cute so i support his works (he is not an actor but he might improved. But for me he's more charismatic and has better acting skills (if any) than khj)
I'm looking forward to this...no negative feelings about it yet ...so for now i´m more than happy ...yay!!!!

I'd like to see KHJ and JYH "fighting" over PSH, and JGS plus Hongki singing some gibberish song in the background in one drama. That would be funny composition of Wood and Sparkle. When sparkle meets the dry wood, the fire starts so nice^^

I really like his character from You're Beautiful too, and I loveee Yonghwa from the show "we got married" where he supposedly doesn't really... act, and makes me laugh with the child-like personnality. I can see my anticipation for Festival but I pray with all my heart his acting as gone miles and miles farther than where it was in YB. If not I guess I can't help but be only a fan of his music XD

Off topic:
Park Shin Hye, Yoon Eun Hye, Miss A's Suzy Bae and probably Han Hyo Joo could pass off as sisters. I think they look very much alike in one way or another. It would be fun to see them altogether in a movie.

So this drama basically follows the same route of those typical idol-musical dramas with the addition of the genius-trend that dramabeans had a rant on recently.
But I bet this one will get a slot of recapping on dramabeans regardless of what it turns out to be, because it's a hot idol dramas (cough*MSOAN*cough). Unless they finally decide to pull off an aberdeen_angus/kaedejun recapping and bless us with more serious and less high-profile dramas.

I like YH with CNBlue. As a musician on the stage, but not so much as an actor.
I have apprehensions with him taking the male lead in "festival". He needs a lot of improvement in the acting side.
YH is like a "hairspray". So prim and proper. Like a "perma press" or "pomade" or "strong hold gel". I'm scared it will become another PK.
Lee Hongki should have been a better choice if production company wants someone from ANJell cast. I love LHK - exudes passion in singing and acting. In fact, his vocal is much much better than some idols.
But, I'll give YH the benefit of the doubt. The Director is very good (e.g. he enabled Rain to act) so probably he can do the same to YH.
As for Shin Hye. I like her a lot. Directors love her acting, her discipline and professionalism.
I know she'll help YH, just like in YAB.

I wasn't really that big of a fan of You're Beautiful...I only watched it because I loved watching Hwang Tae Kyung's evolution as a character. Personally, I thought that both Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa's characters were kind of annoying--Go Mi Nam was too cutesy/really thickheaded and Kang Shin Woo was frustratingly unable to convey his real emotions to Mi Nam and basically spent the whole show in silent and noble angst.
*ducks for cover from flying objects thrown by YB fans*
Of course, I realize that my personal grievances with their characters on YB really don't have anything to do with PSH and JYH's acting, so who knows, maybe I'd really like this upcoming drama! I'll be keeping an eye out to see how it does.

These are some interesting comments. So people are dissing YH's acting because his character in YAB wasn't able to express his feeling well? What a strange reason to dislike his acting since that was the character he was playing.
Anyway the plot sounds pretty bad but I will watch regardless (what can I say Im a YH fanboy). He himself has constantly expressed disappointment about his acting so hopefully he'll improve. Tho seriously can dramas stop with the cold/distant cliche's?

Love Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa in You are Beautiful. Happy for them having their own drama. And Park Shin Hye should enjoy her younger year and do many dramas like YAB. i started watching korean dramas almost 10 years ago. i was around 12 or somethin. Even now i'd like to watch sweet rom-com better than Temptation of wife kind of dramas. Loved YAB, Still Marry me, Dream High, Coffee Prince. But my first drama love and forever is What Happened in Bali. Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won.
