Sunwoo Sun quits Crime Squad
by girlfriday
Sunwoo Sun has announced that she’s dropping out of KBS’ current Monday-Tuesday cop procedural Crime Squad, reportedly due to some problems between the producers and her agency. Okay, I don’t want to be all lemons-out-of-lemonade about this if she’s being ousted for a bad reason, but I’m actually glad she’s being written out. I don’t know beans about this actress, but her character is a total energy suck. I really get sleepy every time she’s onscreen.
And I don’t want to pass judgment too quickly, as this is the first I’m seeing of her, but there’s got to be a correlation between her performance and my great dislike for her character. She’s just totally unbelievable in both ends of the spectrum, which she’s had to play: a tough cop, and a scaredy cop. Chances are, you’d have to be good at one of those, right?
The producers have released a statement that Sunwoo Sun was dissatisfied with her character from the get-go. Don’t blame her; I’d be pissed if I got to work and my character was all “Boo hoo, I’m too scared to fight…but then I also want to join the squad with the toughest cases…but I’m scared.” WTF? Sunwoo Sun’s agency has in turn stated that she has been responsibly sticking with the production, even longer than she intended. (She reportedly wanted to drop out by Episode 5.)
She’s the one dropping the drama, but I think Show will be better off without her, ’cause I enjoy everyone’s scenes but hers. So…silver lining, yeah?
Her character will be making her last appearance on Monday’s Episode 7, and has been written out, Episode 8 onwards. Crime Squad airs Monday-Tuesday on KBS.

I'm not sure if anyone is reading about this drama since it's completely aired and it's ratings were never better than middling, but I had a few things I wanted to say about it.
Crime Squad, in a nutshell, is the Korean take on NCIS-type American shows. There's a small, intense group of crime-fighters with edgy personalities that get completely fleshed out as the series goes on, as their lives interweave and overlap more and more. Not everything comes together in episode 1 or 2.
Two best things about the drama: tight writing of complete stories and better-than-average casting. This drama screams for follow-up series IF it can keep the same cast that it had in the last half of the series. They are the Gibbs-Ziva-Abby-Tony-Ducky of Korea, and mid-season cast departures and replacements SERVED the drama well.
Two good things about the drama: excellent pacing and directorship. The music does not distract, so that's another bonus point for the series.
At times cliche as they begin, the storylines evolve over a two-episode arc and leave the cliche behind by even-numbered episodes' end. If you are into fictional crime TV (American or otherwise) and k-dramas, give Crime Squad a 4-episode chance (the point at which I knew I'd finish the series no matter what paths they took me down.)
It's a better series than the ratings can account for, but it seems most bailed on it for other shows. It's a good summer watch from beginning to end,

i hope you don't mind me saying this JB but i don't agree that she made me sleepy when i see her on the scree as you said, i really liked her in Queen of H. better than the lead actress, I'm sorry, she's a natural beauty & i think if given a chance to prove her potential as a good actress, she's got what it takes! i like her soft kinda beauty! i'm one of her biggest fans since QofH....anyhow, we're all entitled to our own opinion so this happens to be min!
I'm very sorry to hear she's no longer a part of CS coz i was looking f/ward to watching it!
Peace!

I don't know about the natural beauty part, but I do agree about her in Crime Scene. I thought she was a great addition to the squad. what a shame to see her go.

ok, dont start with this plastic surgery/natural beauty business.
But anyways, I loved her in the squad. She was awkward at first, but I felt like every thing was starting to come together---and I actually really really like Crime Squad...even though some things are WAAAAY to coincidencial for my taste.
:(
sad to see that she didnt like the show...and that she has to leave it :(((

I was surprised the way they introduced her in Epi 2, being a policewoman, but can't find the baddy? How does it get her into the Elite Crime Squad team? She was alright in Epi 2 when she teamed up with detective Park Se-Hyuk. From epi 4 onward, she seemed to gain a lot of weight? Her face looked rounder. Who knows, this change might even help the ratings.

She is a good actress . I loved her in previous dramas.
But in Crime Squad, Song Ji Hyo totally outshined her.
I guess it's because of the character.
If they make her a cold kickass police then it might be different.
Her drop out won't affect much on the drama anyways.
So bad, I like her as a actress.
They decide to drop out in the middle of drama, that's kind of irresponsible.
I hope they will bring a new character to the drama.
I don't mind a newbie.

Korean dramas are all about the characters. I mean there are no true guest stars. I'm glad I didn't start watching this yet and I'm upset that I'm reading this! I hope by the time this show is on us tv that I've forgotten that I read this. However I was really looking forward to seeing her throughout because I loved her in will it snow . . . ( or I loved will it snow and she was in it.) Okay I'm off to forget.

She's a good actress and her role sounds absolutely horrible in this drama. Many korean writers should be taking seminars on how to not make the secondary lead roles suck.

NOOO!...I just started watching this yesterday and she's my favorite character so far...I wasn't particularly taken by Song Ji Hyo's character (too annoying) or Park Sun Young's (a bit boring) and I love how she's the only girl that gets to kick ass in this drama and I was really looking forward to her development from a scaredy cop (and to know the backstory behind that) to a badass lady cop so this is really disappointing... :( ...I will continue to watch this because I do like most of the characters here and the tone of the drama as a whole (very refreshing)...I admit I do think Sunwwo Sun's portrayal had been a dull in the last 2 or so eps and I think her lack of enthusiasm might explain that so this may be better for her....BUT if they kill her off to get her character off the show I will be pissed....We will have words show (hope u dont mind me borrowing ur words GF :p

I'm taking it easy for Crime Squad, patiently waiting for subs, so I'm at episode 3 and 1/2 (since four isn't done subbing yet). I liked her in Woochi and in Queen of Housewives, so for her Woochi badassness I was excited to see she was coming into Crime Squad. I was hoping she'd have a reason why she's scared of fighting and if her hoobae looked up to her because she was the awesomest crime fighter on their team (was she kickass before something happened that left her scared? I mean, how else can you explain how kickass she was at the harbor scene when she finally grew a spine?). But alas, nothing so far for her story. Truthfully, I was hoping she would prove to the guys that a woman had it in her to be on the their team. But I was too busy paying attention to the cute interaction (although few and far between. . . so far) between Park Se Hyuk and Jo Min Joo. And because I grew up watching cop shows from Walker Texas Ranger and Nash bridges, to CSI and NICS, I try to ignore the odd flow of procedures in the show. Even worse, how unrealistic some things are. Example, when Min Joo looked up articles of Se Hyuk's daughter's death, they had a picture on the site of Se Hyuk holding his phone in shock when he heard the gunshot and as the car slowly headed towards the cafe. Like really? In real life no reporter would have been there to take a picture of him in shock before anything really happened. I just thought it was funny. So I roll my eyes when things don't make sens, and continue to cheer on my favorite characters (and hope Jung Il Do gets punched soon, just saying. HAHAHA.).

I think GF have the two actress mixed up, the one sucking the enegry out of the drama is not Sunwoo, but the reporter. If you got sleepy watching Sunwoo Sun then you must been in coma status watching the leads.
The drama is ok, it one of those I would only watch raw. Everyone either looks dirty, or seem like a child, SunWoo character was the only one that I looked foreward to seeing develop. I like the fact she had a storyline outside of being a 3 person in a love triangle. I think she a good actress and it showed in this drama as while as other she played in. I think because GF eyes wore close due to being so tired that she missed the excitment of Sunwoo character.

Nope, sorry, but I would have to respectfully disagree about Song Ji-hyo sucking. I like the energy her character has (except for some of her random crying scenes). There is a certain cuteness that comes with her that I can't explain, yet I enjoy every time she shows up on screen.
Although I do agree that I had hopes for Sunwoo Sun's character and how she would change the minds of the men about her abilities as a female cop.

Why did she sign on when she did not like the character from the beginning? I thought there would be more character development after she joined the special task force,as it was supposed to be tough for women but she seemed to be a prop. I had only watched 4 episodes. I like the tone of the first episode but after that it got to be the usual police stuff, and the rouge policeman verses the unyielding boss, and the reporter trying to get a story.

Well, in the first few episodes, her character was given more to do than hold up a wall, which is essentially what she did this week. So maybe she just wasn't getting enough lines after her little arc that brought her into the squad.
OTOH, it's not like it was going to be a 6 month, 50 episode shoot, so I'm not sure what dropping out would do for her.

That's kind of weird, because I enjoyed her performance in "Will it Snow for Christmas?" and didn't Kim Seung-woo drop out of this after he was casted too? I mean, he dropped out before he actually started filming, but still, he dropped out. This makes me kind of suspect. Maybe it's the writing? (Haven't had chance to catch episodes yet, so I can't judge how good/bad the writing is.)

yeah, i think this is no big loss.
she is a bad actress, i have seen her in everything, and her plastic surgery is so unnatural too! :P
i read in the korean news that she was unhappy that her role was not getting as much screen time. i guess she thought she would be one of the show's leading characters as the lone woman cop.
her character on this show has bee inconsistent and she always looks like she is sulking over something. also, i thought it was wierd how all of a sudden she was using "banmal" towards the other senior cop. he is still her sunbae on the squad, also i think he was one of her instructors in the police academy. weird.

Happened to watch Happy Together recently with Sunwoo Sun as one of the guests. It seemed her nickname is ***Fish ( forgot which type of fish) coz her lips were like thick and wide, and she recounted how she was so mercilessly teased about it in school and how she cried herself to sleep then.
The hosts of Happy Tog consoled her that her succulent lips are now the rage and she's lucky to have such natural lips :)

I have to say I am indifferent to her character. I see how they can groom her into the cop she desires to be but we have enough grooming and learning go on with the main character which makes her story seem like an unneeded story. If she started as a baddy cop in the beginning it would have made for a better story. But I'm not mad at this turnout. It better be a clean break though!

I think SWS has her reason for dropping out. It appears to me that the PD changed the script after Song Ji Hye joined the cast. They decided to bank on Song Il Gook and Song Ji Hye as a couple with a twist of the ex-wife.

Anyway, many people want to see the Song=song couple, and not Song il Gook with Sun woo sun

so, it's OKAY, alright and acceptable for her to "quit" cos her character is boring... but NOT OKAY for Lee Da Hae to quit east of eden... Hmmm..
I thought a great actress should have the ability make a boring character a BOMB no matter what...

Interesting. I think she did a pretty good job in WISFC. I found her character even more interesting than Han Ye-seul's. I have yet to catch on to CS but it was probably best for both parties (drama and SSW) that she leaves if none of them are benefiting with her staying on. I hope she gets to do something similar to her WISFC role because that one fitted her like a glove. =)

I think the PD made some changes in the original script. When this drama was introduced, KSW and SWS were perceived as the main casts, together with Song Il Guk. But now, both of them are gone.
Korean dramas are always like that. The story is not final and keeps on changing according to audience's views and whims.
There is a replacement ladycop and she looks tough and smart. If only this kind of role was given to SWS, I don't think she would leave the drama.
