Welcome To the Show features idol lineup
by javabeans
More idols, and more shows featuring idols: A happy trend, or not?
There’s probably no easy answer to that, but we’ll be getting another example of the kind with a new SBS sitcom, Welcome To the Show (working title), which has three pop idols in leading roles: 2PM’s Nickhun (pictured above), f(x)’s Sulli, and 2AM’s Im Seul-ong, the latter of whom we saw in last year’s Personal Taste.
It sounds like an interesting idea, although how well it works is all in the execution; sitcoms tend to be much more about the actors and their charm, not the stories. Welcome To the Show is planning — as of its pilot, at least — to take on a one-act format, which means that each episode will be a self-contained story. Furthermore, it’ll somehow mix sitcom format with music program Inki Gayo, which…I have no idea how that’ll play out.
According to a production rep, the show began filming its first episode on February 13, although they are unsure as of yet whether the sitcom will take on a regular broadcasting format: “If it ends up as a regular broadcast, we’ll rework some parts to fit the style, and even cast members can be changed.”
Er…sounds like a lot of question marks that perhaps should be worked out prior to filming, no? Though I can see the reason for the rush, considering that the show is looking at premiering in mid-March. Even though there’s no premiere date set yet. Whatever. I guess you could just film a brand-new show totally on the fly and playing everything by ear, why not?

ill be the first to admit he is charming.... but all the "acting" ive seen him do so far leads me to think that he is a charming house plant... nice to look at and it makes you want to feed and water it... but that is all it is... a plant that just sits there and looks pretty.

i haven't watched anything with Nickhun in yet, but think the boy has charm.
that show, the Jalgeum (sp?) Quartet... hm, i don't understand the craze/hype about Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki. Seperately they played their characters strong. But whenever they are together, too much over-acting. Borderline cheesiness even.
That scene when one guy cried to stop the other from going out doing Robin Hood stuff... geez, the shouting, nagging, the too much waterwork, all under the moon!! soo cheesy *shudder, shudder*

You did NOT just insult Geol Oh and Yeo Rim...
*sharpens claws*
Nah, just kidding. That scene where SJK was stopping YAI WAS a bit... overacted. Or perhaps it was weirdly written because you didn't know at that time why Geol Oh was very important to Yeo Rim.
You only figure out in the end why SJK's character cared too much about losing Geol Oh. Because Geol Oh was someone who didn't care about social classes while Yeo Rim had daddy-deep social-class issues...

@Natalie: your Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki comment was off topic, this post is about idols and the comment to which you replied mentioned Yoochun specifically in the context of idols who act.
Of course you can always make comparisons beyond that and count in the professional actors - in this case, YAI and SJK. Which i don't think is a bad thing, despite an obvious mismatch between them: a cross-field rookie vs. experienced professional actors.
About your real-star comment, if I didn't misremember, the specific SKKS scenes that scored the highest in korean viewership rating were all Yoochun's (in the ~20% range, the average for the entire show was about 10%). Who was the real star of the show?
Glad that you found him decent, though. Cheers!
ps: i have to say: poor guy. he worked extraordinarily hard on this project, did a progressively fine job in it, and in the end got acknowledged by many including critics. why are inappropriate, unconvincing comparisons like this still around?

LOL....I was about to asked ins song jong ki and Yoo ah started as idols too? glad read through your comment. Yup, they were excellent actors but I guess if we talk about idols foraying into acting, Mickey Yoochun indeed is the first person that comes to mind. I still remember someone, not sure if it was JB or GF, who said historical dramas are difficult one to perform for actors coz it exposes the weaknesses in their acting chops if any as compared to regular contemporary dramas and I agree with that one. So seeing Yoochun doing his real "first" acting job in a historical drama is indeed commendable as he did justice to the role of LSJ. I must also say, among the 4 of them, not taking anything from the 3 actors, Yoochun;s role, in my opinion is actually kind of hard to play and he pulled it off. Next, I want to see Lee Seung Gi in this kind of role and see if he can also pull it off. He's a good idol turn actor too but as I said, contemporary drama is one thing while historical is another.

I don't think you can compare Yoochun to Yoo Ah In and Song Joong Ki really in SKKS. In addition to Yoochun being a newcomer, the character of Sun Joon was much more subdued than the other two. Jae Shin was the one who sometimes acted before thinking, the scruffy rebel, the emotional one, his character just attracts more people (he also acted the character well). Yong Ha, my favorite character, was just.. out there and confident and playful. Sun Joon was a quiet, stoic intellect who mostly kept his emotions on the down low. In terms of that, I think Yoochun played this character well (he was also my second favorite, something about a nerdy hero just appeals to me!).

As much as i love SJK YAH i think they were overhyped in SKKS
i really really really really loved gul oh but yoochun was the star of SKKS
its kinda weird to see that korea has yoochun mania but here on an international forum most people including JB and GF give more credit to yoo ah in. I guess it all comes down to personal preference.
Playing LSJ convincingly esp. for a rookie would have been very challenging. compared to moon jaeshin LSJ is a more subtle character and definitely not you run of the mill kdrama hero that all of us kdrama viewers are programmed to love from the get go
Also i know that SJK was inspired by yoochuns real life persona and capt. jack sparrow but he did overdo the "cute" and the crazy sometimes.

"its kinda weird to see that korea has yoochun mania but here on an international forum most people including JB and GF give more credit to yoo ah in. I guess it all comes down to personal preference."
======
l agree with you on the personal preference.
some other reasons: one is the language gap.
one other is how one manages one's drama viewing.
some people don't understand the language.
and having hundreds of dramas on their to-watch list, they zip, even skim through scenes.
they multi-task while watching.
they open two, three screens to watch 2,3 dramas at same time.
they fast-forward.
they play music in the background.
etc
so, in-your-face overacting (some people call it "expressive") becomes more eye-catching, wild, hot, smexy.

lol :D agree with you
i confess to doing a lot of those things including playing multiple dramas in multiple tabs but i only did that with sub par dramas like playful kiss and BOF
However i paid extra attention to SKKS because i really loved the drama and i find it hard to be emotionally invested if i only observe the acting at a purely superficial level.
SKKS was fresh and light without being overly sweet and had this quality where you forgive its flaws because it moves you. Even now i feel uplifted when i listen to the OST (Junsu!!) . It might not have been the "best" technically but it is one of my all time favorites.
also i am not korean but even i could appreciate the nuances of yoochuns acting
yoochun is love!!!

Oh, Rose! You started an avalanche of comments just because of our Micky Yoochun and the amazing Jalgeum Quartet of SKKS. Just goes to show how these guys have changed the landscape of sageuk kdramas and how idols-turned-actors are now perceived. Agree: Yoochun should not be compared with the other 2 male actors because he was a greenhorn in this field. For his performance in SKKS he did an outstanding job for a comparative newbie like him. Also, the role required more subtle acting that even the pros say is more difficult to portray for even the more experienced among them. Another idol-turned-actor who gave others a run for their money is Lee Seung Ki of Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance and MGIAG. But I think the roles he played so far were not as difficult and does not seem to veer away too far from his personality in real life.

You're right! While LSG played familiar roles to his personality, Yoochun had to portray a totally different character: he's such a dork/wacky person who had to play LSJ!
Btw, I loved watching him/them in BTS cuts, during my SKKS withdrawal period.

Oy. I am so over these love triangles. They've done been a million times before. They need to spice this mess up. I could really go for a love pentagon, or a love nonagon. If they're really ambitious, maybe they could aim for a truncated love trapezohedra or a love icosidodecahedron? That would be awesome!

Ah, I once saw a music video for a really cute song which was probaly a love dodecahedron... The person loved another person who loved another who in turn loved another, etc etc, until it came right back to the original person. And it didn't help that the singer was in almost every scene, apparently stalking the, "Where's Wally?" style! ;)

Sullli should stick to acting because to be frankly honest she can't really sing. Same sentiments to another idol actress SNSD's Yoona, who can't really sing as well and would of had a pretty decent acting career had she pursued it instead of singing. I really liked her 9ends2outs, and minus the awkwardness with her male costars, she did decent in Cinderella Man and You are my destiny.

Eeeeh, Oh, My School (100 points out of 100) ruined SHINee's Minho for me. He just became too annoying for me to the point that I wonder if he's like that in real life. Now, I can't stand it if he's in Let's Go, Dream Team 2. XP
On the original topic (sorry Carinne, I'm gonna include my comment here since I don't really like making multiple posts), I don't care if idols are on a drama or not as long as they deliver. I know people get mad because they feel these roles end up getting taken away from real actors who need to make a living, but truthfully that's showbiz for you. It's a dog-eat-dog world and EVERYONE needs to make a living. I mean, I don't hear much complaints about when actors try to crossover and be singers, why can't singers do the same? My problem with idols from groups getting casted into sitcoms/dramas/movies is that when said idol is from a group I tend to be biased for or against them based on whether I've seen them on a Variety Show that I like. For 2PM? I like Chansung for his being on Dream Team and Wooyoung as Chipmunk on Dream High (wow, the Dream Brothers?), so anything with Nickhun just makes me roll my eyes. For 2AM it would be Changmin for his SGB and National Heroes role (and because the boy has some excellent singing chops... His vocals get pretty explosive. We tend to joke that it's because of his mouth. XD) so I can never see the appeal for Jo Kwon. For f(x) it would be Amber because she may not talk a lot, but that girl has charisma that has caught many fan's by surprise (LOVE HER!), so Victoria always seems too girly for me. Etc.
Disclamer: I'm not an idol fan so much as a Variety Show nutcase. I don't think I like any one of 2PMs songs, although I'm pretty aware of what they are. I only like one 2AM song (and for Changmin, I also like his one title song as Homme). I only like two f(x) songs. So I'm not defending idols because I like them, I just think we gotta look at this from the money point of view. You know money? That thing everyone needs to survive in this world? That coke bottle? That necessary evil? Yeah, money. People need it, rather they be idol or actors - or us normal broke folk in school - and if you've got popularity why not capitalize on it? Remember Capitalism? Yeah, that thing Americans and many other nations protect with their last breath? Yeah, gotta go where the money is.

I don't know...I am having more and more trouble becoming interested in shows containing Idol stars. Far too many of them seem to have been wiped of all real personality when they entered their promotional companies, and their acting reflects that lack of authenticity.
I thought Micky Yoochun did really well in SKKS, but the character he played also had, at the beginning, a very wooden quality that might actually have benefited him as he started. Nickhun has a cute personality, and so does Im Seulong, but I don't know if they have the ability to portray real depth of feeling.
Of course it is a sitcom...so who knows if depth of feeling will really even be necessary, LOL!! XD

personally I don't mind Idols in sitcoms. They typically don't require expert acting skills and the whole mixing it with Inkigayo sounds slightly different even for a sitcom.
Hopefully this will open actual roles for younger actors.
Though I'd like to point out that the whole idols in actual drama's has been sort of working in favor of the actors though. With SKKS, a lot of people started watching b/c of Yoochun, but Yoo Ah-in stole the show. Same with Dream high, KSH is stealing the show and gaining a lot of attention which means more roles for them. A silver lining??

Not almost painful to watch, it IS painful to watch. And it's so mean of me as he's my bias but I can't stop LOLing every. Single. Time. It's awful but ....ahahahahahaaha. It's so horrible you can't help but laugh.
I guess the bright side is uh...since then he hasn't been nearly as bad as that clip?

Not a good trend. If I want to see idols , I will watch variety shows and music programs. Frankly if I am watching a drama/sitcom/movie I would prefer to see actual actors . I think its a bad trend to have these dramas chock full of idols because it lessens not only the acting quality but lessens the opportunities for really talented rookie actors to get themselves some exposure. Many talented veteran kdrama/kcinema actors got their start in sitcoms, the same for some of our younger generation faves likes Lee Minho.
I mean don't get me wrong, I have no problem if an idol gets a role here and there if they prove they can act but to have so many idols in one drama after another is a bit overkill. I mean I am a DBSK fan but Shim Changmin has no place being added to Athena especially with the caliber of actors in it already. In this case I am not so bothered with Seulong because he has a couple roles now under his belt and Sulli was a child actress before she was an idol but Nickhun.....

I totally agree. I really dislike this trend. I can't remember the last time I saw a drama that's completely idol-free and truthfully I find that a real shame. I watch movies/dramas for a reason and that's because they have actors. It's ridiculous how some idols get a lead role while they're worse than bad.
Nichkhun's a beauty, but I'll skip this one.

Hmm... more idol dramas. I'm kinda mixed on this one. I noticed that when idols act, they either "have it" or they "don't." For these specific idols, I think Sulli would probably do good since she was a pretty good child actress. It would be kind of interesting to see her as an actresses as a grown-up.
But I think having a drama with all idols might be a bad idea. Usually if the cast is mixed with veteran actors / actresses and idols, then there is more of a balance of acting skills.

Sulli's a child actress, so I can see this for her. Her acting (even despite it being years and years ago) has always been a better chance than her singing with me, so...I don't know, if she was a good child actress I hope it's carried on into now (though even now, she's still just 17). But yeah, I think I mean, you can't really say she's an idol wanting to jump in. Technically, it's the opposite. Seulong's had Personal Taste and that movie so he started small and moved up, which is good. Khun er...Khun's my idol bias, but...his acting...if he has a role similar to how he is it'll work but his acting is pretty bad right now. lol. But maybe a sitcom will help? And hopefully out of all three he has a smaller role, because unless he's improved dramatically, I don't see him doing a big one.
But only three of the castlist has been released...maybe they're the only big idols? I'll wait until the final castlist and story is released.
Seriously, from Sulli's case, though, I'm wondering how many would-be-young-actors end up becoming idols just because they don't see a future in acting. I mean, Sulli was a good child actress and could have stayed on the route, but signed on with SM. How many idols are there that wanted to be actors, but were signed on by an agency and turned to idols instead?

Actually Sulli has always been signed with SM even when she was just acting. She was probably under SM's roster of actors including lee yeonhee and go ara until they decided to put her in an idol group. And I don't think it's because she doesn't see a future in acting, I see lots of cases of aspiring actors who are in idol groups just to get their names out there and probably cuz it's easier to get acting opportunities, hence the idol invasion of acting industry. Plus the actors of idol groups are usually the ones that are not the best singers of their groups (sulli, yoona, siwon, sohee did that one movie) Sorry fans.

lol, really? I completely forgot when Sulli signed on (she was...yeah. I've forgotten). Huh....yeah, I pretty much agree with you about how aspiring actors are in idol groups because it really is easier to become known that way. (And of f(x), Victoria was first signed on as a model/actress category, though she was picked because of amazing dancing, and then put into an idol group. lol. So that's a group where 2/5 members weren't in SM for singing)
And yeah....it is true actors aren't the best singers (though isn't Siwon partially deaf as well?) and often also the faces of the groups.
Actually, for idols that really aren't great singers and don't have much of a singing future after idol-ship is over, acting really is one of the only ways to go (unless they go hosting or producing or something), so in that case I really don't mind idols entering the acting field...provided, that is, they do well once in it.

I think they're doing this type of show because of the success of Dream High and all its Idol stars.
I've been a follower of Khun and Victoria on WGM, but lately they've become sickeningly sweet and a bit over-done in my opinion.

lol this is just funny how the article is about nickhun and other idols starting off as actors, but people started to shift it to micky yoochun and abt skks haha.
but i do agree that the actors that stood out and did a good job in acting were song jooki and his friend. they deserved to win trophies for their performance instead of a joke trophy of them being the best couple award. :(

I'm not sure. I feel like Dream High filled my quota for idol dramas for a good year at least.
I love Nichkhun, I love Seulong... I think I'd watch anything with them.
Should've cast Victoria. That would've made this WGM fangirl squeal for real(:

After the pleasantly addicting surprise that was Dream High, I no longer wish to judge a drama by its idol-stacked cast, I swears! I also happen to think Nichkhun and Seulong are all sorts of charming and adorable; lets hope their natural charm comes through in their acting. I'm not too familiar with Sulli, but I hope her stint as a child actress will make her watchable. Is JYP behind this somehow? If he is, then it just might be good. That man is a genius.

I'm ok with idols become an actor if they really start from the bottom and then prove their way to the top. Start from small role, then improve to 2nd lead role or and then lead role if their acting is good and improving.
Imagine these idols get their lead role, and doesn't matter they can/can not act, while Yoo Ah-in, Song Joong-ki, Kim Jae-wook, Bae Soo-bin and other rockie actors with several dramas under their belt and their acting still can not have their lead role, said the world is unfair, it still bother me.

Another idol filled drama???? I'm so sick of idol filled dramas : / Why can't we have a drama with plain ole' good rookie actors or just actors. Not saying that the idols can't act, they can..... to a certain level that is. Just, I'm willing to bet those trained to act will act better. Will these idols prove me wrong? We'll see... Cause the others were... meh.. XD

I've seen Nichkhun act... he's not explicitly terrible, he's just not very good. I'm not sure I could watch an entire episode of him as a main lead, but I can handle a 10 min guest appearance.
idk, maybe he'll surprise me... I'm going to keep an open mind and stay positive.

I may quit kdrama if the trend continues.
It applies to idols i love.
i call myself a huge shinee minho(i love jonghyun too but minho deserve more love than he currently have) fan and often hate how everyone likes the other 4 but not him when he's equally, cute ,funny and crazy.
Honestly,i haven't watch his drama 'Piano' yet.
I cannot bear to watch it.

Nichkhun definitely has the CHARM. Acting wise...I think he's pretty good. He may not be the best best, but he's good. I've seen all his cameo and his acting as Moon Geun Young's role in Cinderella sister. He did a pretty good job protraying Moon Geun Young's character in Cinderella Sister I thought.

Anyways, I'm not really into sitcoms, so hopefully this sitcom will change my mind. And
“If it ends up as a regular broadcast, we’ll rework some parts to fit the style, and even cast members can be changed.”
What?! So the cast could change? Khun, Seulong, and Sulli could change in the cast?

I'm not really into K-Pop, and I don't know the names of any members of any boy bands except FT Island and DBSK, so I really had no idea who Nickhun was.. From the picture I actually thought he was Go Soo. Does anyone else see the resemblance?!

I find it very annoying that idols are trying or pursuing acting. It's not that I don't mind, but as an audience... have they done their homework and training before pursuing the filming industry? Because when I watch them act, I cringe every time because the acting is sooo sooo bad. And I'm left wondering why they were selected to be cast in the first place. Fame? Money? Connections? Appearance? Probably one of the above or all of the above.
I just think... if you're going to act, take some acting lessons beforehand. In other words, study and learn how to act before getting a role.
