‘Season Drama’ PD Yoon Suk-ho returns to dramaland

Chances are, if you’ve seen a k-drama, you’ve seen one that this guy’s made. Veteran drama producer-director, known best for his quartet of Season Dramas (Autumn Fairy Tale, Winter Sonata, Summer Scent, Spring Waltz), PD Yoon Suk-ho is planning a comeback in 2011, five years since his last project.

He’s being purposely careful not to give away details, but he’s describing it as a “pure melodrama,” as in pure and innocent (think: first love, throwback themes of innocence and youth). It’s reportedly a departure from the Season Dramas, which is a welcome shift, since we’ve covered all four seasons now, yeah?

In case you haven’t seen the set of dramas that catapulted PD Yoon, and more importantly the actors, to unparalleled heights of fame:

Autumn Fairy Tale (2000), pictured top-left, starred fresh-faced Song Seung-heon, Song Hye-gyo and Won Bin in a tragic siblings-not-siblings tale that could be renamed Tears vs. Tissues.

He followed that up with Winter Sonata (2002), pictured top-right, which I don’t have to describe to you. Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo became gods (no, really…not exaggerating, although I AM scratching my head), and I became allergic to amnesia.

The seasons were finished off with Summer Scent (2003), pictured above-right, with Sohn Ye-jin and Song Seung-heon, and Spring Waltz (2006), pictured above-left, starring Han Hyo-joo and Suh Do-young.

But if you’re anything like us (I’m including javabeans because I refuse to feel old alone, damnit), your relationship with PD Yoon’s dramas goes back…WAY back…

He helmed the first drama that both jb and I were obsessed over: 1994’s Feeling, pictured above, starring the One and Only, love of my, I mean our, um…jb’s life, Lee Jung-jae, along with pop stars Sohn Ji-chang, and Kim Min-jong.

If there’s one man to blame for the ensuing lifelong addiction, the lengths of which you’ve all witnessed, it’s PD Yoon. Okay, maybe it’s Lee Jung-jae. Splitting hairs.

Then it’s no coincidence that he then went on to direct another of my all-time old-school favorites, Propose (1997), pictured below, starring Ryu Shi-won and Kim Hee-sun as two best friends who don’t realize that they are in love with each other, because they’re idiots…which means of course that it was my drama CRACK for the better part of the nineties.

I have to say, I liked his stuff more when he was doing trendies, like Feeling and Propose. The Season Dramas are of course what he’s best known for and justifiably so (even if they’re weepy, they’re gorgeous and moody). The new project sounds closer in theme to the Season Dramas, and Yoon himself said that his new project would not be a trendy, but a melo about the beauty of love. (Cue strings of earnestness.)

PD Yoon’s comeback drama will air on KBS in the latter half of the year, and mostly I’m just dying to see who he casts. ‘Cause if you can’t tell from the names above, this guy knows how to pick tomorrow’s stars.

First of all...YAY!!! I loved all of his previous works, the seasons dramas all 4 of them were on of the first dramas I've watched and what really started it all for me aside from Full House. I for one, can't wait to see what he has in store for us all. Gotta prepare me some kleenex tissues haha :-P So looking forward to this :-)

Only watched Winter Sonata and Spring Waltz. SSH put me off in the other 2 dramas. Winter Sonata has its moments, and the lovely OST and beautiful backdrops. And I loved the first love segment. Never watched BYJ before that and WS made me his fan. Spring Waltz was just ok, liked the girl, thought the guy was cute. I remember him speaking some dreadful foreign language...foreign cos it was unintelligible. English? Swedish? Manglish? My fav dream couple would be PSH, cos he can cry and make me cry, and KTH, cos she's beautiful. Plot...um....PSH meets KTH in high school, falls in love, they get into an accident, he loses his memory, she meet him again after 10 years, they fall in love again, discover they are step-siblings, he's so mad he cuts off all his sleeves, dons checked vests, perms his hair and colours it a breezy bright orange. Hm...strangely familiar....

TROLOL...

PSH also plays piano, used to have some heart problems, and KTH discovers PSH got a heart transplant from her old boyfriend!!!

Dude, I am telling you, SSH never changed. If you go back to Autumn Fairy Tale and Summer Scent, you see the oh-so-endearing head tilt et cetera. But he is still so beautiful to look at......

Gosh, thanks for telling me about the head tilt, clichique...it was on my mind: did he head tilt from the beginning? LOL I just noticed the frown in Autumn's Tale....he looked real unhappy in that famous pic with him frowning as he holds a pallid-faced dead-looking girl in his arms. He looked miserable, and it put me off. In Summer Scent I watched a bit, got put off by his awful hair, sleeveless biceps, and the heart thing. Urgh.

YY why are you so insensitive! Can't you see how hard SSH is trying to emote sadness in that picture? LOL. Actually most of that drama was his character being in angst, so there was quite a bit of THE frown, et cetera.

Actually I think Summer Scent wasn't all that bad. But I think I'm biased because it had Son Yejin therefore I was willing to give it a break. LOL. Wasn't SSH's character like an architect or something in Summer Scent? Usually architects have good fashion (I kid not, all the architect majors at school dress amazing)... Yeah.

He definitely has head-tilted from the very beginning. A little endearing, actually. But not really when I see it in action and want to throw something at the screen for laughing in a serious scene.

Autumn Tale was my first ever Kdrama! And the first and last drama that made me cry my ass off!!!! Granted I was 8yrs old and Eun-suh just found out that the family she thought was hers, wasn't actually hers. Lol! Since then, yes I have cried watching one other drama, but nothing as bad as when I cried for Autumn Tale.

Yeah I know this PD will def
1) Jung Dong Hwan - Winter - Sang Hyuk/JoonSang Father
Autumn - Joon Suh Father, Summer - Ryu Jin Farther , Spring - Jae Ha Farther)

2) Kim Hae Sook (Winter - YuJin's Mother, Autumn - Eun Suh mother, Spring - Eun Young Auntie)

hope the cast will be rookies/young talent like Kim Soo Hyun , Park Bo Young, Yoo In Ah, Moon Gun Young, Kim Bum, Park Shin Hye, Jang Guen Sook or even TOP (Big Bang)

"If there’s one man to blame for the ensuing lifelong addiction, the lengths of which you’ve all witnessed, it’s PD Yoon."

OMG yes, I...err, you nailed it there! Winter Sonata was my first K-drama eveeer. Oh that fateful day. Why did BYJ have to be so pretty? LOL. It's crazy to think I was so crazy about it, but I guess I'd never seen anything like it and I cried more than I ever did watching any drama. (I think I'm desensitized to all the tragedy and general crying that ensues in K-dramas now that I forget it's supposed to be sad...unless it really is...or if it's unusually touching.) Since then, I've migrated to rom-coms, but I wouldn't mind going back if it was able to hold my interest. And if they don't rehash all that amnesia/cancer/pure evil mother,girlfriend,whatever/I-can't-be-with-you-because-insert ridiculous nonsensical, only used for more drama, reason here-business, then I'm game.

Out of the four the only one I've watched is Winter Sonata. Remember liking it. Granted, I was around eleven. I also remember the crying.

I'm thinking I might watch another one, but I don't really want to sit through SSH's super intense emoting xD No offense, he's hawt and everything (I watched MP!) but oyy. I think I'll try Spring Waltz, sounds the breeziest out of the three remaining. Plus I kinda have a soft spot for Han Hyo-joo ever since Brilliant Legacy...heh

Spring Waltz's ok, but the guy is pretty wooden. Plus he had an eye infection towards the end of the filming, I think, so he had a black clot on the white of one of his eyes....very distracting and disturbing....my eyes kept getting drawn to it during the close up emo scenes.....*cringing at bad memory*

SHUDDER. I REMEMBER THAT.

I actually had major problems with Spring Waltz because I didn't get Seo Doyoung's acting. Like it was super wooden. His face didn't even attempt to emote. There wasn't even head tilting, major facial contractions to entertain me. Actually, I felt Spring Waltz was a little too peaceful for me. Like watching a still water pond. Or maybe by this time I already had gotten over the "melo" phase in my life. Eh. Though I had to watch a few episodes because I was subbing the drama at the time..

Seo DoYoung eyes was actually infected due to the punch Daniel Henney accidently gave him in one scene. he was HIT hard and his eyes was swollen and I remembered they had to stop shooting for a while but he still insist on continuing the drama. Daniel was really sorry about the incident, and while SDH acting maybe was a little bit wooden, but becoz of his determination to finish the shoot despite the eye pain made me forget his flaw.

Actually just re-watch the series last 2 weeks hahaha. the children scenes was soo beautiful - Eun Young ah! and the OST WOW! i missed Loveholic as a group.

I think this is the only drama has a happy ending, while Winter & Summer is more like an open ending and don't get me started with Autumn

i thought i was the only one who stared in SDY's eye but now that i now what happened i like him more. i don't think he was wooden, actually he had to be some sort of emo guy because of his past and i think he nailed it: the happy scenes he had previous the discovery of EY's real identity were good.

First love is Winter Sonata at that time. Autumn thing, didn't understand the craze till now. But after watching all seasons, Spring Waltz is my fav in term of AUSTRIA hehe and it was the only one with a wedding scene in the end.

Darn, your life long fav Jung Jae, after the Housemaid, couldn't imagine him with clothes on. LOL. And what a weird movie it was.

Don't worry girlfriday, we're growing old together kekeke... I once told my friends that maybe after my fav actors/actresses have grown old, I might stop watching kdrama, cos, to date I'm yet convinced with the pop idols in kdrama... cos I'm getting older... hehehe

I can't remember which was the first kdrama I watched but most probably Beautiful Days... then WS. But now e-time I think of WS, I'm bummed at how or why I ever like that drama... I'm not fond of CJW character at all. But I love her in Stairway in Heaven. And teary drama of my pick would be Stairway to Heaven cos I've watched it three times without going crazy and the ost helps convey the message and emotions really well.

I will first see who the casts then decide if I'm gonna for it or drop it.

WHOA...It's been so long since I last heard bout the season dramas. :)

I admit, I was against Winter Sonata back then when everyone was crooning over Bae Yong Joon (ack.) and the OST that every piano player was yearning to learn how to play.

Then comes Autumn Tale (they showed Winter Sonata first back in my country) and it must be Won Bin and Song Seung Hoon's good looks cause that was what spurred me on hungrily for Korean dramas and OSTs, even if I gack hearing the piano playing "Reason" now. Hahaha. How times change.

But Autumn Tale was the start where I got pretty hooked on seeing guys in suits, even in oddly dyed hair. Won Bin..... yup.

I've seen SJK cried like a little boy (My Precious You) and still looked gorgeous. LOL. I'm okay with Kim Soo Hyun, but he has played the lead in DH, please please for Yoo Ah In, next Hallyu top star. OH MAN. I would watch it in a heartbeat.

Goodness, I can't believe I watched all of the above except for Feelings. I remembered crying buckets of tears (with my mom and friends) watching the first few episodes of Autumn and having a fangirl crush then on Bae Yong Jun. Sigh, and younger Won Bin was super cute walking around with his emo hair and dog. I laughed when the weird background music came on during his scenes.
Sigh, don't know whether I can stand going through all the angst that this PD likes to torture his viewers with though...

I really hope that Bae Young Jun will contact PD Yoon and ask him to cast Kim Soo Hyun. That would be so much awesomeness. maybe BYJ can do a cameo, or be the brother who died and left KSH in a world angst until the heroin light up his whole life with just a simple smile or with brezee of her hair brushing KSH face. (i.e - refer scene CJW riding buss with BYJ)

If not Ji Hwan, i'm okay with Kim Soo Hyun...I have to say that watching him in DH makes me think that he acts, cries and even run like KJH...or, maybe it is just me missing Ji Hwan too much...hmmm...

I'm torn.

I do love the wistfulness and nostalgia his stories have, and his OTP's chemistry is always the draw. Man, does he know how to pick beautiful actors!

My biggest problem with the Seasons was they
s------t-------r-------e------t-----c------h-------e-------d
over way too many episodes with NOTHING CHANGING toward the end.

These story lines make me ANGRY like HULK! Because the poor second lead actors have to suffer repeating the same threats to the OTP to reveal the secret! or stop you from leaving me!

I think times have changed, too, as far as character's willingness to supress their true feelings, and follow what their (sometimes) dead (grand) parent's wishes against their own.

Let us hope he keeps are the gorgeousness and the music from his dramas, and moves faster with the times as far as plotting.

I must be the only one who isn't into his season dramas that much. I didn't know that PD Yoon directed 'Propose'! That was one of my favorites from the 90's (i guess i'm old too).XD But it definitely was different from his season dramas. For me, the cast will probably be the deciding factor.

"Propose" (or at least its tail end) was the first Korean drama for me. Most of my friends actually don't know about it. :) I remember Won Bin had a small part in it. I love "Propose," although I really haven't watched it in full.

My first full drama, though, is "Autumn in My Heart."

I didn't ever know they share the same PD.

Noooo! he's coming back to dramaland???? i have to admit i've watched the season dramas.
not long ago i finished with Spring Waltz and i like it more then the other three. why? because it had no amnesia, cancer, incest, etc. etc.
though i think some story lines were pure fillers forced to the viewers (like the relationship between Min young and Sang Woo, and Phillip's mom story line), the pace of the story slowed down between episodes 14 to 19 and episode 20 seemed rushed because they have to wrapped up everything i liked the happy ending. Han Hyo-joo and Suh Do-young were cute together and i want to have the same lovey-dovey moments JH and EY they had together when they were kids and before he knew who she was. Also SDY is H.O.T! and he made me want to cry with him every time he did it on screen.
i'm currently watching Summer Scent (which is been broadcast in my country; i watched SW on Tudou.com) and i'm starting to get frustrated and tired. all the weeping over the heart transplant... also, Jung jae and Jung ga, can't be more pathetic? can't they just quit their one-sided love? they don't love you! get over them already! move on! it's enough!
winter and autumn were too much for me; winter didn't impress me, maybe because it's a cult drama i expected more. and autumn... i just skipped to the end which i think was awful and too tragic.
which cliche element would he use in his new drama? chaebols? geniuses? music & art's schools? doctors? lawyers? marriage contracts? because death and diseases are so last season...
