Posters and stills for weekend drama All That Glitters
by javabeans
All That Glitters premieres today on MBC, taking up the slot formerly occupied by Gloria, and here are a few more stills and official posters for the drama.
Despite being a 50-episode weekend drama, All That Glitters is on my tentative watch list for one reason, and one reason only: director Noh Do-chul, who showed a stylish visual flair and a sharp ear for music in the witty Soulmate and the fresh comedy Hello Franceska. I’m not pinning my hopes on this being another Soulmate, but I do have hopes that he’ll be able to do something zippy and engaging with what sounds like a fairly standard premise.
(I do like lead actress Kim Hyun-joo as well, but she alone isn’t enough to get me to watch a drama that doesn’t otherwise interest me. Case in point: Partner. Another plus is writer Bae Yoo-mi, who penned two enjoyable rom-coms, Who Are You? and Really Really Like You.)
The drama centers around Kim’s workaholic character, the daughter to a publishing chaebol who is determined to succeed on her own merits rather than depending on her family wealth. Her life is suddenly overturned when she her situation is reversed with the daughter of a poor family, making All That Glitters a female version of the ol’ Prince and the Pauper storyline, told as a “bright and cheerful success story.”
That other woman is played by Lee Yuri, whose character fills the role the femme fatale villainess. Kim Seok-hoon (Iron Empress) is cast as the prickly leading man and an editor-in-chief, with supporting cast including musical actor Kang Dong-ho, veterans Go Du-shim, Park Jung-soo, and Gil Yong-woo, and Micky Yoochun’s younger brother Park Yoo-hwan in his acting debut.
The drama airs its first episode today, February 12.

Maybe I will watch this one. Sounds nice, to bad the guy isn't hot. He looks akward and stiff.
Call me superficial but the guy needs to be hot, or have some sort of charisma. The girls I don't mind as long as they don't annoy me, which happens allot.

Hopefully he has some charisma onscreen.

Oh Kim Suk-hoon is a hottie. That picture is doing him no justice. Although he's more of a 90s icon and I fear he might have lost some of his spark.
Plus, he's played WAY too many roles like this in many MBC weekend dramas. So I'm doubting he'll be too spectacular. But I can't miss him being paired with Kim Hyun-joo! <3 <3 <3
Also: Jung Tae-woo! (Of Comrades!)
Like javabeans I'm also fond of the director, I loved Soulmate, too. xD

Aw, that's terrible, hearing of his accident.
I watched quite a few of his series like Tomato, Ballad of Han River, Into the Storm and more. He used to kind of reminded me a lot of a handful of HK actors back then. He definitely had a smoulder.
Anyway, anyone remember this MV? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4j3HTZijWM
He's such a hottie in it!
And anyone who recognises Myung Se-bin, she was so different in it from her usual nerd roles in dramas.

she looks pretty
but
the stills contrast with what i loved so much about EunChan in CP or pretty much the whole female cast of WomanWhoStillWantsToMarry
when they "dressed down" they seemed wholly unconcerned with maintaining a pristine image
might still watch this tho

Hopefully it'll be good given the writer's previous work...also Micky's brother is in it, so I will definitely keep an eye out for this one.

Why do all family dramas have the same kind of posters? I swear, they could start recycling them and I'd have no idea.
I find the writer/director pair intriguing, but the plot is just so..meh. But maybe it'll be better in execution, I dunno. I'll give it a shot when it airs.
It seems the dramas I'm watching are getting longer and longer these days.. ><

The plot doesn't sound overly intriguing for my tastes, but I'll be curious to see how Park Yoohwan does in his first acting role

I'll give a 15 minute try. After watching a few dramas with such eye candies, I'm spoiled and so if a show has no charismatic/handsome leads, it's hard to go on.

It's interesting how I'm dedicated to watching American shows through their 100+ episode runs, but any Korean Drama longer than 20 episodes makes me dubious.
It's like they've spoiled me with the quick plot. I wait twenty episodes in an American show for two characters to show any interest in each other, but you know it's gonna happen in episode 5 of a Korean drama.

LOL, I know!
I've always wondered why everyone always goes, "50 EPISODES!?" when not only do American television series air daily, they have several seasons.
But I guess in kdrama land, our patience is limited. I suppose it's because we have a clearer view of how long a drama is, and therefore we want certain things to happen already or else it feels like it's dragging.

I think you've just explained my entire kdrama-psyche to me. I was wondering why I balk at anything over 20 episodes.

IDK. Lately I haven't been into dramas when I think about the evil second-leads and such... it drains all the energy out of me that I don't find it entertaining at all.
I want a drama where no one is "evil" or has ulterior motives... unless realistic, flawed beings I can truly sympathize with.
I'll watch til a few more episodes come out and wait to hear everyone's opinion.

The villain as a plot device - I get it, I do, but that doesn't mean I always like it.
One of the reasons I enjoyed Snow Queen as much as I did is that there isn't a villain. There's no evil domineering ex-girlfriend or mother. There's no Grandfather working his malicious/misguided machinations.
Speaking of villains. One of the absolute funniest (and most obvious uses of) "villain as a plot device" is Don John from Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." At least in K-dramas there's usually an attempt to humanize/redeem/explain the villains.

Smile, You was probably the closest drama over 25 episodes that ever got recapped here. ATG probably won't get a recap.
