Park Min-young up for City Hunter?

This…is an interesting choice, if it comes to pass: Park Min-young, last seen cross-dressing in period costume for Sungkyunkwan Scandal, is being reported as a top contender for City Hunter, starring Lee Min-ho.
According to Park’s agency rep, she is in the final negotiation stages with the producers, as well as discussions of character development with recently added scriptwriter Hwang Eun-kyung. The rep stated that the producers are also looking favorably at Park’s casting, although this is from the mouths of her rep, so take that with a grain of salt.
Park is up for the Kaori role, who is Ryo’s partner at the PI office and eventual love interest, although Ryo starts out ogling every pretty woman who passes. He’s not exactly picky. I’m a bit surprised/nonplussed at this casting, because it just doesn’t seem to fit the original characters, although I suppose with Lee Min-ho in the lead, they’re probably tweaking the whole thing younger. (Lee’s probably a decade too young for a proper Ryo — by which I mean one faithful to the original character — which isn’t a criticism of him, but an observation of the discrepancy.)
I don’t doubt he’ll do a great job interpreting the character, but Park seems too…feminine for Kaori. I know that’s odd since she just played a girl who dresses as a dude, but if memory serves me correctly, I recall Kaori being tough, almost butch. (City Hunter fans, am I remembering correctly?) I’d have loved to see a Kim Sun-ah type in the role (though she’s probably too old for him), or a Shim Eun-kyung in about eight years.
If Park is cast, she’ll join the shoots when they begin in March. City Hunter will premiere in May.

Please no! Aside from her not fitting the role, I'm not impressed with her acting. In Sungkyunkwan, she just cried (specifically, let-tears-fall-then-wipe-them-away) in all of the sad/angsty scenes. It was too much for me. It's like SSH's patented head tilt.

Wrong! Kaori is a beautiful and very feminine character BUT is forced into tough and rough asskicking because of her lecherous partner. The best part of the manga is the dynamic between both of them. Ryo picks on Kaori and then Kaori beats him up!

then Yoon Eun Hye may be a more suitable choice for the role considering her portrayal of Eun Chan in Coffee Prince... too bad Ha Ji Won is too old to be paired with Min Ho

I agree with you.. Eun Hye will be much better..
I love Min Young but I think she's too weak for Min Ho.. he's charisma and presence is too strong.. his partner should atleast be at par.. Min young is sweet, IMO.. I can't picture her to be a toughie.. not now..

@ AhjumaInJava: Totally agree with you... Either YEH or HJW would be a much better choice than PMY, seriously! I'm actually leaning even more on Ha Ji-Won with her current short hair and stellar performance in Secret Garden (especially when she's doing those fight scenes at the movie sets). That's almost a replica of Kaori in City Hunter!
I was a fanatic fan of the manwa 'City Hunter' when I was kid and I really can attest to it. I think HJW can pull it off without any issues with LMH despite the age difference. I think LMH looks older for his age and HJW looks so much younger than 31.

Who knows. PMY might just be the Kaori that we love. Remember everyone, almost everyone, went tsked cuz Shin Min ah was too old, compared to Seung Ki, in her fox role, but she turned out be more than wonderful and compatible.
I will just tune in for the fun of it and see how it will go from there

wow..tsked cuz min ah was too old? i thought she's 84-er and seunggi is 86-er..not that old..hyunbin is 82-er and hjw is 79-er.. or eugene and tak gu..it was too old too,,hehe
but agree with you..who knows..good luck for them..cuz sometimes when a drama too much get publicity they'll be not that successful but again&again who knows..so good luck!

Based on that pic, I'd imagine the heroine/love interest as a tough-as-nails kind of chick. A broad. With a heart of gold. But no cutesy. None whatsoever. That chick would rather chew and spit out nails than let the tip of her pinky do cutesy.

I agree with you JB...While I love LMH, and PMY, I must say that as a fan of the anime (and later, manga), I'm not that excited with this cast.
Well, I better say that AFTER I see the result, but taken as it is, it's a big "Errrrrr" for me.
What I loved with Ryo was precisely because he is an adult who can be very childish.
And Kaori was extremely funny because even though she looks like a woman, her personality is really that of a tomboy....
well, I better not be too negative (because I know it will spoil my excitement over the project) and we shall better wait and see..

I also have this big "Errrrr...really?" in my head after reading the cast.
I adore Ryu-Kaori dynamic.. as his (late) partner's sister, he restrained himself from lus..loving Kaori. And as a newbie in the world of bountyhunting, Kaori tries to toughen up her already tomboy self to masked her soft heart (that has a special soft part for her partner).
PMY as Kaori seems off. I watched her in I am Ssam and SKKS. I think she could portray Kaori's strong willed and gentle heart, but not that tough tomboy persona. Her portrayal as a tomboy wasn't convincing to me. and I agree to all above that she is too feminine. in SKKS I always see her as a girly girl playing dress up, not a girl in a secret disguise (and a secret mission).
well, we'll see how the writters going to portray our beloved characters.. and as a person who practically raised reading City Hunter Comics, I'll lower my expectations (more)..

haha, yeah indeed, if you grew up with City Hunter Comics, I believe you better not expect too much (or else, you may feel the pain of disappointment)
I enjoyed a lot SKKS (well, if I let aside the last episode..Booo), but as you said, PMY was not very convincing. But, while in You're Beautiful I couldn't stand how Mi-N(yu)am was SO.NOT.A.BOY, in SKKS I let it slide mostly because of soong joong ki. I mean, this boy is even more good looking than a girl !
Then, if we consider PMY alone, well....."errrrrrr".
But, once again, I prefer not judge her too early on that project.
As someone pointed out above, some other actresses were criticized on their cast even before the release of their drama, and once it was broadcasted the very same persons praised them...
on a side note, who else wish that on the (future) stills, our new Kaori will have her favorite bazooka, or her 100 tons hammer ? :D

Heo Yi Jae would make a perfect "korean Kaori", as for Ryo, I'm disapointed that Jung Woo Sung who was first to take that role didn't keep it.
Don't like this cast, they were too young to be believable :/

You should watch Cinderella unni/sister she won a award of top excelence actress last year because of her Role^^~
She can really act tough :D if is what this role ask... she played a tough-stubborn (really stubborn) girl at CU...But is a melodrama, don't know if you will like it so much, and since I'm her fan, I'm little suspect to say this, but I loved her as Eun Jo :D, some people actually lost some hair from pulling it out of the head because was frustated with her (javabens, and a lot of more people LOL)

Yes that is right, she won the daesang, and also was the first one to win a award for a couple of the same sex (she and Chae won won the couple award :D)
I have been checking her dramas since autumn in my heart (aka autumn tale) she did the role of the main girl when she was kid, since then I was amazed by her acting, I watched her movies, little bride that was fun and cute, Innocent steps and Love me not (she was amazing in this one)
One thing I noticed is that she always got pared up with older actors.. just in Marry me, Mary she was with someone at her age :D but even though they were all older they always had chemistry with her... that is good acting :D

MGY doesn't need it and is beautiful in her own way without plastic and all. Oh but of course, you being biased by SKKS is common... how old are you 13? because this type of comment is from a kid. Probably.
BTW MGY can pull off chemistry with every actor she acts, why LMH would be different?

I enjoyed the painter of the wind, but Moon Geun Young was very obviously female to me from beginning to end. I didn't actually know MGY then or that her character was disguised as a male since my friend gave me a link to watch on youtube. I didn't find her at all as a charismatic boy or etc, she just a cute girl. And not to be ruuuude to a lot of these people calling for YEH... but Please no... I know people think shes handsome or whatever, but she's not, she wasn't at all attractive in Coffee Prince as a guy no matter how much I enjoyed that drama. She looks best with makeup and feminine hair + clothes that emphasize her long body, she isn't really that great at playing tough either. The girl can rock a photoshoot but she still lacks a lot in acting. They need a strong personality for this role, I pray they find it so its a ratings success and it is not just something getting loads of attention due to Minhos fandom. ;o;

I agree with all the comments here. She's too feminine and I feel that she's still lacking in some part of her acting. She's not a badass type, I wonder if she can be tough and can be a kickass woman in this drama. So personally I oppose her to become Kaori. I wonder why Korea loves her that much? That must be something.. But I'll still be looking forward to ot though..

Yes Lee Yo-won could pull it with her Deokman-esque, she did girl dressed as guy better & tougher than Park min-young in SKKS. But she have 49 Days with Lee Min-ho best mate Jung Il-woo, too be airing right before City Hunter, so i dont think so.

Personally, I would have been over the moon for a Lee Min Ho / Ha Ji Won pairing, though the age gap would have been there. HJW can do a bang-up job of the pretty tomboy; I'm also thinking Kim So Yeon in her younger, pre-Ma Hye Ri years (and if she gained about 10 lbs of muscle. She's beautiful, but frail)

hmmm i loved skks, and park minyoung did well there(although, she wasn't awesome and she didn't exactly inspire me to care about the character, but her acting was pretty solid except when she was being obviously girly while pretending to be a man, but i blame that on the director and the writers) she's too pretty for this character. the character casting was described as attractive, probably meaning a charismatic actress, more sexy and fierce (industry standards would not allow anything less than good-looking). i oppose park minyoung being kaori.

I like Lee Min Ho and hope that he works extremely hard at being the character actor that he could become.
In SKKS, I liked the character Yoon Hee, but it had nothing to do with Park Min Young's acting portrayal of the character in anyway. Unlike Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In's acting portrayal of their characters Yong Ha and Jae Shin, I loved their characters because of them.

I think so too! Remember Personal Taste where YEH came on as cameo, ex of LMH. That moment the screen just sizzled for a few min.
I might be exaggerating but I was totally put off by SYJ character when they said she didn't bath everyday! From then onwards, I just couldn't think of her as cute, pretty or attractive!

As a City Hunter die hard fan I'm not finding this choice too off target, kaori is an extremely sensitive person hidden behind a wall of toughness made of bread crumbs XD I think it's easier for a performer to properly portray toughness they don't really have, rather than vulnerability they don't feel or at least seem to exhude.
I'm nervous about the outcome of this series because sadly I have great hopes for it (If the poster shots are any indication, it's gonna be good, but then again photos are a far cry from action...)

@ Lena: I'm afraid those so-called 'City Hunter' posters you've seen posted around are all fan made only using previous pictures of LMH in other acts and then CGI them to compose different ones. They are very well done though.
Regardless, I'm nervous about it too as I do have high hopes in City Hunter. I guess we'd have to lower our expectation so as not to get shocked then especially if this female lead did go to PMY. (Sigh!)

Park Min Young?? It's not bad, of course, I had watched her in that drama "SKKS" but she's NOT really, like, strong unlike Moon Geun Young and Ha Ji Won, yups.

I admired her alot when she and Kim Nam Gil act so funny in small part of Bad Guy scene, lolz.
Anyway, I think Shim Eun Kyung is matching her tomboyish personality like that.

I'm actually okay with this. Though her character in High Kick was known for being pretty, she was also a bit of a delinquent, with a hard edge to her - just watch the episode when she and Kim Bum were supposed to fight, and he ran off afraid to face her, lol.
So yes, I believe she can do it. I'm looking forward to it in fact!

so sad I liked park shin hye(168cm) for female lead they were so good in etude house CF...and I think park shin hye is enough tall and has feminine and tomboy charm both....anyway city hunter fighting!!!!!!!

I do not understand how they take so long to cast and yet end up with PMY. There are so many actresses with more experience and better acting skills. I guess they might be making Kaori into a cute pretty character. Furthermore with LMH acting levels, it will show up PMY ,just like in SKKS the boys outacted her. I guess with LMH and the PD,it will be ok. Saw Daemul earlier episodes, not a fan of the writer. I really , really want it to be great like SG with strong leads....

I'll vote for Moon Geun Young. I think she can play Kaori perfectly. Just compare all her role that she played, from Cinderella Sister, to Mary Stay All Night, and Painter of the Wind. If anyone can pull it off, it's Moon Geun Young, plus she's just the right age group with Lee Min Ho.
Yes, and Kim Sun-ah will make a good Kaori. I love to see her on screen again... where is she? Park-min Young is definitely too girly.

This is totally out of the blue, but what about Lee Seul's lady in waiting from MP, Son Sung Yoon? She has a 1984 birthday.
For such a small role, she takes up a lot of attention when she is on screen.
She def could play a sexy girl Friday.

Lee Min Ho: June 22, 1987
Park Min Young: March 4, 1986
Moon Geun Young: May 6, 1987
Does a little over 12 months put Park in a different age group with Lee?
I haven't read manga, think Lee was cute in BOF, so-so in Personal Taste, Park was good in SKK. These two exude smart & edginess. Looking forward to the pairing, if Park gets cast.

Well, I didn't really meant Park-min Young is not within the same age of Lee Min Ho, I'm just pointing out that MGY is, cause I was comparing her with other older actresses that fit with the role, but are a lot older than LMH.
I watch SKK and Park-min Young doesn't seem like she can pull off Kaori.

Wow. This is quite possibly the most inane choice ever. I put up with PMY in SKKS mainly because she managed to stay on the just acceptable side of cutesy and because I just adored everyone else in that drama. (I developed an aggressive distaste for PMY through SKKS.) If this goes through, unless I hear rave reviews after it begins airing, I doubt I'll be watching City Hunter, no matter how awesome I think LMH is.

Yup, your right. Kaori is even mistaken for a ikemen which basically is a attractive guy.
Park Min Young is such a wrong move, I can understand Lee Min Ho even thougn he is 10 years to young for Ryo.
Sure she crossdressed in her latest drama but still she was so feminine looking.

sexy, and very VERY feminine. physically feminine in the bosom and mini-skirt, also feminine in manner - her pose, the way she ties her shirt and her hair, the way she looks down on readers.

People, I'm sorry but you all are getting wrong the post, I mean the factor here isn't to act like a boy or if she looks good as a boy, is being a little tomboy, you all are listing actress that acted well as a boy but they (the most) were too cute for be one and in any way were Sexy.
Kaori has to be sexy, got it?
I don't think Yeh would be a nice pick (she plays well a boy in CP but that is not what this drama is looking for)
Also PSH she has a girly face... don't match Kaori character
I should say Moon Geun Young, Kim So Yeon (a pity she is too older) and actress like Shin Mi ah, would be a nice pick!
