EPISODE 9 RECAP
We see that in the 200 days, Hye-mi has been spurred on to dig her heels in and really make an effort to catch up to Baek-hee. We see her and Sam-dong practicing for their latest midterm, which was what we witnessed at the end of the last episode. (And how cute is it to watch Sam-dong dance?)
Oh-hyuk gives the Misfits their midterm scores proudly, but their faces fall when they hear that they’re not high enough to get them out of the university prep class. Their spirits sag at the thought of spending their sophomore year in here too.
But Oh-hyuk has a plan. There’s a dance competition coming up, and if they can enter and win, they’ll earn enough points to get out of Misfitland. But! We love Misfitland!
They balk at being able to win a national dance competition, but Oh-hyuk tells them not to worry; they have a secret weapon. Cut to “Dance God” Yang Jin-man, doing a dance…that I can’t even…with an outfit…that’s just…pwahahaha. I love this guy.
Hye-mi loses a round of rock-paper-scissors (which she suggested, heh) and heads to the arena where she registers the Misfits for the competition. She runs into Baek-hee, who coolly acknowledges that she saw Hye-mi’s midterm dance and that she’s improved.
Now it’s Hye-mi’s turn to thank her frenemy, for being good motivation for her to succeed. She dangles the K pendant in Baek-hee’s face, saying that she was right; it really does have some luck.
Baek-hee confirms that she’s entering the competition too, (In truth, it’d be no fun without you, Baek-hee.) and wonders who will win. Hye-mi: “What does it matter who wins, as long as we try out best…is what I can’t bring myself to say.” HA! She even has the accompanying facial expressions to fake her out.
Hye-mi declares that she’ll win this competition and her way out of the university prep class, and Baek-hee just says we’ll wait and see. But as Hye-mi turns to walk away, she can’t help but get this last dig in: that she’s here to sign up Shi-hyuk (Jin-gook), and Hye-mi pauses at the mention of his name.
Pil-sook looks intently at the poster for the dance competition at school, and tries out a few dance poses, thinking that she’s alone. But Chipmunk walks up right behind her, and starts mimicking her moves. Oh my god, I love the idea that he might become HER secret admirer now. So. Good.
She gets into the dancing and twirls around, only to come face to face with Jason, and fall back in shock. He lurches forward to grab her and keep her from falling, leading to much awkwardness and avoidance of eye contact. It’s adorable.
He asks if she’s entering the competition, and he says he is too, since that’s what Principal Shi required of everyone in K, in order to make up for all their absences. She asks if he came here to say something to her, and he says no…but does she maybe have something to say to him? Eee! Are you fishing for her to re-ask you if you like her?
And by the way, I’m totally in the he-liked-her-before-she-was-skinny camp. Because he looked for her before he knew she looked like this. And because he has to, in order for me to keep rooting for them. Drama, please don’t change my mind about this. Don’t do it.
She says no, and then when Ria walks up, she excuses herself shyly and walks away. Jason can’t hide his disappointment at what she didn’t ask him. Ria wonders who that is, and he tells her it’s Pil-sook, the girl she said would never debut unless she lost 30kg. Ria just scoffs that looks aren’t enough for someone to debut, and Chipmunk counters, “Well, you can’t sing, but you debuted.” LOL.
On her way home with Sam-dong, Hye-mi gets a call that Jin-gook has returned home, and gets a request to bring home cake. Sam-dong volunteers to run and get one, and even write “Welcome home” on it, and sends Hye-mi home ahead of him.
At home, Jin-gook presents the family with gifts, and gets a squeal from Noona over a handbag, and a kiss on the cheek from Hye-mi’s little sister (which hilariously prompts a yelling session from a very jealous Noona). He waits for Hye-mi with a gift in his hand.
But when Hye-mi arrives in front of the house, she’s greeted by a group of fangirls (with posters that say: “Jin-gook Over Flowers.” Ha. They refuse to let her pass because they assume she’s just a crazy fangirl, and she’s quick to tell them that they’re the crazy ones, and besides, she’s not even his fan. They gang up on her and start with the hair pulling, until Sam-dong breaks it up to save her.
Jin-gook rushes out to ask if she’s okay, but Sam-dong blocks him from getting any closer to Hye-mi, and tells him it’s best if he leaves. Jin-gook watches sadly as Sam-dong takes her inside, and sees the welcome home cake splattered on the ground.
Hye-mi goes inside and sees the present from Jin-gook on her desk, and puts it away sadly.
Later Jin-gook returns to their old studio, and finds Sam-dong there, practicing till late. He asks if Hye-mi’s around, and thanks Sam-dong for saving her the other night. Sam-dong gets up in Jin-gook’s face, and says with dramatic tension, “I don’t think that’s something you should be thanking me for.” (As in: you are not her keeper, so don’t pretend I saved your girl.)
Oooooh. I miss the days when you were wearing each other’s underwear (I was really hoping there was a gift box for Sam-dong with a pair of boxer briefs.) but I do enjoy that there’s a new rivalry in town.
Sam-dong reminds him that he asked if he liked Hye-mi and he said he didn’t. Sam-dong: “If I ask you again now, will your answer be the same?” Jin-gook: “No.” Aw, yeah.
Sam-dong gives it to him straight: He likes Hye-mi, and he’s never going to give her up. Gah, I freaking love your bleeding heart high school boy adoration. It’s totally unrealistic, but that’s what high school love is like.
It’s time for Dance of the Year, as the contestants gather for team-picking and such. Presiding over the events is the judge, a cameo by Koo Jun-yup (DJ Koo of Clon). The team captains are picked at random, but of course Hye-mi and Baek-hee get chosen.
Hye-mi has first pick at her team, and both Sam-dong and Jin-gook stare nervously as she looks between them…and then picks Jason. Hahaha. Hey, first pick means you get first shot at the best dancer, and I love that Hye-mi’s like, screw boys, imma win.
Baek-hee picks Jin-gook, and Hye-mi chooses the rest of the Misfits to round out her foursome. Next comes the performance order and theme, which is strangely enough, an animal. Hye-mi’s team gets Bird, while Baek-hee’s team gets Snake. Even the kids note that it’s an interesting coincidence, as birds and snakes have very obvious connotations in folklore as signs of good and evil, respectively.
Easy-going Jason is happy to join the team, and even gets a welcome high-five from Sam-dong. Yay, I much prefer Chipmunk as a Misfit. Jin-gook looks on wistfully, but gets a stare-down from Sam-dong and Baek-hee wonders if she did the wrong thing, picking Jin-gook when he wanted to be on Hye-mi’s team. He says she did the right thing, and that they have to win.
The Misfits head to the studio to practice, and as they explain their studio space to Jason, he says that he knows—he’s been there before. Pil-sook turns around to ask when, and he sheepishly confesses to following her that day they went to the noraebang, because he was “bored.” Bored, my ass.
Sam-dong teases them for appearing to have a deeper history than they let on, but both PIl-sook and Jason deny it. They reach the studio, but find that the entrance has been blocked. They call Oh-hyuk with the news that the landlord sold the place. (I thought it was abandoned…so who was paying rent on it this whole time?)
Oh-hyuk is in the middle of making a payment to debt collector Man Doo-shik, who hears the news and offers up his nightclub (before hours) for the kids to practice in. He even offers it at no charge, prompting Oh-hyuk’s fluttering eyelashes of gratitude. Doo-shik jumps back, yelling at him not to make that face anymore. Why, are you afraid of being the Terius to his Candy again? Keh.
They get to practice, as Jin-man plays videos of birds for them to watch. Jason doubts Jin-man’s skills as a dancer and choreographer, prompting an almost-dance-off (which would have been awesome) but sadly, Jin-man backs down. Heh.
At practice, he tells them to think of the birds and move like them. Jason pecks like a chicken, Pil-sook flutters, Sam-dong clucks, and Hye-mi….isn’t even a bird, as she does a classical Korean folk dance. Ha. Jin-man bursts their bird-bubbles, and shows them how to flap their wings, as he choreographs their number, featuring a solo for Chipmunk. Can a chipmunk play a bird?
In the coming days, Sam-dong learns Jason’s moves, and Hye-mi catches him in the studio, practicing Jason’s solo. He asks if it’s so crazy that he could maybe learn it better than Jason and scoop the solo out from under him…and Hye-mi answers truthfully that it IS that crazy. Sam-dong knows it but he doesn’t care. He gets close to her, and says that he’s not going to give up…on anything. Rawr?
But of course, things are never that easy for the Misfits, as they run into another snag. The cops find issue with their presence in a nightclub, and they get hauled off to the police station for questioning. Doo-shik gets punished, while the kids get to leave with their teacher…and in walks Principal Shi. Uh-oh.
Principal Shi brings Oh-hyuk in to ask not about the practice space, but about the man he saw at the police station, remembering him as the talent agent who borrowed the school’s auditorium the day of the showcase. We don’t see how Oh-hyuk talks himself out of it, but he tells the kids that they’re okay to compete. They wonder where they’ll practice now…
They stand awkwardly in the middle of a jjimjilbang (24-hour sauna) as Jin-man wonders if this is really what it’s come down to. Oh-hyuk tells them that it’ll be fine, and they practice, with Sam-dong filling in for Jason’s solo.
Cue dance montage, as both teams practice. Aw, yeah!
We go straight into the competition, as Team Snake does indeed writhe around like a snake, dressed in all black, in case we forget who the bad guys are. Team Bird is dressed in all white, of course, and I’m lamenting the fact that we didn’t get to see Sam-dong during his makeup session where he got sprayed with all that manly glitter.
Backstage, Jin-man tells Jason that they changed a part of the routine, and tries to teach him the steps. Oh-hyuk steps in to say that since Sam-dong’s been to ALL the rehearsals, he should do the solo. Chipmunk and his giant ego argue that he doesn’t even need to learn new steps; he can just freestyle it.
Oh-hyuk asks Sam-dong if he can do it, and he hesitates, so Oh-hyuk tells him that the longer he thinks, the less courage he’ll have. He says he’s up to the challenge. Jin-man and Jason protest, but Hye-mi backs Sam-dong. Put to a democratic vote, Pil-sook is the final word. Chipmunk smiles, thinking he’s got it in the bag…as Pil-sook votes for Sam-dong. Burrrrrn.
In the audience, Jin-man complains to the other teachers about Oh-hyuk’s crazy stunt, and Kyung-jin marvels at Oh-hyuk’s dogged principles. She can see that he’s trying to teach Jason a lesson—that talent does not win over hard work.
Team Bird does their routine to a hip-hop version of Swan Lake, which is weird, but pretty to look at. Essentially, they aren’t better dancers than Team Snake, and Sam-dong does a good job, but in truth his dance skills aren’t the show-stopping kind.
Backstage, Chipmunk tells Pil-sook that if he’d done the solo, they would have gotten first place instead of third. Pil-sook thinks it’s fine if they managed to get out of the university prep class, but then can’t take his complacency anymore.
She tells him that he should have been angry that his solo was taken, but here he is, not a care in the world, and that he never should have abandoned his own showcase for hers. Pil-sook: “You have no desire, no dream, no goal.”
Jason gets defensive that she’s trying to lecture him, and Pil-sook adds the kicker: “It’s because I genuinely feel bad for you.” Ouch.
She apologizes for making him feel bad and starts to walk away. Jason: “I wasn’t going to say anything because I’m embarrassed and it hurts my ego, but…why aren’t you keeping your promise?” Eeee!
Pil-sook: Promise? Oh…the 200-day proposal. You know, it was really hard for me to lose weight. I couldn’t eat or drink what I wanted. I nearly died and came back to life. And then when I thought about it…about doing all that because of you…it felt like a waste. I wonder if I did all that for someone who has no dreams, no goals. So, I gave it up.
God, I love that she’s not just thoughtlessly in love with him anymore, and that maybe he’s why she started her diet, but not the entirety of HER dreams and goals. Yay for Pil-sook.
Chipmunk’s ego is bruised beyond…well, probably worse than he’s ever been bruised, considering he’s the golden boy who just coasts through life. So he lashes out at Pil-sook, who says that she’s saying all this because she’s his fan. He says she’s not a caring fan, but a fan who’s overstepping her bounds. He leaves her, clutching her last yogurt cap, the 200-day marker that she’s still holding onto.
Hye-mi smiles at her third-place trophy, and Baek-hee smugly puts her first-place one right next to it to gloat. But to her utter surprise, Hye-mi congratulates her on winning with genuine praise. Baek-hee literally does a double take, wondering what bizarro world she walked into, and explains that SHE won…while Hye-mi lost…
Hye-mi says she knows, but her goal today was to get out of the university prep class, which she did. She adds that someone once told her that not being able to congratulate a friend on her success is living in a hell of your own making. She says sincerely that she doesn’t want to live in that hell, and tells Baek-hee that she did a really good job. Baek-hee reels, somehow angrier that Hye-mi seems to be above the petty rivalry.
Outside, Sam-dong beams at Hye-mi, having overheard her quote his words to Baek-hee. He adds that he told her so, about not giving up, and getting to do the solo. She admits that he was right, and in his glee, he gives her a kiss on the cheek, and then runs for his life. Ha.
Jin-gook witnesses the kiss, and his face falls. Dude, you’re the one who went away and didn’t call. Don’t be mad at underwear boy for taking his chance. Gah, the sad puppy dog faces on either side of this triangle just kill me.
Kyung-jin finds Baek-hee stewing alone, wondering why she isn’t celebrating her victory with the others. Baek-hee: “I feel like I’ve been using all my strength to play tug-o’-war, only to find that my opponent has dropped the rope and left me.”
Both Baek-hee and Jin-gook spend their victory party brooding over Hye-mi, for very different reasons.
The next morning, the story finally breaks that Jin-gook is the illegitimate son of Chairman Hyun. What the…what was the press doing for the past 200 days? Anyway, everyone, including Hye-mi finds out.
Jin-gook braces himself, as Daddy calls and tells him how they’re going to handle it. The next thing you know, they’re giving a tv interview, and Dad is claiming that the stories are false: he adopted Shi-hyuk when he was ten. Oh, that’s just mean. The worst part is, Jin-gook totally lets himself get bamboozled by Daddy, because that’s how much he wants to be loved.
He says that even if the rumors were true, he would have continued to love and respect his father. Aw. It kills me that you love your fakey fakerson father so much. Out in the hall, he asks if this means he really doesn’t have a father anymore, and walks away. In the car, Dad finds a gift left behind by Jin-gook. That’s right; you’d better feel guilty.
Later Jin-gook comes to find Hye-mi to lean on. He tries to be cute with her, but she’s not having any of that, so he chooses a backhug instead. Melt. He even cries on her shoulder, literally, for good measure. She starts to thaw a little when she realizes that he’s crying, but he says he’s fine and walks off.
By the time she turns around to catch up to him, she finds him with Baek-hee, who’s come to check if he’s okay.
At school the kids lament that they can’t afford to go on the class trip to Japan, where group K will also be shooting their music video, at the same time of course. Japan? I was lucky if I got to go to a few local museums when I was in high school. Yeesh.
Oh-hyuk really wants to send them, but they refuse to let him spend more money on them. He goes to see Doo-shik anyway, who has a better idea than giving him another loan: if the kids will sing at his friend-of-friend’s wedding in Japan, he’ll pay for the expenses. Hm. Something tells me this isn’t going to be an ordinary wedding.
Pil-sook volunteers to find the song, and in the library, she sees Jason listening to a song, and then sneaks a listen once he leaves. It’s Panic’s “기다리다,” or “While Waiting,” posted up above. Another Boys Over Flowers reference?
The song plays as Chipmunk goes to his locker, at first ignoring his daily lollipop taped to the door. But in the end he can’t leave it there, and takes it with him. Aw.
Sam-dong and Hye-mi get ready for the big trip, and hurry Oh-hyuk along. He watches them with a thoughtful smile on his face, as we flashback to his meeting with Principal Shi. We find out that the principal couldn’t mess with Oh-hyuk because of his ironclad contract with President Jung, but threatened to expel the kids instead.
Oh-hyuk made a deal to keep them in school—he’d resign, as long as they got to stay. Principal Shi agreed to terms, and set the class trip as his final deadline.
Back in the present, Hye-mi and Sam-dong egg him on, and he smiles at them wistfully, putting on a brave face. Aw, teacher, don’t go!
COMMENTS
This drama continues to be insanely awesome, and I was ready to say that even before the dancetastic preview intercut with Jin-man’s “Too Legit 2 Quit.” I mean, what is there to even say about that, other than it makes me smile like an idiot?
The love triangles in this drama are so well-matched, that every five seconds I’m rooting for someone new, and basically I just end up in circles, except I’m happy about it the entire time. It’s more like a tilt-a-whirl than a triangle, and I’m throwing my hands up and going “wheeee!”
I was worried that I would end up hating the Pil-sook/Jason couple after she went on her boy-motivated diet, but now I find them much more interesting, because the 200 days created enough distance and misunderstanding for the tables to turn. Now Chipmunk’s the one who’s confused and orbiting her, so it makes them more evenly matched. And not because she’s pretty now, but because she’s discovered things about herself and her dream in the process.
I also like that they’re doing something with Jason’s character, and jolting him out of his golden-boy complacency. The idea that he’s resting on his laurels while everyone else fights tooth and nail is an interesting dynamic to bring up, and I hope Pil-sook’s words challenge him to find a dream.
But the best part of the reversal is Baek-hee’s feeling of being left behind by her rival. She’s someone who’s motivated by competition, and now that Hye-mi doesn’t want to play that game, she’s actually feeling adrift. It redefines the frenemy relationship, and makes their connection so interestingly layered—it’s love and hate, fuel and poison. I think theirs is the relationship to look out for.
Besides, how’s a girl to choose between these two?

One little detail that is just DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!! If it was winter and snowing when K left for their debut, then 200 days later, how can it still be winter and snowing?!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know, I can't believe this bugs me, but it's bugging the heck out of me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't the script writer make it like 1 year later or something so it would make more sense why it still would be WINTER?!!!!!!!!!!!!! And really would PS's hair really grow that long in 200 days? Pffft..... I know I'm batty....guess have way too much time on my hands......ha! ha! ha!

200 days is more than half a year.. so i wouldn't be surprised her hair grown quite long. what i thought didnt quite make sense is how they let them be out of school for that long. 6 months, that's a whole semester ++

Haha I noticed that too! It was like.. 200 days later, the van arrived at Kirin and the ground was still covered in thick layer of snow and I was like "Huh? Since when has Korea become Winter Wonderland?"
But oh well this kind of thing is common in dramas so let's just close one eye and continue to enjoy the story ;)

When the showcase occurred it was around May 2010, so the 200 days later is winter time of that year. I noticed that and am going with that logic. What bothers me though is considering that its extremely cold out there, how can these girls be dressed in short skirts and tights won't the legs be frozen? That to me does not ake much sense.

Actually, the 200 days bother me, too. I'm wondering what happened to the pregnant teacher who went on maternity leave that Teacher Jin Man replaced. How long is maternity leave in Korea...one year?:-/ Unless they'll patch up that plothole by saying she resigned to concentrate on motherhood.
And it's not just the journalists who were silent on the scoop about JG being his dad's son--what about Hye Mi's dad? What was he doing for almost 7 months in Canada?

One more thing: SD's brain injury/ear problem... since he seems okay almost 7 months later, then I suppose that's fixed itself. I'm going to get really annoyed if they put that back in again...

why would a whimp full with emotional baggage gets the girl just because he's handsome, cool, meets the girl first and had childhood history with her.
why not the cute, talented, optimistic and cheerful country bumpkin, instead?

HAHAHA i love you. i want to kiss and hug you..like exactly what i want to say just because he gets to meet the girl first and has history with her and all complicated love with her means he will get the girl.
i mean why? is a girl not allowed to fall for a sweet, talented, optimistic and cheerful cutie. ha in real life who would you choose?
and if someone ditched you like that dont you think after 200 days you would be over him?
in real life this is the part your girlfriend will tell you that he has waaayyyy more emotional baggage to handle a relationship ..arghh
i hate how they put the K-drama formula into play..like what aren't we allowed to get a unconventional ending??
in real life would you really turn down someone as sincere as samdong?

It's interesting that you see Jingook as having ditched Hyemi/ That's a very Hyemi-centric way to see things, especially after refusing to hear out Jingook every single time he reached out.
Jingook is not a bad guy. He is a guy with issues definitely, who definitely has less energy to give to Hyemi at this juncture than Samdong can.
And people are free to choose to steer clear of such guys, but it's too simplistic to write off such people as bad people.

they're not saying JG is bad. he's just making it more complicated by the way he handles his "issues". and he's not making the right choices with regards to HM. he was being crappy and he expects HM to be open every time to him? HM is...still HM. she's moody and rude and crappy. but she's growing. HM also has issues of her own and in this episode, she's dealing with it the right way (ex. Baek-hee scenes). not to say that SD doesn't have any issues at all. he has father issues too, plus the hearing thing. but he had a wonderful mom who gave him lots of sage advice that he uses and even shares with HM. like what their teacher told HM last episode:
"Your drama has a long way to go before it’s over. So don’t force yourself to go quickly. If you go slowly, you can see a lot more, in more detail, than the people who go quickly. If you ask me who would grow more between those two, I’d say it’s the one who goes slowly and sees a lot."
SD is not always "good". he has his bad moods too since he's human. he's just more patient and i see him as someone who looks at the overall picture, not so very narrow-minded. you could say he's more mature too in dealing with life.

But I don't understand how else people want him to deal with his issues.
People have said he should have let Hyemi know. He tried. She and Samdong shut him down. Every time.
People have said he should go deal with his issues and not drag Hyemi into it. He tried. He debuted, thinking that his father wouldn't be able to push him around that way. He basically even gives up his father on national TV.
It seems people are holding against him the fact that he performed with Baekhee. Things just turned out that way.
As for Samdong, I totally don't think he's all good. I think he's overstepped his bounds with Hyemi repeatedly, especially concerning Jingook. (The scene in the basement when he confronts Jingook re: Hyemi, red flags went up for me. Something dangerous there in that boy.) If I'd been Hyemi, I'd have told him off already. But I'm not Hyemi. She's the one who's being a dolt in regards to Jingook, unwilling to acknowledge openly her feelings for him and instead hiding behind porcupine prickliness.
Anyhoo, I have to laugh at myself for getting so invested in this love triangle. :)

I can’t decide. If I see Hye-mi with Jin-gook I’m rooting for them, because they like each other and for me that’s enough. I love Sam-dong, but she is not into him…yet. And that’s the other part. Every time Sam-dong and Hye-mi are together they look good, she looks happy around him and he would die for her, so I end rooting for them too. This triangle is great.
Pil-sook,oh I love her. I was so happy for her.
Is it wrong that I laughed when Jin-gook´s dad was talking on TV? He looked so…fake? saying that things. Coming from him they sounded so corny.
I don’t know who chose the mexican pink suit that Jin-man was wearing, but please burn it. Or maybe not, it made me laugh. But his dance is cool.
Thank you for the recap!

Totally agree with you on JG's dad.
I thought JG was going to puke on him.
Then he had to go and do that hand-on-hand move. You could see that while the Dad's touch was all for the cameras, JG's response was genuine, so JG could keep him there just a moment longer. More heart shatterings.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the appeal of Sam Dong! He reminds me too much of the guy who grovels at a girl's feet and gives her everything in the world when she doesn't even work for it. I like a guy with some (good) ego without all this starry-eyed goo-goo business. Maybe this is why those dangerously flawed bad boys are so popular in life.
I prefer Taecyeon with Hye-Mi, but damn, get a move on already!!! Do something big and drastic and show her what you've got! If not, I'd rather you please end up with Sam Dong. At least that wont' disappoint.
Pil-sook and Jason sure are stealing the spotlight, aren't they? :D They remind me of a Boy Over Flower's Kim Bum and Kim So Eun (eh, forgot their character's name). Besides the ultra flashy awesome dancing and singing, I'm pretty much watching for this couple right here! BURN, JASON, BURN! And then WIN HER BACK.

hahaha.. you're probably right about sam dong
but i don't mind having a guy who grovels at my feet and gives me everything in the world.
There are too many dose of bad boys with enormous ego to sink a ship in real life.
Boys who actually think that girl will attracted to you if you treated them badly.

LOL i know what you mean, but i think it's quite extreme to categorize samdong grovel-er(?) he's sweet and somewhat naive, so he's not gonna play Mr. Cool to get the girl, it's just not him. i think he has plenty of self respect for himself, but he's awkward and clunky and cares about other people's feelings that his ego is not outwardly expressed. plus, he's fighting for his chance and takes advantage of the opportunity while jingook wavers....and let's jingook know too! besides that, it's awesome watching him making himself vulnerable to hye-mi, because...it's like he putting trust in her, hoping she won't turn it down. it's just very endearing.

and cant a girl get a good, honest, devoted guy? tell me you dont want someone like that?

Oh, no, I'm not debating whether I'd choose between a bad boy or a good boy; I'm just saying I prefer Jin-Gook over a sweet bumbling innocent high school kind of loverboy! Besides, we all know Jin-Gook isn't some bad boy who's out to break girl's hearts because of an ego problem :)
P.S. My dislike of Sam Dong's love acts stem from personal experience with a real-life boy who acts exactly like him...right down to the bits where he tells everyone that him and I are together! It's totally unattractive to me, esp. since I don't like him, so I guess this is where it influences my perception of Sam Dong.

haha my dislike for jingook stems from a looooong list of boys who has wayyyy more emotional baggage than me. gets into a relationship half way through tells you he needs to sort things out with his issues first. and dont get me started on the loooooonger list of dudes who are nice but has ego and complexes more twisted than a french braid haha

I find amusing all the personal baggage we bring to our individual readings of these characters and the storylines.
How about this? I've been with both Samdongs and Jingooks (as the stereotypes) and both have their own set of problems. :)

Try being with a guy whose affections are like a puppy dog's. That gets tiring really fast.
As for Samdong, while he's a bit puppyish, he's certainly not reducible to a puppy. He does help Hyemi grow.

Good question about a tiring love.
It is human nature to be more satisfied with something we work for versus something handed to us.
Does this type of love last longer? IDK
Or, is it the struggle teaches the value of learning and growing together as they figure out how to negotiate the lows and highs of life?

OH MY! Dream high how I love thee. I cannot begin to count the ways. First off, I have to commend the writer & director. Whoever you are, you are doing a FABULOUS JOB. The team behind this show, I hope you make many more...many many more!
Real angsty stuff today, but I'm cool with it because we get real development and stuff actually happens. Usually with angst we go around and around in circles without any progression. That is one of the things I'm loving about this drama - STUFF ALWAYS HAPPENS!
Mi-Gook couple 4 life. Their "destined", and I sense Hye-mi and Sam-dong as friends. She doesn't seem to have the deeper more raw emotional connection with him as she does with JG. She gets his pain and he's seen her literally at her worst. And they're so cute when they're happy. When he sneaks up on her near the end. SO ADORABLE!
Also super happy that the Jason Pilsook story has some dramatic dynamics. THE CUTE was REALLY CUTE, but give me some misunderstandings and drama!!
Completely off topic, but the science nerd in me came out in the episode. The beginning of the misfit dance uses "Right here, right now" by fatboy slim which is also used in the Harvard molecular biology video's. LOL

I like how they're going with the Milk Couple. I figured that it might be another "semi-Oh Hani" type of love with her shaping her motivations around him.
If it was going to be a Pilsook-likes-Jason-so-she-loses-weight-and-suffers-and-he-likes-her-now-since-she's-all-purty-storyline for their love line, I would've been mighty disappointed with the writer.

The show is about perseverance and the consequent triumphs that come with it!!! SamDong has to get the girl ;_;
I'm deeper into denial than he is, when they don't end up together I'll be the one sitting in bed and eating ice cream, bawling my eyes out. Which is amazing because I started this show as a diehard JinGuk/HyeMi supporter, but that kiss on the cheek has totally got me. SamDong's got game.

thank you for the recap!! love the feel-goodness of this series! I was also disappointed that Jin-gook didn't get Sam-dong some underwear.
I'm torn between the two guys, though I lean a little towards a Jin-gook and Hye-mi couple. I feel like Jin-gook can call Hye-mi out on any BS despite the love googles - which is why I loved the Pil-sook and Jason scene so much when she told him she was disappointed in him. I'm not sure if Sam-dong can do that. He may just let Hye-mi run roughshod over him when they grow old. I can't feel like it is a relationship of equals with him being the adoring puppy.
But on the other hand, I feel like Hye-mi needs more light and less drama in her life and Sam-dong is also such a warm, steadying presence while Jin-gook drifts in and out. Samdong is a guy with roots.
It'd probably better for them to all remain single if they are going to be idols. (though I am really rooting for the Milk couple)

I totally get the support for Jin-gook and it makes sense--JG and HM are more on equal ground; they understand each other's parental issues.
But that's exactly why I like the SD/HM couple. Sure, he's a puppy most of the time, but in this episode, we've gotten glimpses of him asserting himself--to JG, by clearly laying out his intentions. More importantly, he's doing it to HM too--to the point that even she recognizes "you're acting manlier recently" (or whatever that line was.)
Plus, the thing about JG and HM being the same also means that SD can offer HM things that JG can't. Whereas JG can recognize when HM's in trouble/self-pitying and calls her out on it, he doesn't really ever go past that. He'll listen to her troubles, call her out on her BS, etc...But it's SD that does active support--painting the mural, the drawings, etc...not to mention, from the HM and BH scene in this ep, we can see how HM can not only go to SD for a shoulder to cry on, but she can learn from him. SD is showing her how to fight, because he's fighting desperately for her...whereas JG is hot and cold (though we can hardly blame him for this, circumstances are kinda making him their bitch), which is hardly a healthy, equal relationship--is she supposed to just wait for him, as he's off jet-setting around? No. She's learning to fight and climb to the top...with SD at her side.
AH, long comment is long. T_T But my love for SD is unending.

LOL. Well put! Really well put!
@Asianromance - Jingook calls Hyemi out on her BS. He wants her to be strong. To figure things out on her own (just as he's had to.) He's tough, tacit love. As for Samdong, I'd disagree with you that he doesn't check Hyemi. He does, except he turns them into gentle, teaching moments. So it's a matter of style.

I really can't hate JG for choosing to wimp out, 'cos most of those choices were to rebel against his dad anyhow, so he's being selfish after all!?! Well, there comes certain sacrifices towards freedom, JG doesn't want those direct deposits in his bank account from daddy, heck, I'll gladly take 'em, so I merely hope he is certain his sacrifices are worth it by the end. I'm not sure I want to see this tall stud give me puppy eyes of regret later on.
What can I add about this adorable Milk couple, you all haven't said already? When sushi girl orbits chipmunk, she borrows song after song to make the guy go nuts for her, but instead she goes nuts for him. Now, sushi girl no longer, yogurt girl, has chipmunk "panic" and "while waiting" for her promise to ensure he is starting to act nuts. I had a slim thought Jason was about to toss that lollipop aside, reads his frustrating body language, symbolism and all its meaning, yeah, I did sigh relief he kept it. Sometimes, a nanosecond can make a person's head spin 360*.
KSH is doing a superb acting job. He's talented full of awesomeness. PJY keeps me jolly every episode, and I can't think of anyone else who can top his Hammer impression. As for the girl playing Hye-mi’s little sister, I have a strong feeling her classmates will envy her next day at school raving about kissing 2PM's Ok Taecyeon. Oh, where is my Lucky Charms!?! ^ , ^ v

Really? do they have to have Taecyeon and Suzy end up together (cos that seems like a high possibility)??? I am not a big fan of Jason-Pilsook pairing mainly because I didn't like the idea of IU losing weight just so the guy will like her, i admit they are cute and their interactions are gush worthy.. However after this episode I am loving Pilsook's character and if Jason shapes up I will probably ship this pairing..
I don't like Sam Dong-Hye Mi pairing either... He didn't go to Seoul because of her it's because of his desire to be a singer I hope he concentrates on that because he clearly have hidden talents..
I'm glad Hyemi's character is shedding her bratty and almighty attitude.. :)
Right now I'm shipping Hyemi-Pilsook.. they're so cute in the previous episode.. Hyemi and her 'fangirl' moment.. lol

aughhhh. i don't know who to root for anymore. i wanted hyemi and samdong but after the past two episodes, all i want is for hyemi and jingook to end up together...ahhh. the only consistency for me is wanting the jason and pilsook thing to work out eventually.
i really enjoy how things are panning out there. there's development with almost all of the characters and there's something to be said for the fact that viewers are stuck in the same love triangle as the main characters. i feel like it's usually so easy to pick which side we want the girl/guy to end up with but for once, i'm really stuck in the middle.
dream high is seriously a win for me. it's one of those dramas that took almost 4 episodes to actually begin but it was well worth the wait. i hope that it continues like this: moving but not too fast that the viewers get left behind.

AWESOME RECAP yet again, thank you! :)
I am SO the bandleader of the Gook-Mi camp!! Baek Hee out of the way NOW! RAWR! (...even though I love your funky purple highlights)
Taec was so so hot when they started practising the snake dance. And the scene where the Misfits were imagining the different birds was so symptomatic of their individual characters - Jason was an ostrich sticking his head into the sand, Pil-suk was Tweety - LOL, and Hye-mi saw herself as a graceful, aloof swan. The actual bird dance was completely lacklustre though. Fancy camera tricks and lots cutting away and panning onto Sam-Dong don't hide the fact that these kids except Jason can't really dance and the silly outfits meant that they looked completely bumbling next to the well-synchronised and stylish snake dance. Third place was a stretch even for me and all my fanlove for the Misfits.
I'm don't really know what to think of the new Pil-suk. I loved fat Pil-suk, she was spunky even if living in a slightly alternate reality. But the same ditziness on the new Pil-suk seems...I dunno...kinda goody two shoes and air-headed. Didn't like the way she preached on Jason. Way to treat the guy after he didn't moan about being stuck with you lot in a basement instead of group K. His failing is also part of his charm, Pils.
The more Baek-hee interferes with the development of Gook-Mi, the more I want to bitchslap her into the next dimension. I have no sympathy for her at all. I still think Suzy is a terrible actress (emote goddammit) but I'm a HM fan irregardless and it's surprising how endearing she's become after all the awful diva behavior in the first two episodes.
And....JYP. Rocked. It.

so i wasnt the only one that feels like pilsook lost her loveable spunk as she lost her weight. maybe her character are meant to be like that - to show she undergoes emotional growth as much as physical changes, but i really misses the bumbling adorable old pilsook, who runs here and there to hide in embarrassment whenever jason walks around.
and yes the way she reprimand jason sounds really stuck-up-ish, even tho i was glad she did it, cos jason do need some sense into his head after all those arrogance he's been showing in this episode. i just hope when jason starts to chase after her, she doesn't act like she's too good for him, cos i didnt see him acting too good for her when he was the best in the school (still is!) and she was still a-girl-who-wont-debut-unless-she-lost-30-kgs

I have to disagree with you there, pilsook didn't sound stuck-up at all to me. After her reprimanding him she even said "i'm sorry if that made you angry". If you watched closely, you could tell from pilsook's facial expression (like when jason said he could just improvise the new dance moves) she was thinking "oh no, i like you and all but that was not the right attitude". And she is right in telling him that she said all that to him was because she is his fan cuz really, if you truly care for a person you'd point out their faults in hopes that they'll reflect on it and become a better person no? If she was stuck-up then that would mean she doesn't care about him. I love that she said that she's an honest fan(something along that line, can't tell with the many different subs), cuz i'd hate for her to be one of those delusional ones where they think their oppa is perfection in every way. And she's still a bumbling adorable dork, how about that scene where she was copying the dance moves and the fact that she still stuck lollipops on his locker?

i guess stuck up wasn't the best word to use up there. lol
i think its because her character change was quite abrupt (it doesn't appear so in the timeline, because she went through the 200day diet, but it feels like a big change because those 200days are only represented in a few minutes of montage)
like hyemi's character change feels gradual, because we get to see her slowly changing, whereas pilsook.. when she come back skinny and pretty and with a new confidence, it feels like another person, and while watching i had to keep telling myself that this is the new pilsook (which really make me miss the old one :X)
but im actually really glad that the eye opener comes from her, because i think if it was said by someone else (eg the teacher or hyemi), jason probably wouldn't hear it. since this comes from a girl that used to idolize him, so i think the effect to him is greater.
i love how they made this twist tho. now the tables have turned yewww :D

I am a total MiGook shipper, but I think Hye-Mi might very possible end up with Sam Dong. I mean, all these moments between Jin Gook and Hye Mi would, for other k-dramas, very evidently point to them being the OTP, but the fact that Dream High has all of that but is still currently firmly in the middle ground between Jin Gook and Sam Dong makes it seem that they are deliberately avoiding many of the normal k-drama cliches- so Hye Mi has a good chance of ending up with Sam Dong.

I was guessing it was -- It would be kinda confusing to the "real audience" if it changed.
Although, we are seeing that this unprepared and shoved into the spotlight too soon group is not pulling in the audience expected. Maybe they will shut it down.
I can see the members changing over the years, but to go from a Idol group to just an Idol?

Wait to give SamDong his happy ending, you'll match his rival with someone who is insane.

The reason I want Jin Gook to end up with Hye-mi is because I think he really won't be happy with anyone else but her. It's the look in his eyes when he's watching her, or when he sees her with Sam Dong. Taecyeon is shaping up to be a serious male romantic lead in the future if he can project this sort of expression in a high school show. He wasn't quite there yet in Cinderella's Sister but he's hitting it out of the ballpark here.
Whereas Sam Dong, he's like a puppy. Hye-mi gave him a few pats on the head and he's hers for life...or for now? He's a warmer, fluffier character than Jin Gook and I can see him bonding easily with another girl. But it's only Hye-mi for Jin Gook.
In fact I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Sam Dong and Baek-hee would in fact be a great couple. Sam Dong's sincerity and goofiness would go a long way in healing the bitterness and need-to-be-first-ishness in Baek-hee's heart, while he would be able to embrace her and love her for who she is, incomplete and imperfect.

... Yeah... Jin Gook seems like he won'the happy with anyone but Hye Mi; but Sam Dong also... seem to have only Hye Mi. Look at this country bumpkin, he's not made a single friend since he's been in Seoul.
Jin Gook seems like he's a friendly guy and is fully capably of finding himself another girl, seeing that they are falling at his feet everywhere he goes.
Sam Dong is the kind of boy who know what he wants and will pursue until he gets it. And Hye Mi is what he wants and he will work for it. He is not a pushover. He just wants to make her happy (Like a real boyfriend should do).

Hye Mi unfortunately is not a what. She's a person.
True, sometimes, sheer effort and devotion does move someone's heart. Oftentimes, it won't. It may move a person to settle for someone whom they love but aren't in love with.
Feelings. They're pesky that way.

I can't remember where I read someone post this but in my own words, it goes something like this:
Everyone keeps referring to Sam Dong as a puppy - cute sweet and cuddly (he is!). And I think that is why Jin Gook and Hye Mi will be together... Because you will always love your puppy (dog), but you don't fall in love with them!
It sounded better in my mind than when I put it into words.
Yay for
MiGook <3

Noooooo! The preview! I want me some SamDong and Hyemi love! This is the first time I wanted the second lead to be the love interest. I never really buy the second-lead-guy-first-lead-girl ship before, but now I do! I want SamDong to win!
WooU couple is just too cute! And I totally love the fact that the 200 days made her realize her dream more than her love for Jason. I hated that the idea of her losing weight was only for the guy. haha.

FYI: SamDong is not the second lead. I think they set it up so that the 6 have equal standing. However, if you check Dream High’s profile on some internet sites, you’ll see Kim Soo-hyun/Sam Dong always gets mentioned first.

Thanks for recapping!!!
----Oooooh. I miss the days when you were wearing each other’s underwear (I was really hoping there was a gift box for Sam-dong with a pair of boxer briefs.) but I do enjoy that there’s a new rivalry in town. ----
*nods, nods* so true, so true! I miss it too. Hope they'll put more similar underwear events in the near dramaland future.
Let me dream SSD/JG's bromance. If they cannot get the respective girl, they could at least enjoy each other's love ^v^

I love how the screenwriter plays with the audience on the love perspective.
As for now, I think JG-HM romance would be the mature, equal one. Instead SSD-HM romance would be the romantic/fairytale (prince pushing his kingdom on his princess) one. I see it, SSD & HM's relationship seems to me more like siblings than lovers one.
Still it'd be great if HM stays single till the end and enjoys her happy successful life.

Thanks for the recaps JB and GF! I don't have much time to diligently look out for the episodes like I did with Secret Garden. Dramabeans is a gift <3

"what was the press doing for the past 200 days?"
I assume they were waiting for Jingook to debut and make a name for himself so the news becomes more catchy and juicy :)

Am a totally samdong & hyemi fan, with that much sincerity from the guy...samdong is the man. I would so totally pick samdong then jingook who has a lot of issues. I am sure even if jingook get his issues fixed would't they be the most boring couple ever. I mean samdong and hyemi together is simply adorable and a perfect mixture. But yes the writers are killing us on the suspense on who she would end up with......but please make it samdong or I will totally hate this drama.
Pilsook and Jason couple on the other hand is the feel good aspect of a loveline in this drama because men seeing samdong getting heartbroken every time just kills me, while when Jingook gets heartbroken I am totally happy about it. I hope he steps down and choose Hyemi's happines by handing her over to Samdong.

Love the show. Couldn't wait for the video, so I read the recap. Also wanted to let you know that the male character in Candy Candy is "Terry Woods" not Terius (although everyone who subs seems to write Terius as well). =P
