Dream High: Episode 14

Aw, what a tearjerker of an episode, but in the best possible way — not because it’s been overstuffed with tragedy, but because there’s so much touching, heart-stirring goodness baked into the crust.

Also: We were right! I was pretty sure about Baek-hee’s situation at the end of last week, but not convinced the drama would go there. Well, Dream High did, in fact, go there. Bravo, I’m actually impressed that the show dared get into the issue of industry bigwigs sexually preying on their young protégés, and pointing out the cultural victim-blaming problem that afflicts those brave enough to blow the whistle on the bad guys.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

We back up to discover how the Baek-hee/Jin-gook/President issue blew up, starting with Baek-hee visiting the president’s office to ask for another chance.

As suspected, Jin-gook had arrived soon thereafter, intent on confronting the president about using his father for publicity. He’d seen something to infuriate him (we don’t see it) and dragged the president out into the hall, beating him up.

And now, he’s being denounced as a thug by the public. The teachers sympathize with his plight, but can’t do much to help him.

Jin-gook walks out with the K pendant Sam-dong gave him, and sees Hye-mi talking to Baek-hee on the roof. Baek-hee knows she should speak up, but she’s too scared to do it, because that’ll mean doom for her. As Hye-mi holds Baek-hee, she looks up to see Jin-gook looking at her across the way, and her words are as much for him as they are for Baek-hee: That she shouldn’t say anything, “Because that’s what Jin-gook will want. He’ll understand. It’ll be okay.”

Jin-gook watches her with tears in his eyes and gives her a nod.

We get our new challenge o’ the day: An open audition is being held by the label EMG for new talent. (One of my favorite things about this scene is how Ah-jung insults In-sung’s hopes of winning, and he responds by curling his fingers into a claw, as you can see just almost out of frame. Hee.)

The conditions are many: Entrants must submit (1) a 3-minute music video highlighting one’s talents, (2) of a song they’ve composed, (3) with English subtitles, (3) ideally in three languages, (4) who have won at least 10 music-related competitions. So basically, the label wants you to do all the work. Well, can’t say that’s not true to life, eh?

That effectively disqualifies everyone, and they sigh that they can’t participate with those stringent requirements.

Police have seen a glimpse of Baek-hee in the surveillance footage of Jin-gook’s attack, and Kyung-jin and Oh-hyuk find her to ask for an explanation. She nearly collapses from the shock, and confides the truth (which again, we are not privy to).

But the matter isn’t as clear-cut as marching down to the police station and clearing Jin-gook’s name immediately, as Oh-hyuk wants. Kyung-jin warns him that there’s no proof that he was acting in self-defense. Oh-hyuk says it’s simple — Baek-hee can testify — but Kyung-jin calls him cruel to think nothing of Baek-hee’s circumstances: She’ll have to admit to the world that she was sexually assaulted.

Frustrated, Oh-hyuk asks if they can sacrifice one person’s dream to preserve another’s. Kyung-jin, more sensitive to the plight of the female entertainer, says that Jin-gook can recover from this, but Baek-hee can’t. And as sad as that is, it’s probably true, with Korea’s ass-backwards tendency to blame the victim, particularly when the victim is female.

Kyung-jin reminds Oh-hyuk that they’ve seen this happen before, and asks if he recalls the public and the media ever taking the side of the victim: “They’ll tear Baek-hee to pieces.” She vows to never let that happen to her, which Baek-hee overhears.

At dinner, Jin-gook is back in fine eating form and is even looking cheery (as he tries to steal from Sam-dong’s bowl, which Sam-dong is quick to deflect). His good mood is odd since he admits he’s going to apologize to President Yoon tomorrow, along with his father: “Since I made acted wrongly, I should apologize.”

Oh-hyuk comes home in heavy spirits, feeling bad for Jin-gook and patting his shoulder affectionately, feeling torn about his sacrifice but not wanting to make a big deal of it.

It’s not just him; everyone’s feeling pretty bad for Jin-gook, but nobody knows exactly how to show their support. Sam-dong does it by passing along the forms for the EMG competition, and is surprised when Jin-gook says he already got the forms.

Sam-dong mutters in disgruntlement, “I didn’t even have to worry,” which makes Jin-gook smile. He prods, “Were you worried about me?” Sam-dong sputters and protests. Oh, just admit your lurrrve, already!

Hye-mi apologizes to Jin-gook: “I know I should be on your side instead of Baek-hee’s, but I can’t do that.” She feels even worse than Jin-gook, who smiles at her understandingly, fine with her choice.

Sam-dong tries to cheer her up with a lame pun, which doesn’t work, so he pinches her cheeks and tells her to force a smile anyway:

Sam-dong: “Do you know what it means to become an adult? It means there’s less and less to smile about. So we’ll have to smile even more, even if we have to force it. Like Jin-gook.”

She comments that the old Sam-dong has returned. He replies with a noncommittal, “The old Sam-dong? Hmm.”

Jin-gook’s father waits outside to take them to the president’s office, and Oh-hyuk takes a moment to tell him that there’s probably a good reason that Jin-gook isn’t offering up an explanation for his attack. He doesn’t betray the reason, merely says that he knows Jin-gook, and that he is likely acting to protect something.

Father and son are mobbed by reporters on their way to the president’s hospital room, where Dad bows his head and apologizes for Jin-gook’s rash behavior. Jin-gook offers his apology as well, kneeling on the ground to pick up some fallen fruit as he does so. The slimy president slaps Jin-gook on the head a few times, deriding his ungratefulness to the president who made him a star, and the generous father who adopted him as his son.

The president’s blows get a bit aggressive, but when reporters burst into the room to record every gory detail, Jin-gook can do nothing but apologize again, and the president’s slaps turn into gentle pats for the cameras’ benefit.

However, Dad catches the sly change, and his hackles are raised to see his son disrespected. He intercepts the president’s hand, and declares that Jin-gook is not adopted, that he’s his blood child. Omo!

The cameras flash away but Dad ignores them and Jin-gook’s request to not continue, declaring that he’d lied because he was embarrassed of his past. He says that Jin-gook has such a foolishly pure heart that he doesn’t believe for a second that such a kid would hit the president out of the blue. Even though he doesn’t know what that reason is, he’s certain there is one.

He takes Jin-gook’s hand and leads him away. Both Jin-gook and Dad’s secretary urge him to go back and fix this, but Dad is resolute. He won’t ask Jin-gook for the reason, but he guesses that the president was behaving badly, and Jin-gook confirms it. Dad is satisfied with that explanation and takes Jin-gook’s hand.

The resulting scandal about Jin-gook being his love child effectively puts to bed Dad’s political aspirations. But the fact that Dad would give up his upcoming election bid to stand by his son stirs some speculation among the Kirin students that perhaps Jin-gook’s the wronged party in his own scandal.

Baek-hee broods, thinking of how Jin-gook once promised to have faith in her, how Hye-mi comforted her, and Kyung-jin promised to protect her. So when Hye-mi texts Baek-hee to ask if she’s doing okay, she gets back the response that Baek-hee’s on her way to the police station to confess the whole story.

Hye-mi runs after her, but Baek-hee slips away in a taxi. Hye-mi calls to tell her to stop, but Baek-hee no longer wants to live by cheating, admitting that she’d wronged her, too, by dropping the flower pot.

Baek-hee: “I think it started then. Like you said, I felt like I was living in hell. I was always scared, cold, and lonely. I’m sorry, Hye-mi. But there were a lot of people who cared about me, so I’m okay now. I’m not lonely, or scared. No, I’m a little scared now. Hye-mi, can you sing me a song? I really want to hear you sing.”

She asks for their audition song, “Goose’s Dream,” and amidst her tears, Hye-mi sings:

I have a dream
Even if it is shredded or torn,
In my heart,
I’ve cherished it like a treasure

Even if I’m mocked behind my back,
I’ve endured
I could stand it,
waiting for that day

You always say worriedly,
Foolish dreams are poisonous
Just like the world is a book with a fixed ending,
it’s a reality that can’t be turned back

Yes, I have a dream
I believe in that dream,
Watch and see
In front of that cold brick wall called fate
I can stand confidently

One day, I’ll climb over that wall
I’ll be able to fly as high as the sky
Even this heavy world can’t tie me down
At the end of my life,
on that day that makes me smile
Be with me

*Sniff* All right, let’s see a show of hands — who (else) is crying?

Bolstered by Hye-mi’s support, Baek-hee makes her statement to the police, which blows up into a huge story. The barely pixelated photos of her circulate in the media, which report that one of Group K’s members, known as Ms. K, was sexually assaulted by the president.

To her credit, even (formerly) cold-hearted Mom confronts President Yoon and throws the abalone box (sadly empty) at him, screaming at him for his crime.

At school, Jin-gook confronts her, upset that she ignored his instructions to keep quiet. She says she’s sorry, but assures him she’s holding up okay.

She tells him she likes him a lot, but that he’d only had eyes for Hye-mi, which had hurt her and made her wonder, Why Hye-mi? But now she understands: “Normally when people give people something, they hold back their share. Even when protecting someone, they do it after protecting themselves first. But you’re different — you threw yourself away to protect me. That’s enough for me. Hoping for more will only bring me punishment.”

She thrusts out a handshake and thanks him for sticking to his promise through the end, and he shakes.

This means that all the Group K contracts are terminated with Top Agency, and a new agency has selected four members for a new group, which excludes Baek-hee and Jin-gook. The other agencies are gun-shy of crossing President Yoon, which makes it difficult for them to be picked up by anyone else.

Principal Shi tells Kyung-jin to talk to the two students: Since it’ll be nearly impossible to build their careers, it’ll be best they find a new career path. He calls it their duty as teachers, but Kyung-jin angrily balks — they can’t tell them to quit now, when they’ve just started. Teachers should help them stand again, considering that they’d fallen at the hands of a wicked adult: “That is our duty.”

Principal Shi almost loses his temper, but Oh-hyuk supports her, and the other teachers do as well.

Jin-gook’s father asks to meet in a place away from prying eyes, and so, Jin-gook finally gets another trip with his dad in a Ferris wheel. Dad’s here now that he knows what the fight with President Yoon was about. He tells Jin-gook he’d decided correctly, because if he’d told him the truth, he would have acted rashly, sacrificing Baek-hee to save him.

He wonders if Jin-gook’s reputation will recover sufficiently in four years — he’s planning to rekindle his political hopes and run for mayor then. Jin-gook promises to be careful.

Oh-hyuk works on persuading Doo-shik to take on Sam-dong, Jin-gook, and Baek-hee under his White Entertainment aegis. Doo-shik is reluctant, knowing that each student comes with problems, and says that he established his company to realize his precious dream. He’s not about to throw it away carelessly. Oh-hyuk turns his own words around on him, arguing that these kids have precious dreams, too — dreams that will die unfulfilled if not cultivated. But working together, they have the capacity to turn their dreams — including Doo-shik’s — into reality. Oh-hyuk does have a way with words when dealing with him, and Doo-shik is almost persuaded…but slaps himself out of it.

Baek-hee practices her dance moves alone at night, having skipped her classes, and Kyung-jin finds her in the studio to ask about it. Baek-hee says she finds it embarrassing to face the other kids. Rather than scolding her, Kyung-jin blinks back tears and decides that they can conduct their lessons here, instead — every night at 9pm, just the two of them.

Baek-hee hugs her teacher and thanks her earnestly. Kyung-jin assures her that things will be okay, and holds her while Baek-hee gives in to her tears.

At lunch the next day, Baek-hee holds her head up high as she sits alone, where Hye-mi finds her to suggest they enter the EMG contest together. Baek-hee protests that she doesn’t meet the qualifications, but Hye-mi says airily that she doesn’t, either: “And if I don’t, then the whole country doesn’t.” Hee. Love her confidence.

She concludes that the impossibility of meeting the criteria means she can just ignore them altogether (ha) — which is exactly what Pil-sook and Jason have decided. As have Jin-gook and Sam-dong, who join them a moment later. (Adorably, Pil-sook and Jason have also set aside an application for Jin-gook, as Sam-dong did.)

Aww, yeah! The group is complete: Wonder K powers, activate!

They all agree to help each other make their music videos (well, Jason balks, until Pil-sook readily agrees, and then he joins in on the fun).

Afterward, Hye-mi corners Pil-sook to ask about her Jason situation, and Pil-sook reveals the note he’s slipped into her locker: “Miss Sushi, I love you.” OMG.

Hye-mi asks how Pil-sook knew she liked Jason, which is hilarious but perhaps understandable, as the Hye-mi Bot conversion into full human is yet incomplete. Pil-sook answers that he’s always the first person she thinks of, and wants him with her always. Hye-mi walks away shuddering at the cheesiness.

Speaking of humanization: Doo-shik comes to the school and finds Kyung-jin, just as she’s (adorably!) primping (and not wearing all-black for once), adding a flower pin to her hair. She’s so cute as the fumbling flirt since she’s so bad at it, as well as being embarrassed to be caught in the middle of it.

Doo-shik wants her recommendation for students to sign, because she has a reputation for cool-headed, objective judgments. Yet his face falls as she declares the three students worthy of recommendation: Baek-hee, Sam-dong, Jin-gook. (Suspiciously, he asks if she’s planned this with Oh-hyuk. Heh.)

Jin-man bursts in, and Doo-shik asks for his opinion as well, only to get the same response. Aggravated, Doo-shik asks for any other recs, and Jin-min supposes there IS one more…but no, he can’t say it. Doo-shik presses him eagerly, and the playing of Park Jin-young’s “Don’t Leave Me” in the background clues us in to the turn of Jin-man’s thoughts as he declares that this guy has the best dance skills EVAR: himself.

Hye-mi puzzles over how to show her star potential in her music video, and Oh-hyuk offers the suggestion that instead of trying to show their future, they should show their past. If they trace how far they’ve come in the past year, they’d be showing promise of future growth.

The kiddos ahh thoughtfully and think back — and is Hye-mi actually imagining herself as a ROBOT? I love this show.

Jin-gook and Sam-dong smile over how far they’ve come, but Hye-mi figures she was just the same a year ago. Jin-gook reminds her by mimicking her Robot Voice: “I. Have. A. Dream. I. Trust. That. Dream.” Sam-dong adds to that by reminding her of the time she sang while pooping (HAHAHA) and how she did her chicken dance at the sauna.

But when Hye-mi and Sam-dong get caught up in recounting all the hilarious scenes in their past, Jin-gook looks at them a little sadly, left out of the memories.

Hye-sung finds Jin-gook brooding and offers to listen to his problem. He asks who she’d like better: The one who’s with her for a long time, or the one who can’t be with her because he’s busy.

She wants examples, so he asks who she likes better: Sam-dong, who’s been around, or himself, who’s been busy. She thinks a bit, then motions him in closer…then kisses him on the cheek and dashes away. That’s my girl, thinking fast on her feet!

Jason and Pil-sook submit the group’s applications for the EMG contest, and totally make my heart squeeze by the way they look at each other and count together — one, two, three — just so they can bow and say “Thank you” in unison. OMG. Yes, they are THAT couple.

Pil-sook chooses the spot for their shoot — a museum of sorts — and while Jason isn’t thrilled about the backdrop, he agrees to her choice.

Sam-dong’s video — replete with full-size cardboard cut-outs of his old self — takes place in the basement studio. He offers up two “languages”: his “native” accent and his Seoul voice, which is hysterical because he affects this stilted Seoul accent that sounds ridiculously stuffy.

Jin-gook dances in the school studio, while Hye-mi’s video contrasts her old Robot Voice clip with the current Aegyo Hye-mi…which she flubs because she can’t stand the indignity of putting on the cute act. Awesome.

Baek-hee’s video acknowledges her tarnished image, saying that right now people see her as Ms. K, “But I’ll work hard to make the name K a star representing Korea.” Foreshadowing!

Oh-hyuk shows the clips to a stone-faced Doo-shik, saying that these six are the only ones bothering to enter the competition. Everyone else gave up, but they took up the challenge — and doesn’t that mean they’re the top six? Doo-shik is finally moved, and agrees to sign the contracts.

Kyung-jin, who’s been reading the Baek-hee news with a heavy heart, is therefore thrilled with Jin-ma’s good news that Baek-hee, Jin-gook, and Sam-dong are signing with White Entertainment (who’s showing interest in Jason, too).

Squealing in glee, she links her fingers through his in a celebratory gesture, but poor Jin-man has to deal with the disappointment when Kyung-jin pulls her hands away and tears out of the room looking for Oh-hyuk.

Finding him in the hall, she grabs grabs him in a surprise hug. The students cheer and clap at the spectacle, while Principal Shi has palpitations in his office, and Jin-man watches sadly.

Jin-man cheers up when Hye-mi comes by and reacts excitedly to the news, doing the same finger-linking gesture in happiness. When she likewise turns to go, he whines about being ditched again (lol) and asks who she’s running off to find. Jin-gook? Sam-dong?

Hye-mi replies easily, “Who else? Of course I’m going to—” and then stops, surprised with herself.

The moment of realization has come — it’s the person who came to mind first, as Pil-sook described. And then, just to make us stew in our seats a little longer, Hye-mi sees both boys heading toward her, and ducks out of the way.

However, it’s Sam-dong her gaze fixes on, and she sighs to herself, “I must be crazy!”

MUAHAHAHA! Sam-mi it is!

COMMENTS

I’m relieved at the way the president storyline resolved, not least because it means Jin-gook’s daddy issues are finally at an end. Phew! It did drag on for a bit longer than I would have liked, but seeing how it tied in to the larger picture, I’m satisfied. It’s particularly effective that Jin-gook’s big scandal is solved not merely by the truth coming out, but by his father’s complete acceptance of him. He doesn’t care that much about public perception — at least, not more than saving Baek-hee — but he does care about Dad, so it’s fitting that Dad’s love (rather than a rehabilitated image) is his true reward.

As for Hye-mi’s feelings, I daresay many of us predicted this, though I suspect that many were still holding out hope for Jin-gook. This drama has done a particularly good job making both boys a viable option for her, but the reason I’d always believed it would be Sam-dong is because in a k-drama, once a heroine’s feeling’s start to stray away from a guy, he isn’t going to be the one she ends with. It just doesn’t work that way. The dramas are all about realizing your “true” love, no matter the pain and drama and makjang craziness that that entails, not about settling to “love the one you’re with.”

As for K: We got our first strong hint today, and now I’m pretty convinced it’s gotta be Baek-hee. Prior to this episode I’d thought she was possible because of the round-robin of the K pendant. It’s true that all sorts of pendant transfers could happen in the last episode, but the course of this drama has seen it travel from character to character in moments of despair, and with Jin-gook getting it this late, it stands to reason that either he’d keep it, or it would make a poetic full-circle return to Baek-hee. Plus, there’s a nice symbolism to her reclaiming the name K after being tarnished as Ms. K in the media.

But there’s that scene with the pendant when Hye-mi’s playing with it and accidentally drops it into that school drop-box. I thought initially that it was played for a laugh (and it got one from me), but after Baek-hee’s declaration to make the name K proud, it occurred to me that perhaps Hye-mi never fished it out. Now that everyone’s gotten their use from it, perhaps it’ll stay in the box, where Baek-hee will find it at a later date…

Same here, but SD's a great guy so I know I'll get over with it. ;)

What I'm most sad about is the fact that I feel like JG missed his chance. :(

I think he did miss his chances but I can't get myself to blame him since he's had to deal with his daddy issues and all. And they've had their moments, so I'll just settle with those, I think..

And oh. I haven't really watched all of the episodes though I've read all the episode recaps, so I'm not sure whether Hye-mi already remembered that she had met Jingook back when she was a little girl? I hope they bring that up again.. as a sort of tribute to JinMi couple.

Arg. I just wish if she really is going to end up with SamDong, Jingook will be fine with it and happy on his own (and Hye-sung will be by his side! Heh.)

Thank you JB. I love reading your recaps for this drama!

I'll be waiting with bated breath for the next two episodes. I really love the writing, directing, and editing of this drama. The acting is good too.

*I was really happy with the last frame, Hyemi's realization of her feelings for Sam Dong was perfect.
*I was also really satisfied when Baehee decided to confess. Doing the right thing!
*Jinguk's scenes with his father were well done-- great resolution and closure.

This drama is complete and well crafted. I'm optimistic about the final episode. I hope I'm not disappointed... Can't wait to watch episode 15 tonight.

I alway thought it was Baek-hae right from the first episode, as her storyline develop and watching her journeny to belive she worthy is only right she overcome to be a STAR.

It's going to take a long time to heal from rape, the unjust feeling of shame and the lost of innocent. I think Baek-hee and Jin are more compatiable, he the perfect person to help her feel protected. I'm happy Hye-min is going toward Sam-dong, they don't have that "IF" factor like Baek-hee and Jin and Susshi and Jason but I can see them happy. .

i read it before i watched the episode and i must say i sobbed the entire hour.
i think the writers are doing a great job with the story, they are having perfect timing and i don't feel like they are rushing to the end, they are taking their time to wrap up everything without falling into cheesiness, crazy situations or some other crap that is usually placed into a drama to justify a happy ending.
the BH situation was explained without falling into exagerations or violent scenes (well, it`s because of the audience but i think it was a sutile and appropiate); the reconciliation between JG and his father was perfect because it was not forced, through the entire show we saw glimpses of improvement and in this episode JG didn't need to prove or tell his father that he acted to protect a person, he figured it out himself.
finally, the love relationships between the characters are so cute: PS and Jason have the perfect amount of sweetness and i can't get enough of them (i always want more milky couple moments!!!), teacher Kang and Shi are like teenagers together and the evolution of Ms. Shi from black beoch to white flirt really convinces me.
what i'm expecting now is for mr. Ma and Kang's sister to pair up (come on show!), and for teacher jang to get back with his girlfriend or to get a better gal (hehehehe).
Finally, the way HM has develope feelings for SD.... masterpiece!!!!! i hate when characters are melting the entire drama for each other but never speak up until the last episode when i'm bored of the exchange of sighs and deer looks, these are the cliches i hate but i have to endure them. Here, HM was progressively thinking about SD, JG started to figure it out without acting as the alpha male and aware that he was away for a long time, and SD winning the girl just acting the way he is without doing great/exagerated gestures... this is real! i mean, normal guys don't own amusement parks, retailers, hotels, helicopters, BMWs, etc, etc... Sam Dong is kind and real, i believe i can meet a guy like him and be swoon!!!! I love u SAM DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
with two episodes to go, i'm satisfied with the story... i'll miss crack high but i'm thankfull they didn't get extra episodes because the story is perfect as it is.
Thank u again Javabeans!!!!

And while I really liked Baek-hi's growth and maturation throughout the show, I really don't want her to be K...just because she's never been a main character for me, but someone on the sidelines. I've never felt for her.

The terrific three, JG, SD and HM have always elicited tears from me so I'm hoping its one of those three....ahh, who am I kidding, I just want it to be Sam-Dong!!

It's so obvious who K is going to be! It's In-sung! I mean, how can he not be, with his crazy unique hairstyle and all! In-sung to the end! j/k!

Nah, it's either Sam Dong (who's actually the most naturally gifted music-wise of the group) or Baek Hee (who is really the underdog), I think. My preference would be having all 6 of them in a group called K. We know at least 4 of them can sing together nicely (I still have that song they sang to Jin-gook's friend in my head).

I just love this episode. So many surprises.Didn't even imagine that Bae Hee could be K. Eun Jung did such a good job in this episode. That would be a twist in the plot.

Just loved Pilsook Jason toy with the matching jacket. So adorable!

Cried loads of tears in this episode. Hye Mi crying and singing a song at the same time is really difficult. Miss A Suzy is doing such a wonderful job in her first role. I'm impressed. I looked at some of her music videos and she appeared more sophisticated and older in them.

Yahoo! It's SAMMI! I loved it when she finally realizes and says she thinks she's crazy. Love is unexpected and sometimes it is crazy. But it was always been Sam Dong who helped her mature, have empathy for others, become less arrogant, and become less Miss Robot.

Just finished watching episode 15 and man, SamMi shippers you are so going to SPOILER

love it as I did!

Fans of the milky couple would be very happy too.

As to the identity of "K"...I guess what the writers said a few episodes ago that they haven't decided yet and would decide by the last episode is true. It's still a mystery.

Can't wait for GF's recaps & for the last episode next week!!!

I'm not really thrilled with Baek Hee as K, even though it's very likely at this point.....I just don't really like her. Maybe I will in the future though--- if she fills her tour bus with the Misfits Crew!

And the table moment!! Misfits Reunite <3

I wish there was a LIKE button here like Facebook so I could go down the list liking all the comments with SD-HM FTW.. I was so afraid they'd make it a typical show with SD going deaf. HM feeling sorry and going to him. And SD letting her go back to JG coz he knew she really loved him. Which would have made me totally give up on the show.. I am so ecstatic that I was so far off the mark.. :D

If the writers are as smart as they have been all along, it'll be 50/50 right down to the end.

I am guessing even at the end they will set up the shot so we can put HM with either of them. It'll be the viewer's individual choice.

I'm glad the drama did touch the sexual cases that most of us are familiar with.

HOWEVER, I'm just going to throw it out there that in any future should anyone be confronted by a rape victim, Do not tell them what to do or what is best for them. Do not make decisions for them.

As much as I thought it's sweet of HM to comfort BH, telling her not to speak up because it's what JG want is not the best thing to tell a victim. At the core of rape is the feeling of powerlessness. A victim feels a lost of control to their own life and body, so in making decisions for them, telling them what's right and wrong will further that trauma. It's not about what JG wants, but it's about what BH wants at that moment. A more endearing comfort would have been to hold her, and tell her whatever her decision may be she (HM), JG and the rest will support her.

(which was why I felt the KJ/BH moment at the studio was much more emotionally riveting.)

This is coming from a person who knows a rape victim personally and have intercepted an attempted sexual assault.

Same to JG's instruction to BH about keeping quiet.

Wished the writer were a tad bit more in touched with the psychological aspect of rape.

I think the story was responding to the particular challenges of sexual assault/rape of female performers in Korean entertainment industry.

As someone who knows more than one rape and/or assault victims, I'd agree with the above comment, especially within the US. And even in Korea, I'd say it's better to offer unconditional support, but I understand that the impulse of both HyeMi, JinGook, and the female teacher was to shield Baekhee from the all-too-obvious vilification that she would endure by going public.

In some ways, I think the last few episodes will be a critique of the complicity or even outright condemnation of the viewing public who participate in creating such a society wherein victimization is so rampant or whose silences condone such social ethos. I think it's pretty gutsy.

JinGuk, don't miss the last ride. The next one is a 10-year's wait.

I was really proud of Baek-hee this episode, she really proved to me that I was right to believe in and support her character from the beginning. And I loved that her and hye-mi's friendship officially came back together over the same song that broke them up in the first place.

Wow, you're right:) It's a really great full-circle resolution for their friendship.. The conflict between them evened out their relationship [no one is Hye-mi-pa anymore:)] and now that Baek-hee has realized her worth and Hye-mi has toned down her at-ti-tude *snap, snap*, they can be friends who see each other as equals.

Definitely teared up during this episode T_T

But WHAT SAM-MI? I was never for JG/HM but I just assumed.. lol obviously not as adept at predicting kdrama plots as GF & JB XD Have to say I'm a littleee disappointed though, the drama allowed one too many cute scenes between Jin-gook and Hye-mi ><

This drama's couples definitely win for 2011 though :D IU ... also seriously has such an amazing voice no matter how much plastic she had :)

I SoOOOoooo Hope Sam Dong gets Hye Mi.
He deserves to get the girl, for him it was love at first sight! He fallowed her without knowing where he was heading always looking out for her and she later became his strength to overcome his illness. He loves her purely without asking anything in return, just being next to her he's happy. If He doesn't get her Im going to hurt someone lol
AS for PilSuk & Jason they are still my fave couple so adorable together I wish they had more cute moments on screen.

and i am so THRILLED with the Sam-Mi couple! yahooooo! i won't be too happy if K will turn out to be Baek Hee though....i still think Sam Dong is more worthy of that spot.

fine.

i'm so Sam-dong biased.

i'm addicted. no, i'm going CRAZY with the thought that we're down to the last 2 episodes and i won't see him anymore :(

Sam Dong is the guy she has "been" with. The little interlude with the little sister tells me it is Jin-Gook. He is really the guy with the best "character." (The knight in shining armor). The girl always gets the most noble fellow. Sam Dong is experiencing puppy love. I think the camera focused on Sam Dong because it is him she will have to hurt, and that will be painful!

I can understand wanting Sam Dong to get the girl since he is the better actor. I think the drama will come full circle and back to Jin-Gook. The absence has strengthened the love.

I was able to see most of it. The last part was not available. I did watch what I could. The English subtitles have not been written yet, so I am only going by my instincts. I did get the impression that Jin-gook was demonstrating his love for her by not making up her mind. I respect that and view that as true love. Sam-dong seems to think it is in the bag.

I love both guys. They are great. It was Jin-gook who loved her from the beginning when she was not very nice. He actually helped her be a better person. He was an encouragement to her and never put her down, even though she was wrong. It is Jin-gook who is watching her grow, especially with her unconditional love relationship with her friend Beak-hee. Sam-dong has not been seen witnessing any of this. These are the things which are important in Korean Dramas. Sam-dong is still growing up.

Really? Jin Gook helped her? Jin Gook changed her? When???

Jin Gook went to debut for 200 DAYS. And Hye Mi was changed at that time. And who was there for her? Who? Wasn't it SONG SAM DONG? I don't understand why you don't admit this. But Hye Mi said that Teacher Kang and Sam Dong were the one who helped her, who changed her. She became today because of Sam Dong and Teacher Kang.

Both Jin Gook and Sam Dong understand her very well. But Sam Dong is the one that encouraged her when she had none. Sam Dong is the one who practiced and sang with her. Sam Dong is the one that she thought about when she was writing the song. Sam Dong is the one she thought at first. Is that clear enough?

Why didn't Jin Gook keep her when she was going to USA? Why did only Sam Dong do that? Don't tell me that Jin Gook was noble. Don't tell me that you weren't selfish in love. Why did she think about Sam Dong while she was standing next to Jin Gook?

OMMG OMMMMMG. WAHHHH. NO. Gook-ah!!
I'm still holding out hope that maybe the cameraman was confused:) and focused on Sam-dong when he meant to focus on Jin-gook. Hopefully. But it's probably a lost cause...

-sniiff-
I actually kept my tears in [...-whew- self restraint...] for the WHOLE SINGING/CRYING SCENE. I was on the brink with watery eyes and all for so long.. But then that five-second scene with Baek-hee's mom? I SOBBED MY HEART OUT. I don't even know whyy.. It was just the saddest thing. I didn't even realize it was the abalone box at first...and then I read it on Dramabeans and I cried even moreTTT.TTT

omg i never really cared much for this drama i just loved reading the recaps because of KSH but now after reading this particlar recap I started to tear up & its the first time EVER when reading a recap I shed some water works :( lol I really felt for Baekhee the poor girl..i love her moments with the teacher & for some reason why do i feel like the teacher went through the same thing i mean she & the rejects teacher was talking about it she mention about remember last time..soo i wonder if she experienced it as well it could be the reason why she was all bitchy like in the beginning...
anyways like I said I totally teared up at all of Baekhee's moments & especially when she asked Hyemi to sing for her...gosh what a frickkin' tearjerker :'(
I wouldn't mind now if she is the "K" &i was thinking about the full circle thing too, it'll totally make sense & very symbolic. The only one I don't know whom had the pendent would be Jason..he never had it right?

Oh &I must applaud Dream High writers & PDs for actually going this route &did the sexual assault charge. I mean everyone knows that the casting couch scenario really DOES happen yet everyone always wants to sugar coat it & make the female look like she's the cause of it but Dream High actually going for it & doing it was just wonderful I love it. It brings the real issue to light.

Ending I love..I'm totally hoping that it's Sam-mi in the end :) SD deserves the girl, while JG gets his daddy. I mean come on its gotta be fair, JG can't get the girl & his daddy..leaving SD with nothing..
plus KSH is the lead actor & lead actor like ALWAYS gets the girl (unless the girl died or the lead actor died then those dramas are different)..lol

Usually K-dramas are so predictable and we can tell who the heroine ends up with. In this drama, they did a good job of making us guess.
In the beginning, I was totally guessing it would totally be Jinguk. They have a 'past' together, he met her first, he was able to help her a lot. I then only started believing it HAD to be Samdong because he was casted for the lead role (which I had only known just a day or two ago!). and it IS Samdong. They had me guessing good.
I'm happy it's Samdong. For one, he's so hot in the short hairstyle and so cute with the satoori accent. Secondly, he's always been there for her.

such goodness in this episode!

I really want to see how Samdong would react!!!
I can't wait for ep 15, although it looks like it might be a heartbreaking one..

on the previous episodes where hye mi went to the province to seek sam dong, i had already an inkling that these two will end up together so much so that the villain baek hee had changed her image . so what else could we think but she and jingook will be together in the end just like other dramas i had watched. there is always a twist in the end.nice drama.

If this were written by the Hong sisters, maybe the one that Hye Mi was looking at is Oh Hyuk. He has come to be a father figure to her, and given that daddy comes back in ep 15, maybe that's a way to provide the giggles for a bit before the angst starts.

Anyway, like what many of you have said, high school romances don't last, but it would still be nice if she ends up with Sam Dong. A chance encounter in HM and JG's childhood shouldn't have so much bearing in the romance department, as this series actively seeks to demonstrate that though fate and talent may be important, it is the choices you make in life that makes who you are.

OK, I concede then.. I have to agree with you: "as this series actively seeks to demonstrate that though fate and talent may be important, it is the choices you make in life that makes who you are." That made a lot of sense, but I am going down with the sunk JinMi ship. Heh.

I bawled, I laughed and I squealed. oh Dream High, why so good?

the last scene really had me stewing in my seat. I was silently praying that it'd be Samdong when she spotted them in the hallway, and then Hallelujah!!! It was!! omg, I am so ridiculously happy right now. I've been rooting for Sam-mi ever since ep 3 but can't help but feel that the ship was going to sink. when i was ready to accept the fact that HM was going to end up with JG , the ep 11came, which opened up to a lot of new possibilities and I was like "oh maybe it will happen" and now, omg, i can't believe it's actually happening!!! yes!!!

My heart kinda bled for JG though. he is one awesome boy and he deserves happiness too, but it just wasn't meant to be with HM. someone at soompi mentioned that love is all about timing and JG just wasn't there at the right moments (not his fault of cos), and i believe he realised that too. well don't worry honey, at least you finally won over your dad's love…. and there's always Hye-sung….or me :P

I cried a lot of tears for BH. I've always believe that she was redeemable and in this ep, she proved me right. I am so proud that she was able to admit her wrongdoings and braved up the courage to right them, even when she was at her lowest. I knew that she and HM will eventually rekindle their friendship, but i did not expect the emotional impact it would bring to both the characters and myself. gawd i couldn't stop sobbing at the taxi scene. sigh, friendship is so sweet~

I did hope in the beginning that SD will become K, but now I'm perfectly content if it turns out to be BH, in fact, I'd prefer her to be K than SD. Dream High put a lot of emphasis on passion, determination, hard work and support, that's why i thought it'd be more apt for BH to become K. you know, to spread the message that anyone, even if he/she had hit rock bottom, can still rise up and succeed.

The sexual harassment arc was dealt surprisingly well in DH. the writers not only brought up the issue, but also highlighted the illogical, but sadly realistic, public perceptions on it and the impacts it has on the victim(s). and for that, I give them my respect. I don't think it will instigate any major changes, but it's better than nothing.

By the way, anyone else replay that scene where JG was beating the heck out of that sorry excuse for a human being? You go JG!!! slam down that son of a bitch. oh how i wish Jin-man was there with his baseball bat.

thanks for the recap.

I love this show! Every episode makes me go "Ooh, this one's my FAVORITE!"... until the next one makes me change my mind, lol. :-D My hopes for it are raised so high that I'm afraid of it disappointing me with the ending. So PLEASE, Show... Don't. Do. It.

I never liked Baek-hee's mum, but to be fair, I don't think that box of abalone was COMPLETELY empty. Slow down the video where the sleazy Prez is being wheeled out of the hospital and mum is part of the crowd of reporters waiting to meet him. The contents spill out just before she knocks it on his head and begins to throttle him (unless those were all empty shells, ha ha ha). The box didn't seem full, to be sure. Maybe she's already used some of them before the news about her daughter came out.
