Two movie releases precede Hyun Bin’s military service
by javabeans
With military service looming and his current drama earning him raves, looks like Hyun Bin will be leaving civilian life with a bang. Not only is he constantly in the news for Secret Garden — whether it’s for his sparkly tracksuit fashions, his song on the OST, or the general fan-love for his quirky character — he’s also got two movies coming out in quick succession: Late Autumn and Love Me, Love Me Not.
Both movies are looking at February releases, coming on the heels of his drama role. Filmed in Seattle, Late Autumn co-stars Tang Wei and is a remake of a famed 1966 Lee Man-hee film of the same name, which deals with an intense three-day love affair between a woman inmate who is granted special leave for several days and a man on the run. It was initially aiming for a November release, but obviously that didn’t pan out.
Then there’s Love Me, Love Me Not, a small-scale melodrama that co-stars Im Soo-jung. It’s about a married couple on the cusp of divorce; after five years as spouses, the wife falls for a new man and tells her husband she’s moving out. Hyun Bin’s character, on the other hand, is a man who is extremely considerate of his wife. The film is described as a “hide and seek of the heart” between the couple, and will release on February 24.
Hyun Bin is currently drawing notice for the news that he has applied to serve with the Marines during his two years of service, which will begin in March.

is the marines in korea the same like the marines in the US? sort of a more elite group in the military?

Kinda, I suppose.
I'm not Korean, but when I was there I had a guy friend who was in the Marines. Almost everytime the topic comes up in a conversation and he lets slip that little tidbit, then suddenly and miraculously -- to the girls at least -- it was as if light shines out of his arse or something.

I have a question, maybe sounds a little stupid but, are the marines tougher? In which way are they different? Because in my country is the army and the…army that is on the sea (sorry, I don’t want to use a word that might be wrong). But I don’t know about marines. The only thing I know is that they are also on the sea, etc.
2 years…but on the bright side, he is leaving with his name on the top: successful drama, 2 movies, he leaves us something to remember him until he comes back. Well, I’ll be waiting.

Well...I'm a Canadian citizen and I don't know how it works in Korea. BUUUT in the U.S. its military has 5 branches:
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and the Coast Guard
They each have different roles they play:
The Marines are an attacking force,
the Army is an occupying force,
the Air Force works with aircraft,
the Navy works in the ocean,
and the Coast Guard protects US coastlines.
Basically, the Marines conduct force projection and various operations as needed. They are mostly combat oriented as well as the army BUT it's really intense AND in smaller numbers, apparently. So it's tougher to get in, I guess...and harder. Therefore they're the attacking force and have more combat training...
The Army though conducts major land and airborne operations. Their force is in numbers so more people can get in, I imagine...Their missions (for example) could be to stop small countries from being overrun or they might go to war (for any reason these days) in an enemy country, usually w/ foot soldiers, tanks, helicopters, and sometimes airplanes. In general, they're the occupying force and deal in general combat.
Now, the Navy conducts maritime and air operations. Honestly, from my observations they mostly work in the oceans, like on ships, boats...etc. The Navy in general protects the oceans and coast lines (along with the Coast Guard). So, they're a fighting force on ships, you know, on water...lol :) Oh yeah the SEALs do work in the air and on water they're an exception...
Umm....as for the Air Force well that self-explanatory (it's like the Navy BUT specialized in the air) and the Coast Guard..well protecting the oceans and coastlines.
I don't know much about the Air Force and the Coast Guard but I'm sure that's nothing that a little google-ing on your part can't fix. Again...it might not be the same branches or system in S.K. .

Since no one else has replied about the Korean marines here, I asked my boyfriend (who yes, is Korean), and he said that the marines in SK are a bit different than here in the US.
For starters, my cousin was a Marine in the US for a while and I have a friend who used to be in the Navy. While both tried to claim their branch was superior, they eventually did concede that neither one was really "harder" or more "hardcore" than the other one.
When I asked my boyfriend about the Korean marines, he said that they are more like a special forces type of branch. They still do lots of training like any other soldier, but... somehow it's harder? More intense? I asked him if it meant that they could kill people easier and he laughed and said no, but he did compare them to Navy Seals versus the "regular" Navy units.
I hope that helps! To compare them to the US branches of the military is more like comparing apples and oranges, the differences aren't exactly the same.

Ok, so I tell my students about this korean drama I've been watching. They're all ears when I tell them about the funny things that happen when they switch. They're curious, so we watch parts of ep. 17. There are tears and questions. So we watch all of ep. 18. These are 5th graders in a private school (and are really innocent) and you should have seen them hit the deck when Binnie went in for the slow kiss. They can't wait for the 'sparkly tracksuit guy' to get his memory back. There was a huge ahhh when Ra Im woke up and there were rose petals in her room!
Anyway, I showed them the above picture and they couldn't believe it's the 'sparkly tracksuit guy'!
Amazing time to join the army and in the marines!
