Eye candy galore: My Princess’s press conference

Gahh, what a beautiful cast: The lead foursome of MBC’s My Princess came to their press conference on January 3 looking pretty damn gorgeous.

The Korean drama industry has its fair share of lovelies, but I don’t think I’m the only one who finds My Princess particularly blessed in the looks department, particularly with lead couple Kim Tae-hee (love the tiara!) and Song Seung-heon — although supporting leads Ryu Soo-young and Park Ye-jin are hardly looking shabby themselves.

(I’m trying not to get too excited about My Princess — too late? — because a pretty cast and a Cinderella-fantasy premise are hardly enough to guarantee a good drama. In fact, I seem to recall the last time I was wowed by a cast’s good looks was back with My Fair Lady… and we all know how that turned out. Did I just dredge up unpleasant memories for you? Apologies.)

The press conference was held on Monday afternoon at Seoul’s Lotte Hotel in the Sogong-dong neighborhood.

Song and Kim have attracted quite a lot of buzz since they were cast (though to be honest, it’s more for their looks and fame than, say, their acting resumés). Kim Tae-hee admitted, “I did worry about whether I’d be suited for it,” because she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to do the Lee Seol character justice.

But really, I think Kim’s forte is romantic comedy; she has a very likable real-life persona (in my opinion), and I always want to like her roles a lot more than I do. It’s when she’s trying to project herself as a serious actor or a tough type that she is hard to connect with, but it seems she’s been cast well here.

Song plays a foreign diplomat and the sole heir to a chaebol corporation, landing him in firm Prince Charming territory. (I’m really hoping he can find something to add to this oft-used stock character — perhaps a dormant talent for comedic acting? I do remember him from way back in the day when he did the sitcom Three Men, Three Women, but it’s been forever and a day since he’s done comic fare.)

Song said of his co-star, “To be working with Kim Tae-hee, who many people recognize to be one of Korea’s top beauties, is something I’m happy and thankful for. What will be important when the drama airs is whether we are able to display good rapport with each other.”

My Princess will be Song’s first drama in two years, since he headlined the epic-tragic-melodrama East of Eden, which was both hugely popular and sort of a hot mess of writing confusion. In Eden, he played a dark type of character, and he said at this press conference, “I’ve wanted to try a light character at least once.” He explained, “When I got the script of My Princess, it was the brightest drama since my debut sitcom, Three Men, Three Women, and I thought viewers would respond well to it.”

This drama also marks Ryu Soo-young’s comeback; he’d only recently returned from military service, and this is his first project since Lawyers of Korea back in 2008. He said, “Initially I was glad because this was my comeback, and I enjoyed this work. After a little time had passed, my sense for acting wasn’t coming back to me quickly, so I lost my way a bit. I thought that this wasn’t a place I ought to be. When people are hungry and can’t do what they want to do, they realize even more what a precious place this is.”

Ryu recently dropped 10 kg, though not explicitly through diet or training regimens. Over the course of a recent trip, during which he took the time for personal reflection, he walked as much as 240 km without transportation, and the weight came off.

He plays a professor at the university attended by Kim Tae-hee’s character.

Park Ye-jin recently chopped off her hair for this drama, and said, “It makes me think of What Happened In Bali. Before that, I’d played some shabby characters, but in Bali the character was assertive and frank, so this drama makes me think of it even more.”

Park’s character is the daughter to executive secretary of Daehan Group, a large corporation, and works as the director of a museum. Described as a highly ambitious femme fatale, she chucks her first love (Ryu Soo-young) and uses Song Seung-heon, while acting the formidable rival for heroine Kim Tae-hee.

Park admitted that her role in Bali gave her trouble “because I couldn’t understand her…but I thought I’d like to try a character like her after I’d had more experience. There are differences between them, but this character has basic similarities with her.” She doesn’t consider the role as a villainous one, saying instead that her character works extremely hard, and said that she felt (on behalf of her character) a bit misjudged by everyone labeling her the baddie.

The drama premieres Wednesday.

Wow I think Kim Tae Hee should stick to rom com as well...she looks adorably pretty here...if her character is anything like how she is in the pics, I think this drama is gonna work. Song should smile more really...he looks so much more handsome when he does. I actually predict that this is gonna be a hit! lol. Good for jb.....well I hope for gf's sake that Dream High is good too....lol. Then again I look forward to jb vs gf round 2. lol.

I know. I have always loved Song Seung Hun's looks but i actually kissed his face on my laptop screen when I saw him smiling. I know I shouldn't be too impatient since the two leads aren't exactly known for their acting. But just can't wait. I've been waiting for something like this to come out since Goong (and no Goong S was not good enough for me). Now if only Goong 2 would come out I would be satisfied.

I love all four but recently I kind of sick looking at actors and actresses who shave their jaws. Dont you feel like these ppl look the same from one another. Similar V-Shape face with V jaw and chin... I guess the only person who is still not shaving their jaws is Won Bin. Love him in The man from nowhere.

Yeah. It's really obvious that Hyun Bin lost a lot of weight. Heck compare his body to 2008's World's Within. He's still attractive though, but I do wish he would gain a little weight.

The CLOTHES!!! I saw that still of SSH in that well tailored suit and I was salivating. One guarantee we all have since this is about the royal family - good quality of clothes! Yay! As much as I love Secret Garden, Hyun Bin's ridiculous tracksuits, even if they are hand stitched and are from Italy, just don't do it for me.

this is true of SSH. i never really share the majority's opinion of his good looks, but he does know how to dress. he [or his stylist] chooses suits that fit him perfectly.

i also never find RSY attractive, but his post-army look does give him a different aura. i like what i see.

i'm craving for an old-formula of cinderella-esque RomCom and i'm putting my cravings on this one.

Ayyyy! Finally someone who doesn't find SSH appealing. I also am not much moved by TKH, so much so that I thought it was really a stretch when Jung Joon Ho's character in Iris spilled some liquid from a drink or food into his sunbae's lap because he found KTH's beauty so mesmerizing. But I see that a lot of people find her (and him) quite the eye candy. I don't get it but to each his/her own. :)

Hahahaha me too, and you know? I also have a good vibe about his drama, the cast and the premises are promising. Also Dream High vs My Princess, is going to be awesomeness, I mean we all have to be exited about JB and GF round two, it would be great if it was life as a podcast, THAT would be a smash in ratings hahaha. besides if both dramas end up disappointing, we would come here for the entertainment of that fight.

When Song smiles he reminds me of some other actor I can't just pin point who...

ah i don't really like Park Yejin's new haircut, too short to my liking. She's still gorgeous, but she has this small sweet face so she doesn't get the 'badass' look like Kim Soyeoin in IRIS.

Ryu Soyeong looks great, and perfect..usually if someone lost weight drastically looks weird, but this look is perfect for him, showing his sharp facial feature, I like.

I never like SSH & KTH ( no particular reason, just taste ), so..no comment for them.

Totally agree with Park Ye Jin's hairstyle. It suits her, making her face pixie and not gaunt like in her long straight hair. Made her look younger too. In the first few pics JB posted, she looked a lot older than KTH

I know. My boss was crazy about BYJ, but now she left him for Joo Jin Mo.

But SSH is so mighty fine!

I badly want this drama to be good. Please writers, make a good storyline, build captivating characters, I don't really mind the acting as long as those things are good enough.

i think she gained a little bit of weight- maybe 5-10 pounds-(she's still really skinny though, but now she looks healthier) and maybe that's why her eyes don't look so huge anymore?

I just watched the 5 min trailer and omg, this shiz is gonna be so bad.

From what I can tell, KTH is gonna be fun or at least tolerable but SSH... wow, people weren't kidding when they said he couldn't act. I know I'm not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but seriously, I just don't think there's anything there other than pretty.

Still, this is gonna be my show after SG. I doubt it'll be as good, but hopefully it will at least be entertaining.

Kim Tae Hee is really shining in all these pics! I think a rom-com may really suit her. I can feel SSH being overshadowed by KTH already. (and how sucky must THAT feel. to be overshadowed by your female counterpart in acting.) I think it would be cool to have SSH play some rough, country bumpkin. one day Why does he always have to play the cool type of character? Maybe that's why he is so tiring to watch. I hope this drama shakes up SSH's character by making him a Starcraft addict or something.

(btw, my mom ended up loving East of Eden! =O )

Ryu soo young looks a lot like he did in Successful story of a bright girl, where he was a villain. I hope he remains a nice character throughout the drama.

Dear Reader, it pains me to say this but it has come to my knowledge that quite a number of ppl have taken to calling me by the unflattering name Mr Hand Towel.

After many sleepless nights and much internal turmoil, I have come to accept this dreaded name as an indication that I must change, and at once, or I will, indeed, morph into a hand towel in the near future. I have no wish to become a piece of cloth, no matter how functional it is.

I have made a few resolutions in accordance with the New Year.

I have been accused of being wooden in my expressions. So henceforth, I will impress everyone with my wide range of emotions: sad, happy, shocked, sad, angry, sad, happy, surprised and sad. Note that SAD is oft rpeated as this is my BEST emotion.

I will initiate major swoondom in Korea and the universe by removing my starched and ironed collared shirts and revealing my fine, honed, muscular (but not too much), hairless (but still manly) chest at regular intervals. (WARNING: Not for the faint-hearted. Mothers, cover your daughters' eyes.)

Hopefully, these will stay the Towelling Process. (Towelling here refers to the transformation of Human to Towel)

I am giving everyone fair warning - Mr Hand Towel I am not!
