Sohn Hyun-joo cast as Poseidon’s baddie
by javabeans
Upcoming maritime police drama Poseideon — starring newly army-discharged Eric, new father Kim Kang-woo, and Thirst’s Kim Ok-bin — has its baddie, and it’s Sohn Hyun-joo, a familiar drama face who’s probably best known for funny ajusshi roles.
In Poseidon, he’ll play the man in charge of the elite Poseidon team who trains his men “ruthlessly.” His character is described as heartless and ambitious, who keeps his attention focused as much on his own career advancement as he does on his team.
I look forward to it, because Sohn is someone who acts frequently and is always good, who can be quirky at the same time that he’s being poignant. Sohn was most recently in the weekend drama Neighbor Enemies, and also had a Drama Special episode, although I know him better from last year’s family comedy Sons of Sol Pharmacy. There’s a line in that drama where his mother refers to his purity of spirit and his big, innocent “cow eyes” — which is a hilarious thing to say but also kind of true. Yet he’s also just as great playing eccentric bastards (What’s Up Fox) and mean bastards (A Rosy Life). I love what he can do with characters to give them his own twist.
Also cast in the drama: singer-turned-actors U-Know Yunho and Jeon Hye-bin, as well as the ubiquitous Kim Gab-soo. Poseidon is planning for broadcast in the first half of 2011.

he was great as the awkward jin pung in sons of sol pharmacy.
i really want to watch kim kang woo in this, i'm sure he'll be awesome (like he always is!). eric is okay, and you can always count on kim gab soo to deliver. just incredibly iffy about yunho...

Sohn Hyun-joo!! Awesome news. I couldn't agree with you more. He is a great actor. He can be so funny or innocent or mean (truly versatile). He is so endearing in his roles.

I really enjoy this actor, where I've seen him more from his older works. I haven't really kept up with his newer dramas.
Though I'm a bit half-and-half about this drama. Yunho is a good entertainer when it comes to musical stages. Sadly, no matter what others says, I cringed at his acting in HTTG.
But this drama has SHJ and KGS! GAH. As long as YH is not the main lead, I'll watch this for Gab Soo.

I recently watched How to Meet a Perfect Stranger and he was hilarious in it. I don't if I'll be watching Poseidon though.

How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor!! I liked him in that too! Side-note: I actually didn't really like Park Shi-hoo in that drama because I found Kim Seung-woo's character really charming later on in the series. [SPOILER] Too bad, he lost the girl.

OMG, I'm so bitter about the fact Kim Seungwoo got sidetracked in the latter half of the drama.

WOW! Adored him in My Rosy Life with the late Choi Jin Shil. He's really an impressive actor. Can't wait to see him play the hateable character again.

I love him as the ajusshi from What’s Up Fox. His relationship in that drama, heck him alone in that drama, was the draw for me. He is hilarious, so I'm sad to hear he's going to be a bad guy. But I'm happy for him so HWAITING!

wow! this brings back fond memories of "The sons of sol pharmacy house" to those who haven't watch it yet, I truly recomend it!!!
"spoilers alert"
There was one episode where Sohn Hyun-joo's character is buying a diamon ring which at first I thought was for his soon to be wife, but he actually gave it to his mom since he promised her a ring when he was little. That scene when the mom was crying I was crying along her, and I was thinking if I ever have a son I want my son to be like him.

What a coincidence! Just last night i was crying my eyes and heart out while re-watching Love Letter and this morning I see Father Peter on this site.
I have always liked this actor ever since seeing him in Love Letter where he ably played the uncle-priest Father Peter to would-be-priest Andrea (beautifully played by Jo Hyun Jae).
I know SHJ is a prolific actor, giving life to a variety of onscreen characters but no matter what role he takes on (goodie or baddie), I will always remember him as the kind-hearted Father Peter who saved his nephew Andrea from the evil witch masquerading as his aunt.

His cameo in Jejoongwon is one of the best I've ever seen. So brief, so searing.

Ooh, a bad guy. I've only seen Sohn Hyun-joo in What's Up, Fox? and a little of How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor, but both of his characters were likeable there so I'm interested to see how he pulls this off.

thanks for the article. I can only remember him playing a kind hearted/good character. Can't wait to see him turn baddie in Poseidon.
Only 1 baddie so far? Should we expect at least one of the main casts to be another baddie?

<3 him. He is so versatile. He is one of those actors who can really play a lot of roles: bad, good, goofy, innocent...and all with depth. <3 him best in Sons. <3 <3
