Philip Lee, a real-life chaebol (sort of)
by javabeans
girlfriday: | So have you heard that Philip Lee is some real-life chaebol? |
javabeans: | Yeah, apparently his dad is this global businessman. Not strictly a chaebol but they’re stretching the term (of course). Here’s a picture of his gigantor house in the U.S. (But aren’t McMansions a dime a dozen here?) |
girlfriday: | So did his daddy buy his way into the industry? |
javabeans: | I heard rumors that he was connected, hence the notable role in Legend as his debut. |
girlfriday: | Well that explains visibility versus (lack of) acting talent. |
javabeans: | Yes. I wonder if Lee Jia is a chaebol too! |
girlfriday: | Hur hur. |
javabeans: | I mean, he’s not BAD in Secret Garden… |
girlfriday: | It was funny when he wanted to beat up Joo-won. |
javabeans: | Is this Episode 14? |
girlfriday: | Yup. |
javabeans: | I guess I’ll get there when I get there. (SIGH.) That was a pointed sigh. |
girlfriday: | There’s a good kiss, if that motivates you any. |
javabeans: | Do you think I’m that cheap? |
girlfriday: | Yes. |
javabeans: | Sadly that’s not enough this time. Normally I’d cave like a bear in winter. |
girlfriday: | Your bitterness is making your puns bad. |
javabeans: | Puns are always bad. |
girlfriday: | They are the lowest form of humor. |
javabeans: | So anyway, apparently this is all old news becoming new news again (though I missed it the first time) — there was an MBC “Success Stories” documentary in 2008 that featured clips of his monstrous home and his CEO dad, who runs some global IT business. |
girlfriday: | I missed it the first time too. So it’s new news to us! |
javabeans: | Though I did know he studied business and was getting his masters when he decided to break into the biz. |
girlfriday: | As the hot guy with good hair? |
javabeans: | I wonder what he’d look like with the army buzz. |
girlfriday: | I think he’s like Samson. Shave the hair, lose all powers. |
javabeans: | If he loses his hotness, he might have to learn real acting, though. |
girlfriday: | That’s a sad story. |
javabeans: | But good acting’ll make him hot again! |
girlfriday: | It’s almost like math… |
javabeans: | But without numbers. |
girlfriday: | The only kind I like. |

I don't find any of these three attractive (especially not KSW, I find that one even repulsive), but Philip Lee is enthralling. I dunno.
Not so much in SG, yeah, but I first saw him in The Slingshot (great drama btw) and he was a treat.

KSW is just plain repulsive to me too. YUCK.
Phillip Lee is kinda strange looking at times and same for SJS even though lurve him to death! Phillip Lee I can do without though it IS nice to have a guy in a Korean drama whose character has lived in America that can actually speak English! Trying to watch say Love Story in Harvard where there are Korean actors trying to act like they can speak English is really awkward, especially if their character has supposedly been living in the US since they were a kid...
Now if only Phillip Lee could act it would be perfect!

PL may not be your cup of tea, but he definitely is an above-average looking guy.
Otoh, he does look a bit weird due to the shape of his eyes, as well as the fact that they set a bit close together.
Also his purported nose job doesn't help.

Agreed. I don't doubt his charisma though. He could be silent all episode in Legend, and you'd still notice him.
Sadly, I dislike his hair.
I can't think of the actor's name right now, but if Phillip Lee cut his hair and kept the stache, he'd look like the actor from Zia's Laughter mv.

Too many Asians live in these types of homes abroad. And drive luxury cars.
Location, location, location.
Some of these are located way out in the suburbia boon-docks, so what's a $500K shoebox in a densely-populated hip city or Asia = the same $500K can actually buy one of these 10-BR, - kitchen monstrosities (if the location is way out there).
If you're taking this magnitude of abode and same land area set in a prime district. Then yes, perhaps he's chaebol-rich because it would likely start $6 million and up in any city that has designer locations on the global map.
To each their own. Contentment is key to zen.

I agree x100... I don't know too much about Virginia (that's what the caption says in his the picture of his house), but location is key. You could get a humongous house in some states in the south but go to places like New York or nice Cali neighborhood,,,you'll get a dinky house for the same cost...

As a person who lives in Maryland, because I can't afford Virginia, his house is probably pretty expensive. Keep in mind, a lot of politicians and the like who work in DC, live in Virginia. That being said, I wonder if they want to adopt a daughter???
girlatsea
December 29, 2010 at 3:28 PM
I'm from northern Virginia! And I can tell you first hand that those kind of houses ARE a dime a dozen around here (maybe not elsewhere.) And they all cost well over a million each. Which confirms that his family must be pretty loaded.
Now, I'm curious as to where in VA that house is located... Not that I'm going to stalk or anything...
girlatsea
December 29, 2010 at 3:30 PM
Oh, I didn't mean that the house its self was a dime a dozen. I meant the price. Those houses are cheaper the more southern you go or the more far out in the country you go.
chris
December 29, 2010 at 7:25 PM
Well if the house is indeed in Virginia then that house would indeed cost a fortune. I know so.
In fact, even without showing his family's fortune, Philip Lee does look and act posh. Oozes with classiness. :)
He'll look equally good & appealing with or without his long hair.

I swear, arrogant really doesn't mean a whole lot when you're talking about a public figure. I know of ONE famous person and people talk about him all the time like he's a butthole, but really it's 'cause they come up to him in Wal-Mart or where-ever and ask for his autograph when he's trying to buy laxatives or whatever for his mama, and he's like screw you! Or he's with his family (and since he's on tour all the time that's rare) and people want to take pictures of him and all he wants is to eat with his family. I don't care what anyone says about a famous person, 'cause 9 times out of 10 it's because they got blown off while they were trying to do something else. I know the dude is cool, but he just can't be "On" all the time. It's unrealistic to expect that from anyone.

Honestly, I get that you guys don't have to like anything/everyone but this continued snarkiness (and negativity) is getting really old. I think he has a lot of screen presence and I liked him in Legend - he convinced me plenty with his portrayal of the Blue Dragon. As for the character he's playing in SG, have you though that maybe he is just interpreting the character as he was given? If he really, truly had bought his way into the industry, do you not think he'd start with a leading role? How about you give him a chance to grow as an actor before you label him pertly as a "no talent?"
And to reiterate, snarkiness is fun in some instances but when that begins to be your trademark for each and every single thing you talk about, it's just a turn off.

Ha,ha, I love their banter and all of the snarkiness. It's a refreshing change from the normal articles full of nothing but fangirliness (if that's even a word). In the real, mature world people have differences of opinions about many things and should be free to express them.
If you are looking for pages and pages of nothing but praise-even when it's not deserved, but because you like a particular actor/actress then this may not be the blog for you.

I agree! I read the articles on this delicious blog often, as well as the comments (which sometimes are just as entertaining as the articles!). Yet I've noticed recently that there has been an increase in negative nellies upright criticizing JB and GF. I might not always agree with them (but hell, they must drink some awesome juice because I usually do and crack up while reading), but uh... this is not MY blog or YOUR blog! If it really bothered me so much, I'd just stop reading it! They don't have to write to satisfy you, they write this blog because they want to. They write what they want, how they want, and when they want. That's the idea of a personal blog.

It just goes to show that you really can't please everyone. JB and GF can get really bold with their writings, and these spark some interesting 'exchanges' of opinions among the readers - as evident in the recent 2-thread debate on SG - and also make the two prone to having detractors.
I do enjoy this new thread format of JB & GF. And the banter and the snarkiness? FUN! ;) With the wit and creativity of these two, expect the formats of their posts to evolve from time to time.
Oh well, there will always be readers who will have a different sense of humor, have lower tolerance for twisted fun, or have the itching need for constant debate. Or have the masochistic tendency to expose themselves to stuff that they don't really enjoy... just like what I did when I endured MSOAN up to episode 10. ;) (Curiosity made the cat suffer.)
Aaand... oh yeah! I'm a Philip Lee fan. ;) He's HOT! Not so sure of his acting chaps, but he's HOT. Well, depending on his dedication to acting, I think he can improve his skills. Nothing is unattainable if you want it so bad. (So if I want him bad enough, will I... hmmm.) ;)

Ever since the site became rather known in the net I've read some blogs either praising/bashing JB to high heavens on a personal level. It's sad, really. I think they tend to forget that, well, this IS a blog and not some formal news outlet or summat that does not have any business of sharing their opinions at all..
And also weird. I mean, I tend to disagree with a lot of what the girls say here (esp. with LJA >_<) but hey, it's not like they're sending subliminal messages to my brain saying I should agree with them 100%.

This is DRAMABEANS: DECONSTRUCTING KDramas and Kpop culture.

all right, all right, let's break it up, people.
listen, we all know JB and GF can get a little snarky. mean, to some people. but we exercise a level of tolerance for snark here that is ridiculously high, just because that is the nature of this blog. apart from snark, we also bring a lot of critical thought and dialogue to the table. now if at the end of the day, you don't like how things are run, you best find another blog to go to, hun. if this is crossing the line for you, then we get that. but at when all's been said and done, it's still their blog. sorry.

Hmm, I really liked him in The Slingshot. I think he has a very 'easy', natural sexiness about him (he was sex on legs without having to try at all in that drama!), as well as some demanding screen presence. I also think he looks very good different from other actors, and yeah, I really like him.
Also, I'm very surprised to hear that he spoke 'no Korean', as he put it, when he came to Korea, because his accent is very native, like Han Ye Seul and Lee Jia's (and not like Daniel Henney's, lol). Perhaps he was just lacking the vocabulary. I notice that a lot of foreign-born Koreans have a stellar accent and grammar when they first come here, but they're terribly lacking in vocabulary - can't read novels or newspapers, get stuck on some unusual vocab when talking, etc. - but they can catch up pretty quick with enough exposure that gets their vocabulary up to par. Perhaps he was like that.

Again thanks to JB and Gf for saying all the things I love to hear... whether we agree or not ;)
And I totally agree! I loved him in Slingshot. Now that SG is a completely different story of... H.A.M.
Oh and Lee Jia... Is it me or is something wrong with her face? I zoomed through ATHENA and am liking it so far, though I really don't feel connected to any characters besides Jung-woo, Sung-cheol and (hilarious) Ki-soo. Jia's character should be significant at this point but NOPE. I do give her credit for her stunts. She's doing great with proving that her character should be where she is, however I like that darkness to her character and her scenes with Jung-woo aren't even. They don't mesh. But I hold out hope...No I'm kidding, I don't but I think she won't matter much so all is well. I always think she's passable, like Philip (in SG). Limited scenes is key.

He DID have the funniest line in Ep 14about beating up JW, but it was so fast I almost missed it!
I agree that he has a presence on screen and a beatiful physique, but I can't tell if his Korean is any good, or not.
If I told him he had a beautiful body, would he hold it against me?
Let's not count the fact that he is rich against him.

I don't find him attractive, and he looks extra old in SG, bad actor too. Ep 14 should be watched ASAP, it's good.

Now that's a gloomy looking mansion. Unwelcoming.
I'm only interested in Houdini's mansion, and his promise to his wife after his death and it's linked to my bdate. I was invited to go up there for Halloween but my friends were too spooked to allow me to go. People freaking out talking about the spirit world. It's amusing. Who here know what I'm really talking about?

I don't mind him in SG - he's like a little haven of calm and relative maturity amongst the nut jobs, and every comedy needs a straight man.
Don't know about his acting in Legend, but "Let's beat him up" in episode 14 was delivered in a nice, deadpan way. He might surprise us yet.

Waves a good old Colonial banner at ya! I knew it was GW from the alumni rag talking about the endowment, but didn't want to mention it. BTW, moving to Korea may be the only way to get the alumni office from calling asking for $$ 8-)
Ok, seriously people - that house is pretty danged big, but VA prices are probably 1/5 of what it would cost in CA. Location is everything.
STG is a nice enough company. I don't know what you have to do to rate as a chaebol but in the IT world, it's a nice company, mostly a government contractor - one of a bunch in the area.
And before anyone starts talking about "famous universities" GW is famous for a) being in downtown DC b) costing an arm and a leg (scholarships are your friend) c) having the hospital where R. Reagan was treated and d) the engineering school in particular is known as being pretty tough - back in the day they used to flunk out half the freshman. The Lee family isn't unusual in this area with so many family members going there. If you live around here, it's an excellent commuter school particularly for part-time students who are co-op-ping or whose employers pay for tuition - 3 members of my family are graduates (I'm Columbian College, the other 2 are SEAS).

Okay, I think I must have lower standards, but Philip seems quite hot to me- "Dark Elf" is right on the money! :)
And it helps that his character in SG is one of the consistent, grown-up characters who seems to do and say all the right things.
JB/GF, I admit the new format makes reading the news a little trickier. I like it, but the straight up news was a quicker browse and I imagine easier for you two as well... want to make sure you gals focus your awesome energy to your recaps!
:)
But can I say somewhat off-topic? You gals are da bombs for saying what you mean the way you mean it even if some rather brash, vocal people somehow find it insulting that you air your views on your blog that 'sours' theirs.
You should consider it a compliment that people are saying you have so much sway over the "opinion of the masses" that they're annoyed when you make statements they consider unfair. :)
Hope you, like others who are coming under the same assault, take it light-heartedly and continue to love doing what you do here in the name of passion-for-intelligent-kdrama-discussion!

Philip Lee, considering he's new to acting in a high stress and deliver environment, he's doing really well. He is perfect as the hot stunt master in Secret Garden. Yes, he is very beautiful, but I don't think anyone is complaining. Remember when Dennis Oh entered the scene because of good looks, lordy what a terrible actor. Philip is way out ahead compared to Dennis. And I notice when he's on screen, I'm interested. Not once during SG did I think he was bad in skills, just held back a little maybe, which could also be direction. I for one vote YES on Philip Lee.

Yeah, I also think that Philip Lee did/does a lot better than other rookies with no acting chops, like many idols, Dennis Oh, Daniel Henney, etc.... He may not be 'good', but he isn't painful to watch like many other good-looking people with good connections.

No, you got that wrong unnie.
His family threatened to disown him unless he broke up with me, but that's before his family actually met me. You know how loyal and wonderful Siwon is, so off course he refused to give me up.
But, I was raised with the notion that all honors are to be paid to your parents, and I refused to marry him without his parents blessing. I couldn't stand the thought that I would be the cause of the bad feeling between him and his parents.
But, when his parents actually met me, they were completely won over by my lethal combination of charm and adorableness! And now we are happily married! :)

Siwon actually lives at home with his parents right now. From what I've read, he's definitely chaebol status. Leeteuk said that Siwon's family is like one of the families from the BoF drama.
Boy definitely has his family money behind him. Even in Super Junior's debut days, he was running around in brand name clothing & accessories. While living in China, the SJM members said that if they go out to eat, Siwon pays :P.

I think he has grown a bit more manly looking in Secret Garden with the facial hair. In Legend, he looked really feminine. Back then, I even remembered which actress he looked like. Anyways, I thought he suited his mysterious character really well in Legend. I think what he lacks in acting, he sort of makes up a bit in screen presence, though by no means will I ever want to see him as the lead actor in anything.
At least he sounds natural speaking Korean! It is always weird to have Daniel Henney speak English so much in his works. Dennis Oh tries (mad props to him) but it sounds unstable.

I know that no one will probably believe me, but he's actually from Northern Virginia. I was told that his parents weren't rich when he was growing up (I have family in VA who knew him and his family), but I guess they were well-connected somehow. He wanted to be a star, so they sent him over to Korea and came back with a newly made face. I don't know if he's nice or not, but, it's kinda cool that I'm separated from Hyun Bin by 4 degrees!

Yeah, unfortunately. I don't remember what he looked like before (I only vaguely remember the before photo), but I do remember talk about how he'd had work done when he got back and that people (my family members, anyway) were shocked by his lips, nose, and eyes (perhaps more so because he wasn't ugly to begin with). I'm pretty sure that he was from somewhere in Fairfax, since that's where all the Korean people I know live, haha. But, I'm not 100% sure.
(Also, my mother knew the family as well, and when she heard him speak Korean in "Secret Garden" she was surprised, so I'm assuming that he wasn't so great when he was still living in the States)

i dont think he is that bad of an actor. He is still relatively new to the industry (he only has three dramas to credit atm) so it is understandable that he might not be the best actor. His acting isn't so horrible that i'd cringe and turn away from the comp screen, its lets just say acceptable.
I'm sure with more experience he would be a much better actor. I mean as much as I love Daniel Henney even though he has been in so many dramas his acting is still worse than Philip Lee's!! And at least Philip Lee has had more variety in characters (unlike some actors who are always type cast)
And although you may not like his appearance, he does not look plastic :(
so don't just write him off as a bad actor who won't make it far and plastic because you don't like the way he looks

anybody (middle class) in US can live in that home just depending on the location...cuz if u live in a house like that in the South, the houses are really cheap. But if he have a house like that in California, it's like in the million range, so I wouldn't call a person rich just by looking at their house cuz location is pretty significant in the price range!!!!
I don't really like Phillip...his acting is not that great to me nor does his looks... but I do wishes him the best in his career!
