Nearing its finish, Giant hits ratings high
by javabeans
SBS’s Giant continues to perform extremely well in the ratings on Mondays and Tuesdays, particularly as it heads to its finish next week. The Tuesday (November 30) episode recorded its highest numbers yet with a 32.7% rating.
Giant has performed solidly through its entire run, although for most of the time it had to contend with another strong competitor in the form of MBC’s historical series Dong Yi, with KBS struggling to claim some ground with series like My Country Calls, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Once Dong Yi moved out of the way, Giant has been able to increase upon its low-twenties ratings and surpass 30%.
Giant, which stars Lee Beom-soo, Park Jin-hee, Joo Sang-wook, and Hwang Jung-eum, will wrap up with its last two episodes next week.
Meanwhile, MBC’s Queen of Reversals pulled up a bit to double digits with a 10.8%. KBS’s Mary Stayed Out All Night, on the other hand, has been dropping viewers and recorded a 6.7% — and although I’m watching for the cute romantic bits, I’m not surprised, since the plot is seriously lacking. It’s a bummer, when you consider its potential-to-performance ratio.
We haven’t talked a whole lot about Giant on this site, but not because it’s a bad drama; from what I hear, it’s a pretty solid show, but at 60 episodes, eek!, I just don’t have the time for that kind of commitment. But here, have a few pretty pics:

It's been dragging a bit, but one of my bigger reasons to keep watching is Jo Pilyeon. Such a delicious bad guy, he's piled enemies episode after episode, and they couldn't bring him down until now. Just awesome.
(His diabolic laugh...!)
All in all, while I believe the extension has done more harm than good, it's been an interesting run, so I'm happy for its good numbers ^^

THIS IS MAY 2015 AND GIANT STILL PUTS MAJORITY of dramas to UTTER SHAME! It is so superior one would question how greatness could be written, acted and directed the SUPERIOR way. Want to know? GIANT! I braved my way to removing the 60-ep mentality and watching it anyway. But boy it sucked me into a dimension of action, quality and drama excellence. Thank you, Giant!

yeah I have a limit of 34 episodes (Really Really Like you) but that almost took a toll me because it is just too long. So yeah a 50 or 60? I might pass out. ^^
Congratulations though on Giant, I've read from fans that it is really a solid drama.

Giant will be the longest kdrama I've ever watched. I've not made it that far in a sageuk even. But it's been fantastic! Solid writing, solid acting, and Jo Pilyeon! OMG, I'll never forget that wicked laughter for as long as I live. He's so marvelously evil.
They just shouldn't have extended it. 50 would have been perfect.

Provided that the quality is good, I do not mind long dramas. Giant ends next week on a good run and it has been such a refreshing experience compared to the joke East of Eden of last year. I disagree with the no extension statement, felt the extra was necessary to completely tell the story based on where they were when the extension was called for. In addition, it brought in new viewers to this kdrama which was needed, as most of them came in a bit late after the Dong Yi odyssey. Plus it gave the IRIS 2 team the extra time needed to film their shots. Yes, there were some lags in the show, but it has been mostly consistent throughout in terms of what story they were telling.
Another asset to this drama apart from Jo Pil Yeon is their supporting cast. They were strong as well especially the eldest brother Lee Seung Mo, his acting was exceptional. I haven't even watched ep 58 raw as yet and just by looking on the pictures at soompi, I am affected where he is concerned.
When it ends, I will be happy because it was overall an enjoyable kdrama and will be ready & hopeful that IRIS 2 does not disappoint as they got adequate time to produce quality.

i've just finished watching dvd of giant. it was great compared to east of eden which have numerous violent scenes. one thing i like about giant, the violent scenes are just the ones related in their theme and that the villains was given the chance to reflect and change their character in the end. in east of eden, the woman (the nurse who swapped babies) put the law in her hands by tying the man he love for life (played by jo min ki) in the passenger seat of her car and committed suicide by driving till she reached a sea and let themselves drowned... felt pity because she added another sin to her previous crime of revenging just because she was rejected bu the man she loved most... tsk.. tsk..EOE (with 56 episodes) was showned here in the Phils. from Aug til Dec only. I think the network have to cut off some scenes unlike in QSD (with 62 episodes) which lasted for 7 months, with more 6 episodes than that of EOE.
It was my first time watching Park Sang Min, since none of his tv series is showned in our country. I find this guy's acting to be really exceptional and so with his younger version played by Kim Soo Hyung.
I believe my fave Joo Sang Wook really deserved the award he got from SBS 2010 Award... He really improved a lot. Lee Beom Soo"s great! Really made us cry. Park Ha Young and Hwang Jung Eum were both cuty and charming... oh! i love their singing styles, both cute...

Giant is a great drama , it proves to us that looks are important but not as acting skill , producing , directing ,and story line Logical realistic .
I agree that all the casts are acting excellent except a young actress as a youngest sister / singer , her skill is weak but she does not make me dislike her character .
I wonder how the ending will be , hopefully it will not ruin this drama .

I am with you there. The best looking cast ,that is the youngest sister, is the weakest . The rest of the cast are so good that it doesn't matter that she is not good at acting. The only problem I have with this drama is the women do not seem to age as time goes by and the men did. Still it had been a good run. Like you, I hope the ending will be just as good as the rest of the drama.

I don't know what it is about Giant. When I first gave it a try I thought it wasn't all that, but it still had something about it that kept me watching another episode and another and another. Now suddenly it's hit it's stride (I'm way back there in the episodes) and I can't get enough of it! I have to see what happens next! Just hope I can keep finding episodes with English subs.

I too, have greatly enjoyed Giant. It was just well written, well acted, well directed etc. I didn't end up watching East of Eden last year (and from what I've heard of it, it was a good decision) but I really wanted to watch a good epic, large scale, spanning decades type of drama this year and struck gold with Giant. Plus, for viewers like me who loved Lee Jung jae's bodyguard role in Sandglass (the guy who always looked after the agasshi ever since they were both young) the earlier episodes from around ep10-20 was like wish fulfillment. Since the bodyguard type guy, Kangmo actually gets the girl here.

^ What Taber said. For me too, this is the best kdrama I've ever seen. And I'm still in denial about it ending soon. There will never be another Giant. Ever.
I understand SBS wanted to celebrate their biggest success to date; Sandglass, by recreating another, similar to it, but not imitating it. They hired a truly talented and intelligent writer... and the Bad Family PD (who has a penchant for Gangster themes, black comedy and familial warmth) and we were given Giant. Yeah, it's something between Bad Family and Sandglass, but still manages to wholly be a truly unique beast, which is so very affecting and moving.
Giant created icons of its actors. Icons, who will go down in kdrama history. I'm not usually fussed by ratings, but I'm so glad these actors were seen by a majority audience so that these phenomenal characters can be remembered and cherished. In particular Park Sang-min as Seong-mo (the sunshine in mine and CPY's sky!), Jung Bo-seok as Cho Pil-yeon and Lee Beom-soo as 'Gangstah' Gang-mo.
I disagree about Hwang Jung-eum (Mi-joo) being a weak actress, but then again, I did ADORE her character. She does seem a little raw and unpolished, but she has a natural knack for entertaining, a larger-than-life screen presence, and her singing was evocative -- especially when singing the same jazzy trot songs she often belted out in her childhood, like Bidan Gudu *tear* and Lee Mija's Pure 19. I felt she did sufficient justice to Park Ha-youngs' Little Mi-joo.
The only one I felt any disappointment in was Park Jin-hee's Jung-yeon. Especially after Nam Ji-hyun's JY encompassed shades of Hye-rin (GHJ in Sandglass). But I'll hand it to her for trying, for being just as catty and for even trying to cry like NJH. I eventually warmed to her and came to appreciate her, too. I can't imagine anyone else having played JY now.
I'm still in denial about it ending, but judging by the setup towards the final episodes it's going to be an EPIC battle. So glad we still have Min Hong-ki on form.
I do have a niggling concern about a character who's been hanging about with Seong-mo, but hopefully that character will have little to no importance. Otherwise, I'm all Gung-ho about everything they've been doing so far.
Was the extension a good idea? Hell yes!

Oh and the whole deal with the actors 'not being good-looking' and stuff?
Are they kidding?
I couldn't peel my eyes away from them! This was one amazingly talented cast AND gorgeous to boot.
Lee Beom-soo's Gang-mo! *swoon* Micheal Corleone eat your heart out!
And Seong-mo were referred to as 'Handsome Bastard' (in his KSH form) but I couldn't agree more, Seong-mo, both young and old was truly a Handsome Bastard.
Even Kim Jung-hyun was sexy as hell in his retro animal print attire, as was smarmy asswipe Min-woo (and people said Joo Sang-wook can't act, hah!)... heck, even Lee Deok-hwa was eye candy.
And hey, enough about the couples pictured above, this couple ruled them all! http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Giant/1-9.jpg

Jo Pil Yeon is the man of Giant. He rocked it and is still rocking the show to its real charm. Amazing actor. I have never loved a villain so much-- it makes me feel evil sometimes and question my conscious. I think I'm going to cry for JPY the most when this epicness ends.
Also Sangmo--- another marvelous character. Amazing acting. Never saw the actor anywhere else, but my goodness the young and adult version both just--amazing. Incredible really.
Also I think Minwoo did a pretty good job as well. As for Miju, I think she did well with what she was given. In all the emotional scenes she played, I really could feel her pain as for her cute image in the earlier days-- I think that is the moment she shined the most. The actress who plays Miju I find has an amazing knack for bringing a kind of warmth to the screen. I'm watching her in High Kick Through the Roof (along with the actor who plays Jo Pil Yeon) and she is very good. -- Of course if we compare, from all the actors and actresses in Giant, the Miju actress is the most junior in this field. (I think) But she still did a good job of making a spot of her own among a crowd of brilliant actors and actresses.
Really, I think JPY beat Mishil in the game of best villain.

Oh, Park Sang-min, aka. Seong-mo? Here's him when he started his career aged only 19, where he played the lead in what was the Korean equivalent on The Godfather:* http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Giant/photo11493.jpg
You can see now why they cast Kim Soo-hyun for the his junior version, eh? The tough guy with sad eyes, the vulnerability...
Since this role he's played minor, forgettable characters, hence lived in relative obscurity. Which is sad. But not anymore...!
*Yeah, yeah, so I'm pimping out my photobucket collection.

I thought I was the only one watching 'Giant' around here! This has turned out to be the sort of show where the ending of each episode catches you by suprise, because you get so caught up in it.
I am so waiting for the downfall of Jo PilYeon and his evil laugh, but I've learned through many an SBS drama that it is usually all about forgiveness at the end. We'll see...
Both my wife and I know the actor playing 'Sangmo' as "Man Gam"-anyone else remember him in that long-ago period drama?
One last thought: Why didn't Gangmo and his two co-workers testify against Jungshik and send him to prison for murder? Will all be forgiven with him, too?

You haven't seen episode 56 onwards? 56 was imo, one of the strongest episodes yet, and SM's mighty, earth-shattering, herculean roar of fury *whimper*. (That was one intense and heartbreaking sequence.)
You really think there is still a chance for redemption hence forgiveness for CPY, after that? No way in hell, I say.
I think HTS has redeemed himself, but if SM continues to wring him dry, that's fine too. Since we all know SM never forgives and never forgets.
You've probably seen a lot more shows than I have, but going off other SBS modern-period epics like Sandglass, Fashion 70s (and I'm currently trawling through sections of Rustic Period, though this is a biopic) -- no one dodges their comeuppance. No one.
From PSM's past projects I've only watched the General's Son. But I'm really wanting to watch River of Brothers, alas, it's rare to find.

I love GIANT to boot to be honest i watch it because of LEE BUM SOO at first ohh boy even from the 1st ep i was sooo marveled at this drama you name it acting , directing, plot, music, scenes everything about it. Especially the plot building for those who is not willing to give GIANT a chance because of the 60 eps and the not so eye candy lead its your lost because if you open up and willing to endure the agony journey to through all that in GIANT i can say that you'll be in love with GIANT well i may be wrong to but for me this is the first time i able to watch drama more than 20 eps without loathing. GIANT is a very generous and honest drama it giving the story with brilliant execution and i have to mention all the younger actor they are sooo talented especially the Lee's siblings and trust me when i say this go back watch the the early eps and compare each character with the older character my goodness even the way they laugh, walk, cried, talk ,act totally same with the older character trust me this kind of small details that been taking care shows how GIANT is not a small fry drama it came with calm waves along the way and at the end it became the GIANT tsunami swept all the audience and trust me again even with rerun and DVD's GIANT will be remembered as one of the best drama of all time. I totally agree with TABER and SUPAH statement the extentions is one of the best decisions. The writers is sooooooo brilliant on how he bale to construct his idea and able to have it all connected through out the drama and by all means all the actors shines in this GIANT from main lead, villains, sidekicks, everyone but the most important is GIANT is very inspiring i will not called it perfect nooo because nothing is perfect but all i can say the combinations achieved in GIANT is sooo devine that i am feeling very proud and hopefully it can be the benchmark for other drama and actors.
