Kim Myung-min plays Joseon’s Great (mustachioed) Detective
by javabeans
The first poster is out for Kim Myung-min‘s upcoming mystery historical movie, which has undergone a slight title change to Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane. And while I’m not a fan of the mustache on my leading men — or its tawdry cousin, the pornstache — you’ve gotta give them credit for going for the comic factor. Lulz.
This project isn’t described as a comedy (it’s a suspense mystery), but this gives me hope that we can expect a dash of humor, which is an idea I can get fully behind. Although Kim is known for his powerful, commanding roles — whether playing a cold, ambitious doctor in White Tower, a sneering orchestra conductor in Beethoven’s Virus, or a man dying of ALS in My Love By My Side — he also has a wonderful sense of humor and comic timing. (If you haven’t seen him playing a hilarious, dense, brawns-before-brains type of ex-gangster in Bad Family, I highly recommend it.)
The movie takes place in the 17th year of Joseon’s King Jeong-jo, and brings in Kim, playing the top detective of the day, to investigate a series of murders. Although his character had initially been a version of Jung Yak-yong, a real-life historical figure who was the subject of a mystery-sageuk cable drama two years ago, the description has been changed and he now plays a character named simply Kim Jin.
The film, which is based on a historical novel titled Secret of the Gate of Virtue, is set for a January 27 release. It co-stars Han Ji-min (Cain and Abel) and Oh Dal-soo (The Good, The Bad, The Weird).

Maybe he'll shave it off since Mo-vember is over. Or maybe not, seeing as how they don't have that in Korea.

WIth that devilish grin, he reminds me of Hercule Poirot, the famous french detective of Agatha Christie's novels.
I don't know what to expect here, but it will certainly be intriguing if Kim Myung-min is involved.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the 'stache, but he doesn't have the egg-shaped head and the rotund body-shape ;)

Belgian, my dear. ^^
Hercule Poirot is very adamant about not being mistaken for being French.

I was actually wondering whether they were deliberately going for the Hercule Poirot look as a kind of LOL factor. It's been a while since I've seen a character sporting a moustache *that* pronounced and... well, fake-looking :P

But Poirot takes better care of his moustaches, and they're always called enormous XD He also likes to twirl them in the books ^^ But still, I can see where you're coming from XD
And as chace said, he's Belgian, although everyone always assumes he's French!!! XD He doesn't like that at all XD

Agree. Definitely a dandy like Poirot, but gotta twirl up the ends of the mustache a bit. However, if he says:"Mon Ami" the movie is in trouble.

I hope there are lots of scenes of him twirling this mustache when deep in thought. That would make me giggle.

KMM totally won me over in 'Bad Family.' It's hi-larious and so endearing. The entire cast totally reeled me in w/ their quirky and lovable ways.

I totally agree. Bad Family is my favorite comedy-family drama.
I think the poster looks cute. Plus Kim Myung-min is adorable and leaves me in a pile of gobbly-goop when he's on screen. The man can act and oozes charisma!! I can't even capture his awesome in words!

im actually rewatching it right now. probably the 5th time i'm watching it. i just love everyone in the cast. heck, i dont even mind Mr. Toad. ha ha ha.
Narim was just tooo adorable for words. and everytime i see KMM, the 1st two things that come to mind: Oh Dal Gun-ssi [in Hyun Young's voice] and "Do you wanna smell dirt?" lol.

Hahaha. I've rewatched it a bunch, too. The cast was great (probably my second favorite next to Evasive Inquiry Agency). I loved how everyone started to use Dal-gun's catchphrase: "Do you want to smell dirt?" I think even Narim used it!

Oh great. Look what you guys went and did. Guess what I'll be re-watching the next holiday?
And the "you wanna smell dirt?" is way up there w/ Han Ye Seul's "look at is this crap" from Couple of Trouble/Fantasy.

LOL where is the beard to go with this tash? Just from the picture alone, I would have guessed this to be more of a comedy drama than anything else :D
