Kim Hyo-jin as one half of lesbian couple in Ashamed
by girlfriday
Though she plays the dreaded second lead Seo-jun in current trendy drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, Kim Hyo-jin is starring as the lead in the upcoming film Ashamed [창피해], featuring a love story between two young women.
Kim Hyo-jin plays a character who has attempted suicide, and has a fateful incident with a pickpocket, played by Kim Kkot-bi (Magic and Loss, Ghost) (her name means literally “flower rain,” hippie-style), and the two embark on a romantic journey.
The film, directed by Kim Soo-hyun (So Cute: that’s the title of a film, not a comment on the director) has already been invited abroad for the Berlin Film Festival, which is a good sign for the indie production. Kim Hyo-jin said, “I’m happy enough that we were invited to an international film festival, and excited. It doesn’t matter if we win any prizes; it’s just such a huge honor regardless.”
Interestingly, Kim has portrayed a lesbian relationship before, in last year’s The End and the Beginning, with Uhm Jung-hwa. I haven’t seen her in anything besides Mary Stayed Out All Night, but she’s doing a good job there, even if her character is nine kinds of aggravating. I like her cool, aloof vibe, with hints of a soft underbelly, although from what I can see of her career, she’s essentially playing herself in the role of Seo-jun, so there’s that. I like the idea of seeing her star in something where she has the chance to be sympathetic, and NOT a boyfriend-stealer. Hands off Mu-gyul!
Ashamed will premiere at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, which runs from February 10-20, 2011.

Liking the sound of the storyline. Sounds more Brokeback Mountain than Spider Lilies or The Kids Are All Right To Me. I love that Korean filmmakers aren't shying away from the subject.

It's nice to see that guys aren't the only ones who can be gay in Korean film projects. Just the other day, I was actually wondering if lesbians were ever going to make an appearance.

Me too.
Here's a tip for Korean drama-writers: less cancer, more lesbians.

They don't put cancers as storyline in movie, ever. Blood, yes. Psychos, definitely. This is a film we are talking about. Korean films are broad ranged, from psycho thrillers to gay movies. Hell, I think Korean movies are more broad than American ones. Correct me, if I'm wrong. Korean drama, on the hand, is more limited by the audiences because tv audiences tended to be younger and etc.

I wasn't referring to film-writers which is why I wrote "drama-writers".
I meant that now that lesbians are appearing in k-films surely they can appear in k-dramas.
I'm not American and I really wasn't implying that US films are good or diverse. I'm completely allergic to them.

I don't think there's any reason to be "Ashamed" at all, those pictures of this two girls embracing are "Beautiful" to say the least! I am glad that Korea is doing more to show the other side of the homosexual coin, I am all in support for a "Lesbian couple" on the big screen!!!
*Question*
Is there a K-Drama that has shown a "Lesbian" couple at all?

In my head: many.
In reality; I can't think of one. How insane is that?
But if I don't wear my glasses and squint just so; the main couple on "Mary Stayed Out..." can almost do the trick.
Might I say how amazing it is to read about this lovely topic without any hateful/ignorant posts!

That may be because those who oppose your views do not like being bombarded by hateful, arrogant disdain, and see no point in expressing their own views because it is very unlikely you and others will listen, or even care.

I do hope that you are referring to yourself!!!!
Since nobody has put "You" or the people who disagree with us down!!!!
If you disagree with the fact that woman can fall in love with some one that shares their own gender fair enough, but to imply that some how we are ready to treat you with " Hateful, Arrogant Disdain", is more than I can comprehend, since you are the one that some how seems to be making us to be some sort of the "bad guys", and if that was your intent I do not take that kindly, further more if that's your attitude than by all means F**k Off and go be mean some other place!!!!!

I find it odd how you say it's "fair enough" that I disagree with homosexuality, and then act completely opposite to that statement. I did imply that many supporters of homosexuality treat those opposing their beliefs violently, but only because that's what I have seen myself on Dramabeans comments section. (I am not, however, implying that *all* supporters of homosexuality are like that--I know there are plenty of very kind gay people out there, though that doesn't matter in my beliefs)
You seem to have twisted my words into something far worser than I had intended. The point of my original post was simply to say that there are many who disagree with homosexuality, but perhaps do not express their opinions because of people who automatically label them "hateful", "ignorant", and throw expletives and excessive exclamation points at them. (Now, not to say that those opposing homosexuality are saints--there are many who rightfully deserve the hatred they receive, but often all are labeled the same regardless of if they earned it).
I was simply trying to say that the attitudes of many supporters of homosexuality is sometimes worse than those whom they despise, and this prevents intelligent debate.
And why, may I ask, would it be wrong for me to have a negative attitude and be "mean", but it's perfectly fine for you?

@Papyrus.
Mr/Ms.
I will like to point out something that you may have overlook to begin with;
1- This is a public forum (thanks JB!), and most people around here specially the “old timers” have learned how to follow “Proper Protocol” when posting their comments.
2- If you disagree with somebody, or have strong opinions people are going to challenge them, or disagree with them in return.
3- We all respect “General” comments, but comments directed to a particular person or a particular cause will most likely will be challenge, and I may add some times the response will not be a kind one.
4- No one in the above comments has ever made the point to try to change the way you view “Homosexuality”. You are entitle to your opinion even when I strongly disagree with you.
5- Why would you feel compel to make a point that you know before hand that it will no be received very well it is beyond my ability to comprehend, since clearly as you stated your motivation was not to engage in a “Healthy, and Respectful” dialog concerning the issue that of “Lesbianism”. I can venture to say that the rest of the people who posted a comment on this thread so far will be willing to have a healthy discussion concerning the topic as long as it is treated with respect of the topic and of individuals, at least I am.
6- I stand by my original comment that nobody was being “Hateful, mean, unkind, prejudicial, or nasty” to the people who disagree with lesbians as a lifestyle. Here is @marisa's original quote;
“ Might I say how amazing it is to read about this lovely topic without any hateful/ignorant posts!”, this is a general comment not directed at any particular person or group, so you must understand that your response at least IMHO was uncalled for.
7- I want to publicly apologize for telling you to “*F**k Off” since you do have as much right to your opinion as I do, having said that; If you will like to have an intelligent and above all a respectful discussion about this topic I can say that most people will be willing to hear what you have to say, but on the other hand if you come with loaded guns implying things that are not completely true than my friend, most people will not be kind when responding to your assumptions .
May you have a good day!!!!!
P.S. I am a happy 100% “Heterosexual Male”

@10.1.1.1.2 Amg1:
I'm not saying it's wrong to disagree, but many peoples' attitudes and words are far stronger and violent than necessary. I'm perfectly fine if people disagree with each other on any subject, but a civil and respectful tone should be undertaken at all times by both parties, otherwise everything gets very ugly very quickly.
It's true that no one has ever made a point to change my views on homosexuality, but if I were to post something that were more explicitly anti-gay (respectfully, calmly stating my beliefs), I can almost guarantee you that there would be derogatory terms and death threat-like replies.
To me, Marisa's original post implied that those who disagree with homosexuality (as there hadn't been any posts of the kind yet) are hateful and ignorant, and that irked me because it's an assumptive statement grouping all those who do not agree with homosexuality together. To me, that was like someone who likes the color green in a roomful of other people who like the color green, saying, "I'm so glad there's no people who like the color blue here! All of those people are jerks and idiots because they don't agree with me." Perhaps I was oversensitive and reacted too strongly, but that is the reason why I wrote my original post.
I do not intend to "come with loaded guns implying things that are not completely true," but my point is that even if it seems like I am, or you are, or anyone else is, reacting violently never helps. If you can, shoot down the other person's beliefs with logic and reason instead of blowing up (even if one feels the right to), as I have seen far too many times on both sides of the issue. Respect (to people, not necessarily their beliefs) and open-mindedness (being willing to consider and logically think about something you disagree with--because otherwise one has a blind faith, which is foolishness) should be held by all--the lack of such turns everything into a name-calling, yelling contest.
That's what I've been trying to convey, not necessarily whether homosexuality is right or wrong, though I do believe it is wrong.
I appreciate your apology and calmer tone.

@Papyrus - I totally agree with you. I've always been civil about my anti-homosexual stance, yet have always been lambasted with expletives and the ever most convenient 'bigot!' Whenever I've pointed out many hypocritical statements and contradictory views of pro-homosexual groups and individuals. e.g. Homosexuallity only got repealed from the APA as a pathological disorder mainly due to the terrorists attacks on it - Response: 'Bigot!' or that homosexuallity has not actually been proven as genetic and no-one is actually 'born that way' Response: 'Bigot!' etc
It amazes me that such a minority gets soo much promotion and that such a vast majority of people don't even know what they're defending, when they defend it. It also chagrins me that, after doing so much research, learning and earnestly studying the subject, anti-homosexual individuals opinions are discarded as 'biggoted, narrow-minded religious freaks'.
That's just my opinion. and lol at all the over-the-top hysterical and ridiculous comments in response to your simply put decent one

Are you sure? Because it seems like people are always screaming about "Oh, my god! Won't anyone thinks of the poor children" when it comes to gay guy kissing. However, when it comes to lesbian, people are like "ooh, I like." This just shows that people are more tolerant on the idea of female being masculine (the norm), but males cannot definitely be feminine (not the norm). Apparently, being feminine is the DEVIL's WORK!
