2010 Beanie Awards: Vote for your favorite dramas of the year

It’s December, and you know what that means around these parts: Time to reflect on the past year and see how the dramas stacked up! And boy, were there a lot of them.

As in previous years, I am planning a multi-part series (with special guest bloggers, natch!) to wrap up the year, which we’re busily writing up now — keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks! If you want a refresher on how previous years have gone, here’s this handy tag to take you right to them.

But before we tell you what we thought about the dramas of 2010, this is YOUR turn to weigh in and vote for your favorite shows, couples, bromances — and, yes, your big disappointments — in what we’re calling the Beanie Awards. They’re in your hands; give ’em out with care!

FAVORITE DRAMA SERIES OF 2010

Starting off with the big one, vote for your favorite drama of the year, whether that means your pick for an artistic “best” or simply an emotional favorite. The voting list is by no means a comprehensive collection of all the dramas that aired in 2010; it would be too overwhelming to include them all. So we narrowed the list to twenty of the likeliest candidates, and since we realize it may be tough to just pick one, you can select up to three dramas.

FAVORITE COMEDIC DRAMA

Which drama made you laugh, whether with insane antics, witty banter, or a heartwarming sense of humor?

FAVORITE HISTORICAL DRAMA

Some of these are more traditional in their format (such as Dong Yi), while others have fusion elements (like the trendy-romantic vibe in Sungkyunkwan Scandal), and others were downright genre pieces set in the past (sci-fi and paranormal-oriented Joseon X-Files). But they were all set anywhere from a hundred to a thousand years in the past and cloaked in colorful period costumes.

FAVORITE ACTION OR MELODRAMA SERIES

This is a bit of a mishmash of a category, I know. Still, I wanted to separate out these dramas from the rest of the trendy or sageuk crowd.

FAVORITE FAMILY DRAMA

Alas, I can’t offer you much insight on this category, being that I am not quite so avid a follower of this genre as I am the others. However, family series make up a huge part of the airtime on Korean television, so it deserves its voting category.

FAVORITE ROMANTIC PAIRING

Ah, romance. The lifeblood of the Korean drama, particularly the trendy variety. Which pairing tickled your fancy the most? Which couple got your inner fangirl squealing in delight? Which OTP did you root for through all the requisite angst that ran interference during those cursed episodes in the middle when you really just wanted them to kiss already?

BEST KISS

Speaking of kisses… We know that a kiss in K-dramaland isnt ever just a kiss. It’s often so much more — it’s a decision, an epiphany, a game-changer. Which kiss made you squee the loudest? (Or snort in laughter, as the case may be.)

FAVORITE PIGGYBACK RIDE

If kisses are declarations, surely the piggyback ride, seen in practically every kdrama since the beginning of kdrama time, also makes a statement. Such as, “I want to take care of you.” Or maybe it’s more like “I don’t want to take care of you but I care too much to NOT take care of you,” or even “I don’t WANT to care but I can’t help it so I’ll take care of you anyway.” Most loaded means of transportation EVER.

FAVORITE CHARACTER

The charisma and/or appeal of a character is an elusive quality that can make or break a drama: sometimes lovable characters can sustain entire dramas with their charm even when, let’s face it, the rest of the stuff ain’t so good. But when a character gets under your skin and makes you fall in love with them, there’s a certain magic that comes into play. Who did that for you this year?

BEST DRAMA POSSE

Friendship is rarely the focus of a drama, but the presence of a good friend — or several — can elevate a drama and warm your heart. They exult with our heroes when there’s cause for celebration, console them with liquor and sympathy when they’re down, and hold back their hair when they’re really down.

BEST VILLAIN

Villains can be bratty interlopers, crazed madmen (or women), or evil masterminds. All we know is: They spice up dramas and are lots of fun to hate. Who needs boring ol’ Fate to complicate your life when you’ve got enemies like these?

FAVORITE BROMANCE

Boys. Sometimes fighting. Sometimes frolicking. Need I say more?

FAVORITE ALTERNATE PAIRING

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent many a drama feeling that dread in the pit of your stomach when you realize, Crap, I picked the wrong team. It becomes painfully obvious that the couple you’re rooting for is never gonna make it, often leaving one party out of the loop and broken-hearted. Who was your favorite couple who was Not Meant To Be?

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE

Breakout doesn’t necessarily mean newcomer, although the two often go hand in hand. The actors in this category may have had other credits to their names, but it was in these selections that they shined, made their presence known, and springboarded to what will likely be greater fame. (Note: Some actors had big roles this year, but have been around or were previously well-known, and therefore were left off the list.)

OVERRATED DRAMA

“Overrated” applies to dramas that had mainstream popularity, but perhaps didn’t deserve the level of attention they got. By the same token, “underrated” applies to dramas that didn’t get as much love, but which you thought deserved more attention.

UNDERRATED DRAMA

DISAPPOINTING ENDING

Don’t you hate it when a drama is doing so well, and carries so much promise, only to fall flat in the final stretch? Even if 95% of a show is solid, a bad final 5% can really cause a drama to plummet in your affections. Sadly, this happens way too frequently.

BIGGEST WASTE OF TALENT

Likewise, it’s a bummer when a drama boasts a fantastic cast or your favorite star… and then fails to use his/her talents. Not only do you feel cheated, but you feel sorry for the actor who got suckered into a role that sorely underutilizes them.

BEST PERM

There was a fair number of male stars rockin’ the curly hair this year, for better or for worse. I KNOW WHO I’M VOTING FOR.

BEST ‘STACHE

With the rise of the “beast-men” trend, we saw a lot more abs, often glistening with sweat (thanks, Chuno), and a LOT more examples of facial hair, from minor scruff to the dreaded pornstache to full-on beards. Who rocked it best?

BEST AND WORST USE OF AN IDOL STAR

As we know, idols are advancing into television dramas with greater frequency these days, to a point where you can hardly throw a stone without hitting a chiseled idol ab. The phenomenon is usually met with some skepticism by viewers who are wary of untrained, inexperienced actors getting leading (or prominent supporting) roles, even as the idols are used to draw in more viewers. Some are bad, sure, but some are surprisingly solid. How did they do in your eyes?

my statements about the dramas this year:
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho had me hooked from the first episode. I fell in love with the love story and felt anguish at the possiblity of a tragic ending. Gumiho Hunter, Miho, Daewoong, all done well....
Oh My Lady was great, and I liked that it wasn't all romance- it was also about maturing, being responsible, and caring for your child. And i was surprised that Siwon did sooo well.
Personal Taste was good. Seulong totally pulled off his whiny assistant character, LOVED Sangjun doing the gay act and being all "unnie!" Loved the couple. Hated InHee (the actyress did great with her). I felt the ending was a bit weak though, and couldhave used an extension.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Great story, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride, but the ending to Yoonhee's crossdressing and that girl jumping on roofs was ugh. ..Yoonhee's character annoyed me since she didn't even try to act manly, and was oblivious to Moon Jae Shin but she was smart, and Park Min young did well with her. Yoochun, your acting was better than expected. Liked your character and Yoonhee, but I wasn't a shipper. Song Joongki I am forever a fan. Yoerim always made me go fangirly. Yoo Ah In showed his acting skills. And finally (last, yes, but most certainly not least or even close to the word less), Moon Jae Shin is forever my ideal type.
Playful Kiss. I watched out of mere curiosity about what the heck was all the hype about. I stuck around hoping it would get better. Then kept watching because it was habit. Finally, after 14 episodes, I figured it wouldn't hurt to watch the ending. Lame, unintelligent story. It had its relatable bits, mind you, and it was pretty much harmless, but zero character development or meaningful action. Hani is by no means a role model, but Haera (despite being the love rival) was actually likeable.

Baker King Kim Tak Goo was definitely worth all its hype and ratings. True, melodrama is usually not my thing, as you can tell, but this was way too good to pass up. It was a mix of values, a love story, and mainly about a good person persevering depite all obstacles. I loved it, all 30 episodes, from beginning to end. The acting was great, all the characters evolve in some way, and it was just great directing and writing.

Fugitive: Plan B was AWESOME!!!! Rain did a great job with his character, and all the actors played their parts well. I loved how the story itself evolved, as well as the characters, from just flashy and a bit cheesy to deeper and more emotional. It never forgot its identity and I loved every single episode!!!! It was one heck of a ride and I recommend it to everyone.

Anyways, currently, I'm watching Secret Garden, It's Okay Daddy's Girl, and Mary Stayed Out All Night. I love the heart behind Daddy's Girl and the entertaining plot of Secret Garden. Mary is turningout to be a Playful Kiss repeat for me, in terms of story and character development. I was hoping that this weeks episodes would show a change due to the transition from one writer to another, and I thought the show had lost its mind. But maybe it will deliver next week, what with this conflicting setup. And the reason I bother about Mary is because I actually expected something from that show, and I was disappointed. There was potential, and they could easily have made it hard to tell who Mary will pick, but noooo. As for Secret Garden, I have never seen Hyun Bin or Ha Ji Won acting before, and I must say I tink they are awesome. I'm glad Secret Garden is taking a turn now, with evolving the characters, since the antics were great but could easly hinder development if drawn out too long. as for Daddy's Girl, let's be honest. I got interested because Donghae is in it. i like the show for the show itself, though, and I like the fact tat its more about family than anything else. The acting is solid, and I think it has potential to be very heartwarming.

This time you will believe me or think I'm lying but also to all of you to think.
But I just want to tell you what I've seen everyone I have met recognized HYUN JOONG!!!! By chance.
This occurs when two days before I met him at 5 pm at the district Oinsrdong! I stared at him for a long time while walking through this store. I think that also got KIM HYUNJOONG but not end it with a yes, he really Men wearing high black body and shirt coach, I saw him in the side. But I can honestly say that He 's very good. He was really handsome. When people begin to notice that the row. These hands before they themselves know to start. He turned to look at us and smiled slightly before turning back to the original. While standing with the women, then to any other fat.
Bob walked into submission to their brown bag. He went on the bus. And out of there right away.

That day I did not sleep with me what merits a good chance to have met him, although it is a little time. But I still feel excited so far. Very handsome as he told everyone. I own a second mother, but I just would like to think. Idol is now seriously. Importantly, he is not arrogant at all despite the knowledge that there are many people look at him standing. But he only turned to eye with us frequently. And as far as I remember. He sent a smile to. Younger woman behind me. Before turning to just such a smile that I can not sleep. Until now.
I think HYUNJOONG!!!!

Playful kiss makes Korean people shame about Korean dramas. The drama was showing only the erotic scenes by staffs. All staffs of PK need to consider what is important in public eyes. The group 8 needs to do more researches what viewers want. Viewers do not want to see consitantly the erotic scenes. There are a lot of good stories like Gumiho, Secrete Garden, and Sungkyunkan scandle.

Playful kiss is a shamful drama, so the viewers from Korea and international rejected it except teenagers. The dummy Jung So Min forcefully kissed twice the SS501 leader. How dirty is that. She is a foolish girl and doesn't know how to act. Her acting was terrible. Only her thinking was how to seduce Hyun Joong instead of trying to be a professional actress even though she is a brand new girl who doesn't know how to work in showbiz at all. Her acting was horrible. That is the reason all showbiz and celebrities don't like her. Her behaviors were not acceptable in the cold showbiz world and public eyes. Shame on Jung So Min. I agree Kim Hyun Joong has imporved his acting skill, but he chose a wrong drama.

I always like the way you analyze every drama every year! Anyway, like from the past year, I notice you don't watch alot of other KBS Family Dramas and other MBC and SBS as well.

I was looking for a review of these dramas from you but no luck. But still you're really great when it comes to analyzing dramas. That's why I always come back for more and more and always thankful that you created this blog! Keep it up!

Anyway, here are the list of the dramas from 2007 and so on:

I hate you but it's fine

You are my Destiny

Everybody Cha Cha Cha

A Perfect Day for the wind to Blow

Smile Dong Hae

I Love you Don't Cry

Three Brothers

Please Marry Me/All About Marriage

Definitely Neighbors

and Other Sageuk Dramas; Anyway, there is this nice School Drama last 2007 that aired in KBS it's good to. It's Supermom.

I notice that you're not into Sageuk Dramas that much. And like last year, this is the same thing I was doing, reading your blog for your year end post I've been reading since you started your blog. Till here... and Have a Blessed New Year!

I don't agree to any of these results!

Especially to the FAVORITE ACTION OR MELODRAMA SERIES --- A MAN CALLED GOD should had lead that category by thousands of votes!

MARY STAYED OUT ALL NIGHT should had won the BEST KISS! Although, it should had been the second kiss in the dark ally... Not the surprise kiss. That was a bit -awkward to watch.

MY TOP 3 FAVORITE 2010 Drama (that I've seen):

1.) Secret Garden (So far, so good!)
2.) My GF is a Gumiho
3.) Baker King, Kim Tak Gu (Though, the ending was not what I wanted!)
---
4 & 5 would be Mary Stayed Out All Night & Fugitive Plan B!

FAVORITE LEAD COUPLE should had been SECRET GARDEN #1 and #2 should had been MARY STAYED OUT ALL NIGHT!

What I've notice... There's a lot of Gumiho fans! I'm sure ya voted the most! lol

I thought hottest kiss was the 'game over' kiss in PT but MGIAG was best overall drama! Hoi-hoi!!!!! PP was my 2nd favorite because, despite the slow beginning, the story, acting...everyhting was phenomenal!!!!!!! Can't wait for 2011's new dramas... in the meantime I'm going to find something else delicious to watch.
