Park Shin-hye to star in Taiwanese drama
by girlfriday
Park Shin-hye (You’re Beautiful, Cyrano Dating Agency) has been busy crossing borders for her latest drama project, a Taiwanese drama adaptation of Japanese manga series Hayate the Combat Butler. Just what exactly is a combat butler? I don’t know, but I can imagine that it’d be handy to have one around. And really, what kind of butler would you be if you weren’t combat-ready?
Taiwanese idol star George Hu (pictured below) will be playing said combat butler, a young man saddled with so much family debt that he has to start taking odd jobs just to make ends meet. Park will play a chaebol, one who is particularly in danger all the time from thugs who want to kidnap and ransom her for her family’s fortune. She hires him as a butler, but I guess circumstances make it so that he really ends up being more like a bodyguard than a butler.
Sigh. Now I just want to rewatch Sandglass and swoon over Lee Jung-jae.
I’m interested to know if Park will be speaking Taiwanese, (which doesn’t seem likely) or just speaking Korean (which means half of the drama will be subtitled for its own domestic audience). I’m supposing the latter, unless everybody’s speaking English, in which case I boycott. Either way, the premise sounds cute as far as the characters go, but I see a lot of damsel-in-distress-saving about to happen, which I’m not so much a fan of. Could potentially be an international hit, if it can manage to grab both country’s audiences.
Filming began last month, and Park will remain in Taiwan until the end of the year wrapping up the series. The drama plans to premiere in Taiwan early next year.

As much as I love my Taiwanese dramas, I don't like such crossover dramas. Besides, George Hu kind of, can't act =X
I love Park Shin Hye, and I cringe to imagine her lovely voice being dubbed by some high-pitch act-cute voice... :(

But not bad, overall. A bit shaky and I don't think the back-up singer was doing her any favours, but you can definitely see her professionalism here.

I am happy that Shin-Hye will be in another series coz I just love her. Taiwanese dramas are always and I mean always true to the original source or in this case the Japanese manga. I love it! George is cute to be honest I find his acting lacking but he could improve. I now have my hopes up!

Well I think this makes an interesting couple.. i've definitely enjoyed watching their dramas separately so it'll be nice to see their on screen chemistry..
as for the dubbing issue, i guess it is kind of weird knowing that PSH is korean.. but can I just say (even though this is going to expose just how bad I am w/ media news.. I'm more of a "just watch and enjoy the drama" type of girl) that I LOVED the drama My Lucky Star and it's only today that I found out that the girl's voice was dubbed.. really sorry but I honestly thought that was her voice and in my defense this was when I was just new to dramas and didn't know any better..
So I mean I don't think it'll be too bad if her voice was dubbed though I agree there's a whole tone/effort in how you express your lines that will be taken away from it..

Ah yes! Zettai Kareshi. I have very mixed feelings about that -_- ... on the one hand, I think Wu Chun is very cute and he definitely has a good enough figure for the part. On the other hand, he is just not ... a good ... actor ... but maybe, since he's playing a robot, he will be perfect. Just have to wait and see!

Only the Mainland Chinese dramas dub over everyone - Taiwanese dramas only dub over the foreign actors. Either way there are always Chinese subs, so I'm happy lol. I'm fairly certain they will dub over PSH; I just hope they will use someone with a nice voice instead of an annoying, whiny one.
I also have serious doubts that you or JB will enjoy this drama. This is purely my personal opinion but Taiwanese dramas can be very over-acted and quite cheesy. I may be biased because I can understand everything they're saying (whereas in K-dramas, some of the cheese is usually lost in translation). The directors and editors also don't pay as much attention to the more artistic features (like soundtrack and shot composition) as Korean directors would. It's simply a difference in style - Taiwanese dramas are much more focused on story telling and churning out new plot to grab the audience's attention. They also tend to go on for longer (around 24 eps is the minimum, I think). Then again, you might find it perfectly cute and fine! I'm not in any way trying to dissuade you from trying this drama; just wanted to give you a bit of a heads-up.

ahh...I have mixed feelings about this but it's mostly negative feelings. I like Taiwanese dramas but I dislike the quality when I see it. I don't know how to explain so I'm going to agree with Q on the artistic features and I definitely agree with Q on the full of cheese and fluff and the story lines. I recently discovered mainland China dramas and it irritates me to no end on why they dub over the voices but I will sit and watch it because I like the look of the product and the plot lines.
aiyyeee...I don't know if I will be able to watch this. I feel like its a train wreck. =( Man, I'm super negative tonight.

Lol they won't subtitle for sure - I think they'll dub over her just like how they did to all the other Korean actresses in Chinese dramas.
Really looking forward to Park's performance in this one.. who the heck is this George Hu, I used to pride myself into being up to date with most Tw stars but I guess that's no longer the case...

Yeah, it will be dubbed, as it was dubbed for Yoo Ha Na in My Lucky Star ^^. She spoke a little bit of mandarin, but in some parts of the drama, she spoke Korean, so the voice was dubbed to make it even.
But I didn't know that Park Shin Hye could speak a bit of Mandarin! That's great!
I wish her the best for this drama!
I've been disappointed with T-drama for a while now. The last I've watched is Autumn's Concerto, which was great (until the crappy end came).
Maybe I'll watch this one for PSH ^^.
It's a drama adapted from a manga, so it can't be a copy and paste of My Fair Lady ^^".

i thought PSH will play the role of maria (a maid) and i have seen the cast photos on the presscon(?)- on it were PSH then George Hu then the other girl who has blonde long hair (the look actually fits Nagi- the chaebol girl)...
i have seen the anime version, no wow factor for me...

Sigh.. Why must it be a Taiwanese drama..?! Although there are some exceptions, Taiwanese dramas (Taiwanese idol dramas, to be exact) usually equate to slapstick comedy and HORRIBLE acting and they make every cliche in K-dramas look creative. What a waste of a talent like Park Shin-hye =(

The anime was fun to watch, but... it doesn't really have a plot (the manga maybe, but I didn't read it) so maybe the drama will just be taking the characters and then improvise on the story.
Ever since Taiwan adapted Hana Kimi with Ella as Ashiya Mizuki I've stopped watching their dramas altogether. It still makes me angry up to this day, lol
Ugh, I hope PSH can finish this one real quick so I can see her in another K-drama again.

read all comments since yesterday, and i noticed that most are ambivalent towards anime/manga adapted as dramas.
probably this came about because of lack of good scripts. these manga/anime (sorry, i'm not too familiar with these - my words might be wrong) are readily available and people are familiar with their storylines.
i have a suggestion for producers/film makers etc: a scriptwriting contest. i believe that there are talents out there waiting to have a break.

No one's mentioned how beautiful PSH looks in that photo!
Not that I'm totally against the idea, but I've never been able to understand that phenomenon of actors acting in languages they can't speak. Dubbed or subtitled, it just seems like a LOT of unnecessary work for the foreign actor and the other cast/crew that have to constantly deal with the language barrier. They do it a lot in India as well, where many regional languages are spoken and say, an actress from the north will do a film in the south but she can't actually speak the language so she just kind of mouths her lines (badly) and they dub it in a really high pitched voice. I totally agree with girlfriday that taking away a performer's voice is taking away one of their most important means of expression.
I saw an episode of the anime a while ago, with this weird tiger who's obsessed with PSH's character. I was so confused but could not stop laughing. I wonder how they'll adapt that anime weirdness to a live-action...

George Hu? Nooooooooooooo! A major cutie? Yes! A major cutie who can't act for the life of him? Double-super-emphatic-YES! With all the smack talk going around about the quality of TW dramas, I really wish they would have cast someone with actual acting ability (Ethan Yuan, Show Luo would have been fine choices). Ugh. I'm crossing my fingers for a major acting breakthrough.

This is the first airing to snowball Korea-Taiwan collaboration, since a while, so I'm curious.
George has such a baby face like PSH, so they'll make a pretty pair. This will be fun to watch tabloids make a ruckus out of nothing between these two leads.
I'm highly anticipating Wu Chun and Goo Hye Sun in the Taiwanese adaptation to Absolute Boyfriend. Oh, then there's SuJu's Siwon and Donghae collaborating with Taiwan's Ariel Lin for the adaptation to Skip Beat.

yes i always thought Taiwnise speak cantanese
rather than the mainland Mandarin, just like Hong Kong. Witch is why Hong Hong and TW actors always get voice dubbed when acting in mainland productions, even if they happen to also speak Mandarin. I would say she would just act in Korean and get voice dubbed less strain for everyone that way. Jang Nara has always acted in Korean in all her Chinese dramas, it no big thing as long as they use a good voice actress.
On the drama itself I read some place I think over at AsianEU that the two stars of the show where sent home for a month to learn to be more 'intense' or something like that.

Plus, Benjie Wang – Taiwanese-American, 28 years old (or 29, not sure), Political Science graduate, Boston Ma., kung-fu expert.
added bonus, the four men of Hayate can also sing.

The drama is nothing like the plot of YEH's drama, which came after the anime/manga started in Japan.
This drama will appeal to people who like pure antics and crack plots. So perhaps some of the Hong Sister crowd that loves their outrageous stuff v. their high brow (OMG did I just say High brow with Hong Sisters in the same sentence?) stuff will like this drama.
About Taiwanese dramas--just like J-dramas, it's a different format. Some directors are better than others (Winnie <3) and some actors are better than others. (Ariel over Rainie. Mainland China tends to agree in that one.) Some dramas plain suck. (Fated to Love You. Bleh. I mean, bring in the car to run her over which I saw ten episodes ago. AND it was black to boot. Really.) Some are really sweet (Down with Love) and some strike everything a TW drama can give you and more, ISWAK and TKA. And some have the most random and sad endings out of nowhere. (I avoid those) and some are simply meant to be sob fests. (Dolphin Bay--which was suckie.)
Korea has many weaknesses too. I can name the tropes off the top of my head. Noble Idiot Syndrome, you must run on the beach, Cinderella Effect, black car runs over person, Leukemia, OMG AIDS, Cancer, Philadelphia genes, They are ALL GONNA DIE in the HOSPITAL, Noble idiot syndrome plus donation scheme that doesn't work with science. And I can cover the sageuk ones too. And of course the dreaded Korean lag fest. And the unpredictability of if a drama will be good or bad. (LTM, MSOAN)
Japanese dramas--people usually hate the endings. Also hate the couple that have been staring at each other the entire damned drama and got absolutely NOWHERE at the end. KISS DAMN YOU.
Each media has it's strengths and weaknesses... so to say one is categorically better is kind of judging too fast. How many have you watched? Uhhh... I've been watching since about 2001? 2003? Something like that.
Also some manga adaptations are better than others.
Good: ISWAK, TKA (which religiously followed the manga to the point that if Winnie had to cut scenes from the manga he made sure to make a reference to it. And if not that, then he would ask permission to change something from the mangaka while she was alive--the only production of Mischievous Kiss that had the original mangaka's stamp of approval.)
Hana Kimi (TW)
Devil Beside You
Hana Yori Dango 1 and 2 (Japanese version--was ten times better than the original source material.)
Nodame Cantabile (OMG that's like crack.)
Absolute Boyfriend
Yamato Nadeshiko. (Perfect girl Revolution) With Kame-chan.
Liar Game 1 and 2. (Better than the manga 'cause there is less ruminating and explaining).
Kurosagi 1 and 2.
Goong (manhwa) was an adaptation of a comic. It was often the virgin drama for many people here.
Alright, MSOAN sucked and a whole lot, which was a manhwa online.
And Playful Kiss paled in comparison to ISWAK. (Seriously, TW drama kicked butt especially since it was religious to the original material to a fault, including tone and characterization.) Don't get me started on the Japanese version, which was just filled with all kinds of suck.
But given that list adaptation depends on the writers, not the entirety of the media you take one thing from. If you hate the last three X-men movies, does that mean all comic book movies suck? No, it means the writer that adapted the comic books to movies really sucked. (WTH--Rogue with Iceman...?)
But really consider, before saying words like ALL, and "I've only seen two but I think _x_ country's dramas suck." Same thing with any media. A production is only good at its parts and maybe some magic on top.
