Candid photos from the set of My Princess
by javabeans
It’s not much, but we have our first look at the leads of My Princess — Kim Tae-hee and Song Seung-heon — on the set of the upcoming MBC drama.
These shots were taken by fans at a Seoul department store shoot, and uploaded to the website of a tourist company catering to Japanese travelers in Korea. Oh, those Japanese ladies must have been ecstatic to see Song Seung-heon in the flesh; though hardly anyone can compare to Yonsama’s pull in Japan, Song has a pretty solid fanbase there thanks to dramas like Autumn Love Story, Summer Scent, and East of Eden. Not to mention his Ghost remake with Japanese actress Matsushima Nanako.
The romantic comedy tells a familiar rags-to-riches story as an ordinary woman (Kim Tae-hee) finds her life suddenly changed when she discovers she’s really a princess. I’m thinking Goong meets Princess Diaries, although I hope the writer’s got a few innovative tricks up her sleeves. The hero is, naturally, a chaebol.
(Urg. Just once, could we have ordinary people falling in love without one of them being a chaebol? It’s like making every American show starring a senator’s son, or a billionaire. Or every romance novel featuring a duke. There just aren’t that many chaebols floating around in real life, though you’d think from K-dramas that they are bountiful enough to form their own mini-nation of beautiful, rich, strapping young men. IF ONLY.)
My Princess will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays, beginning in January.

Actually, for me I think I'll try to see the first few episodes, just curious if it will be the disaster that I have been picturing in my head or if it will surprise me and I end up liking it. Though truly I am not SSH fan (Don't find him appealing at all).

2nd shot of KTH looks promising (that is if she's acting during that particular moment) hehe
I like the writer and I'm seriously praying to unicorns that the director does wonders to the two leads to give enough justice to the script.

Out of curiosity, what ARE the chaebol companies in Korea? I know they exist, but I can never remember which ones they are.
She looks cute, but he's always bit blah to me. :/ And I am curious about how the whole princess thing will play out, but I don't know if I'm curious enough to actually watch the show.

I see nothing wrong with giving it a try. As k-drama watchers we're more than used to cliches. What difference is it going to make if we watch another one. And who knows? Maybe Kim Tae-hee and Song Seung-heon will surprise us.

@Javabeans
All historical romance novels feature someone who has a title. Might not be a Duke, but it's something with a title. Which is just as bad as the whole chaebol thing. But I have to admit, reading those historical romances actually isn't all that bad...even though they always have similar themes.

Sorry not a fan of both of them. So much depends on the script and directing that sometimes even with a familiar theme, the drama can be good.

@ Wikipedia - oh yes ! don't forget the biggest
kimchi Co. !
From her tracksuit and hairdo we know her background and also his background, so the same old old story but have to be in different "angle" to spice-up the story for kdrama fans.

I can't help feel that maybe this cliche drama will prove to be different..considering its SSH and KTH, both actors would want to be smart with their next project selections and wouldn't just choose a fluffy drama..theres sth that must've pulled them to the drama..maybe an interesting script..I mean the screenwriter did write On Air..and I thoroughly enjoyed that
I don't know we'll wait and see.

my sister and i are trying to recall all the k-dramas we watched where a chaebol and ordinary person ended up together. we came up with the following:
1. stairway to heaven
2. boys over flowers
3. my girl
4. my fair lady
5. birth of the rich (well, they're all chaebols there..)
6. kim sam soon (was HB considered a chaebol there?)
7. lovers in paris
8. hello miss
9.prince's first love
10.save the last dance
what else? it's so hard racking our brains so early in the morning! jb, the things you make us do! hehe.

My fair lady? - I though she ended up with the butler?? no? I didn't see it in entirety, but I did see the ending...
Here's another for your list:
11. Shining Inheritance
Even if the girl don end up with the chaebol...you can guarantee that there must be a chaebol in the love triangle...lol. And I excluded a lot of dramas because the male lead weren't chaebols...merely filthy rich or for whatever reason, they have lotsa money to burn...
I guess they need a chaebol to make his character desirable. And they need the money to make woo the girl in style....lol

"though you’d think from K-dramas that they are bountiful enough to form their own mini-nation of beautiful, rich, strapping young men. IF ONLY.)"
yes, but pompous, arrogant, snobby, full-of-themselves, treating-"commoners"-with-condescension, beautiful, rich, strapping young jerks.
And who in Real life wants one of those? Sure we watch them in dramas, b/c we love the knowledge that they will change. In real life, you can't marry a man and expect him to actually change for the better... just my 2 cents.

alot of people around me actually change into positife way when they get married. They feel born again after they getting married.
my point is... we can't judge so easily if THIS (story in kdrama) will happen or not in real life just based on our experience alone

'senator’s son' meh....but duke, don't you love duke? I love duke...and I love super rich hero and super poor heroine. It's like dream come true. Never get bored of Cinderella 's story. But why do I feel these two are too old for this kind of story?

KTH looks a lot of Song Hye Gyo here. While SHG isn't the strongest actress, she still managed to win a lot of hearts with Full House. Maybe this can also be the case?
I read romance novels, and there are definitely too many dukes. In the past, they try to spread them around to earls, viscounts, marquesses, even barons... but dukes have exploded...maybe it's because of the lack of security in our current economy?
Why can't drama heroes be guys with a steady, middle-class income and be the grandsons/sons of someone nondescript? or have them be poor and hardworking so we can see them flex their muscles and walk around shirtless? How many uber rich companies are there for these young guys to own? I haven't been to Korea, but it has always been my impression that Samsung and Lotte owns half of South Korea.
for the real life chaebols- they have a lot to live up to.
and can you still be that rich if you only own a few department stores (referring to hyun bin's character in secret garden - he is obscenely rich when you think abt how much money he fritters away just to one-up his cousin all the time)?

let's see.. Pasta, 9E2O, DG Chun Hyang, Really Really Like You, Worlds Within,
Do those drama count Javabeans? Girlfriday? Watchathink?
Oh and MSOAN!! both are ordinary people, not chaebol..

yeah why can't they make dramas like both are poor - it's mostly one is a chaebol & the parents are in disagreement towards their relationship coz either he or she is from a poor or not highly educated family! i luv kdramas but they ought to change some of their generic style such as going to the airport last minute to stop him/her from going somewhere, either it's a cinderella type of story etc. This one seems to be like that reading the synopsis. :)
thnx for sharing JB - i do like song seung hyeon he's one of my faves!
