Sungkyunkwan producers would also like an extension
by javabeans
With its adorable and heartwarming storylines, not to mention engaging cast, Sungkyunkwan Scandal has attracted a mighty fanbase that belies its modest ratings numbers (although those have been steadily climbing as well). As a result, it has been flooded with fan requests for extensions, and even despite it being late in the game (with only this week and next week remaining), producers have also spoken up to say that they’d be eager for one as well.
First off, the caveat: Don’t get your hopes up. We can hope, but I don’t think an extension is forthcoming with the obstacles it would have to overcome in a very short period of time.
With that said…
To compare the fan fervor of Sungkyunkwan Scandal to other popular dramas, the source article compares the online activity from the first 16 episodes (which is what Sungkyunkwan had aired as of the article’s publish date) of various dramas. Sungkyunkwan’s official homepage message board has more than 120,000 messages posted by fans, which is triple the response of Chuno, four times as many as Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and twice as many as IRIS.
Additionally, the drama’s board at popular portal DC Inside has 160,000 messages. It is DC Inside’s second-most-active drama board, next to uber-hit Boys Before Flowers.
It’s interesting to note that those other dramas all hit 30% ratings (with Baker King topping 40%), while Sungkyunkwan started off at a modest 6.3% and has steadily risen to its highest number last Tuesday, 14.3%. (It was aided by the departure of long-running Dong Yi.)
The fans who are eager for more of their drama crack point out that the love story between Yoon-hee (Park Min-young) and Sun-joon (Micky Yoochun), with only three episodes left after today’s broadcast.
The CEO of production house Lemon Rain, Kim Dong-rae, said, “It’s a story that can easily be extended, by ten episodes or any number. Even in this situation, we could add another four. We’d like to do it, if only the actors would agree, but it’s difficult because if the production period goes on for longer than planned, it interferes with their schedules.” He added that it’s disappointing to end it this way.
What would he like to do in the hypothetical situation of an extension?
Kim said, “We would be able to get deeper into the emotions of Moon Jae-shin (Yoo Ah-in), and expand on Lee Sun-joon and Kim Yoon-hee’s story. Aside from the love story, there’s a lot of plot about the academic angle. There’s so many good stories to tell that I’m sure we could really make a great drama, but realistic conditions aren’t supportive.”
The difference between extending a drama like Dong Yi and Sungkyunkwan Scandal is because the former is longer-running, has sufficient time to establish its presence, and consequently draws in enough advertising money that the stations are eager to capitalize upon. Miniseries, however (20 episodes or less), often find themselves hurting financially with extensions, and production companies are less likely to move forward with them. (Plus, despite the show’s online popularity, mid-teen ratings are usually not considered high enough to be worth the broadcaster’s while.)
This is why it’s unusual for Sungkyunkwan’s producers to be so willing to take that financial risk, and to declare themselves ready to forge forward with full confidence.
The sticking point remains the cast, and in particular lead actor Micky Yoochun, who is about to embark on an Asian tour with his pop group JYJ. Initially the drama was scheduled to conclude filming at the end of September, but that has already been pushed back once and conflicted with his schedule.
A few more statistics that attest to the drama’s popularity (as if we didn’t already know): The OST has sold over 120,000 albums, and the episodes have been seen online from KBS’s homepage 190,000 times (compared with Chuno’s 150,000 and Baker King’s 130,000).

LIGHT BULB flicks on!
The answer would be to have a season 2!!!!!!
They cannot continue filming not because there is no viable story or that an extension would do more damage than good with the drama's plot lines, but because the actors are already committed on something after episode 20. The production already said that they have enough story for 10 episodes. And someone mentioned here before that the drama did not cover the whole of the drama until the last volume or something like that. So they still have a lot of plot/story to go on to if they did decide to extend.
So... if the production and broadcast station are both looking favorably at extension.. why not push back filming for episode 21 until episode X when the actors are free?
GO GO GO for SEASON 2!
Is it too early to ask for a christmas present?

Yoo Ah In shi, a second stint at the beloved Guh Ro will cement fan love to the extent that we'd all worship the very ground you walk on. That's like gold credit for all your future projects. We will come out in droves to watch your movies and watch all your dramas, especially the Korean ones bc they'll buy the korean movie tickets and affect the ratings.
Even better good sir, you'll become the biggest Hallyu star of the second (third?) wave. Everyone knows SKKS was sold to Asian countries for an obscene advance due to Yoo Chun's popularity! But you, sir, are THE breakout star! =)
Indulge us one last time! We love you!!

I really want an extension because I think the PDs can do the story more justice with a couple more episodes. However I highly doubt an extension is feasible because not only is Micky's group JYJ going on an Asian tour, but some of those stops on that tour on in the United States. With the last four tour dates being in early/mid November, HI (10th), NY (12th), Las Vegas (14th), Los Angeles (19th) they would have to not only make a decision on the extension soon but they would also have to shoot the extension episodes in addition the two they still have left all before November 9th which is nearly impossible to do.

I know there are a lot of Yoonhee-Sunjoon supports because it seems as if most people agree that they fit well together... but an extension seems impossible for Yoochun considering this tour I've been reading about. That's ok if he's busy, that just means more time for Jaeshin to get the girl. Or for Yongha to get his man (Jaeshin) which is what happens in one version of my personalized SKKS fantasy endings hehe. Woot!

Yeah, not sure how I feel about this, even if it did happen. From what I understand, extensions make for a degeneration in plot tightness and general quality. These writers have been doing so well, though, that I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, what about Yong-ha? How about his hijinks? Sure, it's cool to have him be mysterious, but I want to know.

Is it more common in kdramas to just extend, instead of doing a slight break (like a version of the US-summer when all we get are reruns) and then starting it up again? Or taking a break and then doing a "SKKS II" (sequel) instead -- or are those options really unusual for kdramas? I'm just curious why they'd want an extension when doing a so-called sequel seems like it'd be more realistic, schedule-wise.

October 26, 2010 at 12:51 AM
Yes, extensions are more common than sequel seasons. It isn't a super common thing to have multi seasonal serials in korean dramas. It has happened for a few rare dramas, but I'm of the opinion that they were more procedural in nature? Like General Hospital with Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jung Eun getting a second, and School (writer Song Ji Na, Jang Hyuk debut - like three seasons, but different cast). There are pros and cons to this system of broadcast.
More than an extension, a second season sounds LOVELY for SKKS. And, given the response, people would definitely tune in for the second season if only to hang out with these characters again. =)

I like the idea of extension . 2-4 more episode is perfect for this series~
There are so many things from SKKS we need to discover more
- SJ-YH story. I want to see more of their moments together.
- More Yong Ha's past stories and potential new love line for him lolz . Someone even more perfect than Yoonhee, who can change our playboy's heart. I suggest someone famous cameo for this role ^^ Would be fun.
- Of couse we cant forget Moon Jae Sin. He deserved to be loved too . Give him a happy ending too, PD nim.
I's so heartbreaking to see him look at Sun Joon and Yoon Hee with that sad smile " as long as you are happy, It's okay if I'm getting hurt"
Want to know more about his long time friendship with Yong Ha. How they know each other etc
- Also I feel curious about Insoo and Cho Sun past too. I want to know more about them. It would be very interesting if Insoo is actually ChoSun's first love but she has to pretend that she hated him because she need to protect of her family. And what would happen when Insoo discover that ChoSun is the fake Hong Buyk Soo. Will he save her by pretending to be the second fake Hong Buyk So? Oh my imagination kilss me!!!
So much moreeeeee !!!

actually, i'm against an extention for now. not that i don't want one, but i always have to cringle when i see those enormous eye bags under yoochun's eyes as well as tiredness in the others faces. They are already filming nonstop to be able to air the last episodes on time, how should they cope with even more episodes??
Rather then an extention, i would like to "demand" a second season, with an as-brilliant-as-from-the-first-season script, and rested staff and actors.
But man, if they decide against an extention/second season, it will be such a pity. So many things they didn't show the audience yet (not only more SJ-YHee, but the past from all characters, expecially from IS and CS!!)

Ok, I too am not a fan of extensions but having spoiled myself of episode 17 live recap (thanks to Softy from thundie's prattle) I'm afraid that there are just too many loose ends needed to be tied and with just 3 episodes more to go it's like--but I hope not--they're not enough to end this series nicely...but like I said, I hope that's not the case and I do trust the production team to make it work, for it will be such a terrible waste to invest so much in something that has started very good only to find it end floppily (like what happened to CS and PT, grumble).

Season 2 is the best bet. I am loving season 1 right now. We want more for the other characters of the Jalgeum Quartet, exploration galore. In season 2 provided that LSJ and YH gets married, can be placed in the background with more focus on the other 2. LSJ and YH/YS can be more actively involved in the adventures to a lesser extent for season 2, I like that. I also think of YH/YS introducing a new girl to MJS, the one he ends of loving has potential. There is so much to do with this drama.

Extension please!!!!!!!
But taking JB's advice, I'm not putting my hopes up high since extension is highly impossible given micky's schedule, and it's so hard to find a season 2 of kdrama (that follows the same storyline), and a spin off usually ends up being a disappointment compared to the original one (although I'd watch it anyway hehe).
Having said that, I have to be content with what we have in hand, as of now.
But if ever, it manages to have an extension, I'd be the happiest addict on earth!

I am enjoying this drama tremendously, however, let's leave on a high note with the fans wanting more. If they extended the drama to 10 episodes, for example, it would draggggggg and loose its charm. (Maybe 2 more would work...) For me, the main leads are not strong actors and cute scenes only carry a viewer so far before it becomes meaningless and just cute. Now, I would love to see YAI as a lead in another drama. I want him to get the girl!!!! Soon Joong Ki in another drama too please... These two characters/actors has left an impression on me.

Hmm, to be honest, I think sometimes less is more and this is a good example. I've seen so many shows where they've self-destructed, where showrunners have ruined what made them so good in the first place, all because they didn't call it a day when it was the right time to do so.
Although I do have some questions that have been left unanswered, I'm quite happy to let my imagination fill in the gaps.
But most importantly, I don't trust them not to ruin Yong-Ha! His ambiguity is what makes him such an intriguing, exciting character. And as someone whose chief investment in the series is his relationship with Jae-Shin, a relationship I interpret to be one of unrequited romantic love, I fear an extension would lead to a heteronormative "happy" ending. Probably with Hyo-Eun. Which, yes, I admit it, would ruin the whole show for me!
Personally, yes, it hurts to say goodbye, but I'd rather say it now and let the show go out on a high, as 20 episodes of pitch perfect television.

Extension is too late, I think.. Mary Stayed Out All Night already advertised that it's on Nov. 8..
BUT, I wouldn't mind a Sequel though!! WOOT!!! =) Jae Shin needs his happy ending =)

I LOVE this drama, so I wouldn't necessarily mind an extension. However, I'm a bit worried that the extension would simply focus on Yoon Hee and Sun Joon, which, as much as I like them, was the most dull part of the storyline for me.

I don't really mind extensions, or if they decide against it. Maybe just 1 or 2 extra episodes, or maybe a movie that starts off from the time they all leave Sungkyunkwan?
It'd be nice to see little uptight Sunjoons running around, or girl-looking boy Yonhees. I'd like to see more of Jaeshin's gruff charisma, too, and more of Yongha's schemes.

Instead of extending this season, why don't they make a season 2. Then we can get even more of it, it will extend 12 episodes instead of 4. Plus they have time to write a better story instead of being in a rush to add more. Just a thought.
