Playful Kiss: Episode 12

I won’t lie. This episode was not easy to recap. I don’t have stellar expectations for this show to begin with, so I’m usually easy to please when it comes to Playful Kiss. Be cute. The end. But this episode left me shaking my fist in the air, and wanting to revoke Ha-ni’s membership from…being a GIRL.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Mom asks Seung-jo to move back home and stop giving Ha-ni such a hard time. Seung-jo tells her that he left precisely to get away from her attempts to control him. He notes that she never asked him what he wanted when she brought Ha-ni back into the house, bringing Mom near tears.

After he leaves, she frets that he’s left home to discover his own path, but nothing has actually changed in his life. Dad tells her to wait it out for him to figure things out on his own.

Min-ah and Ju-ri come by for lunch, telling Ha-ni about a high school reunion, complete with a school-uniform dress code. But, didn’t they graduate, like yesterday? Ha-ni gets weak in the knees thinking about Seung-jo back in his high school uniform.

She finds him at school to tell him about it, and he brushes her off coldly, saying that he doesn’t know who came up with such a childish idea, but he’s not interested. Ha-ni mumbles to herself as he walks off, “How can I possibly know what’s in that head of yours?” Yeah, you’re not the only one who’s wondering, as the comments in this thread’ll tell ya.

He hears her and turns around to give her the stink eye, and walks off.

Mom suggests a scheme to get Seung-jo to the reunion. Gah, this is why he’s running away from you. Maybe you want to give the scheming a rest for a while, till he stops pushing Ha-ni away because of your “plans”?

Ha-ni gets dressed in her old school uniform, getting nostalgic for the good old days, even taking out her D-minus love letter and remembering it fondly.

At the event, Ha-ni rubbernecks around for Seung-jo, finding him sitting alone in his regular clothes, complete with sour look of disdain. She heads over and he coughs up her house keys, completing his mom-assigned task with little desire to humor her further. Although it does make me wonder: if you hate being controlled so much, then why do you always do as she asks, knowing exactly why you’re being asked to do it? Not that I don’t know the power of the Korean Mother’s Request For Favors. They’re not requests—they’re thinly-veiled commands from up high, couched in social graces. It’s like if Noriega used words like “please” and “thank you.”

Ha-ni tries to get Seung-jo to stay and have some fun since he’s here anyway, (grabbing his wrist) but he shakes her off and leaves curtly. But not two feet away, when his classmates greet him, he joins them at a table, smiling and chatting like a person not made of inorganic metal parts.

Unsurprisingly, his friends from high school are the cream of the crop smartypants boys from good families, who all went to Taesan University, where Seung-jo missed his interview that day. They see Ha-ni across the aisle and assume that they’re really dating now, making her smile. But Seung-jo, still angry, and well, being Seung-jo and all, flatly denies it, saying, “I don’t keep those sorts of things [girlfriends].”

Ha-ni glares and pouts, then stalks away, and Seung-jo clocks her every move. You passive-aggressive little snot.

At the gathering, Bye Bye Sea gets introduced as Bye Bye Sea, now having officially become a band after high school. While they play, Ha-ni notes that Seung-jo is brooding in the corner, lost in his thoughts. He’s angsting over what to do with his life, now confronted with the fact that his classmates have all chosen majors while he’s still undeclared, and they suggest that he simply rest on his laurels and inherit his father’s company.

The next time Ha-ni looks up, he’s gone. She takes the coat he left behind and heads home, wondering what was on his mind.

Seung-jo heads to his apartment, stopping outside to think over his father’s wishes for him to follow in his footsteps, and Ha-ni’s suggestion that he become a doctor.

Ha-ni shows up behind him with his jacket, (which he totally left there on purpose, subconsciously) asking him to unload on her: “They say that if you share something bad it splits in half, and if you share something good, it doubles.” He smiles at that, and as Ha-ni waits expectantly, he gets up to announce his decision: he will be going pre-med.

Well, duh.

Ha-ni is shocked, though, not knowing of course the extent to which she influences him. He just makes her promise not to say anything to anyone yet. ‘Cause that worked so well last time. She watches him walk away curiously, breaking into a smile when she realizes that she’s the only one on this planet who knows this about Seung-jo. Oh, the power of secrets.

Kyung-soo is planning a Top Spin ten-year anniversary party, and in order to get He-ra to attend, the other club officer (a great side character who I wish we saw more of) tells him to just get Seung-jo to come. For that, he needs Ha-ni, naturally. She doesn’t want to keep using Seung-jo as bait for He-ra, but Kyung-soo pleads with her, and sends her literally into Seung-jo’s path.

She tells him that his dad went to the hospital today for a check-up, and Seung-jo heads home to see the results. He reads the chart and deduces that Dad needs to watch out for his heart health. Mom cuts Dad off from sweets or fried foods, making him pout like she cancelled Christmas.

Ha-ni arrives at Dad’s restaurant to find Joon-gu hard at work on his first official dish that’s going to be served to customers. Dad praises him for his talent and dedication, making Ha-ni see him in a new light. Well it’s about time! She stares at him intently, saying that she’s only known him to be a slacker, but this is the first time she’s ever seen him do anything so diligently. Except love you? But you wouldn’t know about that.

Duckie’s made her a lunch spread fit for kings, and I’m having serious food envy right now. He’s on pins and needles awaiting her verdict, and she takes one bite…”DAEBAK!” Duckie pretty much dies of happiness right then and there.

At school, Ha-ni approaches He-ra with some trepidation, but she asks if she’ll be attending the Top Spin party (No) and whether she’s picked a major. One-track mind, this girl. She’s concerned that He-ra might follow Seung-jo all the way to med school. He-ra, in a surprising moment of clarity that makes me respect her, laughs at Ha-ni’s silliness, saying that she’ll choose her major based on what SHE wants to do…because it’s HER life.

Thank you! Finally a girl with some sense! I know, I normally love to despise this girl, but here she’s a great example for Ha-ni, who’s got some serious growing up to do, in this respect. But then to set the world back on its proper axis, He-ra finishes it off with her trademark condescending bitchiness, petting Ha-ni on the head like a child. Ha-ni frowns as she watches He-ra go, admitting to herself that in this one way, He-ra’s pretty impressive. I certainly hope it encourages you to ask what YOU want to do with your life…other than love Seung-jo, that is.

She runs into Seung-jo on campus, and tells him that He-ra, all of her friends, even Duckie, are all figuring out what they want to do with their lives, but she…isn’t. Well then shouldn’t this be lighting a fire under your ass?

She tells Seung-jo that she does have a dream. It’s to…be his nurse when he starts a little medical practice somewhere. Or to be a stewardess if he becomes a pilot. Or a caddy if he becomes a golf pro.

THUNK. That would be the sound of my opinion of you…dropping so far into the Earth’s core that it came out the other side.

Seriously? What in the WHAT, now? Did you really just say that your Big Life Plan…is to follow Seung-jo around for the rest of your life and be his assistant, his secretary, his token lackey? Why the FRAK did you go to college to get a first-rate education, then??

VOMIT.

I’m ashamed of you right now. I know it’s harsh, but that’s the truth.

Seung-jo smiles and tells her that she’s got unrealistic goals, but they’re her dreams, and very Ha-ni-esque ones at that. He pats her on the back and tells her that the unreachable dreams are ones fighting for.

He gets called home by Dad, who pitches a fit at finding out that he’s chosen to be a doctor. Yeah, that’s not unrealistic at ALL, Show. Dad is heartbroken over Seung-jo’s flat refusal to inherit the family company, so much so that he actually has a heart attack.

Oh, GOD. Really, Show? We’re just careening off the deep end today, are we?

Needless to say, Dad’s stress-related heart condition is enough to get Seung-jo to go in and help run the company in Dad’s absence, and move back into the house. In an amusing bit of meta, the second he walks in, the two women in the office swoon and call him Yonsama. Haha.

Ha-ni relishes playing the housewife (sigh) to Seung-jo while the parents are in the hospital. Eun-jo whines about the abundance of inedible food at the dinner table, but Seung-jo doesn’t make one complaint about her horrible cooking, and eats it, knowing how hard she worked. Okay, that’s adorable.

She calls Dad to ask him how to make an egg side dish, and Duckie overhears that Ha-ni is packing Seung-jo’s lunch. Seung-jo reluctantly takes the lunch that Ha-ni made after hearing that she woke up at the crack of dawn to make it, and smiles when he opens it up.

Duckie comes in, having tracked Seung-jo down at the office, and hands him a new lunch, one that he made instead. Seung-jo lets Duckie run off with Ha-ni’s lunch, since well, he saved him from having to actually eat it. Heh.

Duckie sits in the park with Ha-ni’s lunchbox, eager to taste her cooking, despite his mood sagging when he sees the heart-shaped food. He takes a bite…and wonders if Ha-ni actually hates Seung-jo. HAHAHA.

Seung-jo sits up late that night, and tells Ha-ni that Dad isn’t doing well, and he’ll probably have to undergo surgery. He’ll have to stay at the company, and give up his med school dreams.

Ha-ni tells him that he can’t—it’s the first time he’s ever found something he’s wanted to do. He can’t give that up. But Seung-jo is doing the dutiful thing, and even though he doesn’t enjoy working for his father, he knows it’s the right thing to do. Ha-ni reminds him of his graduation promise—to have fun. Seung-jo says that he’ll have to sacrifice that in order to make others happy (the other half of the promise).

Ha-ni sweetly back-hugs him, knowing that it’s all she can do.

At school, He-ra deduces what Seung-jo is doing to help his family, and goads Ha-ni about not being able to do anything but follow him around and say empty words. That spurs Ha-ni to get a job at the company, and follow Seung-jo to work. Gah, I’m getting really tired of this same plot pattern being used over and over again. It’s the same dynamic and nothing changes.

Seung-jo meets with a potential investor, who takes a liking to him instantly, so much so that he asks for Seung-jo to meet his granddaughter. What, now you have to prostitute yourself for Dad’s company? This is going to a weird place. Did we step into a different drama?

Seung-jo shows up to the blind date, and who should be sitting there? Why He-ra of course. Who didn’t see that coming?

COMMENTS

Well, it looks like He-ra’s pulling out the big guns, but I’m pretty sure this is the move that’ll get her black-balled. I mean, Seung-jo isn’t exactly the corporate-merger-arranged-marriage type. I foresee some angst for Ha-ni, who is faithfully taking care of Seung-jo at home. I’m pretty sure if I were doing that much cooking, I’d be pissed that he was getting his kicks elsewhere with the she-witch from Whoville.

I’m so glad that Duckie has turned a new leaf, and has become passionate about something other than just loving Ha-ni. Note how it’s at that moment that Ha-ni starts to see him differently. That’s exactly what I want for Ha-ni too—to grow and become her own person, find her own dreams and desires. Because right now I see why Seung-jo isn’t shouting her name from the rooftops. Her entire identity is wrapped up in him, and it’s starting to show at the seams.

I know this has been the case for Ha-ni from the beginning, but now that DUCKIE the perennial slacker has found purpose in his life, her lack of such…pales in comparison. I certainly hope that Ha-ni gets the same sort of character development that the male characters are getting, because if she doesn’t, we’ll have WORDS, Show.

To be honest, her lack of oomph on that front kind of killed my love for her in this episode. I’m hoping that it’s part of her arc, and that she’ll be growing. I just want to believe that, because if all she does is fulfill her current dream…I may vomit from the implication that that’s…enough. I frankly don’t have that much hope for her now, which makes the rest of it (her winning Seung-jo in the end) less satisfying, if that’s ALL she’s about.

Duckie’s development highlights again the pot-lid metaphor, because when she began to take him seriously, I thought, wouldn’t it be perfect if the two characters who were so devoted in love…could love each other? But then that’s the whole point—why they’re not meant to be—because they’re both lids. Or pots. Whichever. They’re of the same mold, which makes them redundant, to each other. It’s not necessarily a belief I hold in real life, but I like what the drama is doing with it as a romantic throughline, because it’s a great point narratively. It makes character differences interesting, and not just as motivations for clashes. It’s the puzzle idea—that two people need to be complementary to fit together, not shaped the same way. In that respect I do enjoy the relationship between Seung-jo and Ha-ni, as they continue to complement each other. I just wish that it wasn’t always Ha-ni matching herself to Seung-jo. I want her to form her own piece, and for Seung-jo to try and match her once in a while too.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to say thank you for all your commentary here and JB+GF for offering us this space to say our thoughts. Its like group therapy really. :)

And yes, we may not all see eye to eye but its great that we are taking it a step further instead of just saying, "OMFG, KHJ is soooooo hot!" or "I h8 hr she's so annoying".

So now, let's just agree to disagree ne? Sit back and enjoy the show. At the end of the day, it's just a drama and whatever we take out of it, is purely our own and no one else's.

*** spoiler from ep 13 preview ***

On a shallow note:
THAT KISS!

I stopped breathing for a moment. I think smelling salts are too mild. We might need an oxygen tank.

Or just speed dial 911. Ha.

I haven't looked at many comments, so I might just be repeating things, but these are my thoughts:

I liked this episode, because I thought it was when Hani realized that her life was kinda pathetic. She saw what Joonggu was doing, and what Hera thought, and she was impressed, so I think she wants to find a career path that doesn't revolve around Seungjo. I know she said that she wanted to be a nurse if he was a doctor, a stewardess if he was a pilot, etc, but to me, she sounded kind of embarassed when she was saying it, like she was disappointed in herself. So I think (and HOPE HOPE HOPE!) that she'll find something she loves, which'll make Seungjo realize her true worth, in the remaining 4 episodes.

Why does she have to find something else to do to be worthy as a person or a woman? Is that really necessary?

I'm not saying this because I'm like her. I've never depended on men or anything and I've always gone my own way too.. but does that make her less of a woman or less deserving of love simply because she really loves this guy and HE is her dream?

If anything Seung Jo starts to love her because of her personality, not anything else. If she really just needed to go get a hobby and be perfect and independent, Seung Jo would have ended up with He Ra.

It's not about worth at all but a person should treat herself with respect. Why pine away for someone, put your life on hold, etc... for something that may not come true? Love is about respect and equity. Don't give too much or don't give too little.

Okay.. so replace Seung Jo with a "career", something with more "self-respect". It's just at temporary because you can always lose your job. It's not like people die once that's gone. They just have to learn to move on. I'm pretty sure she could too.

All the reasoning...something may not come true, pine away for someone, put life on hold, don't give too much or too little.
All of that is Fear.

Oh no no, if she found something outside of BSJ, realized that she needed to demand some respect from BSJ, she would be the same HaNi, the one who is optimistic and awesome but who isn't dependent on a guy.

And it doesnt make her less of a woman, but a dependent person, which doesn't match up with her character, it really doesn't

I rather thought Seung Jo loves Hani because in her he finds someone who will never leave him no matter what. Isn't that an issue he's grappled with since he was young? ..when all his friends left him after they found out he'd been cross-dressing (his mom did it).

Sometimes I think all the mean stuff he did or said to Hani is a series of tests designed to see whether she'd leave him.

I Agree.
Ha-Ni is the best thing that's ever happened to him.

Outside, Baek Seung Jo may be a beautiful genius.
Inside, he's a wounded boy and a lonely, confused young man.

harsh comment right there>>>

SJ matches up to what HN told him though BECOMING A DOCTOR
HN is not smart and i bet she doesn't know what she wants to do, she just goes with the flow...like going to university is finding what she wants so she will not regret latter

then if her dreams are to be around SJ, then it's up to her as long as she tries and has the efforts to achieve them
Like being a nurse is easy.. NO!! that requires education too. That's why she got an education!!!!

People's life aren't about being something, blah blah blah
at least she lives her life with fun, doing her best, loving people fully, being a good daughter, and how she makes the people around her happy.

A BIG YES TO THAT ! There is much much more to life than achieving something or trying to be something.

I just don't think he deserves her, it's like your one friend who is with that guy who doesn't appreciate her enough and you want to tell her but she doesn't listen. That is HaNi for me, a girl who is so optimistic, who is could do more than wanting to be with some guy who does not deserve her (right now, if he stops being mean, then yeah, right on, let the BSJ and OHN lovin begin!).

And because I think she hasn't really taken a step away from him, and for you guys to say that there is nothing wrong with her wanting to just be by his side would be true, if she had tried to figure out if this is all she wants. She hasn't once strayed from this, hasn't really tried something for herself.

The thing that confuses me about the drama is how Ha-ni started to love Seung-jo. Did I miss an episode or something? Because I can't recall a time when the series backtracked to a day when Seung-jo helped a lady cross a street or something and that made Ha-ni like him. Why does she like him? Is it just because he's smart and handsome? Seriously?

And yeah, this episode was like a WTF ARE YOU KIDDING ME? moment. I had passed the feeling of not understanding her motivation towards him and then this happens.

Just want to say I was a little surprised that the mystery grand-daughter was He-ra. And I was only surprised because PK, so far, has been following ISWAK prettty closely, so I was expecting the third chick to be introduced and waiting for Ha-ni and He-ra to kind of band together to try and get rid of her. But I can see why they'd choose to just keep He-ra as the only alternate love interest... it's not like they really have a lot of time to introduce another person, where ISWAK kind of did, since it was twice as long as this..

Thanks for the recap!! I actually really appreciate this story a lot no matter how many people bash its characterization of women. We forget that while most of us constantly strive to get further because of our own personal driving forces that other people just want to have simple dreams and live simple lives. I feel like it's mean to tell a 21st century girl no, you cannot be a housewife even if you want to. And I completely disagree that Ha-ni is a weak character.

In her statement that she would become his aid to whatever he became, we're forgetting that for her, it would take a lot of skill to get there. She keeps striving to reach the highest point she can to always be there for Seung jo, and that's her character growth, and the fire for her dreams.

In some weird way, through each other they're finding themselves. It's more beautiful than people give it credit.

imagine how not weak she would be if she tried something hard just for herself and not for BSJ...what can I say, I'm not wooed enough by BSJ. I feel like has this string which guides her that is BSJ, but the thing about growing up is straying away from things like that and she hasn't. If she does and still chooses to go back to him, okay, but no.

More Rave---
Maybe at first the relationship between these two was a one-side affair. But at this stance, although SJ is still in his somewhat semi-robot stupor, he is apparently as hooked on Ha Ni as she is on him. On several occasions, Ha Ni was building her resolution to readily forget and decisively give up SJ for his cold hurtful reception. But her resolve always gets pushed back because of SJ actions like those stolen kisses and flirting moments. Bottom line, SJ refuses to let Ha Ni go. Although it seems he does not acknowledge her, those kisses and snap retorts obviously shows he’s keenly aware of her. That’s the attraction and addiction pull of this drama – that’s why I love it!!

Yeah.. no matter what, Seung Jo has NEVER been indifferent toward her. :)

Like he says later. "I'm (Seung Jo) the one you love. You can't love anyone else." It's kind of a double meaning.

1) She really isn't capable of loving anyone else & He knows it.
2) He can't LET her love anyone else... just him.

He constantly plays with her, yes, but it's more like a little kid pulling the pigtails of the girl he likes.

You know you have to admire Seung Jo. I know his words and actions could be mean sometimes.... but when you think about it, he is a really good and loving person towards her because there are a lot of guys out there that would take horrible advantages of a girl that's as devoted as Oh Hani.

That alone make her devotion more justified.

In addition, there really isn't anything wrong with matching your life with the one you love either. Her choice in life isn't Seung Jo per say but her choice in life is to focus on those she loves most. This just happens to be him but I'm sure it includes others like her father, her friends, Seung Jo's mother, etc. That is her character - selfless love.

The most important thing is she knows what she is doing. She knows who she is and she is just more frank about it. Not many people are that honest with themselves and courageous enough to risk it all.

Her dream is equivalent to deciding to be a housewife and devote herself to her family. I'm sure that if she ends up with Dukie, her final career would suited to him being a chef. That isn't bad if you are happy doing it... happy with making others happy. It's even better that she is talented enough to surround herself with those who, in their own ways, appreciate that part of her. When you think about it, most partner career/choices tends to be compatible with the other. Those relationships lends itself to more stability. You can't fault her for this.

As for Seung Jo, him matching with Oh Hani is just not as frank and revealing. In my opinion his matching is more on the emotional level. Self-sacrificing and caring, he starting to think more about others... which is her forte. Also, didn't she practically told him to be a doctor. If I remember the episode correct, it almost came out a 'Yes, because I told you to be a doctor, you should be'.

What I like most is within out formalizing anything, their relationship reached a level of true trust and sharing of thoughts. It is not making it official that drives us to hate Seung Jo so much and make her seem more desperate/annoying. If they were in a more official relationship, I bet we would look at the situation a little differently. But it is nice that love can just fall into line so naturally...if it is meant to be..... my favorite aspect of the show.

Nice.

The fact that OHN herself finds it to be pathetic, yet she choose to stand by it. That's make a difference. She has thought about it, but she wants to do things based on her heart, even when her mind tells her that this is an embarrassing; a silly little dream. But heart wins again. If by development you mean that she started to think by her mind rather than her heart, then she loses that identity as well, the identity that defines her nature.

This ideal perhaps too overwhelming for most ppl as we have different level of tolerance and that the social standard is being set way beyond OHN reach.

So when we see such abnormality in values of life, do we choose to punish them? Ridicule them? Make fun of them? Vomit blood? OR we can choose to support them, rooting them, helping them.

It's a Utopia world for children, I guess...

Very good.

I'm one of those who don't mind Hani's stupidity (I think the fact that the writers give her more backbone and brain in this version are the root of the disappointment felt by many at this stage) and her lack of ambition.

I'm all for girl power, but not every girl has ambition, not every girl wants to be powerful. Some girl just want to be happy. And it might offend some of us but their happiness is not determined nor measured by what important position they hold or how much money they earn or how many degrees they have. Some would find happiness simply in being with the one they love.

I'm not upset with Hani at all.

I think she's powerful and admirable enough in her own way. She's strong enough to acknowledge what she really wants in life. And she works hard to get what she wants. We all see how high her ambition is. That guy is way beyond her reach. We all see how hard she has to work to get him.

And I love all SJ's little gestures which hint his feelings for her. He loves her too. He just can't deliver his feelings well. And let's not forget his mother!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, WHO GAVE HER SUCH A DIMWITTED CHARACTER?!??!

BTW, girlfriday, reading your reactions hilarious. I was with ya the whole way, man. Whole way.

Seung Jo is smart, rich, handsome, a good cook and cares for Oh Hani and his family in his own robotic way..Who would not be devoted? If you think about it,we should feel sorry for Seung Jo because he can have any girl he wants but he chooses Oh hani who cant cook, not so smart, not extremely pretty but the only thing she can do is to love him wholeheartedly. If I didnt know this story, she could actually be a schemer and not as un-smart as she appears to be. She doesnt go for just anybody, she goes for the main prize-thats not unconditional love since he is near perfect. Smart move on Oh hani's part dont you think?

If I'd be SeungJo, maybe people will judge me and told me "you are being ridiculous and so stupid for choosing somebody so beneath your own level!!!!" And if I'm him, maybe I'll cower and choose HeRa. But, ggooossshhh!!!!!! Won't I be so stupid if I have to live under other people's judgment rather than following my heart to choose to live with someone I love? I am trully admiring SeungJo's decision. And it's all about love right? The get someone that "click" with you. And it happens that SeungJo's lid is HaNi

Thanks GF for the recap. I've been waiting for it since Friday. I love reading the recaps and the comments. And there is plenty of comments appeared here with different opinions. I normally just sit back and enjoy reading but I just want to put my 2 cents on this one.

For me,(just my opinion) I actually love this episode. I specifically loved the bench part where SJ and HN talked and Hani confessed that her dream is just evolved around SJ. Though many think that she's very dependent and has no spine/backbone for such a dream/goal in life, I am quite impressed with her for honestly telling SJ even though she was quite embarrassed to realize it. She actually knows it and yet she chooses it. I think SJ actually love it. It's what he needed. I see it when he patted HN's back and saying those words. He was encouraging her to actually do what she dreams, in reverse psychology type way. He wanted her to pursue Nurse as well. He wanted her to follow him around. Because consciously and unconsciously, Hani has a very strong influence on him.

Hani's purpose in life is to be SJ's catalyst. We may see it negatively considering our generation of independent, career oriented, strong women. But back then and even to our generations, many still prefer to give up their careers to live their lives evolving around their husbands, children, parents/family. We all have purpose in life. And purpose for some is to be an influence to someone.

This is not weakness. This is not spineless/boneless decision. If that make that person happy to make their beloved happy, so be it. Who are we to criticize their decicions and dreams?

I actually envy Hani for being bold to her dream. She put her life to SJ. She trust and love SJ that much. I am scared to do that. I love my husband and my children and I want to serve them to make them happy, yet I am scared to give up my work/career. I am afraid to lose my 'identity'/ 'individuality'. I wanted to do it, but I am afraid that if I choose to live my life for my family, I might be insecured. I am the one who is spineless to think more of myself than to think what might make my family happy more.

This manga/drama is more than cuteness and love relationship between SJ and HN. There are decisions, family relationship, friendship, real life scenarios which we may faced. The Hani/Koyoko character might be annoying but it is relatable to some. She may be degrading herself in her ways but her perseverance and patience and other strong qualities are commendable.

Just my 2 cents.

U have any friends or know anyone who is like this? devoted to one man only? I know a few and they are intolerably boring to hang out with- all they talk and think about is their man and children, and they are not there for u as a friends when in need because they are too immersed in their lil world. They dont even take simple decisions like what they should cook for breakfast that day... sad man. Its not strong its just sad. perseverance is great patience is great - but not having a life is pathetic. She doesnot even talk to her friends really - always BSJ. when her friends are talking to her she is looking over their shoulders for BSJ. She looks at BSJ in her test instead of writing it??? strength? good??? really????

Maybe you think it's boring because it's not your cup of tea. When they talk about their family, are they happy about it? If they are, won't you be happy for them too? I do know some friends who graduated and practiced their respective careers but chose to give up to devote their entire time for their husbands and children. I am married as well same as them but I am working while they devote their lives for their family. I talked with them and the simplicity of life to focus on the happiness of their family also made them happy and more fulfilling as wives and mothers. That I envy them.

I always thought, I would be more fulfilled as a full time career woman while mother and wife at same time because I want to have my identity and self worth. But it's not fulfilling at all. I wish I am courageous enough to do same. I want to but I am afraid that if I stop working, I will be insecure. My husband would have been more happy if I stay home and look after my family. My children would be more looked after if I devote my time for them. That I know but am afraid to do so.Because I am a coward.

This drama also deals with this. We might think Hani's degrading, spineless woman because her life's dream and aspirations only revolves around Seong Jo. The fact that she knows this fact yet choosing to pursue it and even bold enough to tell and show Seong Jo her love and devotion, I think is brave and commendable. I think SJ loved it also. She has put direction into his life. I believe it has more positive effect on SJ that he encourages her to strive for that dream.

Just because it doesn't work for one doesn't mean it won't work on another. It dosn't mean that because you or me or somebody doesn't like that way, we criticize somebody else who chose that path.

Hani not having a life? Pathetic? Hani is living a life. I don't condone each and every act she makes(some over exagerrated and unrealistic), but her over all character is not pathetic at all. She is courageous to follow her heart, take the risk, be bold with her love to Seong Jo, yet considerate enough to the ones she loves. Yes, she also has many flaws( as everyone of us).But she is living her life for and with Seong jo. Because it's what makes her happiest. We should respect that choice.

How can you say that Hani doesn't talk to her friends? We are only shown snippets of her relationship with her friends. The focus after all of this drama is SJ-HN. But from those small snippets, I could tell that her bond with her friends is solid. Her friends know exactly her score with SJ. That means she talks to them. They were happy for her and they were concern for her. They act as true friends. They give her advice. Have you talked to your friends whom you call boring? Do you support/advice them?

OHN looking over the shoulders of her friends for Seong jo, watching Seong Jo during classes, going giddy and/or nervous. Every normal girl who has a big crush/ love nearby would act similar. I thought you would have experienced that.Or maybe I'm wrong. But these things don't make Hani pathetic and not have a life.

Better stop and sleep now.

Mojaslatka,

Please don't be so hard on yourself!

If I was your RL friend, I would encourage you to live your dream. Seriously. It would not be the choice I would make (don't want to get married, don't want kids) but you would have my support.

Fact is, you can always go get another job. But you only have one chance to raise your children. That's what I would tell you.

Many women struggle with balancing personal/professional demands. Many women work because their families would suffer financially if they didn't. You are facing the same dilemma as millions of other women (and probably quite a few men). So if you are a "coward," then you are certainly not alone.

From what I've seen around my neighborhood (I work from home so I am around during the day) there is a network of stay-at-home moms who meet routinely for kids' play dates and grown-up conversation.

No doubt these women struggle with the fear of losing their identities, too. Some may not feel 100% fulfilled from their choices but have sacrificed--as have their husbands/SOs/partners/whatevers--for the greater good.

You would find a group of like-minded women for support and sisterhood, if you decided to follow your dream.

Aja! Fighting! And ((HUGS)).

mojaslatka,
perfectly understand.. We career girls sometimes tie up our identity with our jobs..
and its really hard on us to balance family and job. You are not a coward!!! you cant say every stay at home mom is fullfilled. They are probably looking at u and thinking ah this woman has the guts to make her choice and work while I am stuck at home doing boring chores... u think that thought doesnot come to their minds... ? u know what- even if u did stay at home, ud probably have a life u know.. and an identity..
U know what annoyed me is not Hani wanting to be a house wife.. my mum is a house wife and devoted to family .. the difference between a house wife and hani like character is that house wife have a life, my mum paints, she has friends with whom she goes out.. she has an opinion which many times differs from my dad. Like she may vote for a candidate who my dad does not approve of.. u know.. like she has a brain and she uses it...
unlike my friend...who changed her saree twice one morning because husband din like her saree...she doesnot wear red because.... she is running at 8 in the night to the shop because someone wants to eat orca that night and we dont have it at home...doesnt wear lipstick becuase!!!... doesnot have friends because... loves dogs but never had a pet because..... Aahhhhhhh...come on! Its not the same as house wife.. its more pathetic than that.. never questions her husbands spending because.. he knows best.. doesnot decide where they should live..housewifes dont make me run up the wall! but this kind of behaviour surely does.
isnt hani that bad? She looks just as bad in the past few episodes.. Oh I dono such people may be happier.. Its like saying animals are happier in the zoo than in the wild... u know they are secure well provided for and looked after...but I and probably u wouldnt be happy living like that...

100% agree with you and u know what I watched that scene more than 10 times , I still don't think OHN's cofession to BSJ has anything todo with pride or anything else , OHN was clear and faithfull to her self and personaly I think she knows exactly what she wants which is to be always with and around BSJ .
which I loved more is BSJ's reaction to such confession : he wasn't mean and he didn't tease her but on the contrary he smiled and encoureged her to follow her dream even if se thinks it's hard to be fulfilled , becoz he also wants her to be always with and around him .

Oh man.
I was waiting for the recap of this episode, when I saw it (last week) I jumped out of my seat. Yes, Ha ni needs to find herself ASAP and stop being such a lackey.

...

But then I remembered my friend Alejandra. We have been friends since highschool and I never liked any of her boyfriends. Mostly because I always saw how they pulled her back, she never got to even start university because of the first one and now the second one lives in another province and wants her to move, leave everyone and everything behind, to stay at home with the kids.

YES!

Unthinkable to me but that's just because it's me.
As the years passed, I finally realized that's exacly what my friend wants. She wants to stay at home while the other person goes out to work in order to eat.
She would probably be more than happy to raise the child and clean the house, go out from time to time with friends.
Now I understand there is still women like my friend or Ha-ni whose world just goes around whent they have a man to chase or be with. It's OK. It's who they are, I don't judging but I do wonder if they ever really think about all the things they could do on their own besides being a wife or a mother.

See.. this is where I think people get it wrong and you've gotten in right.

If someone WANTS to do something and let someone else get in the way of doing that thing.. whether it's a dream, goal, whatever... then they are sacrificing too much and loss their self-worth

In this case, Ha Ni is still doing what she WANTS, she's not letting anyone take anything from her. Her goal, dream, passion is all him.

Everyone has different things they want to achieve so there is no point judging them for it just because it's not what we want in life.

however, in objective defense, hani's character is consistent with the taiwanese and japanese character. her SOLE PURPOSE IN LIFE IS TO LOVE HER MAN. totally old school japanese character for WIFE. =____=;;

this episode was all over the place. I'm confused because the last episodes had a guy swooning for Hani and it only lasted for half an episode and he was gone. Now she's back to chasing after Seung Jo.

And the fact of the typical pretty girl with connections trying to get the guy she wants is really annoying plus the fact that Hani doesn't have a life at all cause she's revolving her life around Seung Jo.

I was hoping the other guy would last at least a couple of episodes and take her away from Seung Jo for awhile. I'm glad that she did finally see Duckie in a new light because he's really got something special going for him. Even though she said she still doesn't like him as a guy.

It's because they are smashing a whole bunch of situations from the manga and trying to fit it into 16 episodes which is ruining everything.

Wow lots of serious debates going on. In my opinion PK is just an old fashion love story which I can relate to. Maybe secretly wished that was a BSJ look-alike that I could stalk 

Manga was written 20 years ago & was said to be based loosely on the author’s story, so add another 10 perhaps 15 years? So think of PK in the era of our parents’ teenage years, that kind of plot probably possible in those times.

I do know some viewers are glued to TV for thick even more unrealistic plots that involve scheming relatives, lies, murder, money, adultery etc. For me this doesn’t work!!

wow! it really is the story of our parents' teenage years. the mangaka was born in 1960 (actually my parents were born in the 50s, but..) - which means she was Ha-Ni's age around 1980. that makes it a 40 year difference in perspective. (and also sad that she died at 38 from hitting her head on a marble table which lead to a cerebral hemorrhage- similar to natasha richardson =*( )

I totally agree with you, girlfriday. One of the reasons I dislike this show is because of Hani. Oh, she's sweet and genuine and persistent. But that's it. She just wanders through life fixated on Seung Jo. If Seung Jo wasn't the lead character, if he wasn't quite as noble inside (as we know he is), if he was any less of a "prince" character ... Hani's life would have no meaning.

One of the things I liked about Geum Jan Di from BBF was that she had her own principles, her own dreams, her own goals. Perhaps she wasn't the genius or the model or the rich heir/ess. But she had a dream she wanted to pursue, and her own life to live.

It's great that Hani is so devoted to one man (as opposed to being fickle in love), but she has no sense of self, no independence. I was on her side when she proved that she was capable of taking on Seung Jo's bet to rise to the top 50 in the class and use the special study room. But since then, Hani hasn't challenged herself or thought of proving anything to herself.

And regarding Hera ... Dude, if I was Baek Seung Jo, if I had ANY tiny feelings whatsoever for that girl, they would be gone. If anything, I think that Seung Jo has pride. To allow his father's company to be saved by pretending to start a relationship with the investor's granddaughter ... Yeah. Whatever intelligence you had Hera just flew out the window.

i wanted to add... what if a dictatorship forbids pianist to play classical music? or dancers to dance? what if you're career-driven and loses your job? like if hani loses seungjo, it'll be an extremely hard time for those people...
and yes, some would get into depression and never get out of it... but MOST would gradually learn to move on...
hani does seem depressed after she learned that seungjo lived with haera but THEN, we could see her gradually trying to distance herself from seungjo, aka her dream, and try to accept the fact that she might not get what she wants... had seungjo ignored her and not explain the situation, she most probably would have moved on as well....
doesn't mean that they and she shouldn't begin to have a passion for it in the first place because they might lose it later on....
you do it because that's what you love...

Sometimes careers or goals just aren't possible either. Same as if he died... People move on.

0

I don't think it's love. I think you guys are missing the point. You can't compare her "devotion" to Seung Jo to a career/job or anything of that nature. It's totally different when it comes to a living, breathing human being.

Do you really think Ha Ni could move on? People define love different, but in my opinion her "love" is obsession. Does she even know what love is? For me, love is not dedicating yourself to someone and putting your life on hold. I hate to quote this, but if you really love someone then let them go, if they come back then perhaps it was meant to be.

Seung Jo can be an asshole and I do wish he would tell her straight up if he doesn't like her, but it's also her problem as well. She doesn't get it. Take the letter situation. If it was me, I would be so hurt by someone who totally disses me like that.

0

you know... she actually let's him go.... it just that he calls her back every single time she does...

0

You make a good point. True, BSJ is an all around prince and we as viewers know he has a good heart and actually loves Ha Ni deep down.

But Ha Ni doesn't know that - and she had no way of knowing what kind of person he was when she started liking him. And if it continued this way, with her giving her all and following him her whole life based on her infatuated love for him, that would be incredibly disturbing and wrong.

Still, I think that Ha Ni has spent enough time around Seung Jo now to know what kind of person he is. Initially, after he rejected and humiliated her, she did swear him off, and swear to get over him. But it was his own actions, and their interactions, that made her keep coming back to him. She has discovered things about him that she didn't know before. That he says mean things but he doesn't always mean them. That "geniuses have their own worries". That he had a pretty scarring experience as a child, which has made him socially remote and hard to reach. That he resents his mother's influence over his life. That he actually enjoys the disruption she brings to his life. That he shares what's on his mind with her, and takes note of her opinions.

I agree that he still has a long way to go to be worthy of her in an equal relationship, but I don't think Ha Ni is loving him with her eyes closed anymore. I think she fully realizes who he is, features and flaws, and she still wants to be with him forever.

She realizes that her dream of being his helper in whatever he decides to do is a bit messed up and kind of embarrassing, but she can't stop herself from wanting it. And in true Ha Ni fashion, she can't stop herself from admitting that to him, regardless of how he might react.

(Holy long comment! Sorry!)

I LOVE this recap! Its so nice to see someone getting mad at our female lead for once. A bunch of other reviews I see think that all of this stalking (and yes, it is legitimate stalking) is "cute" and "adorable". While sometimes it is, most of the time I just want Ha In to grow a backbone and fight back a little more. I get insanely mad that she has such little self respect and self confidence. The show doesn't have much more to go, so I hope she will get some balls fast and find herself, or Playful Kiss is just going to leave a bad taste in my mouth, like that piece of store bought birthday cake you knew you shouldn't eat, but oh it looked so good in the moment, and leaves you feeling unsatisfied and fat. Ok, this won't do the fat part, but unsatisfied? Yeah. Anyways, thanks for the awesome recap!

I totally agree with you GF. I wanted to shake some sense into her during her "dream/goals" scene but since I couldn't do that I just forwarded through it. It's disappointing, but I'm not surprise given the Taiwanese version. It's just so annoying. Why can't there ever be a plot line where the girl is smart, ambitious, but can still cute and sweet like Ha-Ni? I can't tolerate people who put their whole life on hold for someone who may or may not love them. Even then, if the person loves her, he wouldn't ask her to wait. But I guess I have to give Ha-Ni props for her devotion.

I agree with your point of view in opposition to those who wanna vomit over sweet and adorable Hani's dream. What's wrong with her dream, may I ask?
If she loves him so much, of course her dream is to be with him forever and that means she hope to marry him and play the supportive role of a wife in his life and her life.
If SJ sees no problem with that in fact he even said he'll help her make her dream come true. He is glad that her future dream is all about him, which guy wouldn't be moved by such loving devotion?

so I was trying to read all of the amazing comments on this recap but there are so many! and i have a headache, so staring at a computer screen isn't the best idea. Here's my two cents:

I don't think Hani is planning on being "dependent" on Seung-jo. Sure she's not "independent" in the sense that she's forging her own way in life without making decisions based on what other people are doing, but she isn't like she's going to marry him and sit around having his babies because that's what he would want her to do, and because if she did, he'd feed, clothe and house her. she does want to be good at something - just as long as it's something that helps Seung-jo. I don't think that's stupid - rather, it's selfless, and somewhat admirable, because she's not thinking solely about herself, but wants to live a life that's of use to someone other than herself. we may think that there are other, better ways to do it, but you know - let her live her life. Also, being with Seung-jo becomes her motivation to do things in life. The pot and lid metaphor has to go both ways - Seung-jo motivated her to get into college and do better in school; that's got to count for something, right? She hasn't completely lost out in this relationship. She still needs to grow up a little and see that she needs more motivation to do things than simply being someone else - it has to make her happy too. The fact that she's ashamed of it means that she's willing to change, and that she wants to change. So generally, I think we're being too hard on her. I know people who do stupid things for love - multiple times over - and one thing i've learned is that it takes time for people to learn lessons about themselves when all they can think of is the other person and what effect that person has on their emotions. Patience is necessary. As well as a few harsh words and maybe a good shake or two.

In terms of individuality, I don't think she's losing herself in her orbit of Seung-jo. In terms of what the story has given us, Ha-ni doesn't really have any specific interests of her own, but knows how to have fun regardless of what she's doing. Again, this is a way in which being with Seung-jo is good, because he directs her efforts. I personally am at a point where I don't know what the frack I'm doing with my life, and honestly, having someone I loved to motivate me to pick something and do something would be nice. Ha-ni knows she's floating at sea with no specific destination, and that bothers her. SO she grabs onto the one thing that she's certain of to steer her someplace - Seung-jo, even though she knows it's not enough. With this knowledge, I think that her suggesting medicine to Seung-jo works to her advantage, because it leads her, in a haphazard sort of way, to the career that's best suited for her - nursing. As some other commenter said, not everyone has a beeline path that they're sure of early on. Some people have to make mistakes and take hold of whatever lead they can find before they come across something that they can do for themselves. life is never what we plan anyway. people give up things for the sake of others, and that shouldn't be viewed as stupid. my mum decided not to get a PhD so that she could marry my dad, but never thought that she was giving up anything for someone else's sake - it was her decision so she could do something that would make her happy. she became a teacher as opposed to a university professor, so she could marry my dad, and have me and my four siblings. why is that so reprehensible - feminism, post-feminism or not? All Ha-ni knows right now is that being with Seung-jo makes her happy, so her efforts are directed towards that goal. is that so wrong? isn't that better than if she was aimlessly wandering through life with nothing to live for? it could be soooo much worse, people - so much worse.

In terms of healthy relationships: Seung-jo is mean, but he's also grown past a lot of things. he no longer embarrasses her publicly, or pushes her away. he's not dating another girl, yet stringing her around like some plaything. he's just yet to come around to his feelings, and realizing the need to respect hers a lot more than he does. The relationship may seem abusive, but honestly it's only in one aspect: the fact that Ha-ni stays with someone who hasn't (yet) shown that he feels the same way, and doesn't (yet) treat her with the same devotion and care. But we know he's capable of it, and eventually will change for the better. He already is. If he was really bad, we would know it, and Ha-ni would be in a much more dire situation than she is right now. Her actions would be bad for her IF she was in an abusive relationship, but she isn't. I've seen abusive relationships, and I feel like comparing Seung-jo and Ha-ni's relationships to those is just wrong. it's strong language that should be used in more appropriate situations.

either way, thanks for the recap, GF! I think we all want to see a little more growth from Ha-ni, so hopefully this week's episodes give it to us. These things always come in fits and starts anyway - only the best written dramas have the OTP characters grow side by side - usually it's a one by one thing, where one of the two's growth is the focus of an episode. again - patience is necessary.

I wouldn't call it abusive either, but I don't think he's done now he still has a long way to go, so that's why I kind of wanted her to step away from him, for both their sakes.

and I definitely agree with HaNi wanting to change because she is ashamed of the way she goes about things, and I know the feeling of being lost and not knowing what to do.

I'm really annoyed by this whole feminism, post feminism stuff being thrown around. Your mom went to college because she wanted to and she found another path (a lot of women can't even dream of going to college). But with HaNi, she chooses to stay on one path. I'll be happier when she realizes how happy she is with herself outside of BSJ.

And you have to realize how much privilege there is in being able to go to school and follow whoever you want. Not having to worry about that you need a job and finish school right away.

I actually do realize it. Full disclosure: my mom wanted to study Law in college, but had to study English instead because they would give her a full scholarship if she did - my grandparents couldn't pay for her to go to school. Afterwards she had to get a job so she went straight to work as a civil servant in the education sector, then eventually began to teach. Only after all this did she get a chance to do more studies, but then she met my dad. It's funny because now, unlike her, I get to choose what I want, and yet I'm struggling to find a path. If nothing else, her story motivates me to work hard at SOMETHING so that my parents efforts to get me whereIi am today won't be in vain.

I'll also be happier when Ha-ni finds joy in herself - I'm just saying we need to wait for it, and not call her things like "an insult to womanhood" or a "stupid girl". I think that narrows what should be a broad definition of what it means to be a woman, and it's one of the problems i have with feminism as I've experienced it - though i know that it's making room for more and more women these days, and that's why i identify as feminist myself, despite my criticisms.

I can also relate with your mom. I was also forced to get a course I didn't even dream to take(didn't interest me) just because I got full scholarship. I told myself I will just hang on for 5 years and then get a job and then study what I wanted. But fate has different course for me. I met my husband on my 3rd year, got married on my 4th year and migrated with my hubby a day after graduation. My hubby wanted me to pursue the course I wanted but I made my decision to help him in his business. That was 9 years ago. I am still working as admin.Sometimes, I think that maybe I should have gone to school right away to pursue my dream. But thinking back, I would have done the same again. When I met my husband, my dream changed. Now we are together at home and at work. And I'm happy how it turned out.

I'm sure Hani's devotion and love will also pay off and that she will be happy at the end.

first time to post here...Frankly speaking, the reason why I watch PK is because of KHJ (I do love KHJ's true personality when I saw him in WGM). I don't have high expectation about this drama and also of KHJ's acting; all I want is just to see him on screen and I'm just curious on how will he deliver in this drama and I was not impressed in KHJ's acting in BOF. I'm not also into love stories and cutie/fluffy dramas but what surprised me is that I'm enjoying this drama. It makes me reminisce my past love experience/escapades .(I'm 35 y/o btw and happily married)

My take on HN's dreams: If you are familiar with Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Stages of Dev't, HN and SJ are on intimacy vs isolation stage wherein at this stage we are more preoccupied on having the need to have someone to share everything in this world; someone to love and be with them for the rest of our lives. It is just normal for HN to have a dream like that because in the first place she still doesn't know what she wants to do when she goes to college. All that she knows is that she is happy if she is with SJ. Although I cringed on that scene, I understand her if she is thinking like that and I cannot judge her if she will do anything just to be with SJ because that makes her happy and contented. HN is not intellectual also as SJ and she doesn't know anything she excels in. All that she knows is that she is hardworking if she wants to do something and if it is anything related to SJ. I want to give her a chance and get to her senses that she needs to love herself first before loving SJ.

We may not admit it, but those of you somewhat experience to make or have a goal/dream that you interrelate with someone you love. This may be childish/childlike but there will come a point in our lives that we do something stupid like this.

Also, I admire HN's character of being brave and bold in showing her feelings. The usual human's tendency is making defense mechanisms to project a behavior different from what we truly feel so as not be humiliated. We usually guard our feelings and we take reasons first than our emotions. I'm more of a SJ character in person and I really admire people who show their feelings rather than keep it to themselves.

WOW! You know what I like the most from this simple linear low plot drama called Playful Kiss? The high quality DISCUSSION we got here! I love the pros and cons and I can't say that I agree or disagree. Both parties are just right to me. People have different values and we learn to appreciate that. So please, continue on the next episodes!

I think it's because I've read so many shoujo manga that I kinda understand where a story like Itazura na Kiss comes from and why it's so popular. I guess it's just a cultural-generational thing. Some can accept what Hani's doing, some can't. Me.. I think it's cool as long as it stays within the realm of fiction.

Anyway, to totally reject this kind of relationship is like saying.. only 1 type of relationship is acceptable.. if it's 'normal' ..that is. But what is normal? Normal to a couple may not be normal to another couple. For example.. and S&M-type couple (like what Hani and Seung Jo is, according to me) will never be satisfied if they're paired with others. No matter how much we think that they deserve better partners.. they'll still stay together. I think as long as the boy and the girl loves each other, everything will be okay in the end. As long as they don't hurt themselves or other people.

Regarding Hani following Seung Jo around.. I've read many manga about couples like that, and despite the protests and admonitions by the one being followed.. after sometime he usually will crave it, that kind of attention. I think Hani has never done anything without Seung Jo's unspoken consent.. and every time she wants to withdraw, he pulls her back in so she can continue to orbit him. E.V.E.R.Y.T.I.M.E.

It's frustrating.. esp the scene where she follows him to his dad's office to work there. But it's also a fascinating study. Seung Jo's a smart guy and if he had not wanted Hani to cling to him so much or that she should leave him alone, he would have said it clearly. That was what Hani's friend asked him to do in ep 11 (or was it 10?), but what did he do? He engineered that meeting with Hera and his tuition student. If you ask me who's to blame for this seesaw relationship, I'd definitely say it's Baek Seung Jo. And instead of being peeved about it, I think it's rather interesting.. :P

For me, the drama is about the "Growing Up of Baek Seung Jo", instead of Hani. He's the main focus of the story disguised as a secondary character. Which is probably why the story is told from Hani's perspective, instead of his.

*To be honest, her lack of oomph on that front kind of killed my love for her in this episode. I’m hoping that it’s part of her arc, and that she’ll be growing. *

Anyway.. thanks for the recap! I love reading your comments about this episode. Lemme answer your unwritten question.. in the anime, Kotoko's world pretty much still revolves around Naoki even after they have a child together.. but Naoki's world also revolves around his wife and child. And I think it's sweet.

Wow. The "Growing Up of Baek Seung Jo." You are SO right! He evolves A LOT over the course of the story, more so than she does, because she is in touch with her feelings and emotions from day one--including what she wants to do with her life. She's never been emotionally manipulated the way he has.

Excellent insight.

I got an immense amount of enjoyment out of reading all the comments on this thread. So many interesting AND well articulated opinions!

Just a thought: Has anyone seen the movie Say Anything? It was made in 1989, so around the same time this manga was written, and features a loveable guy following around/being in love with a "perfect" girl who also happens to not be in touch with her emotions. The guy, Lloyd, played by John Cusack (whom I love to an unhealthy degree) has no direction, and at the end of the movie when he is talking to Diane's father, he says, "What I really want to do with my life - what I want to do for a living - is I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at it." He goes with her to England, with no other plan than to live with her and support her. Throughout the film, people keep asking him what he's going to do, and he has no real answer, until he decides to follow Diane. Call it unhealthy, call it dependent, but that is STILL one of my favorite romantic movies. I bring it up because some people mentioned that they feel this situation would be different if it was a boy chasing a girl, and I even saw people saying they feel this story is unique to manga.

Lloyd Dobbler and Oh Ha Ni are not particularly good at anything except being amazingly kind, selfless, and brave human beings, and honestly... I think that's enough.

Its three in the morning here in DC, so pardon me if my thoughts seem a little disjointed. I would comment further, but real life beckons.

I ADORE Lloyd. And Diane really wasn't complete without him.

I have only seen PK, and none of the other adaptations. What is the difference between Kotoko and Ha Ni? I know ISWAK supposedly has a much more annoying protagonist, but the anime/manga is almost completely unknown to me.

Oh dear you asked for it. There are a slew of people that hate Kotoko for her single minded devotion to Naoki. I am not one of them. I love her for it. The differences between HaNi and Kotoko in my opinion are starting points. HaNi starts out at a much better place. She has skills and functions well within her group of peers. Being able to kick the soda from the machine and being able to draw well were unheard of sets of skills that Kotoko would never have been looked for to do. This was a child that could not walk a straight line without causing havoc. Next is her attitude. Ha Ni does have more pluck at the beginning, where Kotoko has to grow her backbone and learn to fight back in-spite of her love for him.

Also Noaki isn't mean until he starts to get jealous. All other scenes with him are cold, but that is because he truly is lacking emotion in all other interactions with everyone except Kotoko and his brother. Everything is logical and sanitized. That only changes as Kotoko works on him to become a human. Seung Jo is smiling and smirking and giggling. He actually has a weird passive/aggressive feel that has never existed before, at least not until after they were married.

Kotoko also is a character that has power over Naoki and uses it. At first unknowingly and then openly. That subject is barely touch on in this show. Since the larger influences of changing their natures has been removed, it simply isn't needed.

Ha Ni and Seung Jo are compatible and in my opinion they took two different characters and gave them someone else's plot to follow. Honestly I think that is why we have all this "controversy" now. Those that don't like Ha Ni's choices would have hated Kotoko from the beginning since that is what she is like and has always said from day one.

It's funny, I don't remember getting so annoyed at Lloyd. If anything, I remember him being adorable and moving. Hmmm... might I be gender biased? Could it be that I get kinda annoyed at Ha Ni because what she is doing lots of things that I try so hard NOT to do? Or that I think women should not be doing?

Having said that, I still find certain things Ha Ni does touching. Sounds like I've gotta watch Say Anything again this weekend! Thanks for bringing this up, interesting .....

wow!!!! This is just awesome. It's really fun reading different views and opinion for just a simple cute drama like Playful kiss.
As a modern, independent woman myself, I totally agree with GF about OHN not having a back bone & so dependent on the person she love & will probably love for the rest of her life. While reading others' opinion, I come to realize that life is not just how to be independent, have a career of your own. Of course, it feels good to have your own identity. I have a husband but we are living separately ( not because we are separated or divorce but because he works in another country & I work in another country). My point is I wanted to have my own life as a career woman, so I want to live independently away from my family, but seeing my life now living alone, it's not worth giving up what I realized is the most important thing in life is being with the person you love the most.

I honestly envy OHN's passion- simple-minded she can be but she's honest, bold and willing to give everything she has for the sake of her love ones. Her dream is not less valuable coz no matter what it is, it's a dream. Going to nursing school is a challenge as well, but she's willing to proceed with that challenge as long as she's with BSJ. HE is her inspiration, we do all have our inspiration, don't we?

I’m actually more of a SJ character in person and I really admire people who show their feelings rather than keep it to themselves.

Thank you GF & JB for recapping PK, though the drama is not probably your cup of tea, but you are willing to do it for us non-Korean fangirls! Thank you!

Thanks girlfriday...

I guess what really makes this drama interesting is the way that people view it may it be positive or negative...

Annnnnnnnnnd let the angst begin…
and by angst, I mean the real kind…

The one which breaks your heart and rips it into pieces before putting it in a grinder and then turning it into hamburger…

or in the case of succeeding episodes, Ha Ni’s…

Speaking of whom, anyone else here who thinks that she’d really make a great asset to the CIA?

*me raises hands*

Though Ha Ni might be slow in the uptake, i believe that she has some major experience that she can really highlight and showcase to get the job as proven by her character throughout these past 12 episodes…

Number 1: She’s good at recon work…

She might be as obvious as Hitlers moustache when somethings bugging her, but at least she’s not afraid to open her mouth and say something that gets her the details coming from people that she wants it from the most ..

(Although on second thought, chances are her line of questioning would also be so obvious that it would be to her opponents advantage… )

Number 2: Stalking is her expertise…

There’s no need for expensive GPS or high tech equipment for navigation, just put Seung Jo in the middle of a location where she’s supposed to trail her subject and for sure no matter if it’s almost next to impossible to even imagine that she can follow him there, Ha Ni would sniff him out and find him at all cost… at all time…

( I totally get it now… maybe Ji hoo sunbae lent her his emergency bell that worked for Geum Jandi now that he’s playing Seung Jo… )

And last but most important of all, she has such devout and blind loyalty to one man that she can endure ANYTHING and live her life entirely, all for the name of her love for Seung Jo…

(I suppose this will come in handy when she gets captured and they use a loved one just so she’d spill her deepest darkest secrets…

Terrorist: Who sent you here?

* holds Seung Jo hostage and threatens Ha Ni to spill while pointing at him with electric rods that shoot sparks*

Ha Ni: ANDWEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

*runs towards terrorist, grabs electric rods and electrocutes herself by the neck instead as Seung Jo looks on once again dumbfoundedly*

hmmm… thinking about it, i guess torture could also be out of the question because there’s no need for it since Ha Ni needs no prodding to let slip vital secrets out…

DARN IT! I guess i stand corrected and Ha Ni better not quit her day job right now…)

But seriously, though sometimes it gets pretty old and a little bit frustrating to see Seung Jo holding back when we all know now how he feels towards Ha Ni, I, for one appreciate the fact that that situation helps a lot in making those little moments that they share together more precious and spazz inducing…

Perhaps it is the fact that Seung Jo lets his guard down very, very rarely that’s why i get a deeper appreciation for the things he do when he just throws caution to the wind and lets himself go…As if a simple gesture from him or an unexpected smile can make all the pining and waiting that Ha Ni does and did for him justifiable and oh so worth it…

(That embarassed Yes that he gave out when the manager asked him if it was his girlfriend who made his lunchbox?

EPIC!

I swear i flailed around like a fish caught on a hook while being drawn out of water!)

I love the fact how Seung Jo cannot admit to his real feelings for Ha Ni and how Ha Ni seems to think that he really means that, and yet, looking at them, every second that they share together seem to scream of them already being in a PSEUDO kind of commitment…

The kind that don’t need words but just a tacit understanding about how they feel towards one another along with the silent acceptance of each others feelings…

I also get misty eyed over the thought that Seung Jo can only open up his deepest, darkest thoughts to Ha Ni and how Ha Ni encourages him and gives him comfort during times when he needs it the most…

I guess there lies the magic of this story…

About how when we love we may have nothing in common with the person that fate has destined for us and yet something just clicks together that in the process, we end up filling parts of ourselves that is lacking through the strengths of the other person…

As i watch Seung Jo struggle with his inner demons as he gets caught between his responsibility towards his family and his own dreams and ambitions, i seriously just want to hug him and draw him close to me…

(What? you’re on to me? That i would grab at straws just to get a reason to touch him?

Dang it! And i thought i was doing a very good job at hiding it!

Anyways, anyone else notice how Seung Jo unbuttoning the top button of his shirt seem to signify and symbolize how stifling it is to be working in an office environment for him and yet, i guess, Ha Ni’s tenacity is rubbing off on him because he’s trudging through it without complaints and making the most out of it… How much more PERFECT can he be?)

Now that the stakes are set higher and it seems like Ha Ni is in for serious competition in the person of Miss I- have- no-pants- so- i- would- always- wear- shorts, I am anticipating with great relish the angst that will come as this turns the odds against Ha Ni’s favor and the struggle that Seung Jo would face knowing that there’s a chance that he’d have to not only give up his dreams but even give up on her…

Right now, at this very moment, i am calling on ALL THE DRAMA GODs with all my might to give the PD strength and the scriptwriter inspiration, so that we can see the rain scene remade in all its Korean glory and i am keeping my fingers crossed that we get to see the “spilled Hot noodle” scene too because honestly, that’s the only time i finally understood how much Xiang Qin’s seemingly foolish love is not that foolish at all and how Zhi Shu’s pain over giving up on her is hurting him as much, if not more, than the way that Xiang Qin was hurting over the thought of giving up on him too…

Now that that’s over, excuse me as i revise my resume because i have to go and look for this gaming company where i would enslave myself for free just so i can work alongside a certain curly haired Hunky dory genius who rocks suits just as much as he does his casual wear and tennis outfits that i am practically mesmerized just watching him…

Awwww... that's too bad...

That scene was so subdued and quiet and yet that was the moment when i fully appreciated Xiang Qins feelings for Zhi Shu in its entirety...

It says a lot about her struggle to remove herself far away from his presence and to get over him and yet she just can't do it because that's how in love with him she is...

At that point, i realized, no matter how much i complain or whine or pout about the fact that she seems soooo into him to the point of making a fool out of herself, sometimes there are really moments in life when the heart really takes over and when it defies logic...

The tenderness with which Zhi Shu tended to her, broke my heart too and that's when i had a lightbulb moment that AHHH... this must be the reason why Xiang Qin really loves him...

That concern and worry that he has over her wellbeing that shines through in moments when she really needs it the most and i fully appreciated the complexity of Zhi Shu's character that what he lacks in terms of tact when speaking about his emotions, he makes up for in terms of his gestures...

Hi Leonardswench!!!Unlike you, I'm not on many forums/fora/boards, just a French board which is a bit similar to C19, except that there's a whole section for Asian dramas and so with some of my friends, we're great fans of them and often talk about them on this forum. I'm not very often on C19 either, although I'm still a great fan of RA and I even opened a topic in theTV and radio section on Asian dramas. So if you come back to C19 from time to time, you can check it out. Unfortunately there, very few people are interested in Asian dramas.
Some of my friends who are hooked to Asian dramas are also huge fans of British period dramas, so I think there's a link there! lol ^^

Marie, don't despair, let me get over there soon and maybe we can get another off-shoot going: you know that if they sampled just a bit of some of the great dramas, they'd be hooked.

As always, some just can't stand sub-titled movies or dramas, some don't get the humour and cultural differences, some are so locked in to their current obsession they won't give anything new a fair shot ... and then there's those of us who are constantly open, questing, willing to be sucked into another lead's hotness, another damsel's distress, another cultural take on love ....

I'll come and help share the K-love (and J-love, and T-love, et cetera!).

basically, for all korean dramas, they release on their official site before an episode is aired long video previews, teasers and they also release written previews (aka written summary) which is what she translated and which usually comes around first. Sometimes, it coincides with what is shown in the vid previews but often, it adds additional information.

Hye Ra's eyes and face doesn't look natural, she must have plastic surgery done which is very common in Korea. It's especially so in the scene SJ went to meet her at the arranged date, it's so obvious.

And I can't stand her especially in epi 13, in epi 14 she's gonna taste what's it like being Hani when she dated SJ. Crying huh? Serve her right!

Clearly now days we are missing some piece of the puzzle to love. Maybe if we all went full force on what we are passionate about life would be much happier, much more secure world, even if that passion is purely love.
Or maybe I am just delusional, I certainly have no idea what love is. I am a divorced 29 year old with 3 children and still trying to figure out what I want to be when i grow up.

Loving all the discussion. Thanks so much.

I know, right?
Life and love are not that simple.

We think we are logical thinkers until we get bit by the love bug. Then all goes beserk.

Did I actually change jobs as an adult to get closer to the guy I loved? Yep! Did it work out between us? Nope.

Do I regret it? Absolutely not. I did what I had to do to keep what felt like sanity at the time. I gave all I could.

I used to look down on people for doing what I did. Now I have more understanding.

Here is to you two!!!

I am 32 years old, just got a "dream" job that I've been working very very hard toward for the last ten years, and I woke up one morning feeling utterly lost.

But I am happy ^_^ Not because of the dream job, but because I can appreciate life and people around me more and more each day.

"Not because of the dream job, but because I can appreciate life and people around me more and more each day."

Exactly again! Brilliant people on this site.
I am appreciating so much more in life. Maybe because I reached a point where I am like WTF am I doing? Darn you Ha Ni and Seung Jo. I almost feel like I am some teen girl having a revelation and hopefully not to late in life!

I think in the world we are in now as previous posters have said we are all heading in one direction. What happened to the days of it being okay to go after something/someone you want the consequences be damned!

Congrats on your dream job!

"I did what I had to do to keep what felt like sanity at the time. I gave all I could."

Exactly! I think as I age I am definitely seeing the world different. If I only knew now what I knew then definitely crosses my mind quite a bit right now.

I bet Ha Ni would regret if she did not go after Seung Jo, and I think at least for me. I have to take a look at what you said.

Is my sanity at bay? Am I giving it all I can?

Things that make you go hmmmm.

heyyy waitaminute... but didn't hani get into parang uni first? and that was full well knowing that seungjo would probably be going to a much better one. it seems that robo-boy was the one doing some stalker action back there so that they would end up in the same place.

i have to agree that living your life in total orbit around one person is a pretty bad idea. i wouldn't ever want to be in that position. but i'm just saying that seungjo is pretty much equally wrapped up with hani, like she is with him. i mean he is pretty possessive, no? he just doesn't express... very much.

Good point!
It was after their talk about finding FUN in your life.

Actually it was way before that. Remember in ep 5 when Seung Jo fixed her computer that went wanko during her job application? He knew she was applying for Parang then. That is also the episode when he was being scouted by a Parang representative.

yeah she was great till the chicken hood episode. I loved her. They changed her into some thing moppy and wet after that.. may be only episode 11 and 12 :( I think after she went to college, its not just with BSJ, why does she agree to keep picking balls and cook instead of practice in the tennis club?!? they made her boring in college.

Whoa. For a moment there I wanted to scroll back up to check if this was the PK thread. For a cute drama there is some serious disscussion going on. I love it!

Hmm....I think I have to re watch the episode or something bt I got the impression that HN admits that there was a flaw to her dreams, because they were too BSJ dependent. Hmm... I must have gotten that wrong.

After watching epsidode 12 I thought, oh please let them change the storyline a bit. We can't really do anything about the main plot, it's the story written years and years ago.

But you know what I was thinking of?

HN's strength is making people happy, letting them see how life can be as beautiful as it should be. Maybe she can pursue a career along the lines of 'councilors' or 'support groups' for sick people. Something like helping families cope with sicknesses, etc. Don't hospitals have them? If there is anything that HN can do, it's to make people happy and feel good.

In that way, hani can still work for a hospital without endangering people... switching meds, etc. XD

Thanks GF for the recap. I know you and JB don't really like this drama. But thanks for recapping it.

am i strange for finding hani's goal strangely admirable? Haven't we all read stories about successful musicians, academics etc. who devoted their life to one goal at the cost of everything else?

i personally think it takes more guts to put all your eggs in one basket like hani has done than focussing on several things at once. Yes, it's not 'safe' and its not 'normal', people have several goals in their lives in order to feel happy and fulfilled, but we also need extraordinarily 'abnormal' people in society in order to push it forward e.g. set new heights. now im not saying hani's a pioneer, just that we shouldn't treat her as a normal person, but as a person we could have been if we chose to devote ourselves to one cause, be it science, love or whatever.....i lost myself there

basically im saying that haven't we all admired someone like einstein, miyazaki (love him, u probably dont know him) who gave so much, yet pitying them for neglecting some parts of their lives for it?

another interpretation is that hani is stupid. not in an insulting way but that she has limits. meaning she can't focus on too many things and can only concentrate on one and grab that goal with all she has, because its the way she is. sure we can rant and rave about feminism and abusive relationships, but thats because those are our values and beliefs and we can't expect all women to be tribly talented since if we all are so successful then there;s no improvement.

last suggestion (promise!) is that hani chose to love bj because she finds it worthy and meaningful. as an outsider we see it as strange and even unrelatable sometimes when she goes to the extreme, but bj is a compelling man to her, representing perhaps everything she doesn't have in life, dont people deal with people like this by either being their supporter for life or an eternal rival? since being a rival is out of her league and she's simply incapable of it (although if they went down that path it would make a great drama for different reasons) she simply chose the other option and we are following that choice she made

pure love DEFIES logic. it's incomprehensible. this episode definitely made an impact on my beliefs not as a woman, but as a person. I think I'll be a better person after finishing PK :)

GF thanks for the recap. long wait but worth it.

i can relate to hani's unrequited love to that of my life as a crazy mamafan of kim hyun joong. my life now includes stalking him for the past years since i discovered him in BOF/WGM.

to be honest, we may have done a "oh hani" stint in our lives. for starters, i know of friends taking up their university courses because their crush is there. or perhaps join the club or sports because he is there as well. but we grew out of it.

i think hani went to the extreme end due to the fact that their lives were smacked together in one plane. her world in under seung jo's wing so she just follows instinctively. not easy to grow out of it.

I watched Episode 13 already but the epic 'kissing in the rain' scene is not as romantic as I had expected it to be. KHJ did not show much expression when he was questioning JSM! A bit of a disappointment. Think they follow the manga too much cos in it the guy also was quite expression-less when he kissed the girl. BUT it was worth the wait cos it was FINALLY a real kiss!!! I look forward to the last 3 episodes where finally we can see them act like a couple!
