Kim Yoo-jung poised to break the space-time continuum
by girlfriday
Child actress Kim Yoo-jung (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child) has been cast in the MBC weekend drama Flames of Desire, not as one, but TWO characters. Really, Show? Are you that strapped for cash?
Will she be playing a shapeshifter? No. A body snatcher or face-copier? Nope. She’s just going to play the younger versions for both Seo Woo and Shin Eun-kyung‘s characters. Er, what now?
I know, I’m giving the show a hard time. But really…do they think we’re stupid? Because not only do we recognize kids who hop from drama to drama (most recently the kid from Cinderella’s Sister, I Am Legend, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal), but I think we’d KNOW if Kim, who’s very recognizable, appeared in the same drama as TWO different characters.
The only way I see this not jumping the shark is if there’s a story point, involving the characters’ doppelganger-hood. C’mon, Show. There’s a valid reason, right? RIGHT?
Sigh. I don’t know if that’s the case, and I wasn’t really planning on watching this makjang sucker, but I may have to now, just to see what possible reason they’d have, to get one girl to defy all logic of time and space. K-dramaland is truly testing my sanity with this one.
Flames of Desire stars Shin Eun-kyung, Seo Woo, Yoo Seung-ho, Lee Soon-jae, and Jo Min-ki, and premieres on MBC this Saturday.

i am actually very nervous to watch Flames of Desire..
because I might have this super inappropriate crush to Yoo Seung Ho that I have a feeling will turn into a major addiction because in the preview alone I am already hooked, line, and sinker with his expressive eyes as he stares at Seo Woo.
This is going to be a noona-killer..

Want to know what I think? I watched the 10 minute trailer.
Spoiler below (based on not understanding the dialogue, AT ALL - don't read if you don't want to be spoiled).
Still warning you about it, so don't grouse if you read on.
Last chance to stop, okay, here goes:
Shin Eun Kyung plays Seo Woo's birth mother - which is how darling Kim Yoo Jung can play both character's childhood selves, because the two ladies are mother-daughter.
And before we all start screaming INCEST.....I betcha money that SEK will be Yoo Seung Ho's STEP-mother.
Ergo, she'll marry the daddy, and her daughter will marry the son.
The reason I say this is because (1) we see SEK give birth and give up the baby, and (2) she meets up with JMK's character after they are in their 30s-40s.
The obvious signs point to her marrying JMK as his second wife.
OMG, family dinners are going to be SO awkward (but not as awkward as family dinners in Giant are going to be).

that's what I think too! Then again, if this is supposed to be some birth secret, then the show isn't hiding it very well.

yeah they kinda ruinned this part of the plot, they didn't? I mean something like this and they let it leak out.. unless they really don't have much cash and we are thinking too much! LOL

Birth secrets in most dramas are almost NEVER hidden from the viewer, that's not the hook.
The hook is that the viewers knows it right off the bat, but delights in watching the clueless folks in the drama beat around the bush until the truth comes trickling out.
I'm not surprised this was revealed in the the 10 minute trailer. Actually, it was even revealed in the 30 sec. trailer, as the screen shows SEK holding Seo Woo tightly in her embrace, and I was like what-tha-what, never seen a mother-in-law like her daughter-in-law that much before.
That should have been a huge flag that SEK and SW are not simply in-law relations.
K-dramas don't delight in keeping viewers in the dark, the viewers like to delight in knowing something the characters don't, and then yelling the truth at screen hoping the characters will someone magically receive that bit of exposition.

Yup. Hence the reason why I don't watch dramas like this. Too much yelling and waiting around for people to find out things that are obvious. I like narrative surprise, not yelling myself hoarse over bloodlines and the unholy crossings of them.

well I still think a little of suspence is good. At least they could hold it for 10 episodes.. then for the 40 episodes they can play around with their characters..

Good one. I think you got it right on the mark. I will watch this purely because of Yoo Seung Ho.. this is his first role that he isn't underage..
So in theory.. it is OK for me to spazz every time I watch him on this drama.

Oh! You were faster. I bet it will be like this.. they will show her as a kid, and then after a lot of time, they will show seo wee as a kid, and then the truth will be '' how can they be so alike when they were child??'' And OOOOhh because they are daughter and mother. LOL.
But still this kinda gave a huge spoiler.. whoever watch the preview of 10 minutes will know it...

they do this double-roling a lot in Chinese dramas though,,an actress would play a mother AND the daughter when she grows up :)

I wonder if this is going to be like Dear Heaven/Love in Heaven. You know, the whole "my mother in law is actually my birth mother" thing. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

the spoilers are all over in the interviews ,
spoilers
Yoo Seung Ho 's jaemin is the stepson of Shin Eun Kyung. so there is no incest issue.she is not second wife , actually the story is even more wicked between how she end up as the wife and not her elderest sister , she has great ambition to marry into the family . i think the real mother of jaemin is the first love of kim young min ( played by Jo Min Ki)

Actually no one in this drama is totally good person because even Jung Suk, the elder sister of Na Young (Shin Eun Kyung) who was stated in her profile as the most kind-hearted person in the drama, lied to her that her baby had died during child birth when she asked about the baby being alive or not.
And then JS was shown going somewhere to pick up baby "In Ki" (Yoo Jung) when NY is already making her way to the Kim family at the end of the 10 mins preview.

If this turns out to be a fail casting decision/lame plot line, I'll feel really bad for Kim since she'll be forever scarred with this mess on her resume. And I really like her too since she's such a talented little actress.

Won't this just confuse the viewers? Especially, if people DON'T know that she's SUPPOSE to be playing two different characters? But as a side note though, this young actress has been in literally every single drama out there. I wonder how she makes time for school and well.. child hood?

i think the context of time period will help and the other minor characters will help. if she's a kid in the late 80s then she's the daughter. if she's a kid in the 70s, then she's the mother. if the childhood roles are significant and if there are quite a few childhood scenes, i think it will be pretty challenging thing for a kid actor to play 2 roles in one drama! This is like the fourth drama this year for this little girl! I don't think adult actors even have that many dramas per year on their resumes. I guess it helps to play only the childhood roles for 3 out of the 4.

Kim Yoo Jung could pull off playing two different characters...even if they weren't mother and daughter. The girl is that talented. :D
Btw, where's the 10 min trailer?

Haha yea it was funny how I found the kid in Sungkyunkwan Scandal so darn cute, the read the I am Legend recaps and was like- hey thats No-ri! Wow 2 dramas at once? Then I read this and find out he acted in CS too. The people in charge of casting must really love this cute kid.
Ok out of point. But in this case, I guess there should be significance. I mean its a makjang drama after all right..

KYJ is a cute kid (tho not as cute as my nieces), but her exaggerated expressions/mannerisms in Dong Yi really bugged me (esp. since HHJ adopted them as the 'adult" DY) - but then again, maybe the blame should go to the PD.

She plays the two role because I think Seo Woo is the hidden daughter or SEK, Seo Woo might be married to her brother but I think fakecest couple is on !

Well, regardless of possibly sloppy casting and/or writing, I am very happy for Kim Yoo-jung. She deserves any and all work she's getting! She is awesome.

Screw the drama, this kid is cute. I can't wait to see her in something when she's older, because she may have been good in Gumiho: Tale of the Fox's Child, but that drama just killed it for me in the end. She needs more leading roles. X)

I was wondering that too when I looked at the information available. I thought they might just be wrong with the names but I guess she's really going to play two different characters. This show looks interesting and I'll be watching it for sure. Hope there's a reason behind why this happened.
