Dong Yi ends its eight-month run

MBC’s sageuk drama Dong Yi ended on Tuesday, October 12, wrapping up an eight-month-long run. For the first half (or two-thirds, more like), it reigned as the undisputed leader in the Monday-Tuesday ratings game, just barely missing the 30% mark at its height. However, in the past couple months its score (and estimation in viewers’ eyes) has dropped, and its last episode ended with a 24.3%.

It’s a good number, to be sure, and slightly higher than SBS’s Giant, which drew a 24.0% on that day. On the other hand, the drama did lose steam well before the end and collected mixed reviews. Furthermore, compared to the director’s prior works (Dae Jang Geum, Yi San), the numbers are a bit disappointing.

KBS’s youth sageuk Sungkyunkwan Scandal, meanwhile, has been quietly but steadily rising in the ratings, with Monday’s 13th episode recording a high of 12.8%. Alas, Tuesday’s numbers dropped it back down to 10.9%, perhaps as it had to compete with Dong Yi’s finale.

Despite the departure of one big player, I think we can expect the ratings numbers to stay in the same ballpark, with MBC’s Queen of Reversals beginning next week — and we know how the ajummas love Kim Nam-joo.

Every bug-eyed stare at the camera, one shot.

If it was a group of two or more bug-eyed people, you had a double shot.

If anyone was having a tantrum like a 2yr old cause they didn't get their way, you have beer or malt beverage.

Yes you were able to stand at the end of the episodes but barely.

Watching Dong Yi felt a bit like watching a daily drama. It was pleasant and charming to see the development of them as a romantic couple. But I'm glad I'm getting my Mon/Tuesday slot back.

Thank God. The story was good in the first half ,then it got draggy and boring. I continue to watch it to get to the ending although I regret starting on it. The acting is not good or rather lack of acting. In my humble opinion the ratings should have been reversed with SKKS.SKKS in the twenties ratings and Dongyi in the single digit. I do not want to watch HHJ dramas again until I can erase those same old expressions of hers.

Ditto. I gave up on Dongyi after too many, much-too-long shots of Dongyi looking baffled, consternated, dazed, or variations thereof. I often found myself wishing that Jang Huibin could off Dongyi, since Jang Huibin was a much more interesting character and much better fleshed out by the actress than Dongyi was by its actress. Anyway, Dongyi sealed it for me - never watching another sageuk by the same director since all of it felt so recycled.

Couldn't agree more. I put up watching this drama bcoz this is the only drama I watch together with my luvvvy. After watching more than 20+ episodes, I can even predict the timing of Dong Yi's favorite line " Chonaaaaaa".

Sorry, Dong Yi fans... but Dong Yi is one of the worst saguek dramas in my list.

yup, i watched the 60 episode run of this freakin show. i don't know why i bothered. maybe because i'm a sucker for sageuk especially this director's work. yup again, i watched dae jang geum and yi san....though i thoroughly enjoyed dae jang geum and loved ji jin hee and lee young ae there, yi san drove me to hell (how creepy lee seo jin looks though he sounded beautifully as a king)...maybe i just want to see dong yi and his son to ascend the throne, and see jang hee bin burned to flames...and also, my favorite reigns second to yi san is king sukjong because it was eventful...these three kings (sukjong, dong yi's son, and yi san) are always featured in sageuks (see: skks, painter of the wind, conspiracy in the court) yup, i love me some sageuk...

now onto the show, though they tried to be faithful as possible, some of the plots are really just dumbfounding...i almost had my hair pulled because of the roller coaster ride this show has put me in...they at times were fast, then they were super slow...

now to the directing, i always say that this director's "trademark" is his "calculated directing", everything is well placed, well-rehearsed, its like i'm watching a play, and that play was a mega hit (both in ratings and in quality) in dae jang geum, a little annoying in yi san, but plain bothersome in dong yi, it feels like i am watching the same show but only worse-r.

now onto the actors, the only one who is just left giving it her all is lee so yeon, playing the ambitious jang hee bin, maybe i watched just to watch her downfall (don't start with me on how they played it) which was beautifully acted by her, i almost want her to be queen again just because of the huge gap in acting talent between her and dong yi (han hyo joo)...now, hhj is an okay actress, i liked her a lot in shining inheritance but her limited skills was very much exposed here because of the different force an actress should portray in a sageuk, more especially a high ranking concubine...she is just blah, i feel like i'm watching a child playing dress up...now onto ji jin hee, i don't know what happened to him but he kinda overacted here though he was super adorable as a king...when it comes to emotional moments though, he managed to pull my heartstrings...then, bae soo bin, he was just utterly wasted...next time bsb pick a lead role in a beautiful project where you can show your talent and where you freakin get the girl..a big sigh to this now i ended one of my guilty pleasure...yup, i'm so guilty watching this show...

Yeah, but Lee So Yeon's known for playing crazy bitch villains (she's WAAAAYYYYY overdue for a loveable female heroine role.) And she played perhaps the ultimate one in Angel of Temptation.

I think one thing that hurt the show is that it didn't "centralize" Jang Hee Bin's authority early enough. Dong Yi mostly battles JHB's brother; and JHB's complicity was aligning herself with the Southern scholars. There was too much villain by committee.

I couldn't really hate her character for wanting to protect her son's rightful place. Her scene on her son's behalf was probably the best scene in the whole show.

well, i avoided her dramas because she has picked some horrible ones, and i'm glad that dong yi is a hit, so more attention is given to her now, then she can pick a lead role, much like bsb (well bsb has a hit with shining inheritance)

and don't start with me with jhb's brother...whenever his face is shown, i wanted to strangle him for being so awful (both in acting and in character)

I wish there were a "like" button in dramabeans. My sentiment is exactly the same. HHJ is the weakest link. Her lack of experience shines like a minted penny. My other complaint is that the King's role was written so poorly he seems worthless. It was all about his love for Dong Yi and nothing about rulling his country. Urgh! Wasted talent of a veteran actor!

I havent watched the last two episodes yet but I have to say that I loved it. Granted, it's my first real saeguk so i dont have anything to compare it to, but I quite enjoyed it. It did get draggy at times but i think it was because of the length. How many times could one frame the same person over and over?

I originally watched because of my major crush on Bae Soo Bin, and I do feel he was wasted here but no one could have played Chun Soo better than him. King Jin Hee was adorable around Dongyi and sexy when he was angry and played the role well.

One thing about Dong Yi is that alot of the struggles she faced about class, and finding love, about jealousy causing others to see you as an enemy, could carry over to today's world. We could all be more like her and Chun Soo.

I got bored around ep 5. I think HHJ has fallen into type-casting. She should take some villain role, b/c her acting is boring. From all dramas, she acts in I think she has the same personalities, same acting, same emotion, they all the same.

Really? I don't expect her to get anything fro Dong Yi, sure it was a raitings hit for MBC but I see Kim Nam Joo or Gong Hyo Jin taking the top awards. i'm also hoping for kim nam joo (hope queen of reversals is good) and gong hyo jin for the daesang...and they could give some to lee so yeon...yup, i became a fan of her because of this show...so i can't keep resenting this show solely because of her...

0

"sure it was a raitings hit for MBC but I see Kim Nam Joo or Gong Hyo Jin taking the top awards."

Kim Nam Joo will either get the Daesang or the Top Excellence (#2) award. It depends on whether QoR outperforms Dong Yi or not. It's almost guaranteed before the show actually airs. Gong Hyo Jin and Son Yeh Jin will get awards as well. Kim Ha Neul will get frozen out.

Interestingly enough, I think Lee Min Ho will get the Top Excellence award in the male category.

0

"…and they could give some to lee so yeon…"

Aww crap, forgot about her. I don't see Lee So Yeon finishing ahead of Han Hyo Joo. (Go Hyun Jung's Mishilian Victory is the exception that proves the rule.) BUT I think LSY wins the #3 award. Which means Go Hyo Jin and Son Yeh Jin combat for the last award.

0

oops forgot son ye jin, well i didn't watch personal taste, but i think both her and min ho would get an award despite the middling ratings...

go hyun jung's victory was a slap in the face for lee yo won, well, she prob knew it will happen, given how ghj practically smashed everyone in the acting department last year...

0

"but i think both her and min ho would get an award despite the middling ratings…"

The fact that Personal Taste was the ONLY hit show all year for MBC's Wed/Thursday slot will get SYJ an award. Pasta was MBC's #3 show, so Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Soo Gyun will get awards.

It'll be interesting whether Road No 1 gets ZILCHO. So Ji Sup may get one as a Hallyu doggie bone.

We also have Flames of Ambition. If the show creeps into the 15+ range (MBC w/end dramas rarely perform well), Yo Seung Ho may rack the #2 or #3 award.

0

That's true if QoR turns out to be a fail then no one stands between Han Hyo Joo and the Daesang becuase Dong Yi delivered the raitings so by default its her's and who else could they give it to? But still I say the Daesang will go either Kim Nam Joo or Han Hyo Joo.

For Top Excellence I see Kim Nam Joo, Gong Hyo Jin, Son Ye Jin and Han Hyo Joo but I say the last three duke it out. Lee So Yeon seems like she'll be a pretty good bet for Excellence and yeah I agree that Kim Ha Neul getting an award is unlikely but she'll get a nod.

"Interestingly enough, I think Lee Min Ho will get the Top Excellence award in the male category."

Hmm I hadn't considered this but this seems likely.

0

"But still I say the Daesang will go either Kim Nam Joo or Han Hyo Joo. "

In fact, I'll go so far to say that Kim Nam Joo WILL win the Daesang this year. She won the #2 award last year, and I think her strong fanbase will make the push for her to get the top award.

Queen of Reversals, with top star Jung Jung Ho, should hold Dong Yi's audience (Giant will pick up numbers, but it's already past Episode 40.) Athena doesn't arrive until QoR is about 75% through.

0

If Han Hyo-joo gets a Daesang for Dong Yi, I will eat my hat. And my shoes. And my computer. She'll get an award, but no way will it be Daesang.

(They even scheduled Queen of Reversals purposely late in the year to give Kim Nam-joo the optimal positioning for that. She'll get it, if anything, as consolation for not getting it last year.)

As for the men, I'd put Mr. Chep ahead of Lee Min-ho for a Top Excellence.

0

That's right I totally forgot Chep.

0

Hey Javabeans. HHJ seems to be the favoured child for some reason. LOL. You might end up eating your hat and shoes ,but please not your computer as we need you for your entertaining recaps.

0

I still think QoR has to do 20s in order for Nam Joo to take the Daesang. Hey, who knows . . . maybe Ji Jin Hee takes it all. Everybody now . . CHO - NUEEEEHHHHHH!!!

0

omaygad!!! totally forgot the adorable incompetent king jin hee...hahaha, def he'll win the top excellence award, then chep, then minho (if its possible) omaygad!!! i suddenly miss han hyo joo's "cho------na!!!!"

0

It would be SO awesome if all the featured Dong Yi clips at the MBC Award end with . . . CHO . . . NAAAAHHHH!!! I'll be blasted 30 minutes into the show.

Dong Yi's ratings were good, given that Giant took a chunk of the M/Tu audience.

I actually thought the show improved when Dong Yi returned from exile. For most of the show, it was a court intrigue story that found excuses to not be a court intrigue drama. Never seen a sageuk so willfully unwilling to tell its own story. But it got good with the corrupt Governor; his defeat was thoroughly satisfying.

Dong Yi doesn't explore the nagging dissonance of the principal love story: King Sukjong didn't do anything for Dong Yi (except the ending); yet, Dong Yi never resents him. We never get too deep beneath their pleasant surface.

I really liked the show kinda in the way I liked East of Eden. The latter's screaming "HYUNG!! DONG-HA!!" refrain evolved into Dong Yi's "cho *pause* na *sigh" motif.

about the dissonance, i'm okay with it, because let's face it, it was a sageuk where you have no choice but to me submissive and wait for the alms of attention he will give...i practically resigned myself to that idea in sageuks...and also to han hyo joo's credit, i loved her full of love "cho (wait for it) na!" but when i look at her face, i see little or none at all of that love...

It depends on how seriously they wanted to do the Dong Yi material. Dong Yi and Jang Hee Bin had been adapted before, and historically JHB was viewed as Mishil-style femme fatale. But the writers consciously wanted to make more JHB sympathetic this time around. Which is fine . . . IF they had wanted to more accurately depict Sukjong's efforts in balancing the power between the scholars in the royal court.

I'm fine with the writers consciously avoiding a lot of these details in order to tell a Cinderella love story. I think it mostly worked for me.

Dong Yi really won my heart over with her perseverance anc clever personality. The love story was sweet but not agressive and the politics did get boring, but like I said it picked up in the end. Overall it was a good show...not a great as Queen Seon Duk... but good "like a light meal in the middle of the day to satisfy your stomach, unlike over eating that leaves you feeling like a time bomb about to explode." I'd say it's the other way around.

The reason why Kpop is dominated by fabricated boy/girl bands is due to all the fangirls.

The reason why K-dramas have gotten so pop. in Japan is due to all the Japanese housewives.

Yes and no . . . I think allkpop and other outlets kind of distorts that perspective, because image-oriented K-pop is what gets marketed outside of the country. I think guys would rather listen to No Brain than Big Bang.

"I’d say it’s the other way around."

Beg to differ on that one too. Idol dramas have only been coming into vogue in Korea the past 2 years. If you look at the average age of Korean leads, they're usually older than the counterpart Taiwanese and Japanese. Guys like Kimura Takuya and Masahuru Fukuyama have elder statesmen status, even though their age is fairly normal for the KBS1 Sageuk and SBS Weekend Drama lineups.

The indie/rock scene in Japan is quite a bit bigger than that in Korea, due to the Kpop scene being dominated by a few major ent. companies.

The popularity of SK indie/rock bands like "Sugar Donut" is not reflected in the sales charts.

As for dramas, there have always been dramas w/ younger actors who aren't K-pop stars (i.e. - Moon Geun Young, or even YEH, after her Baby Vox years in "Goong").

While Kpop is now making inroads into Japan, it was "Winter Sonata" and like K-dramas which started the Hallyu wave in Japan (appealing mostly to housewives).

"As for dramas, there have always been dramas w/ younger actors who aren’t K-pop stars (i.e. – Moon Geun Young, or even YEH, after her Baby Vox years in “Goong”)."

Yeah, but that's the thing. When YEH did Goong, she was 21 years old. That's already a "prime" age for actress leads in Japan. Many are already leads in popular idol dramas before they graduate high school.

"While Kpop is now making inroads into Japan, it was “Winter Sonata” and like K-dramas which started the Hallyu wave in Japan (appealing mostly to housewives)."

Right, but that was due to the 35-60(!) demographic being largely frozen out by the J-dorama market, particularly during spring and summer. Oddly enough, until 2 years ago, main audience for DBSK and SS501 were still housewives and grandmoms.

"The indie/rock scene in Japan is quite a bit bigger than that in Korea, due to the Kpop scene being dominated by a few major ent. companies."

I agree with that. Japan is the #2 pop market in the world, and Japanese acts like Envy, Boredoms, and Guitar Wolf have crossed over into Western indie circles.

I'm not talking about the age of the actors, but their target/primary audience (i.e. - Goong - teen/pre-teen girls).

And I think you underestimate the variety and depth of TV shows in Japan.

Some of the most popular ones over the past decade have not been "teenie-bopper" shows - such as "Hero", "Jikou Keisatsu", "Dr. Koto 2006", "Karei naru Ichizoku", "Haken no Hinkaku", "Galileo", "Engine", "Densha Otoko", "Good Luck" etc.

For instance, there tend to be more crime/police dramas in Japan.

And let's not forget all the Taiga (historical) dramas on NHK.

0

"I’m not talking about the age of the actors, but their target/primary audience (i.e. – Goong – teen/pre-teen girls)."

The <20 female audience is the core demographic for J-dorama TV nowadays (though it's also given that the J-dorama watching audience no longer have a syncretic potential like K-drama viewing audience . . . the notion of a Japanese "national watch" event only exists with certain celebrity/royal marraiges.) Morning shows/asadoras (and maybe the 9pm hour on Fuji TV Mondays) are where the whole family gathers to watch stuff together.

"For instance, there tend to be more crime/police dramas in Japan."

Yeah, that's the core strength of J-dorama -- the emphasis on genre TV. Japan started transitioning out of trendy dramas around the early 90s and started to look at American dramas from the 80s. If you grew up watching stuff like St. Elsewhere, LA Law, Thirtysomething, you'll see heavy influence of these elements in golden-era J-doramas like Hero and Office Lady dramas like Hanken.

That said, OL dramas (and Haruka Ayase is settling nicely into that niche now) are actually targeted toward 20-something and early 30-something single women. In that regard, it matches American audiences. But that's really the only genre that I feel does that.

The really event-driven shows are usually aired in the Winter and Fall seasons, when the salarymen are less inclined to stay super late working. But that's vastly outnumbered by the endless manga adaptations and stuff again pitched to the kids.

"Taiga (historical) dramas on NHK."

Until Ryoma-den, they were getting SLAUGHTERED by the influx of idol actors. Tenchijn is easily the worst taiga I've ever seen, and I was frightened for the genre until the Galileo crew gave us Ryoma-Den, which is a return to form.

Dong Yi really got my goat on so many levels.

Han Hyo Joo - already ranted but would love to rant more. it's laughable how atrocious she was.

Ji Jin Hee - By the end of my patience with Dong Yi, it was his adorableness that kept me watching, although this Sukjong would have me believe that kings have nothing to do with ruling a country. JJH did a good job making a poorly fleshed out character endearing.

Jang Hui Bin - thumbs up. Often wished that the show was about her and her story.

Jang Hui Bin's bro - what was up with him???? When he first came on, I thought he would play a very knowing, chillingly evil, and - most of all - capable villain. Instead, he was utterly underutilized. Turned into a completely inept, fussy idiot by the middle of the show's run.

Queen Inhyeon - liked looking at her and wishing there was more of her story to tell as well. There ought to have been, given her historical significance.

Bae Soo Bin - His character here would have had me believe he couldn't act to save his life. So utterly overdone. Then, when I got fed up with Dong Yi, I started watching Jumong and WOOOOOAAAAH!! couldn't believe it was the same actor. Then, saw Painter of the Wind where he was delicious as Jungjong. Majorly underutilized.

Conclusion = the director sucks. Unlike other folks who loved Dae Jang Geum, I felt much the same toward Dae Jang Geum (as a character) and its actress as I did toward Dong YI and HHJ. But Dae Jang Geum was fresh, the theme of the royal kitchen and the history of Korean cuisine was just inspiring, and the overall execution was far better. I very much liked Yi San primarily because I found the King and the actor very compelling. And Yi San also made me think Han Ji Min could be more than a very pretty face. Dong Yi, unfortunately, has not done the same with HHJ for me.

Anyhoo, no more energy to be lost on Dong Yi.

"Bae Soo Bin – His character here would have had me believe he couldn’t act to save his life."

Felt Bae Soo Bin gave his worst performance I've ever seen him do. Easily. Not sure if this was what he had in mind.

"Queen Inhyeon – liked looking at her and wishing there was more of her story to tell as well."

Thought Park Ha Sun was actually the most consistent of the three actresses, even though Inhyeon was written to be a rag doll for Jang Hee Bin.

"Ji Jin Hee – By the end of my patience with Dong Yi, it was his adorableness that kept me watching"

What always strikes me about Ji Jin Hee is how rarely he gets to show off his comic and effervescent charm in trendy roles. More often than not, he's often playing stern, glowering man. Yet when he is in a sageuk, it's like he is free.

"Conclusion = the director sucks."

I still like the director (knows how to frame a medium shot, knows where to play up the emotions), but Dong Yi is almost a parody of his old-school style. Too long reaction shots for an audience apparently unable to read body language. Hammy "emotive" acting. Music that telegraphs every bad intention. Flashback of stuff that happened just 5 minutes before. All this was in Dang Jang Geum too, BUT the actors were cast to not wither under such signpost direction.

DY, despite its flaws, was pretty entertaining from about ep. 5 w/ the grown up DY (the eps. w/ the child DY were a bore, due to Kim Yoo-jung's overuse of certain facial expressions, which HHJ unfortunately picked up) w/ all the palace machinations and intrigue until about the time DY became the King's woman and was pretty much stuck inside the palace.

At this point, the palace intrigue became repetitive (after so many plots to kill DY, it becomes a tad tiresome) and increasingly unbelievable (Jang Hee bin going from an intelligent, calculating woman to an irrational, emotional wreck was a bit hard to believe).

Once, the storyline became repetitive, it became really hard to overlook all the bad acting (esp. the overacting).

Kim Yoo suk - as Jang Hee bin's brother was insufferable w/ his trademark evil villain sneer and laugh; the performance was like a bad charicature of the stereotypical evil villain.

Lee So yeon - as Jang Hee bin was OK at the start, but as her character became more unstable/irrational - she just became all "bug eyed" and/or talked really fast (to show how upset she was).

HHJ - at 1st her character was annoying b/c she kept using those same annoying facial expressions that Kim Yoo-jung used playing the young DY (I blame the PD for this), but then endless half head turns and all the other little things really started to annoy me (again, I blame the PD).

The actor who played the Left Minister/Head of the South Faction was horrendous - had about 3 facial expressions that he used again and again.

The South Faction noble family (father, wife and son) - I know they were supposed to be the "humor" in the show, but overacting, exaggerated expressions does not = funny (same goes for DY's musician friends).

But there were a few actors who stood out.

Ji Jin Hee - was really enjoyable as King Sukjong; he did a good job showing the King in a range of emotions - angry to sad, but the highlight was JJH showing the King's "boyish" side.

Park Ha sun - despite a limiting role as Queen Inhyeon, PHS did a really good job showing her character's emotions (as much as a Queen can show her emotions) thru slight changes in her facial expressions. PHS certainly played above her years (being only 22); I thought she was a bit older than that. She has a bright future ahead of her (certainly doesn't hurt that she's real easy on the eyes).

Jung Yoo mi - as Inspector Lady Jung Eum. In scenes w/ both DY and JE, I found myself drawn more to JYM than to HHJ (who I do like), despite JYM's rather more limited role.
JMY is pretty, but in an atypical way. She deserves to get more substantial roles in the future instead of being the 5th/6th most impt. female character.

All in all, DY, while having its enjoyable eps, had too many flaws at the end.

Most of the blame goes to the PD and the writers (who basically kept rehashing the same insidious plots against DY in the later eps) - esp. for all of those really annoying half-turn close-ups and the overuse of "Junah" and "Mamah" w/o characters saying anything else (if the writers just cut all the times the characters said Junah" and "Mamah" in half, they could have cut 2-3 eps.).

I think we can still get the whole story in EACH episode even if it runs for only 30 minutes because almost half of an episode was filled with unnecessary flashbacks, half turn close-ups and side characters stories/reactions which I think were obviously injected just to keep the episodes longer.

i loved this show at the beginning, and i was surprised by how addicted i got...but then it slowed for me and i stopped at around ep 48....it was to boring for me to complete....i wish they hadnt extended it

i love HHJ, but even i was shocked when she was given these awards for Dong yi..it definitely was not her best work, if anything, its a massive learning opportunity...and i hope to see her improvements in her next roles

the little that i watched of this show (whenever i was at home- my mom and her korean cable! lol) i was pleasantly surprised by han hyo joo's acting. i took a strong disliking to her from shining inheritance, but here she was surprisingly good. she seems to have a knack for the sageuk genre, and for playing these calm, poised characters (later on, when she became an official concubine or whatever to the king). still not a fan, but grudgingly acknowledge that she may not be all hype. lol

Yes, I am one of the crazies that watched Dong Yi from start to finish, 2 episodes a week.

I actually liked it in the beginning. And then it just started sucking. And sucking. And sucking.

This drama was filled with little things that annoyed me. Han Hyo-joo is an actress that I like, not based on acting skills, but her face seemed to always just....look the same despite the various emotions she needed to portray.

I just saw the last episode and my verdict? The ending was crap but it made me nostalgic. I did spend 8 months watching this, so I couldn't help but be a little...."sad."

Can someone please explain the ending? This is what I got out of it: Many years pass and Lee Sun-ho comes in to portray the adult version of......Geum, Dong-yi's son? What does that mean for the Crown Prince dude (Jang Hee-bin's son)? And did all the adults....DIE? How is it that there are no familiar faces other than Bae Soo-bin. -_-

From what I know of Korean history, the Crown Prince did ascend to the throne but died a few years later due to chronic bad health. It was also mentioned a few times in the drama, I believe - it was very important that Geum, or Yeoninggun, not be placed in the line of succession as it was very probable that the Crown Prince would die and leave him as king in short time.

(Sorry, clicked submit too soon.)

So yes, that is the older version of Dongyi's son ascending to the throne after his older brother's death. I guess by that time, everyone had passed on - the king obviously had to have died in order for his son to have become king (the Crown Prince was 33), and everyone probably just died of old age as well. Keep in mind that the average life expectancy can't have been as high as it is now. Maybe Bae Soobin's character just got lucky. As it was, Youngjo (Dongyi's son) was the longest-living king of the Chosun era at 83 years, and his mother was purportedly very healthy as well due to her background as a commoner - it must run in the family, yes?

Dong Yi died 2 years before Sukjong at age 49. Sukjong died at age 59. Queen Inwon who adopted Geum lived to be 70.
I believe Bae Soo Bin's character was not based on any historical figure but was created by the writers.

I love sageuks but I wasn't digging Dong Yi. I thought it was very fairytale-ish for a bloody era and they have some really good actors that they didnt make use of their talents like Bae Soo-bin and Jung Jin Young who was excellent as King Yuri in KOTW.
I also prefer Kim Young Hyun who wrote Queen Seon Deok,Dae Jang Geum, Ballad Of Suh Dong etc to the writers of Dong Yi and Yi San.

Anyways, I 'm glad it did well and some find it enjoyable. I'm looking forward to Onjo and Biryu next year. Sadly my pick for King Onjo (Kim Nam Gil) is currently serving in the military :(.

Then you should watch out for "A Tree With Deep Roots" next year. Writers are the same ones who wrote Ballad of Suh Dong. DOn't know yet who will be directing. Heard also that the male lead role is being offered to Jo Hyun Jae. If he accepts then he'll be reuniting with his Ballad of Suh Dong writers. I hope he accepts.

"A tree with deep roots" is based on a novel or actual historical events?.

@ Kiara

"A Tree With Deep Roots" is based on a novel by the same author of "Painter of the Wind" (not sure if I got the title right). "Painter" is the sageuk starring Park Shin-yang and Moon Geun-young; MGY won a Daesang for her role in this drama.

I really hope JO HYUN JAE accepts "A Tree With Deep Roots" rather than "Love Song".

I have to say that I loved Dong Yi. Probably not for the same reasons that most people either liked or disliked it. Mainly the reason I liked it was because in many respects it did not take itself too seriously. And given the fact that so many dramas get so dark and brooding I think that was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Something, I would imagine, is a welcome relief when you think about the state of the world economy, and the general levels of anxiety, depression and fearfulness.

If entertainment can be a release valve, serving as an escape, or even a catharsis of some sort for the viewer in such troubling times, then it is worth giving pause.

In a world were corruption, greed, and general pettiness has been sensationalized over and over again, something that may seem "poor" in acting and scope, appeals not so much as the standard fare of entertainment soap opera drama, but as an appropriate response to life as we know it.

When is the last time you have actually seem such goofiness in terms of a romance between a king and common woman? It did not have to go in that direction but it turned out to be charming.

The overall structure of the story was rather repetitious at times towards the end, but it was also, perhaps, more importantly an affirmation of some very benevolent values in a character like Dong Yi, who is able to be big hearted enough to give her worst enemies enough time and opportunity to reform.

Yes, there are a lot of flaws. Just the implausibility of many of the scenarios would make Dong Yi superhuman. After all, didn't she get thrown into the water? Wouldn't she be dead, even if her older brother jumped into the water?

And how many times did her older brother, Chun Soo come swooping in at the nick of time to save whomever? It's so ridiculous you have to laugh. But at the same time you want to believe it, because in times as desperate at today's you want to believe in the good guys. And you want to believe in an enduring justice where the good people will be rewarded for all of their hard efforts.

There are just so many reasons why we can point at Dong Yi and say, "plot hole big enough to drive a mac truck through, " but perhaps more profound emotional reasons why Dong Yi still is, perhaps, appropriate at this time in the world.

I enjoyed it.

I'm still watching the last episode, but I have to say it worked for me. Not because all parts were excellent, but because it was a "drama" for the times. And that, to me, is good enough.

Indeed. That's what kept me watching. The chemistry between JJH and HHJ was so pleasant and charming.

I think originally they had wanted to a pastiche of Dang Jang Geum and Damo. But they went away from that around Episode 30 or so.

Dong Yi lost me around episode 50.

It was becoming always the same story, always the bad queen trying to squeeze her eyes out of their orbit.

And I love Ji Jin Hee but his role is just so blah. This king hasn't been doing much since the beginning. It's almost the same phrases he has everytime. His subordinates come running in his office saying some big thing happened, he's say "really? what is it?" I'm so sad to him reduced to this. I hope to see him in a more interesting role next time.

Dong Yi has been a steady character, athough I did miss her younger times when she used to smile more.

The good queen (sorry, I don't know her name) has been a good surprise. She was lovely and fragile but her fierceness at the end was also well done.

I thought HHJ did a good job with Dongyi and I am a follower of all of PD lee dramas. He personally also praised HHJ for her role. There is always further room for improvement but she is fine with her acting. it is not easy to play a role from a teenager to a middle age adult.

Personally I enjoyed the last 2 episodes .thank you to all the cast members and production crews for a wonderful 8 months ride. :)

I actually liked the show despite the overutilised phrase of Cho-na and Mama and the scenes where they either look back or cut to flashbacks. I felt the fault was with the writers and the PD. Watched a few of his sagueks and realised that its pretty much the same old same old expressions.

Thus in this situation, I think its unfair to put the blame entirely on HHJ. She did the best she could with the materials provided, perhaps the only folly she made was to follow the PD's direction to a 101%. I think she did great.

And JJH and LSY was great in their roles too albeit they were also being subjected to the same old scripts of flashing back and the usual facial expression. Perhaps LSY captured us more with her villain role which was honestly not so 'single layered' like what they would want us to believe DY to be. Again, I blame the writers and PD.

There were so many areas which they could develop more on DY, KSJ, CCS, etc which instead was wasted on deviated stories of OHY and the likes of him. Felt this was a waste of time and they came across as irritating instead of entertaining. I mostly fast forwarded those parts. Afterall the story is based on DY. So give us more on her and little Geum, more on the crown prince would even be welcomed.

That said, I still think it was a good piece overall but thats my two cents worth!

If you liked SKKS or Joseon X-Files, you'll love Damo.
If you liked Joseon X-files, try out Jung Yak Yong (pretty good btw, it's hanbok Sherlock Holmes.)
If you like wuxia, try Chuno, Damo and Iljimae.
If you like Chuno, try The Great Ambition.
If you like female-driven vehicles, try Hwang Ji-ni.
If you like Mishil's eyebrow, try Merchant San Deok.
If you like Fushigi Yuugi, check out Legend of the Four Gods.
If you like ghost folk stories, try Hometown Legends.
If you like taiga, try Conspiracy of the Court and Return of Iljimae.
If you like naval battles, try Admiral Yi Soon Shin.
If you like medical dramas, try Jejoongwon.
But if you want to see the Best Sageuk Alive, ain't nuthin like 1000 Years of Love!!! ;)

FWIW, Jejoongwon is my favorite drama of 2010. Chuno never moved me, but there's this 3 episode stretch in Jejoongwon where I was balling my eyes out. And these were genuine tears of outrage at a society and time that would treat decent people in this way. And Park Kang Woo . . . sigh. I'm getting teary eyed thinking about it. There was such, such purity in his acting. Also the score itself is absolutely beautiful. There's this piece called "Purity" that has the effect that the MiSa refrain; everytime you hear it, your eyes start welling up.

I don't say this often about shows, but I REALLY, REALLY LOVED Jejoongwon. Not since Alone in Love.

I wouldn't recommend "Chuno" even tho I really like the 2 male leads.

There wasn't much to the story at all except for 1 long chase, interrupted from time to time.

Beautiful cinematography and costume work, tho.

Instead, I would recommend the Joo Jin mo vehicle, "Bichunmoo" over "Chuno."

"Bichunmoo" also had its flaws (the 1st 3rd setting up the love triangle was soooo, well predictable), but the latter 2/3rds was pretty decent w/ all the feuding/revenge quests by the 2 male leads (also had better battle scenes).

But as Korean war epics go, the best is still the film "Musa" ("The Warrior") w/ Joo Jin mo and Jung Woo sung.

I think Chuno's storyline is really a means to observe the class mechanics in something approaching "immersive history." Though, of course, that was done better in Conspiracy of the Court.

Though having said that, I actually think (good) taigas do a better job at this stuff due to the episodic format. It's easier to bring the audience's attention toward historic detail without the expectations of serial narrative

“Bichunmoo” also had its flaws (the 1st 3rd setting up the love triangle was soooo, well predictable),

Forgot about that one! It's a good fit for people looking for something similar to Taiwanese historical dramas, and Ja Myung Go is kind of in that vein as well.

@22GR777....your comment is so comforting...that is the reason why I'm drawn to this series. It is sageuk but it met us halfway.
I was trying to watch Yi San but he sounded too wimpy and lifeless for me (found out his sexual orientation when I dug up some history on him) and it got too angsty for me so I skipped some 45 episodes and was so depressed at the ending.

"Furthermore, compared to the director’s prior works (Dae Jang Geum, Yi San), the numbers are a bit disappointing."

Not surprising since Dong Yi is evidently just a retouched version of Yi San, which is in many ways similiar to Dae Jang Geum (though nowhere near as good). Surely people are going to get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

I only glanced at the first episode to verify that it is, indeed, stylistically and structurally identical to Yi San (not to mention the vast similarities between their premises), which made me lose interest. I probably wouldn't have ever finished Yi San either if it wasn't for Lee Ip-sae, who unfortunately wasn't in Dong yi (I must be the only fan she has).

I expect the PD's next drama to be more of the same, though his format can, with the right script and cast, work in spite of itself.

who is Lee Ip-sae in Yi San? Is she the villainous Queen? If that's who you are referring to then I am also a fan of her acting! She is the most scary sageuk villain I have ever seen, even better than GHJ's Mishil. Every time the Queen in Yi San appears onscreen I will have goosebumps and heart palpitations. She was that scary. I watched Yi san only once, 2 years ago, and yet I still remember the actress who played the Queen. She is that great an actress and she is that scary.

The rest of the cast were mediocre and forgettable.

Thank you for providing me with the name of that great actress. Wow, she was struggling with the script in Yi San and yet she managed to give a very convincing performance. What a great actress!

I will take her acting of the evil queen in Yi San over GHJ's acting in QSD. Kim's evil queen is very subtle, you sense the malignancy but you don't know when she will strike or when she will draw back. GHJ tend to overact - no subtlety at all. You know when she's being evil and when she will strike just with the movement of her eyes and eyebrows.

"The king looks too cheesy.Dong Yi does not show if she’s interested in him or not."

- I agree. JJH's Suk-jong is the silliest/cheesiest/lamest king ever. Imo, part of the reason Suk-jong came off silly/cheesy/lame is that JJH has no chemistry whatsoever with HHJ; and because JJH has no "kingly" aura. He was fine in his role in DJG as a soldier (?), a follower; but not in his role of king in DY, a leader. In short, JJH lacks the charisma of a king. Unlike, let's say, SOng Il-kook (in Jumong) or Jo Hyun Jae (in Seo Dong Yo), even dressed in shabby clothes they exude a "princely" or "kingly" aura. It has nothing to do with acting or good looks, but an intangible, inexplicable quality that is innate in Song Il-kook and Jo Hyun Jae, but not in Ji Jin Hee.

"Dong Yi looks like the participants of the Miss Universe Show always shouting for peace and giving all the dreams she can achieve more than peace."

- this comment is so funny but so true! World peace, hahaha!

"Han Hyo Joo unni, later takes a comedy or melo than sageuk, you suits everyday’s clothing esp, bohemian better.I’lll always be looking for you.Don’t be disappointed because of one reckless project. You’re a bright shining star."

- I'd like to see HHJ in a rom-com too. I think her real-life personality is more suited to rom-coms.

Beginning, ok. Middle, eh. Then...

Immensely touching. When Dong Yi lost her child, when the King made that emotional outburst to keep her to the palace and to overlook anything almost, etc.

I didn't like Dong Yi in the beginning but she became more beautiful as I watched the show. She and the whole cast became endearingly sweet and watching Dong Yi maturing into the different roles of her life: orphan servant, friend, lover, consort, mother, and philanthropist.

It was fun and I'm glad I tried to continue the series (though I must have skipped 10 episodes somewhere).

Some of the cast made me laugh my ass off. Ridiculous, (hehehe) and prob horribly casting but ultimately, adds to the appeal.

Beautiful settings and costumes. I want to live in that palace, damn.

i stopped watching around 40+ ep too, to be precise it was after gedwora died after they reunited with each other. i guess part of the suspense was about the sword fraternity. like whether dong yi would ever find the lady with the butterfly keychain, or what would happen after the emperor found out that she was the daughter of the sword fraternity's chief. afterwards when everything came to light it started to go downhill from there. it just got too long and draggy and ALMOST every scene after that is filmed with the consorts sitting in their bedrooms, or the emperor brooding over something. there's no more out-of-the-palace scenes anymore. i enjoyed watching those scenes actually, like the sulhee ones, or when dongyi was injured she was rescued by the merchant in uiju. somehow it wasn't gripping anymore, instead it became predictable. you can almost predict that every small little thing will escalate into something big and it did. as i struggled to watch ep 50 onwards, i just couldn't help but sigh or pause every 5 mins to surf the net or grab a drink. i totally stopped at ep 52 with no desire whatsoever to continue watching and i'm surprised consider that i really liked director lee byung hun's works.

i guess part of the reason was also because unlike in daejanggeum or heojoon, there's an objective like wanting to become a top doctor or top cook in the palace. whereas in dong yi there's just nothing much about her. which is also not surprising consider that much of the story about her are fictitious. in real history, nothing was recorded about her as she was a lowborn. and there wasn't even a lady investigation bureau at all.

oh yea and the king too, apparently is it only king sukjong or that all korean kings are kinda like...powerless as the dramas so often portray? i really wonder because it seems like unlike the kings in china where we would often associate them with ordering criminals to be beheaded or beaten/tortured, the korean kings are kinda useless, no? its like they give in to pressure of the ministers, they can't make up their minds, and they just don't seem to have in say in whatever decisions. i wonder if they're really like that or the the directors just wanna portray a good image of their kings in the dramas?

I love this Dong Yi show.... especially the romance between King Sukjong & Dong Yi but a bit disappointed with the end story... nothing much on King Sukjong & Dong Yi in their later lives together and how. only seen the last part on the 60th episode where Dong Yi stepped on the King's back for the 2nd time and ended with the son Guem with his uncle in the cementry, we don't know what happens after this till their respective death.... is a great show but could be fantastic if the shor prolongs a little say an epsiode on the old age between King Sukjong & Dong Yi.... I love both Dong Yi and Dae Jae Geum... I love Ji Jin Hee's acting... great actor ....

I appreciate Dong Yi. The story maybe hanging but the plot is good. It focuses on the importance of goodness.
